Wow, I’ve had my turtle 7 years now and have NEVER heard of cleaning the filter in the water change tank water. I knew about not using soaps and stuff but never about the tap water itself. I’m going to start trying this. You never stop learning when it comes to pets. Thanks so much

I used to keep fish a very long time ago, and it was common advice/practice for fish. I'm just surprised this is recommended for turtles, and I've also had my turtle for like 2 years now and never really did this (I recently acquired a 100 gallon aurora canister filter which is working wonders for my 11 inch red ear slider)! But I will do as she says, sounds like she will be healthier anyhow.

@@MacCentrisSimpleSencilla I know this is from a year ago...but...do you still use the same canister filter/do you recommend that brand? I am on the hunt for a canister filter and I can only find any with reviews that say it stops working a few months to a few years later or says that they leak.

@@ninjapiratess I bought the Polar Aurora on March 2020, this is the one: "Polar Aurora Free Media 265GPH / 370GPH / 525GPH External Aquarium Filter with Builtin Pump Kit Canister" that thing is still going strong, ZERO LEAKS. I have a red-ear slider female turtle and she's huge, about 5 years old now. She's bigger than a football now.

@@MacCentrisSimpleSencilla Ha I thought I already replied to this, oops! I will definitely keep that model in mind whenever I have the money to move my turtle up to a 90 gal! Right now he's in a 55 gal and I just ordered an Aquaclear filter for a 60-110 gal which should be 100x better than the Zilla aquatic internal filter I've had for over a year. It works okay but it's very bulky and the suction cups no longer work so I've had to always keep it propped up with rocks. I'm looking forward to more media for filtration!

I have had my turtle for 14 years. Yes since I was 4. All we have ever done is just, taken everything out every month or two, and cleaned everything. And the filter. And let him walk around the house a few times a week for exercise. Never done much of this fancy stuff. But, everyone else I know who has owned this kind of turtle has never lived this long. So surely I’m doing something right.

Little tip for people who don't have the hand pump siphon, if you fill the tube with water from a tap 1st, when you put it in the tank and remove your thumb from the end of the pipe it will siphon without the need to suck the tube.

I got a little turtle for my daughter couple weeks ago. For now I’m cleaning it every week changing the water completely. I’m a bit paranoid since I learned that turtles might spread salmonella, and the main cause seems to be living in the same water with their waste.
I’ll be doing 30% changes weekly from now on.
Watching the video I see you don’t worry much about all this gross dirty water dripping all over the place like I do either 😀
Looks like I need to reduce my cleanliness expectations and stop worrying about it so much :)

My sister gave me her turtle a few months ago and I am still learning. Coming to TH-cam for a lot of advice! Thank you so much for posting. I look forward to your other videos. Do you not have to completely empty the tank? I still have a smaller tank that I need to upgrade but even it's smaller size I struggle trying to carry even without water lol. A pump works wonderfully - and at the beginning I did not have one. Recently I've had to change the water a few times (I think tomorrow when I plan on cleaning the tank it'll be the 3rd time in a month) the water keeps getting foamy and dark. I have big rocks for Cecil to get on and I'm starting to think it's those. Last time I changed the tank one rock was turning black. I saw that magnet thing you used to clean the tank at PetSmart today and now I see that it is an awesome thing that I need to get. Your turtle is so cute!

I don’t know if it’s been said, but you can start a siphon without a pump by filling the hose and bending the end to keep the water in. Then pull the hose down into the bucket (still bent) and release it to drain. That eliminates the need to suck the water through the siphon

Great video, question?? My grandkids found a baby red eared slider and I'm designated to keep it. I just purchased a 20 gal. tank with filter lights ect and placed him in it because he has been in a Tupperware bowl since they found him. My question is why does he have some fuzzy(hairy looking) stuff growing under the bottom of his shell, on legs ect? Do I need to clean him or is that natural? Thanks!

When I clean out my water how do I know which water to use? I fill up bottles of water with sink water and wait until I need to use it. What ph Cleveland should the water be?

After dechlorinating the water can you put the turtle in right away or should wait a few minutes or so? What about the biological turtle habitat cleaner? Should wait a few minutes after applying it? I love your videos, they are very informative.
