      Start off with plenty of space for him. Basking area and deep water area and then work your way up to decorating and stuff. Food pellets are okay, so if you gotta start with boring stuff that’s okay. Also UVB light or at least light they gives off heat, or a place that is warm AND DRY. Also, even if he ain’t as social as you would like, love him with all your heart :)
      Edit:mistyped UV, be sure it’s UVB

    I wish I knew how expensive they were to take care of. I’ve spent well over $600 for my turtle to make sure he’s happy and healthy. I recently broke his 40 gallon tank accidentally and in the process that flooded my room and fried all his equipment so I had to literally start all over again. I couldn’t find a cheap used tank so I had to buy a brand new one because I was keeping him in a 10 gallon for the time being and just felt bad about doing that even though it was temporary. Luckily, I was already thinking about updating everything to get the best of the best and he certainly is at his happiest and most active now. He does laps around his new tank, tries to eat the oxygen bubbles, plays with the feeder ball I got him, plays in the current I set up, and even got a little too happy he was showing his peepee everywhere. 🤦🏻‍♀️ He’s been such a trooper and adjusts to new environments pretty quickly which I’m so grateful for because than I don’t have to worry about him. He’s also VERY sweet and let’s me rub his head, neck, and give him boops in the water. He also has never even tempted to bite anyone. 🥰💖

    The 1st thing I learned is DO NOT feed your turtle in it's tank! I read they were messy but, didn't know how quickly it could destroy water quality. In 4 days my tank was a mess and my Ornate Diamondback terrapin got a bacterial infection in both eyes. Now on day five of putting Terramycin on each eye to get them cleared up.

    • @emmamadison8538

      My red ear will not eat out of her tank and she is so messy. I have to clean tank every 4 or 5 days it's a pain but hoping once she's older and won't need feed daily pellets it will be a little easier.

      I hope they get better!! Its honestly the first harshest lesson-- I made the mistake of adding outside pond water and let the pellets sit there because I thought they even added nutrients to the water😤 long story short I got hives cleaning out the dirty water and learned I don't want my turtle eating in their tank, so now they have a seperate feeding travel tank and they've even started eating better(brine shrimp works best for me, but they also have meal worms once in a blue, crickets are too tuff/big)

    I've had several turtles, some do love to cuddle. It depends on their individual temperament. Michelle my red eared slider growing up would sit on my lap and I would rub the back of her head. Occasionally she would open her mouth and pretty much talk. My college turtle Norma...man...SHE was like a little puppy at times. She would cuddle with me while I studied, played videogames, or watched TV. For hours on end we'd chill and she would fall asleep. Both of us would. No doubt Norma liked spending as much time with me as I did with her. So don't be discouraged! Turtles can be affectionate and cuddly. After all, they are very social creatures and do like chilling in contact with others. Just think how many cram together on logs and rocks.

    I have a rescue turtle. He was a prize at the boardwalk, and my cousins won him. One month after, we met him. He was fed once every 2 weeks, and he’s a slider. We took him home, and he is now healthy! He never grew to his full size, so I have a 4 1/2 inch, 6 year old, male red eared slider. He’s my only reptile so this is very helpful!

    How much they poop in the tank is right. I came across a raided nest of turtle eggs in the early summer. Well, I couldn’t leave the whole ones there exposed in the sun, so I covered the untouched ones, tossed the eaten crushed shells and took one whole one home. It hatched on Sept 1st. A tiny Eastern Painted, and I bought a friend for him in October. So I have two babies, they are so messy, but happy and healthy and growing. I am taking them to where the original nest was and releasing them in spring. 💕💕 They’re great eaters so far.

      Marie Maroney why would you release the one you bought

    • @mariemaroney7891
      @mariemaroney7891 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Water Bottle I’m only going to give him his freedom to be the turtle he was supposed to be, in the wild where he belongs because I love animals so much. I rescued the egg for the same reason. I believe it’s selfish to keep animals in a cage indefinitely for my entertainment. I wouldn’t want anyone doing that to me. But I don’t have any ill will towards those that do keep animals that should be in the wild. When I saw him for sale I bought him just to keep him through the winter. They will both be bigger this spring and have a better chance for survival. Don’t fear, I will make sure they can fend for themselves before I let them go. 🙏🏼

    Great video 👍 And great channel!😊
    Regarding the 1st thing mentioned at the 1:33 minute mark (“Turtles are definitely more look, don’t touch animals…”), I would say that the exception to this general rule would be that some tortoises and Box turtles - at least to some extent (there are many variables involved of course, including each species/sub species, how well they know you, etc.) - are more chillin’ with you and don’t mind being held or touched, etc., type of animals. (This is probably because they’re land based creatures as opposed to water based creatures.)
    Have you personally ever played with or interacted with tortoises or Box turtles? What was your experience if so? And what kind of specific species/sub species were the tortoises and/or Box turtles? In my limited experience, I’ve found that Red Foot tortoises and Eastern Box turtles are more “let’s chill out with humans” type of creatures.

    Number one thing. Look up where your local herp vet is. I live in Florida and the amount of people who own herps and reptiles down here is pretty high. Yet, there is only 1 er vet within an hour's drive from my home that treats exotic animals. Wanna know what the wait time is to see said vet? 8 hours. They are the single most rude vet practice I have ever encountered, and they will still probably misdiagnose your herp or reptile. Develop a good relationship woth your primary herp vet. Make sure you communicate with them about budget problems you may have, concerns with a treatment plan. Educate yourself and don't be afraid to ask questions and then answer them as well. Your vet is not inside your head, you may have given all of what you think is pertinent info and symptoms, but with a q and a session back and forth the vet might be able to finer tune your treatment plan.

    help!!!! got my daughter 3 baby turtles in chinatown! she just wanted 1 at first than i just didn't want to leave the other 2 on the street floor,felt bad! so 3 little turtles it is in a 40 gallon tank so they had enough space, i bought fake plants and a hollow rock thing that they would swim through when they were babies, as they grew one day i went to go feed them and one of them was not coming up to feed , i realized he drowned! he got struck in the fake rock thing, this was 5 years ago.the other 2 survived and i have to say one is soooooo huge compared to the other it's dominating my top of the tank basking area. At first they would pile on each other and bask, now the lil guy goes up when the big one is not up there. The little one is always tickling the big ones face so i don't think they hate each other , i just saw one of your videos and learned i should not have had 3 turtles in one tank.... ugh now i feel bad because i know i need a larger tank but i dont have the space for one but if i want the little guy to be able to bask and enjoy himself i need to get him his own tank... they are not aggressively killing each other, but theres definitely unfairness in the tank. do you think they will get sad after more then 6-8 years of being together?

      No you should separate them immediately as Turtles are very territorial and also, they don't miss each other so they do wonderful if they have the whole tank to themselves :)))))

    My red ear is absolutely an attention seeker. She is out walking and roaming around the house the majority of the time. She loves to follow you around the house and if you lay on the floor she will climb and sit on your back for as long as you let her. My baby is 5. I've always handled her since day one when she was the size of a coin, possible why she is very much a hands on pet. Believe it or not she actually loves having her neck and head rubbed.

    I generally let my red ears out of the tank during a sunny day, if I m home.When they had enough they simply chase me down somwhere in the flat. The male was quite interested in the outside world during winter, so I took precaution, slowly cooled him, and then showed him the snow. He never again wanted to go outside during winter.Heck, when my nephews came to a visit and started to play with him, he ran back to his pond. My female has a place under the bookshelf where she disappears sometimes for days.Never thought that turtles are such territorial.

    • @TheTurtleGirl
      @TheTurtleGirl  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      haha I'd be very careful with extreme temps...they're coldblooded, so snow probably isn't the best thing for them ;)

    • @gaborrajnai6213
      @gaborrajnai6213 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheTurtleGirl What I learned from them that if a red eared is really interested in something I'm better off to show them right away otherwise they will find a way to see it without any precaution. When I bought my robot vacuum cleaner next time I changed their water he was on top of it pushing the buttons. I could guess, because it was somewhat hotter than the room, but he was certainly interested. I always think that I just antropomorphise them to a point, but they have extreme tricks. When my female is angry at me because I put her out of the tank during feeding she goes behind the TV and switch it off. Somehow she learned that if she pushes the wire hard enough sometimes she can unplug it so she goes back and forth there. Fortunately the plug is above her, so she cant be shocked. My male when he is angry goes straight to the kitchen and starts to overturn empty PET bottles. It is spooky. And they are spoiled.

    Can you PLEASE help me? I have a baby RES turtle. For a little over a month now. In the beginning he wasn’t eating but with your advice to be patient, he started to. I have always given him 3 mealworms a day that are chopped up because he never ate pellets. Occasionally, I also feed him like 2 small crickets or one sun dried shrimp. Yesterday he started finally eating pellets. So I gave him one pellet and two mealworms. If this is problematic, can you please help me come up with a feeding schedule for him? I do not want to over feed him or cause any shell pyramiding. I want to have him for 20+ years so what should I feed him and how much of it should I feed him a day?

    Apparently 2 folks are up in their feelings after finding out they can't binge watch The Mandolorian with a terp or two...🤣🤣🤣
    But on a serious note; to anyone getting into any form of aquaculture..... you'll figure out real quick that it's way more than a hobby; it's a lifestyle. You are taking on the responsibility of ensuring the survival of a sentient lifeform. A betta in a bowl on your desk is not going to last you very long if you're not doing daily or every other day water changes. These aquatic creatures are trapped in a cage that we call an aquarium & if the proper care isn't taken, the results will surely be fatal. That's on top of the surprise issues like ammonia spikes, electrical failures & conflicts between tankmates. I've been researching since last winter before I even bought a tank & I'm starting off small time with a betta because I remember (2 decades ago) how much care is necessary for any aquatic life. My ultimate goal is to keep piranhas & turtles (not in the same tank) & this young lady has been a valuable resource of information & I'm still starting off small to get back into the swing of things. You want to test the waters & see if you got what it takes; get a cheap 10 gallon tank & throw some feeder fish into it. If you can get two or three to survive a month, you may just be on the right path. But don't waste hundreds on fancy tanks, stands, equipment, decorations & high priced livestock if you haven't got the slightest idea of what you've gotten yourself into. I'm not saying do a year of research before making a purchase like me, but at least find yourself two or three well reviewed & well rated resources to get a general understanding of what to expect before making a purchase of any kind to give both yourself & your livestock the best chance at success.
