    I slacked on the preventative meds, found an adult flea on my blanket yesterday. Bought a flea comb, some home treatment and dog sprays, flea light traps, washed all blankets, cleaned the whole house, and have vacuumed 3 times in the last two days. Now I’m here. No signs of fleas on my dogs, did the towel and flea comb test and found nothing. I’m still going to clean like a mad woman for 3 months. Ugh!

      You are absolutely smart to keep cleaning girl! That one flea can make an army if left a lone! Your home will thank you anyway! Hope you got em, but keep doing the stuff to make sure

    In the past we have had fleas in the carpet. One thing we did, which worked wrll, was put a shallow dish of water on the floor. But you must add dish soap to the water, any kind will do. The dish soap changes the surface tension of the water . Fleas can use surface tension to jump out. Put a crookneck lamp over the dish of water with a light bulb that produces heat. Fleas will jump toward the warmth of the lamp, fall in the water, and because they can't use surface tension to jump out (remember the dish soap?) They sink and drown. We've done this more than once and it works and will help in ridding your home of fleas. But consistent vacuuming and prevention are first and foremost

    You do a really good job at explaining this horrible parasite (how the whole situation can get out of hand really fast) that i have dealt with 3 times in 15 months. Agreed on VIVA paper towels, they are pretty awesome. I wish tackling fleas with a long-haired cat was as easy as this though! Washing my cat is NOT fun - and yes, it does work to get them off, but drying him isn't really worth the washing. I honestly have a masters degree in flea control after these 3 times. I vacuumed every day for 3 months = miserable. And hours of laundry every single day to get rid of the Fers. I cannot use topical flea meds because one of my guys got a head tremor from them (Revolution from my vet). And I cannot use chemicals like KnockOut either. No chemicals, so it's rough. And the one cat with the problem with them has flea allergy dermatitis. It's like a living hell. I think what you didn't cover is treating your yard! That has saved me big time!

    • @askavettech2057
      @askavettech2057  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      thank you for your lovely comment, I didn't cover treating the yard, because it's a very hard thing to do and do well. I guess if I would recommend treating the yard, I would leave that to the professional bug killing companies! I wish you the best of luck, and hope that they don't come back!!!! Hugs

    • @Floppycats
      @Floppycats 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh, man I wish it was that easy, but for those of us with cats that cannot be exposed to the chemicals - we have to do the spraying ourselves - Cedarcide or Tick KIllz and then nematodes to help the fleas get eaten.@@askavettech2057

    Fleas in house, get a really bright light on a bendable stand,8 to 12 inches off the floor, set next to dog bed, put a saucer with a mix of 2 teaspoons of dish washer ing soap in a pint of water, shake gently each time, fill saucer, fleas will jump in and die, clean saucer every day, you will not believe how many you will kill, keep up til all gone, WORKS FOR ME and simple.

    (For anyone struggling) Do yourself a favor. Get a can of “Knockout” from Chewy. Vacuum your house, wash all bedding blankets etc. and treat your house with this stuff. I tried all these “tricks” I found online and this is what the vet recommended. We got an extra can to treat the house next flea season before there’s a problem.

      When is flea season?

    • @askavettech2057
      @askavettech2057  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      flea season is at its worst right now, because fleas are trying to get inside a warm house in preparation for the cold winter months here in Michigan. Some places that have a warmer climate can have year round flea season, because they never have to deal with the cold temps.

    Thank you for the tips. I didn’t think about the flea comb. It’s also important to chemically treat the OUTSIDE of the house too (where fleas come from) and the floor of the house with certain chemicals. Green Akers pest control goes into detail in their videos. Once the chemical is dry, it’s not harmful to pets.

    The soap kills the adult flea, but what about the eggs? I bathed my dog and the fleas are gone but, I see a lot of white specs 😖, she's all black so it's easy to see the eggs (once you know they're eggs), not so easy to see the fleas. Also, I steamed my couches and bed, now I need to figure out what to do about the lawn and decide on preventative care with the vet.

    • @askavettech2057
      @askavettech2057  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it does coat the eggs, but the soap suffocated the fleas that's why they died. So when you get the flea prevention that will kill the new fleas. You can use a flea comb to comb the eggs off the dog too

    • @askavettech2057

      Well I guess I didn't realize that Dawn was not a national brand! I looked up that fairy liquid and it looks like similar ingredients, I would do the simplest scent/ not ultra. And make sure you rinse the animal very well. Could you call your local vet and ask if that would work to kill fleas in the short term on your pet? Might not hurt to make the call. Also worth noting dawn and fairy liquid are both made by Procter and Gamble

    Omg my dog has been twitching for over a year. I had taken her to the vet last year and they said if I was really concerned- they could send her to a pet neurologist. Fast forward to over a YEAR later (now)…I finally saw one of those nasty things, pulled out her flea comb 🪮. I could t believe my eyes!!! 😭 I also couldn’t believe her vet didn’t think about this as a potential problem to look into in the first place! 😤 How bad will this be if it went on for over a year until I caught it? I have MS and really hope this situation hasn’t transferred onto me. 😭 Also, I’m SO GLAD I landed on your video!

    • @askavettech2057
      @askavettech2057  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Firstly, great job for catching those fleas! Honestly, fleas were probably the last thing on their radar if you said the dog has been twitching, I'm sure that vet was thinking seizure activities. Still, they should have done a full exam....sorry they missed that.
      Moving ahead, if you are worried about what fleas can give you, talk to your doctor and have them run a blood test checking for things fleas can give you. I understand your concern. It's time to get to work and get that doggie flea free! Being you have MS, it might take a lot out of you to deep clean the house, maybe call a friend and see if they would help!

    I have just started my own struggle with fleas. I wish i would have know what i was signing up for and how much of a nightmare that they are. This is my first dog, and i stopped using flea and tick preventions after Tick season ended, and totally forgot about the fleas. I didn't think that the product that i had was working anyways, as when the ticks got on him, the topical coat on his back would kill the ones on his back, but the ones that bit him on his belly would latch and bite. I got into the habit of just manually finger finding and removing ticks, and thought that it was a scam, and totally forgot about the fleas, which are apparently, way worse.
    I've started the process of cleaning my house, first by sweeping (it was already dirty), then i was going to mop, and then vacuum. I'm glad i dont have carpet. Im going to buy some of that Knockout stuff, and just try to do my best.
    I have given my dog a male beagle two baths in dawn, and some of the fleas survived both times. What would recommend to get the fleas off of him? And what brand would you recommend for the prevention when i do finally kill all the fleas on the dog?

    • @askavettech2057
      @askavettech2057  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am SO sorry you are battling fleas, and that your prevention didn't seem to help, sometimes ticks have to bite to die, they get the medicine from the blood stream...but if they were still alive while attached it sounds like it wasn't working. If I had to pick my favorite product for fleas and tick control it would be vectra 3d for topical application and nexgaurd for oral prevention...that being said those are products you need to get from the vet...so please consult them because you want to make sure they will not be a contradiction to any health issues, or medicine the dog currently has or is taking. The dawn dish soap bath is to kill fleas on the dog, did you let it sit on the dog for a bit, also they fleas in the environment can re infect the dog if they just jump on him after his bath.. I wish you the best of luck, if you are looking for something over the counter to purchase, seresto collar is really good

I always suggest testing the fabrics to make sure, but I have never seen it Bleach out any fabric and I have used it a lot in the vet clinic. you want to let it sit and work for about 15 mins, then you could wipe your counter tops. If it is a fabric type item, just leave it don't try to wash it off

      Yes the dish soap and even human baby shampoo destroys the PH balance of your pets skin which is more sensitive than humans. Also dish soap does not kill eggs of fleas or ticks. It’s just bad all the way around. I’m not sure who started recommending it. I guess because they watched a commercial with a duck coated with oil in a commercial and dawn was used to clean the oil off which is a rare situation people now think it’s a great thing?? Any dish soap or human shampoo will kill alive fleas not just dawn but it’s a very bad choice to make for your pets.

    Do you recommend Advantage II? Are the drops from vets different than the strong stuff sold in pet stores?

    • @askavettech2057
      @askavettech2057  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great Question!! I do like that product, but only issue I have with it, is it doesn't go into the blood stream so if your pet were to need a bath or grooming after applying the meds, it could wash off. It is ment to stop the bugs from ever biting your pet. Which is a great idea, I just am not sure how well it actually stays on the pets. Most vets have stepped away from carrying it because of that reason. It is a great product as long as they pet doesn't get super wet. There are some differences in flea meds you buy from your veterinarian or off the shelf. 1st one the vet will check expiration dates and send expired medicine back, walmart/ petco/ and such usually don't. The medicine carried by your vet has been through MANY drug trials for safety and quality and purity. The manufacturers stand behind the medical science of it. From a retail store you have no one standing behind you! Also the medicine you purchase at your vet office often has rebates/ discounts and deals with it. Just ask! Hope this helped!!! I would say the advantage II is absolutely better than no protection at all! Have a great day!

      Thank you so much for the quick and detailed response! I just took in a stray cat that my sister had been watching the past 2 months (outside in her yard, was in bad shape with fleas and missing fur/scabby skin and super hungry) and I sent some Advantage & antibiotic pet ointment to use on him before she drove him out to me 2 states away. His fur has ALL grown back. He's been inside for a day now and I haven't seen any fleas or flea dirt on him after using a flea comb, so I'm hoping the Avantage did its job and that all or at least most of the eggs fell off of him in the past few weeks since his first treatment. He goes to the vet this week and I'm hoping for a clean bill of health in every other regard as well and I'll definitely continue treatment in the future with whatever the vet suggests instead!@@askavettech2057

    How do you feel about using permethrin 10?

    • @askavettech2057
      @askavettech2057  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! Permethrin 10 is labeled safe for use on dogs and live stock, to be absorbed through the skin for prasite control. As far as flea prevention, yes, you could use it. It is the same active ingredient that is in K-9 Advatix- BUT it can be toxic if they ingest it orally. It can control fleas for up to 35 days (per label) SO as long as you mix the ratio correctly for dogs and apply, and allow it to dry before your dog is able to lick it according to the label it should be safe. Now if it were me trying something new like that, it can not hurt to give your veterinary office a call to ask their thoughts on this, and if you are going to try it, do it when the office is open incase there is an adverse reaction you have medical help available. Thank you for your question!

If you have applied the K9 advantage don't bathe them for a bit, there is another product I would recommend if they are not dying quickly- giving a capstar tablet orally- they sell them at Walmart. They will kill everything on your pet for 12-24 hrs. it's a quick acting/ but short acting medicine. I would not use the dawn soap at this time, because it will wash off the topical medicine you just put on the dog. Make sure to vacuum and treat them home and any cats living in the home as well. I haven't just heard things, I have seen dogs have multiple seizures from their products, and if your dog licks their fur after baths, then they might vomit. It is also really toxic to cats.

    • @tabbyb3514

      That is nonsense "if your pet is going to have a seizure they will anyway" well those chemicals will definitely not prevent the seizure
      Noone who really understands the dangers of these chemicals should be giving their animals this if they really care about their pets

      The dog could be having an allergic reaction to the vets-best flea spray. I'm sorry you and your dog are going through this. Just know Even if you seen just 2 fleas they are still in the environment, Maybe just use the spray on your house and get some flea medicine from the vet, that they recommend- and if the dog has lost a ton of hair, the hair follicles are probably damaged, it might take a bit of time for it to start to grow back.

      I had heard that your part of FL had been really bad with fleas. I would guess that the fire ants were super helpful. I am sorry your dealing so heavily with them. I would ask for an oral medication from the vet. The reason I feel that would be best is it is continued medication for 30 days, you need at least 3 months worth of continued prevention to kill them and their life cycle. I sure hope that my video helped you understand all of the ins and outs of these little monsters life. I will pray that you find relief soon from the fleas, you might consider year round flea prevention. Nexgaurd or simparaca is what I would recommend for your dogs, and revolution if you have any cats.

      Sammysworld5485…same here…ive been watching kibble vids for pets and learned kibble is awful and not even worth buying. Ive read comments below some vets’ videos and theyre horror stories involving the vaccinations for fogs, and kibble we feed them.
      I did learn a lot about fleas and subscribed to this channel…but will keep looking for a more holistic channel.
      Dr. Judy Norton (?) here on TH-cam does a lot of research on the subject. Theres a “Teter” or “Titer” test that can tell if your pet still has traces of the vaccine they received, and may not need the next set?
      Can you please elaborate on that?

      The soap can be toxic IF they ingest it, on the skin and rinsed off is not. And the fleas are way more harmful than the soap. That is why they use it on wild life in oil spills. You must use the plain blue dawn tho. I am sure the others are toxic.
