- Renowned journalist David Fricke joined us in Pittsburgh, PA for a lengthy chat about "...And Justice for All." Our very first feature in Rolling Stone was penned by David and we get into the origins of the nine tracks and cover the making of the first video of our career, “One.” Director Michael Salomon flew in from Seattle to reunite with us for the first time in nearly 30 years to discuss how “One” came together from the concept to final production.

Jason Newsted was there too, but every time he spoke the audio volume dropped down to inaudible. Nobody knew exactly how. Later, they edited the video of him out, it wasn't usable without the audio.

Yeah man..this interview is really, really good. It answers a lot of the questions that I have had about the album since it came out. I still remember getting my cassette. I was in elementary school , grade 3 i believe. It was my first Metallica album..since I was only 9 or 10. Until then, the heaviest thing I had in my tape and album collection was a Poison album. hehe This album blew my mind when it came out and I still love it. As a musician, I wish it had been recorded and mixed differently because it definitely could sound better (not to mention the bass), but would it still be Justice if it had been recorded and mixed differently? Do you know I mean? It kind of sounds like a 'lo-fi headphone' album, if you know I mean. It is hard to explain.

I wish they would of went in depth on rtl or master like this. 15 minutes for MOP, but a hour an half for Justice?
@@michaelr.4878 I don't think i'd be the same album, had it been recorded and mixed differently. The way the album was made, combined with the circumstances the band was under, at that time, made justice what it is. Part of the ...and justice "legacy" (absence of bass, guitar tone, etc) heavily relies on how the album was made, and has shaped that metallica era to us fans' minds. Take as an example, all the re-adaptions of new songs to the justice tone, that fans have done recently.
See that look Kirk gives the host at 27:52 when he says AJFA is their most brutal record,,,.... I don't think Kirk liked that opinion... ?
I love Kirk for pointing out how Jason was a very present force live because he wasn't heard on the album. Through their career Kirk noticed things that James and Lars didn't and I don't think that gets enough attention

Most mid-age fans have already known that Newsted wrote the main riff. Mindblow fact: Jason's bass was basically inaudible on the album, but he was given credit for the song, and duelly so. Think about it.

Rob has now been with them longer than anyone as far as being in the band, I know they are still tight with Jason.

Kirk and Jason were together when the mixing happened with James and Lars. So I think that Jason and Kirk found out at the same time.
I'm read this at that exact part, and I agree.
Kirk has always been the humble and kind one which really kept them glued, I think.
I just want to put it out there, Jason's basslines WEREN'T removed or "silenced" in fact you can find them anywhere here on TH-cam. Jason's bass was ALWAYS there, it's just pretty much near damn inaudible because of the dry and incredibly compressed tone of the album James and Lars just flat out didn't know what the fuck they were doing when they were mixing (which Kirk and Jason were never around for)
Also there's a GREAT Jason interview where he shed A LOT of light on that time period.
Kirks solo's on Justice are absolutely kick ass.
Yeah the solo in Eye of the Beholder is my all time favorite.
My favorite is Blackened solo.
The solo for One is probably my favourite guitar solo of all time.
The best. That was his highest point as a lead guitarist, imo. I get that he’s very Hendrix influenced, but the melodic passages he brought to Justice remain timeless.
The Shortest Straw is one of the most criminally underrated Metallica songs. It's in my top ten favorite songs of theirs and the solo is just a masterwork.

Mine too. Friends argue Ride The Lightning is the best and they may be right but the soul of this album was my soul then and the feel of it was a perfect fit.

31:15 I love how Kirk gave Jason some hype for playing the shit out of the songs when they played live. And he said it.....it was like Jason's way of showing what he's got and for making himslef known for being muted in the album.... After Lars tried to lie about lol
C Rendon I’ve seen a video where the guy who mixed Justice tells the story of how the bass got removed, and it basically shows that Lars was lying through his teeth here. And Kirk knows it. The entire time Lars is talking about it, whenever the camera was on Kirk, he looked visibly upset about it. I think he felt it necessary to put that good word in for Jason. A genuinely great dude, that Kirk is.

@bowhunter 4 life ok, but i feel context matters there. He was stating what they felt AT THAT TIME, they were young drunk and angry. Substituting what basically is a brother with another guy that is basically unknown to them and ending a tour like that must have taken its toll. It's not like they despise him now in the present IMO

Kirk gets hate for no good reasons. He literally created some of the greatest riffs in metal history (master, creeping, enter, ride, etc.) has some incredible under appreciated solos that are quite amazing. The man gets hate for replacing Dave, and because of that people find anything to dig him under. He’s an incredible player and I’m fucking tired of the hate.

Definitely Dyers Eve is probably one of if not my favorite hard fast hitting tracks off that album but that whole album kicks ass!! And honestly James is right they were fucking the tightest back around 88-89' live!! they sounded the best I've ever heard them back then

The album is pretty messy and over-compressed, the tone sounds nice at first, but it gets tiring and ends up sounding brittle/thin. It was a very confusing and hard time for the band since they lost an essential band member. Honestly if Cliff was only injured and not killed, the band would’ve benefitted a whole lot with some advice from Cliff, since Jason became an iconic member with the band. Unfortunately, we can only imagine what could’ve been Justice with Cliff.....

Well the album to this day is there most forgettable Thrash album from the 80s, the Band was too focused on sounding faster, more aggressive, and and more chaotic than their competitors, which harmed their trademark sound. The album’s themes are interesting and the sound does support its paranoid feeling the album radiates, but like I said the tone sounds just too brittle and at times soft.

Finally someone else sees it, ajfa is great dint get me wrong but it does sound "brittle/thin" but people claim it as super heavy I dont understand that logic, MOP on the other hand is heavy with the chug chug chug riffs. Yes! Honestly Master of Puppets gives a claustrophobic feeling fitting with the themes the album talks about. Justice is too thin and brittle at times and makes the experience of listening it more a chore than a head banging session. Yes, Justice a great album but it’s Metallica’s least enjoyable thrash album from the 80s. I will say that mixing in Jason’s Bass does help it feel more heavy and aggressive.
I'd say yes to this but ONLY for frayed ends....that song is like the definition of technical, super long, transitions everywhere
The ONLY thing that would make this interview better is if Jason was included in this....would love to hear some stories from his point of view, who else agrees?

Justice was the angriest and most real Metallica album. Kill em all was too influenced by their idols, then they started finding their own sound in subsequent albums especially master of puppets but the combo of realness and aggression hit its peak on justice.
To me Puppets is their perfect masterpiece

It's angrier because when Jason left they felt like they lost a brother again, only they felt guilty for it, that makes it stronger.
My dad died last June and my mom has a few weeks left if that. This album is giving us a new way of connecting with a lot of great memories of them taking me to my first concert in 98 in Dallas and countless times they listened to y’all with me and the first time when they listened to make sure metal was safe for me at 13. Love the new album so much. Great work guys

@John James Sure the bass was audible before he fucked with the levels. He told the producer to drop all of Jason's levels and turn up the drums. He claims it was just supposed to be temporary but that is what ended up as the final mix. So the band obviously had to approve the final cut. Im sure Lars thought it was great considering his drums are high and front and center in the mix just like his narcissistic self likes to be. Now considering James holds equal weight in the band its a surprise he approved the mix as the guitars are fairly thin as well. Its begging for a bass level which really would add a much fuller and more dynamic overall sound to subpar production. I still love the album regardless of its faults.

Hey, thanks for clearing this up. I had to stop the video and look for comments on this exact thing. With James laughing and Kirk saying something "controversial", I thought this would turn into a huge diss to Jason.
Also, I think Kirk missed the point a little. Prophetic? Yes, if said by a music critic. But this was their eventual band mate ( and/or friend?).
I think he appreciated them a "little" more, than they did him.
I think Kirks guitar solos really added to the vibe and atmosphere of the songs.

Same here man, specifically the song "one" which, Justice was literally the first cassette tape that I ever bought in my life , which I bought in early 1995, bought it right before my 13th birthday. That album started me into a lifelong love for all music , especially metal, and more specifically especially Metallica, as well as a love for playing the guitar and metal music. Today at 39 I still listen to Metallica abouts just as much as I did back then , always make sure I make a few minutes in my everyday to listen to at least a few songs , puts me in the right place.

I still remember going down to Al's Record Hut and picking up the cassette. I didn't turn it off for two years.
I was in 8th grade, bought my cassette from Hills dept. store in Bflo, NY. Listened to it over and over and over...And guess what? NOBODY back then said shit about the bass!!

I had the tape and the words wore off the side. It sounded like it was gonna fall apart in its last days. I had the records Too and they were scratched all to hell. Finally got it on cd next and that actually made it a little further

I think it's awesome that james respects Jason's live performance, jason really did take his part seriously like 10 fold over. Guy was a beast live
Justice to me is the definitive Metallica album in terms of their speed, precision and harmonies. Everything else had a specific direction but Justice was pure controlled chaos. The bass thing aside, I feel that Jason's ability to keep up with that speed and precision is an attestment to their sheer force. It's my favorite Metallica album because even if not all the riffs jive, they commit fully to them and it just sounds great.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Kirk isn't over what happened on that album and the cameraman certainly picks up on that. Kirk was the closest to Jason just like he was with Cliff, and it shows when Lars speaks of himself and James being the gatekeepers (the shot pans to Kirk's face) Kirk at that moment begins to boil up the explanation for what Jason felt and he ended up doing live. I love Rob and the fact he brings back the fingered bass like Cliff, but to me Metallica as the 'machine', as this larger than life crushing force was very much because of Jason and his piercing presence on stage. Everyone always speaks of his ungrateful task in filling Cliff's shoes, but what they seem to forget is the massive military boots he walked in wearing. I envy anyone who has seen them live between '88 and '99, but I have no doubt that Rob is another successful part of the Metallica journey and I am really glad these guys are in the place they are! Big fan.
I got to see them in 88, 89, 92, 96, 98. And there is a vast difference in Metallica back then and now. Nothing against Trujillo but Newsted is the bass player and he was the heartbeat of the band. He kept Lars in tune and on time. Lars playing was never better. Now he's all over the place. They treated Newsted like a second class citizen and after 15 years he said im done with your bullshit and im out. They have never bern the same. And they are still good live because I've seen them twice with Trujillo but nowhere near the beast that was when Newsted destroyed Cities with them.

Saw the Justice tour in Vancouver, and actually met Jason the night before down on Robson Street. The show was absolutely insane. One of the best shows I've seen of any band. Loved it. Compare that to, say, the Death Magnetic tour, and it just isn't the same thing anymore. Some things have matured and are better, but some stuff has been lost with time, too.

Born in 2001 and raised by my dad. Was 5 when I got his puppets record cassette and CD. He told me when I'm older I'll understand how important this band is. Now I'm 17 and this band is the most important to me and growing up with mainstream media and anarchy in certain places I've learned that the music they write connects with these certain topics. I got my ajfa record when I turned 10 and I learned that their songs connect to real life things. Happy 30 years to the justice album. Hope to hear them play ...And Justice For All at my show. "Justice" is thee greatest record ever made in my opinion......by any artist of any genre! Yes I am biased! Metallica is #1! Always has been, always will be! There is no greater musical force period! The influence these guys have had on my life is astounding! Love you James, Kirk, Lars, Rob, Jason and Cliff!
Kirk, the only guy in the band that respects Jason until this day.
You do know at the start of the interview Kirk said "How pathetic was that?" in response to Jason's quote? Also no, they never disrespected Jason. People have completely blown his situation out of proportion. He was only bullied during the first 6 months in the band, then Jason went on to say they always had a brotherly bond, and loved each other. Fun fact: James only kept Jason from doing his own project, because he was worried Jason would leave or grow apart from them. It sucks, and they didn't know any better about anything back then, but they did love each other. Lars and Jason still actively talk. In my opinion the mix had no malicious intent, and was probably just turned down since even before Jason joined the band James and Lars never liked bass unless it had a crazily played part, or an added solo. Even on their demo tapes they wrote "Turn bass down". None of this was really intended to hurt Jason. There are so many clips of the band joking around, yet somehow the fans can't see it as a harmless joke for the cameras, and take it too seriously, as if they were heavily insulting the man.

One has their best writing and guitar tracks. And drums were awesome. Their performance in Seattle 89' is just uncanny.
It's like Kirk isn't there. I realize James and Lars started the band but Kirk was there pretty much from the beginning. Throughout this entire video I didn't see any of them turn their heads to Kirk and ask him something or acknowledge him in anyway. I take my hat off for Kirk for being so ego-less all these years because those two obviously don't treat him as equal. That being said - I love both James and Lars
Because they are the decision makers. If Kirk wanted in, he would step in. You can't have too many strong minds in a band, it can create chaos. Some are louder, some quiter, etc...
Poor kirk. Getting paid millions to keep his ego in check. I trade places with him in a heartbeat.

This was such a great interview! Definitely would have been nice to have Jason there also. This album was huge for me. I was in a bad place at that time and it actually made me feel like I wasn’t alone.

What he says is understandable. The songs were so long and full of so many parts that it would have been easy to get lost in all the bits and pieces. Mapping out arrangements is helpful, especially with intricate songs.
@Mick Doolan any beginner could do better than Kirk in 2016. No one could do better than Kirk in the 80's.
He wrote a lot of riffs in that album, given that he's a cowriter on several songs.
@@kartikchandrasekhar4181 Kirk has contributed to many, many songs. To confirm this just look up the songs that he has co-writing credit on. Next, for the people who put down his playing on hard-wired. If you watch the "in the making of" video's you will see that he played what was requested, which was mostly all improv. On one of those videos, he a brought in a multilayered demo idea that he wanted to record over the lead section of a song ( and it sounded awesome) Lars shot it down, wanting the solos to stay raw and uncomplicated. I have played Guitar since getting inspired by Metallica in the early 80's. These days I can play anything that I hear. So I will say with confidence that Kirk maybe is not as passionate as he used to be. But trust that he could blow most people away on guitar if he wanted to. Plus, He still has aggressive chops, just listen to his solo on the recent Exodus album

He tries to say its was all balanced which was total bullshit. Yes Lars had amazing playing on the album. The album is amazing but he knows who's responsible for Jason's parts barely existing.

Absolutely fantastic. Sitting down with Metallica going into deep detail about one of their albums is like a fan dream. Thanks so much for this.. Justice is still my favorite album. The interviewer said it perfect when he described it cutting like a knife. You can hear the pain on that album. It is so raw yet technical, so brutal yet mesmerizing. One of my all time fav albums. Will be buying the deluxe set.
There needs to be an interview like this for each of their albums. We need more stories from back in the day

…And Justice For All was the first Metallica album I purchased & it set the tone for my taste in music going forward. Used to wait for my parents to go to work so I could blast Harvester of Sorrow while air guitaring.

Rob talking about running to Metallica songs just reminded me of a special time in my life. For those who were around then will remember when The Black album came out what now is referred to as the war on terror had just begun. I was in boot camp in the Army when the conflict started and a die hard Metallica brethren. During PT runs I would have my Walkman on and would listen to Metallica during the run. I knew which songs would pace a two mile run. I would keep up with Lars. One song for a casual 15 minute two mile time or another song for a 12 minute time. I haven’t thought about that until listening to this interview. Now I’m flooded

So happy “Frayed Ends of Sanity” is brought up so much. It was always my favorite song on the album. Total masterpiece...”One” was right there, but it got so much airtime and play I just had heard it too much at that time.
Ask Lars why he turned down Jason’s bass track on the album.
I saw an interview with the dude who mixed Justice. According to how he described it, Lars' explaination is part of it. He had a specific drum sound he wanted so he did it, then showed James, who didnt like it, so they mixed it again so all the instruments could be heard, but then they played it for Lars who shook his head and said no. The Mixing engineer looked to James who just shrugged at that point. I do think James' past statements about the state of the band at that time sums it up best. Justice is the sound of a band that had been firing on all cylinders for 6 straight years and at that point were completely burned out. Lars wanted his drums to sound a certain way, but I think James and Kirk were at the point where they just wanted to get the album out and get back on the road. I dont think it was any real animosity towards Jason, especially when you hear other interviews where James and Kirk talk about having to mix Justice between shows and that it was before they started wearing earplugs. They would go from the show straight to the studio, listen to the mix while their ears were still ringing, and then do it again the next night. Its no excuse for the bad mix, but at least it helps it to make sense.
I think at the time Jason was still in "HOLY SHIT I'M IN FUCKING METALLICA" mode and was still just happy to be there so he didnt even think to voice an opinion on it.

It pissed them off to no emd, but once they saw what he was doing, his production methods were a no-brainer. And lets also give a shout out to Randy Staub for his awesome job on the engineering side of things. Dude was invaluable to the production of the black album!
In my opinion - the Album is better without bass. And i think the real reason is simple - Jason just played so different than Cliff. And that just did not really fit to that Metallica sound. At least its my perception when i hear the demos with the bass. It just does not sound right. It sounds better without it...and thats probably the reason why Lars&James "mixed Jason out of the Album"....and they were right to do so. Back then, not even 2 years after Cliff died - most of the fans probably would have had similar feelings.

I met them in 2004. James means what he said about "I want to know about you". I looked at him and said "you changed my life". And he looked at me intensely and said "what do you mean? How?" And he was serious. He wanted to know. I wasn't prepared for that and kind of fumbled around. Lars was the last to come through and me and one other guy were at the end of the line. He ended up chatting with us for so long that someone came out and said "Lars, we gotta go, you're on!!". He said "yeah in a sec" and kept chatting for a few. Kirk was warm and friendly too. Amazing when you meet your heroes and they blow your expectations out of the water in a good way. True heroes.
I started listening to justice again after 15 years and started learning them on guitar. Justice is Prog AF! and I love it more now, than when i heard it in my teens. The more complex song structures, huge tempo changes and massive tone changes
Really enjoyed the discussion about the video for 'One'. That video came out when I was in middle school when I just started playing drums. That single video catapulted me into a life-long love for heavy music...and where I discovered Metallica. Up to that point, I was taking piano lessons and listening to mostly things like the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel. Boy did Metallica have other plans for me lol. That song/video will always have a soft place in my heart.
As Metallica progressed and succeeded in their careers after Cliff died, the "what would Cliff do?" or, "what would Cliff say?" was always asked. The fact that newsted got snubbed on Justice, I can only imagine that Cliff was rolling in his grave in utter disappointment with Lars and James. To think they'd treat his successor with such disrespect would anger him to no end.👎
They buried their grief and Jason’s hazing and punishment was the way it came out unfortunately. I think when it came to the bass tracks on the album they didn’t want to to deal with it, because that was Cliff’s thing, so they buried that too. It wasn’t right, and the way they treated Jason wasn’t right, but I think they know that now.
You have to take to consideration that they didnt know what to do after cliff died and they started getting drunk to relieve the pain of cliff passing

It's well known that the other guys (James especially) hated how much of a fan Jason was. A lot of the time Jason would just play along to whatever James was doing, to the point of James turning around so he couldn't see what he was playing.
In stark contrast to Cliff, who was very much an older brother type of person to the other members, and would have original ideas and influence them heavily in their playing. Jason was just this replacement who was following them around, doing whatever they were doing and was a fanboy to boot.
I think those things contributed to them turning down his bass in the mix, to get a reaction out of him. To see if he would stand up for himself and tell them to turn it up again.

Anger is a part of grieving.. they just so happened to direct it at Jason unfortunately. It's not like they kicked his ass everyday, call it what you want but he took it all the way to the bank. When he signed, he never had to worry about money again.
@@4md17 Cliff was James his best friend, very clearly visible in an interview with James and Cliff here on YT. and to be honest, i love james, as a singer, guitarist, and human being, and without trying to justify how they all were treating Jason: i get it.. James still has issues coping with the loss of Cliff. Because of that loss, James never slowed down with alcohol and i guess he kind of has a really bad attitude if he is wasted. Venting his anger he had over the loss of Cliff out on Jason.. every time.. i think james' alcohol addiction would never had happened if Cliff was still around.

i was in high school when this album came out...i didnt understand the appeal of One..It wasnt until cruising around with a friend one night and he put on the Master of Puppets cassette and i heard The Thing That Should Not Be. I was blown away and that's what hooked me in. I missed the Justice tour date in my town by probably a week or so...i was so pissed I had missed it. Still am!

Listening to Lars talking "when me and James did" all the time, how would you behave?
One of the things that drew me towards thrash metal bands was the punk rock attitude and energy. Metallica has always been a working class band and it’s what really separated them from a lot of other bands. I really love, admire and relate to that attitude.
God bless you guys. It's amazing hearing you talk about your career and records, what happened, what your mindsets were. It's invaluable and gives us such a human insight into what is METALLICA.

If you look to other interviews, is easy to tell when Kirk is nervous and/or uncomfortable, like when he was asked every time about what happen in HWTSD and not being in the writing credits. He gets like in the moment that I pointed, saying he lost his phone. But I remember an interview with James saying that Kirk was laying, he just not participated this time.
Besides, Rasmussen has said to Loudwire that it was all Lars' idea.

Rob is 100% correct. Justice is a concept album, whether or not that was their intent. Though not all concept albums’ track listings are sequential, if you rearrange the track listing, it tells a story. A story that is more relevant to the times we live in now I think than it was when it came out. James was at the absolute top of his game, lyrically and vocally. This album is not only unlike any Metallica record, but unlike any other metal record in general. Hands down my favorite Metallica album, and one of the most relevant and important albums ever put on record, for a multitude of reasons. The atmosphere it creates, the message it delivers, the musicianship, to the stigma of the final mix. A unique masterpiece.

@@tmrevenge yea but he's only been on 2 albums. And tgeyre not the prolific ones. Metallicas golden period is slightly over a decade from like 83-95. Amd I'd eben say up to 2000. Playing fuel on MTV and stuff solidified them to the next gen. I was born a year and a day after cliff died but my dad used to work out to and justice for all while I was in the playpen so it had some effect. I'm a drummer meathead haga
