    An added bonus of using the tote as a baby bin is it doubles as a travel/emergency bin even if your (smaller) tortoise has grown. I keep this same exact bin on-hand and have had to use it a few times to evacuate Luka (Russian tortoise) during fires in our apartment complex.

      I created an evacuation kit when I learned about us humans needing one. I live up north in NJ so I have in it not just your basic staples but it's an insulated (sandwich) bag where I can put one of those hand warmers in. Doesn't get the environment too hot but warm enough so the poor baby or in my case a grown box turtle doesn't go down below 50 degrees. and yes, I have some hair raising stories of 12 days without power in Nov during hurricane Sandy, changing water bottles to every 6 hours to keep him warm!

    • @amandas5261

      Yup. We have one as a part of our evacuation plan for hurricanes for our Hermanns. Once had to make him wear a warm fuzzy sock because we thought we were going to be without power for a while. Luckily we weren’t.

    Awesome video, Chris! Your approach is so much better than the online forums that inject fear into new baby tortoise owners. My Eastern Hermann’s is now 5 years old. I live in one of the cooler parts of Canada where my tortoise has to spend most of the year indoors. I would love to see a video on your ideas and suggestions of the best way to keep a full grown tortoise, indoors. I had an enclosure custom made with expanded pvc that is about 6ft x 4ft. I’m always looking for new ideas and ways to improve my setup so would love to see your most recent thoughts on the matter.

      @ProdAsher-zy1vp 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm not sure what part of Canada you live in, but I live in Alberta, and it can too get really cold in the winter. My bedroom is the furthest room from our furnace and as a result can get really cold. For anyone that could potentially be of any help, I know the video made mention of not using lights 24/7, but without them, could these cold temperatures not be detrimental to the tortoise?

    • @dozersmom22
      @dozersmom22 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ProdAsher-zy1vp Tortoises need a day and night cycle and the temperature variation is part of that. They need a cool down at night. Most homes shouldn’t drop to a temp that would be dangerous cold for a tortoise. If supplemental heat is required at night, you should use a ceramic heat emitter (CHE) on a thermostat, but again, you want cooler temps at night. If your house gets very cold, you’d also want to consider a closed chamber so it’s easier to get the temps you need. My enclosure is open topped, but the walls are about 2 ft high. If the temps drop around -40 for consecutive days, I have to cover the enclosure to keep the temps just right. I’m in SK, btw. Nice to meet you!

    My husband & I love rain so we moved to Oregon. Our first year here, I sat outside at night to listen to the rain & smell the fresh loam odor. Suddenly I heard a lot of sucking noises all around me. It went on forever. There was a full moon that poked thru the clouds & I could see these giant earthworms squirming out of the soil. Apparently they live underground during the hot summer months but come up top to have a rain respite and to keep from drowning in our clay soil. There were thousands of fat worms just writhing everywhere. It's kinda creepy & kinda cool.

Plus, I've been researching the particular species I would like to have some day for months & still do not feel 100% comfortable. There's not much out there, unless I'm searching in the wrong places. I would like to see more about box turtles. (indoor & outdoor maintenance) Please & thank you! :) Oh & another thing that kind of fits along the lines of the sand 'issue'. I adopted a rescued axolotl, a fully aquatic salamander, which falls under the false premise of NO SAND. He's been on sand for approximately 2 years & I've never had an issue with impaction. I equate to food due to hand feeding & have never seen him trying to eat substrate.

      The lamp stand that Chris uses in this video for the heat lamp can also be used to hang the UV strip. When I had an enclosure about the size of the one in this video, I used 2 of those lamp stands and then bought small gauge chain link from the hardware store. If your fixture has hanging holes, could also pick up some small S hooks from the hardware store to assist with hanging it, using the chain link. Using the chain link, allowed me to get the height just right so the UV output was spot on, using the Solarmeter 6.5r.

I'm not really sure, because sice my baby Herman's had that unlimited access to hay, they gained weight a lot.

    Thank you so much for this video!! It’s been very informative and reassuring!
    My red footed tortoise is a native species where i live and we’re keeping her outdoors, which i think is simplifying a lot of things, though we’ve been having some serious draughts lately because of climate change so we need to pay some extra attention to hydration…
    I need to find a new cave for her though, because she’s gonna outgrow her current one very soon 😭
    Question: do you have any videos with tips on how to socialize your tortoises? I know not every tortoise will be an Otis (heh) but I also don’t want mine to feel lonely, i don’t know if that’s silly 🥲
    Oh, another question! We always worry, sometimes when there’s a really cold day/night, about whether we should bring the tortoise inside. It’s a native species, and i know the wild ones out there are dealing with that weather, but is it safer to keep her warmer on those extra cold days…? It’s not very frequent, we never get like a whole month of cold weather like that here, but we always worry when a cold day happens.

    This was so so helpful. Do you need to clean out poop from their container home? Or will it dissolve? How does maintenance work if you do keep them indoors. Also, i live in North Jersey and definitely want to try keep my baby turtle outside in the warmer months but We have a lot of foxes and coyotes, chipmunks etc, I would be too concerned it would get eaten or harmed, how would I prevent this? I dont think leaving the top open like you have it would work for us. Does the top need to have a solid cover or can a mesh be ok? And what weather would I then bring it inside? Like if it rains a lot or at what temperature in the winter?

    What about using a full spectrum UVB/UVA heat lamp on an automatic timer to turn on in the morning and off at night?

    How much holes are enough for ventilation but not too much for humidity to escape in closed chamber

    I fell in love with a tortoise at petsmart yesterday. I do feel like he’s unhealthy. I was sad.
    I named him (my mistake) and now I want to buy him.
    I think he’s a Mediterranean tortoise, specifically a Russian tortoise Hermann but I’m not sure. His shell looks unhealthy but maybe it’s his age. I don’t know the age either.
    I’d like to know where I can get a baby at, but I feel I should help “ziggy”.

    Will the poor air circulation in a box harm the tortoise?

    Hello! I just got my Herman’s tortoise hatchling almost 3 weeks ago, I originally had a mercury 3 in 1 bulb then discovered that it’s not the best so I watched your video and switched to a 75 watt basking bulb and a coiled UVB 10.0 bulb and I have a 18” x 36” reptile terrarium, which I’m going to switch over to a tub like you suggest. Can I use a regular house lightbulb to light up the rest of my tortoise enclosure?

    About how long will an enclosure like this be suitable for them? Around what size should an upgrade be done?

    Hey GST!
    Awesome video. In this type of set up is a humid hide box a necessary thing or would it lead to too much humidity?
