You didn't just play with Metallica for 15 years, you saved Metallica twice. You were the perfect guy to keep the band together and helped it reach it's peak. And with your decision to leave, you were the perfect catalyst for them to realize they needed to change things up, and as a result you brought life to them a second time. THANK YOU JASON!
No, they went downhill. They aren't the same anymore the new bass guitar player looks like he should be in a cartoon. It's a joke now. Lars sucks ass at drums too.
I can't believe that what made him leave was NOT all the abuse (both personal and musical) he went through in 15 years just for not being Cliff but the fact that he wasn't allowed to do what he wanted, as if he was a kid asking his dad permission to go to the park. Great player and even better man.
Yea I heard about how they treated him, I’ve been a Metallica fan since I was a kid and have had nothing but mad respect for their talent as musicians and for them as people, but this makes me very disappointed in them, especially James, the way he treated him after his devotion to the band for 15 years is not ok and I hope they feel bad about it, they should
Well actually it was the abuse... it was metal abuse and absolute neglect of Jason's passions and feelings about his profession, giving him ultimatums!! That's still considered abuse and it's a harder abuse than getting beer poured on you or getting your balls busted! What they did to him at the end was probably the worst abuse that he ever received from them!! The betrayal of a friendship and brotherhood is so much more of an abuse than the stupid petty nonsense.
@@sonicsolaceadriantsmith7118 I really don’t blame him for leaving, no one can stand to be treated That way and Not be treated as equal. I do think Metallica learned their lesson with that though and when they brought rob in, they wanted to give him more percentage of the pay and make him feel like they wanted him there. I really wish they did that did that with Jason, but they didn’t so.
I grew up with metallica during the Jason era so for me he wasn't a replacement, he wasn't the 4th guy, he was the bassist in Metallica. He was just as much Metallica as Kirk, Lars or James. I stand by it because he was a force live and contributed his fair share.
He is humble. He really is! I saw him jam with a local metal band in a small ten-table bar in the Philippines. The bass player ask Jason to curb his signature in his bass guitar using a small swissknife.. and he did! That was an awesome night I should say.
The Drunken Philosopher2 Really dude? I can’t think of more useless comment than the one I see here 🤦🏻♂️. You clearly never ..... oh fuck it. Get happy buddy!
Newsted is a class act, the abuse the band put him through is insane. He is fantastic live and has such a great energy when he plays. He saved metallica, and was my favorite bassist they had.
Cliff was admittedly the lifeblood of that band at first. But Jason did save the band in such a selfless, fanatic way. James is such a self indulgent POS.
Jason is clearly level-headed, which is what a lot of other musicians and artists are afraid of. When you have your head on your shoulders, it makes others feel inadequate.
I listened to the justice for all sound mixer tell the missing bass story recently and thought that same thing when he described Lars in that story (even more so when it turns out that Lars later on had a totally different recollection who was responsible for there being no bass...but drugs probably had lots to do with it.). People with inferiority complex are exactly as you explain. Throw in Jim Breuers knapsack story with Lars and you can see mixing in inferiority with being an asshole paradigm at work.
@@deadstar44 maybe it's a little bit too definitive to be honest (and I play bass for 25 years). Jason is a powerful on the point live bass player. Very different style compared to Trujillo, I agree. Trujillo can slap and do funk stuff, but it's not the purpose in Metallica.
I respect Jason for sticking to his guns , he got the chance of a lifetime, 15 years of loyal service , and to be told his side projects are not respected. Who could blame him for moving on. He’s happy and productive. Good for him.
If you plan to retain your employees, consider fluffing the pillows for when you can expect them to be tired. If instead you mock them for their hobbies, chances are they won't be back and fit for fight tomorrow. Probably crying while trying to enjoy their hobby.
Exactly. There are very few times in rock bands and it doesn’t matter what genre ideas whether it’s just hard rock or metal or Grange or whatever but when an original member passes away very few times does the replacement fit in so cleanly and really feel like they belong And off the top of my head I can only think of two times where it happened to where the person that was hired to replace that person fit in not that they replaced that member but they just fit in and made the part that road and that was when the original singer of AC/DC died and when Cliff Burton died. Jason wasn’t Cliff Burton but Jason found his own space and Metallica and made it his own without trying to be Cliff part 2. By the time I had become a Metallica fan Cliff had been gone for four or five years and I’ve always loved Jason and he has always been true to himself . I remember when they put out the Load album Jason was really the guy that was still out there representing for hard metal fans. I never understood those close minded ignorant people that says Jason sucks as a bass player or Jason was the reason the band went a different direction. What are they basing that off of? The guy was in the band for 15 years and he only got to put his input on three songs. So it’s not like you can point to a whole catalog of Metallica songs that Jason wrote because he wasn’t allowed to really do any writing in the band so I don’t know what they’re basing that off of. But I know for a fact when I would go see them live it’s not like at any point anyone could say “ wow Jason really blew that one” Jason was awesome live. It would’ve been really easy for him to just be OK with not letting his creative output be a part of his life musically and just stay in Metallica and just take the money but if you’re not being treated fairly and you have side projects where you’re getting your creativity out because you’re not getting your creativity out in Metallica , It’s like you said he stuck to his guns and I think that deserves a lot of respect because I’ll be honest as someone who was like Jason in the fact that Metallica is also my favorite band if something happened and I was a bass player and I got the opportunity to join Metallica a probably couldn’t have done what Jason did. I probably would’ve just shut up and stayed in the band. But honestly it sounds like today in 2022 that those guys have more respect for him today than they ever did because he stuck to his guns. There was a Metallica interview that came out about a year ago and it was so nice to hear James, Kirk, and Lars all talk very positively about Jason and the things he brought to the band and for all of them to admit that they kind of were in the wrong as far as that situation came with Jason. I’m not saying Jason is perfect because none of us are but I think in his situation with Metallica I think it’s more than fair to say that he was in the right there. I really wish things could’ve went down differently and those guys could’ve sat down and talked and figure everything out because I really miss him being in the band and that’s not meant as any disrespect towards Robert because if we can’t have Jason I’m glad Roberts there because he’s a phenomenal bass player but I miss Jason‘s personality in the band.
@@airman20012001 He have joined in on some shows since his departure from the band, I think. He played with them after being put in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, for obvious reasons.
For those that don’t already know, and don’t feel like watching the whole video, Jason decided to leave when James gave a veiled threat to replace him if he continued his sideband.
@@tomzadvydas1758 But to be fair, if you are already in Metallica, the biggest band on the planet, should you even be thinking about a side project??? That's like being married to a super model and banging the maid at the Super 8.
@@Dan.50 Almost every band becomes unsatisfying to some members after a while because they can only ever do one type of thing. I was in a popular Irish rock band in my area for 10 years and it was great.. but man I was tired of only doing genre music after a while. I would have killed just to play in a regular cover band playing regular rock songs for a while. It is very common for members of big bands to have side projects to help them keep their creative energy going.
Jason saved the band from falling apart after Cliff’s death. If they wouldn’t have found him, they wouldn’t have been where they are now. Metallica owes Jason huge apology and a big thank you for saving them when they were at their worst. I was lucky i saw him live with Metallica in 93 and 97. Metallica’s glow left with Jason.
They picked him from a bunch of guys. There were no shortage of people showing up then. It could have been anybody. And Metallica's songwriting is good enough, they didn't need saving. They were going to go regardless of who was playing bass. Jason was way more killer in Flotsam.
@@AndrewGrey22 i'll agree they coulda had so many options especially as big as they were at the time and just happened to choose him but can we not understate Jason's skill and addition to their sound and especially how differently things could've went with someone else? Jason is a very humble, very well rounded, and especially talented guy and deserves more praise than just being the 2nd bassist of Metallica, they were at their commercial peak when he joined them and even more so for the next few years and it could've been a bit different with some other bass player... yes the songwriting is still there, of course, hell James has always been a great songwriter, but i hate to see anyone simply right Jason off as just a fill-in or some bassist who happened to be in Metallica... he always brought energy, fun, and great musicianship, and a great personality to all and more than deserves his respect
@MIND I don't necessarily disagree, but it can't be dismissed that Jason already was in / had a band . Not everyone can work with that dynamic;they're not simply studio musicians. Also I don't think he handled "his place" pretty damn well ,neither being a complete doormat OR too stubborn and cocky. There's a recipe with groups , I believe , and it takes more than just playing the tracks right technically .
So here's the thing. In my opinion. Which means nothing. Jason was mistreated. Those guys did treat him like crap. He has a right to be angry. But he played the bass with a pick! What self respecting bass player uses a pick? But I digress. Those guys did him wrong, and they're going to have to live with that. I'm sure they'll be crying in their hundred dollar bills. But seriously....it's cruel. Karma is real....
@MIND You don't really know how a band works, don't you? 3 riffs on CDs don't mean just 3 riffs written. Jason was the main songwriter in Flotsam and Jetsam and wrote more stuff for Metallica and besides the band, but it's a matter of decision on what goes on an album and what not. Stuff like IR8/Sexoturica riffs could have been made Metallica riffs just as well, for example (would've made St. Anger a lot more enjoyable). But Hetfield was too much of an ashole and a control freak. Even so, Jason's 3 riffs gave the songs enough identity to realize there was untapped potential to include him more in the songwriting. At least on 72 Seasons, they fixed this approach with Rob, but too late and with the wrong bassist (Rob is not a good songwriter, despite having credits on more songs than Cliff on MOP). Also, if your criteria of a band member is just how many riffs writes, then really, go out, meet people and create a band. See that Lars is simply credited because of copyright laws and he owns the band (basic drum beats count as songwriting, but bass lines, don't?) and see that chemistry is extremely important. Jason was the grounded guy, the lightning rod for the band's demons, and the glue that held the band together, when James was drunk AF, Lars was high AF, and Kirk never had enough personality to counter those two's excesses. And live, it gave the fandom the edge the band lacked most of the '90s, so he bridged the old fans with the newer ones with his stage personna, which is no small feat for such a huge band.
James in his younger days always coveted the band. It was all he had and wanted everyone else to feel the same. No need to do anything else in his eyes at the time. Forget that. James thinks differently now with age but younger he wanted nothing but focus on Metallica. Can not say I can blame James in his youth. He just wanted his band to be the greatest and to focus on nothing but it. There are a few Metallica songs where he references how he use to be.
@@JB54379 ...Hetfield wasn't 18 anymore by the time this drama panned out, aside from that, his focus became more on alcohol than on the band at that period
@@Nightdare Hetfield has always coveted everything important to him. Metallica 1st priority was his thing for a long long time. It's part of his addictive nature and why he still has issues today. "Dirty Window" on St. Anger was about his addictive manner.
I was lucky to know Jason growing up. He was friends with my brother so I got to hang out listening to music at his parents house and cruising around with him and my brother. Jason was always as cool as he is in this interview. I am 5yrs younger than my bro and him but he never treated me like a kid. I had to grow up fast so I could hang out. If I was acting like a 11-12 yr old all the time I would have been left at home. LOL One day I was in gym class and the doors on the gym at our high school had long narrow windows and I looked over and some dude with GIANT 80's hair was looking through the window and I said to one of my friends "that looks like Jason Newsted" and my friend said "No.... can't be". Our gym teacher came over and told me that Jason wanted to talk to me. Jason was in town and he was looking for my brother. I told him how to find him. Jason knew I was still in high school and he could find me there.
Man thats awesome! How mind blowing was it to hear that your brothers friend from your average ole town, just got into Metallica? Thinking like man this average guy i used to hang around with, just became a world famous rockstar? Did you ever get your brother to see if jason would introduce yall to metallica? 😂
Jason is clearly a very empathetic and intelligent soul, he describes his time with Metallica from start to end with a great deal of maturity. Even when wronged he empathises and sees the wider picture. At the end of the day Jason knew his worth and felt he had to leave that situation. Maximum respect for all he helped the band achieve and for his decision to walk away.
And now Metallica is singing with Miley Cyprus. Which is like singing with Madonna in the 80's! Definitely Jason did the right thing at the right time by leaving!
Amen. Seeing Metallica live in the 90’s was like watching a monster destroy a city and Jason was a big part of it. His energy from the time the show started until it ended and I loved his backing vocals, they added to already great songs.
sucks that he got stabbed in the back over some spare time hobby bullshit. the lack of fucks given by corporate doesnt surprise me in the least. they arent Metallica fans just nerdy businessmen.
@@Billy_Darley ....They didn't really stab him in the back. They just had some terms that Jason couldn't live with. It's their band. They can run it how they want. You would do the same if you were them.
I wouldn't run it like that either. Btw, I think inviting someone to 'your' band is like engaging in a relationship. You don't own anything, you respect and you share, otherwise, if you can't do that, stay alone...
With much respect to Cliff and him being a god on Bass, and what Rob is doing now, I grew up with Jason in Metallica and he will always be part of the band when I think of them.
@@itman7132 You need to see them play live. Yeah he's different from Jason, but he is an absolute beast on that bass. He's as close to Cliff as you are gonna get.

Man, Jason's story about when he decided to leave the band is heartbreaking. How crushing that must have been for James to betray him like that, after everything they had been through. So wrong, man.
I don't know I kind of disagree, you can't be in 1 band and have your foot half way out the door. Anytime he would have focused on being musically creative for another band is time he isn't working on Metallicas music
@@Ryan-eu3kp Many bands have members doing side projects. Most notably would probably be Chris Cornell, Corey Taylor, Layne Staley and so on and so forth. Doing a side project let them show another side of them that didn’t fit into their other band’s sound. Jason should have been treated better and allowed musical freedom.
To all of you giving this interviewer a hard time, I've done interview spots with everyone from Alex Lifeson to Eddie Van Halen and loads of others. I gotta tell you right here and now, this is one of the BEST interviewers on the planet. Reason being, he had Newsted soooooooo comfortable talking with him that it's because of the comfort he felt that he told this guy the real story behind why he left Metallica. Just think about that. Jason Newsted had NEVER talked about this publicly with anyone before this. That is HUGE!!!!! If Beez, Scuzz or whatever the interviewer's name ever sees this comment, hats off to you sir. That was an AMAZING job you did there. Well done!!!!! Cheers from Tokyo 🤘
It was a shit interview. He talks over him and was annoying. Jason is a natural and was happy to share his story. You’re giving the interviewer way too much credit
Ive never interviewed anyone but i know getting the interviewee comfortable, able to trust you like a fan not a sensationalist is number one. Regardless how the guy comes off, Jason gave him the grapes.
That’s why Jason is my favorite Metallica bassist. That, and he’s the only one I saw live. His honesty and passion, gave Metallica an integrity at the time that they didn’t have it. Then James went sober, and the rest is history. Long live the greatest metal band.
Music is not a sport, or a competition between bands or players. I like old Metallica, and used to play the first three albums daily. I saw Jason live with Flotsam and Jetsam and Metallica here on the east coast. He is a great bassist and he has great stage awareness and charisma. After the original "Garage Day`s $5.98 re-visited" I stopped listening to them. My personal feelings, that`s all. Their are a couple thrash metal bands I find better than Metallica, again just my own feelings.
Alex Fontainne I was a big fan of Trujillo even before Metallica, since Suicidal Tendencies. I guess they each have different rolls in the band according to the time. Jason was what the band needed after Cliff and Robert is what this “new version” of Metallica needs now.
Alex Fontainne You know what’s interesting? Every band has a masterpiece, Megadeth has Rust in Peace, Anthrax has Among the Living but Metallica has practically any album except Load and Reload. Those are good but not masterpieces, at least for me.
Jason’s maturity and surviving life in Metallica is impressive for sure. I’m more impressed that he beat a pain killer addiction, cemeteries are littered with rock Gods who couldn’t beat opiate addiction. Loved his stuff on the Black album like Misery and God That Failed.
I loved Jason in my favorite band. That dude was solid. His backing vocals were hardcore. I saw them back in the mid 90s after James hurt his back and Jason did all the LEAD vocals. That was epic.
A dream come true for any median. But constraint of artistic latitudes is less than ideal for the individual and limits potencial expertise and craftsmanship for your groups core. Every member is an artist and if a member finds successful endever, the members can feel unsupportive but respect and knowing the odds, support is the gift you get the chance to give that which only you as someone of the closest personal relatipnship, true brotherhood, are lucky enough to give. Not a drrip of bad blood should ever be left. Only respect and love and grace. I understand Het but can't see why he didn't step up when they chopped down legends with ease but letting something in-house festeter a fear is sad but true.
Dare I say it was a stable childhood that gave this guy the wits to deal with things that others struggled with. I struggled throughout much of my life in a very similar way for the very same reason. Newsted has always struck me as a very honest, reliable dude. Cheers to his parents for giving him a solid foundation to build on.
I always loved Jason's bass playing and especially his energy. He comes across here as a genuine and humble guy who stuck to his principles and vision. He was definitely worthy of his place in Metallica.
This man is one of the main reasons why I picked up the bass. Truly a force to be reckoned with in the music industry and a stage performance and presence that was in your face wether you like or not. Irreplaceable🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Wow is that where the classic metal ballads went, never thought of that, but the songs have never had the long classic instrumental metal structure since he left. Metallica used to always have the slow intro that just continued to build untill you got to the power riffs.
@@airman20012001 I have been listening to Metallica ever since about 1984 when Kill ‘Em All ( I was 13 then , I’m 52 now and I’ve been playing guitar for 37 years ) was a brand new album , the classical influences in the Metallica sound are not from Jason and were for the most part all from Cliff Burton the Master of Puppets album and anything before that with classical leanings is mostly because of Cliff. Cliff was a metal head but also the most technically learned person in Metallica at that time ( but Kirk was in Exodus before Metallica and a student of Joe Satriani’s for some time) Cliff was the one who made the other guys understand that Classical music is some of the most intricate and deep as well as creatively powerful music ever created , and also that it can be ethereal and heavy as hell at other times. I am Not dumping on Jason in any single way ! Quite the opposite! I have way too much respect for him to ever say anything even remotely nasty ! He was the best choice they could have ever made after Cliffs passing. I have nothing but huge respect for Cliff and Jason both as well as Robert Trujillo ( ex - Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves for those who don’t know where he came from) . I was already a massive fan of Jason Newstead in about 1988- 90 from the Flotsam and Jetsam days ! ( Doomsday for the Deceiver etc. 🤟🏻😎🤟🏻🎸🤯 ) He sounded killer in that and if I’m not mistaken that was His band ! Many newer fans from the black album era don’t really seem to know that … Jason Newsted was already an awesome bass player long before he was in Metallica! Rob in his own way is just as important as Jason was at that time … Rob was somehow ( during and after St. Anger) able to make the guys see why they had originally loved being in Metallica in the first place ! He also through his genuine good guy personality and especially his sense of humour 😄was able to show them how to be happy again with what they are doing as well as serious and yet vulnerable all at the same time! At the time of St Anger they were all stressed out and had forgotten how to enjoy being in the biggest metal band of all time! Rob made them get back to the old roots music wise and somehow show them the path back to the top in a healthy way starting with the Death Magnetic album it was a return to form for the most part. The Black album made them the biggest metal act on the planet 🌎 but for me the best album is by far Master of Puppets and before that , but the last 3 albums are definitely getting back in line with the original sound that they do better than anyone ! It’s already pretty much perfect ! No need to change it all that much , of course you can play other stuff and experiment a bit but don’t alter the main formula ( anyone Remember “New Coke “ ? Yeah exactly… it tasted too much like Pepsi and died a quick death in about 2 months , with all the “Classic” fans in a uproar ! 😄) with music this can be as much or even more important! Lots of people I know stopped listening at the Black album! ( even though they were selling tons of albums many of the metal head fans who actually made them famous look at this as “the Bob Rock / too much Bonjovi top 40 Style influenced era. No offence to Bob he’s a good dude but just messed with the “original flavour“ too much for my liking !) and many of these old school fans have just started getting back into them with Rick Ruben producing again roughly about the Death Magnetic album ! Many of the original fans hated the Bob Rock influence. I myself didn’t mind so much but will admit I mostly felt the same even though there was lots of great stuff on the black album it was too “commercial“ feeling for me , just a bit too far from the Master of Puppets type sound , which to me is by far their best sound ever. I will say the last 3 albums including 72 seasons are back to a heavier sound for the most part and I am liking that a lot more than the Black era. Just my 2 cents , as on old school thrash metal head anyone else is allowed and more than welcome to think whatever they want… also … I do see Metallica and Megadeth as equals ( each one of them never had to restart everything over at ground zero like Dave did! I have massive respect for him for that alone on top of everything else he has done) and I truly love both bands !
I love every member of Metallica past and present, as musicians. As people, Lars is mad as a hatter. James is equally as difficult. Kirk is like, "oh man not this again" Jason is the most articulate and sensible out of all of them. It comes as no surprise he left if he had to deal with those personalities day in day out. When you're the adult and you're stuck with grown up kids it gonna be exhausting.
So you love bullies as in James and Lars, I know people who been backstage with Metallica, where James abused Jason, putting him in chokeholds and stuff. Kirk was just passive, he wanted nothing to do with the abuse.
One of the best interviews I have ever seen ! Great questions that made Jason feel comfortable enough to open up & tell all like never before. Such a humble, honest dude & a comparison between Cliff & Jason should never be done as they are both amazing players with different styles \"/
To me Metallica's energy left with Jason. Absolute pro, he never lost his balance - always rational, humble, very outspoken dude. I love what he says about 'worms inside people'. Again, very, very intelligent, rational, down-to-earth person. Love him a lot and wish I could see Metallica with him live, Black Album tour. GOD.
You know I really feel sorry for Jason every interview he's in they have to talk about his departure of metallica. Everyone that follows metallica knows why. He's a good bloody dude and a great bass player
True, but to be fair, this young interviewer, for whatever reason, got the absolute truth out of Jason that he had never told before, up until that point. So… that’s every interviewer’s dream and why they always bring up the drama.
Metallica were my hero’s growing up. When I was 13 I saw them live for the first time in 1997. I had backstage pass and all. My main hero’s were James and Kirk, but I only managed to get an autograph from Jason, he was the only one that properly spoke to me. Even then I really appreciate that he gave me the time but i always wished I got at least Kirks signature. But watching this interview I’m so glad that it was Jason who spoke to me and gave me his autograph (which I still have) What a great guy I never heard the story from him like this until now
I guarantee there are hundreds of thousands of stores just like yours, where Jason was the only one who interacted with fans. He never forgot what it meant to be a fan.
Candlevoid Lol "passive beta pussy"? He could probably steal your girl, and your friend's girl, and his friend's girl, and his friend's friend's girl in the blink of an eye. You ain't shit.
Kirk and Jason were always my favorites. Kirk because he’s a cool hippy dude. Jason because he was smart and always saved his money to the point of penny pinching. Ex: eating only the kraft food services or supplied at gig events and even packed up left overs for later..... guy was brilliant.
One of the greatest interviews I've ever heard. The important information, Metallica was left rudderless when Cliff died. A spiritual leader and guru, you name it. Jason stepped in those mega-boots and played some of the greatest bass lines on Garage Days, and Justice For All... He was disrespected by then grieving coke heads and alcoholics, turning his amazing bass track off in the mix. And Justice For Jason Remix of AJFA is a nice place to go after this video.
He got in, and got out with perfect timing. Made tons of cash and avoiding the "bottoming" out. Edit: To those who disagree, that's perfectly fine, but their newer music is biege, covered in beige, topped by a yawn. After the black album, that was pretty much it, with the rare exception here and there. They are simply riding on their name, and will continue to do so. They should use Slayer as an example, and hang it up. And yes, I have heard their new stuff, it's generally weak at best.
Sam Johnson yes, while flying their own private jets to every show and not interacting outside of the business. It’s all business and no soul, and it’s been that way for a long time now. Metallica charges like 5,000 bucks for a meet and greet with photo. Fucking lame.
@Sam Johnson no not the selling out part. The integrity part. Jason wanted to write shit like MOP or something like it. Justice was great. But he felt it wasn't going in the right direction aka Black album, load reload. Now add the pressure from other members and it just opens the door for him to leave. Dude didn't really care for the music anymore. So why should he stay?
@@KBizzy it’s a couple grand per person for a vip ticket which is like backstage eating dinner with them not just a meet and greet. If people didn’t steal music and more people went to shows bands wouldn’t need to charge stupid money. Costs a lot of money to have a big production of a show like they play and if I was them I would want to make a shit load of money being on tour gets old and not for nothing what’s a couple grand to hang out with your idol they are coming to you if you had to go to them if would easily cost you a few grand to fly out to California, hotels, food etc...
Heart broken for the man. James treated him like... “Back to the front You will do what I say, when I say Back to the front You will play what I say, you must play Back to the front You new guy You servant You fan boy”. I miss Jason so much in Metallica. Never seen another musician give 110% at every single fucking show the way he did. My number 1 bassist for his playing, and strength of character. A humble and incredibly talented person. Love Jason, hope he has found happiness in his art, wife & life. ♥️
I would like to ask the remain of Metallica one single question: Are you aware everything about the person, bass player and member of Metallica, their brother Jason Newstead? I mean... if you read the comments under single video about Metallica on TH-cam... under every single video can read comments from the fans loving and missing Jason, his contribution to Metallica... All they say about Rob is that he can play bass really good... but that's all, you know... No mettter how old the video is... Fans still just talk about that. Jason, we really miss you... I hope the remain of Metallica knows that..
I'm struck by how understanding he is to the reality that he stepped into. He knew he was entering a no win situation. It's just too bad that he was never fully accepted. Great Bass Player.
he has had a long, long time to think about the dynamics he walked into in 1986. I do wonder how much of it he really grasped then (or if he had competent advice telling him the same at the time). But yes, he articulates it really well.
This was the best interview I have ever seen...hands down. The fact he opened up and spoke on something that was never spoke of until now about the split from the band...WOW...and the way Jason spoke on different things about touring and recording...I personally was able to picture and almost put myself there as it happened with how articulate he was explaining.
Jason Newsted is a fucking stand up guy. When they came to Perth Australia, my friends and I went to the show and we went out back to get autographs and Jason was the only one in the band who stayed back to sign stuff. It was awesome and I will never forget it. We went back the next night to see if the others might sign autographs. Just Jason again. Humble, balanced and centred guy and gave so much in his shows and to his fans. Amazing dude.
Oh wow, what a great interview. He has such a humble, level headed personality. I like how even with the dark secrets he holds, he flat out refuses to talk bad about Metallica. I hate that they parted ways but, clearly it was for the best for him.
He had the time he did cause of what happened to Cliff. Wasn't fair to him too. He doesn't get the credit he deserves,he is great in my opinion. He was with them in their best years imo. I really love him. I like Turillo as well, but Jason has the look, the attitude, the energy, great back vocals...
Jason is way too gracious with them. There is no excuse to be messing with somebody just because Cliff died and they were too immature to handle it the way normal people handle death.
zarni000 “Too Immature to Handle Death the way normal people do...” umm what? They exited the bus to turn around and the first thing that they see is Cliff motionless with his legs sticking out underneath no excatly sure how you'd like them to “handle” that you fuck
Jason would have been worse if he had witnessed a band mate being crushed dead by a bus right in front of him in the middle of a chilling night in Bumfuck, Sweden away from home. You'd never know how you would react especially in your early twenties losing a buddy in those circumstances. Yeah, nobody is "mature" enough at that age to handle that. That shit is burned in their memory forever and they obviously didn't have any therapist then to handle it* so it's pretty bitchy of Jason to judge them going in how he was a victim and whining like a pussy that they "hazed" him when they were totally fucked up on alcohol as a relief from Cliff's death scarring them for life. *Coming from the same Jason that mocked Metallica as "pussies" for getting a therapist to handle their issues after all those years of bottling their turmoil. So they were assholes because they didn't sought help to cope with their grief then they're pussies when they finally decide to seek help to cope with their issues. Remember Jason is actually older than James but was acting like a fanboy kid. James did say that he wanted to shake the fanboy out of Jason because he thought that annoying and phony. If James, Lars and Kirk were such insufferable assholes to him, why didn't he quit earlier? GTFO with the whining and get over it, Jasonic.
I caught a green guitar pick from Jason Newsted in New Orleans when Metallica toured with Guns & Roses. Still have it. Great to see Jason didn't burn his life up like so many other elite musicians have.
I'm literally clapping this guy for his modesty, grounding and level heading analysis of the others in the band. Outstanding interview. What a bass player!!!!
For those too impatient to wade deeply into the interview, Jason made it very clear that any of the abuse he took from fellow band members (whatever the reason) was just the price of being in the band... and the rewards he received were far greater than any burden that created.
Sincerely, I think Trujillo is the perfect fit for Metallica right now, James and Lars are happy, and aren't being idiots in the main time Rob is in the band (bad English I know)
@HopesUp yup, he even had been on Suicidal Tendencies, and lemme tell ya, nobody fucks with a guy that played for a band called SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, he might kill you, or make you commit suicide for being terrorised all the time (I think that's the word).
James: “What are you planning to do with this? Sell shirts, tour?” Jason: “Well ya, as long as it doesn’t interfere with anything with Metallica”. James: “Well other arrangements can be made”. I think I would’ve left too. After everything they went through, to have the nerve to tell another peer what they are and aren’t allowed to do. Props to him for sticking to his decision.
Hetfield's parents divorced in 76, his mother died of cancer in 79, his brother died in 96. If your family keeps being taken away and you have become an alcoholic to deal with it the band becomes your family and become pretty reluctant to let anything have a chance to take it away from you. it's not as simple as just "having the nerve"
He is really just a cool guy. I have been a Metallica fan for almost 30 years and never really paid much attention to Jason as I was really into playing guitar. But now I realise just how cool he is. Better late than never.
Jason has a genius mind. He came out of this in the best light deservedly so. He is a class act. Any band he is a part of has a shot to go deep. He is the real deal . We miss you Jason Newsted.
Jason Newsted is of the most brutally honest and cool guys in music i know. Such a humble, talented and hard working man. It's sad what happened to him with Metallica, but time told the truth and i'm glad things turned out so well for him. And for Metallica as well.
I'm super happy that this whole story was a happy ending for Jason. He seems so humble and so grounded, like he never got lost in all of this, perhaps because he didnt start from scratch and started in the middle of Metallica.

I can't believe that what made him leave was NOT all the abuse (both personal and musical) he went through in 15 years just for not being Cliff but the fact that he wasn't allowed to do what he wanted, as if he was a kid asking his dad permission to go to the park. Great player and even better man.
Yes I respect him for leaving
Yea I heard about how they treated him, I’ve been a Metallica fan since I was a kid and have had nothing but mad respect for their talent as musicians and for them as people, but this makes me very disappointed in them, especially James, the way he treated him after his devotion to the band for 15 years is not ok and I hope they feel bad about it, they should
This is part of the personal abuse, this is the straw that broke the camel's back.
@@sonicsolaceadriantsmith7118 I really don’t blame him for leaving, no one can stand to be treated That way and
Not be treated as equal.

Almost fully agree. Cliff is the best.
I love Cliff & Jason the same. Rob is good but not there level!
Cliff was admittedly the lifeblood of that band at first. But Jason did save the band in such a selfless, fanatic way. James is such a self indulgent POS.
He was very disrespected. Cliff would be very upset. To keep a musician from creating music is a recipe for desaster.
@Lee McDonald yea Rob plays fast with fingers, but he aint even close to jason or cliff. He is just a guy playing bass for them

Jason is so smart, down to earth and totally honest. And not too mention, one bad ass bassist!! Losing him was Metallica's loss 1000%.

I have a completely new respect for Jason Newsted after hearing this interview. I wish him nothing but continued success in all he does musically.
Not sure if Jason has or ever plans to write a book....but he should I’m sure it would be amazing!
Jason is a smart dude and he's a very talented bassist. He and Kirk are my favorite members ever of Metallica.
I could always tell Jason was "trying to keep the grit in the band". it was obvious looking back now. He had such a heavy presence.
Yeah now look at /Metallica\
Jason helped with the look of metallica greatly. His hair and that mean guy kind of look. Nobody else would of been a better fit then jason.
Of course.. He was a fan first 😉
Wow is that where the classic metal ballads went, never thought of that, but the songs have never had the long classic instrumental metal structure since he left.
Jason Newstead is a class act.
Kirk is mad as well.
why is it that the bassist always has the level head, for the most part
Well said 👏
@@gkdunch because usually they dont have to worry about songwriting or running the band etc, just playing. For the most part, not always true
So you love bullies as in James and Lars, I know people who been backstage with Metallica, where James abused Jason, putting him in chokeholds and stuff. Kirk was just passive, he wanted nothing to do with the abuse.
I was surprised to hear him say he was older than Hetfield. You would never know it. James looks 15 years older than him nowadays.
And why do you think that is?

One of the best interviews I have ever seen ! Great questions that made Jason feel comfortable enough to open up & tell all like never before. Such a humble, honest dude & a comparison between Cliff & Jason should never be done as they are both amazing players with different styles \"/
Nothing but respect for Mr. Newsted!
GOD.
True Gentleman....Class Act!!!
Dave Apodaca Yeah I was fortunate to spend time with him and Metallica great guy.
You know I really feel sorry for Jason every interview he's in they have to talk about his departure of metallica. Everyone that follows metallica knows why.
He's a good bloody dude and a great bass player
Happens to every musician that leaves a successful band. Every musician is asked about their most successful period
True, but to be fair, this young interviewer, for whatever reason, got the absolute truth out of Jason that he had never told before, up until that point. So… that’s every interviewer’s dream and why they always bring up the drama.
"Lars liked cocaine then." So did Kirk but he didn't have any pull.
But watching this interview I’m so glad that it was Jason who spoke to me and gave me his autograph (which I still have)
What a great guy I never heard the story from him like this until now
I guarantee there are hundreds of thousands of stores just like yours, where Jason was the only one who interacted with fans.
He never forgot what it meant to be a fan.

Kirk replaced Dave and probably though, "Oh thank God I didn't have to deal with this shit!"
Always thought the same.
When did metallica bottom out? Don't think the rest of the world knows because they're still kicking ass!
"his fate brought about my destiny" .....chills
At castle donnington 1991 during Metallica’s set Jason bowed his head to me in acknowledgment after I had been backstage before the show.
Heart broken for the man.
James treated him like...
“Back to the front

Back to the front
You will play what I say, you must play
Back to the front

I miss Jason so much in Metallica. Never seen another musician give 110% at every single fucking show the way he did. My number 1 bassist for his playing, and strength of character. A humble and incredibly talented person. Love Jason, hope he has found happiness in his art, wife & life. ♥️
One of the best interviews with Jason, intermixed with "yeah, yeah, yeah toadly, right yes yeahyeahyeah toadly"
Yeah yeah totally, mmm yeah
Yeah yeah yeah
I don't think the interviewer was prepped how deep he went in that interview it was a "Holy F**k" moment"!
Seems like the bass players are always the coolest, funnest, nicest guys in metallica
Best Newsted Interview ever...!! Thanks

Jason Newsted is a fucking stand up guy. When they came to Perth Australia, my friends and I went to the show and we went out back to get autographs and Jason was the only one in the band who stayed back to sign stuff. Jason is such a solid character. And a hell of a bass player. And a hell of a vocalist. And a hell of a headbanger....

Also have to remember they were in their mid 20's. You think you're going to live forever at that age

Jason Newsted:The classiest dude in metal.
And that he understands why they acted the way they acted towards him
Jason was the perfect fit for Metallica. A true metal head. Still, he chose to leave the band.
copykon obviously. james and lars were dicks to him.

Wow, who knew Jason Newsted was such an amazingly classy human. Just REALLY inspiring, so proud for him.
James: “What are you planning to do with this? Sell shirts, tour?”
Jason: “Well ya, as long as it doesn’t interfere with anything with Metallica”.
