Manu came here on a 6 month holiday visa and never went back the lad said himself that he owes england rugby alot for making him the player he is now so that's why he chose england over samoa to play international rugby for
The oldest brother Fereti had a contract from a club in England. Fereti got his brother Alesana a contract from a club in England..Both were not chosen for England not even were on trials for England team. Samoa approached the 2 oldest brothers to play for Samoa and they did play for Samoa. Manu is the youngest of the family. His brothers who now live in England permanently, brought Manu for better education and an opportunity to better his talent. England chose him for their team, so why not?
Maa Nonu, Kevin Mealamu, Isaia Toeava, Mils Muliaina, Digby Ioane, Tana Umaga, Jerry Collins, John Afoa, Jerome Kaino, Robbie Fruean, Vito...and many players who opted not to play for Samoa. I respect their choice. Not that Samoa's current squad is up to scratch, but imagine if these players played for the Manu. Samoan rugby would've been a more dominant force in the world of rugby. Back to reality I hope Manu Samoa does well in the 2011 world cup and show the world what they're capable of.
@tobysluck by fixed view i didn't mean you aren't open to changing your view. I meant that you seem to view someone as either being english or not english. I think it's more down to the individual than that. For example, only half of my immediate heritage is english, but i've lived here my whole life and don't consider myself to be welsh or scottish at all (the other side of my family). Similarly, Manu Tuilagi has lived here since he was 13, and if he feels like it is part of his identity...
Manu's lived in England since he was 13, which made him eligible. He chose, of his own free will, to play for England over Samoa. I can't remember anyone getting mad about Dan Parks playing for Scotland despite being from Australia, or New Zealander Tony Marsh playing for France. Lome Fa'atau, who was born, raised, and educated in New Zealand played for Samoa and no one complained.
Im a Samoan but im proud that Manu has chosen to play for England. Its no different to the Allblacks and Australia. European and southern hemisphere rugby teams have world class facilities, they help sharpen polynesian players skills and turn them into weapons because of their genetics. If they respect you and treat you right there should be no shame in representing your adopted country, the only difference is every hit, every tackle, every try, Samoan and England fans will both be cheering.
I agree, but England gave him and education, (No offence to Somoans) a better lifestyle, a country to live in, so we are not stealing he came here and since we gave him a place to grow up in we have in a way earned the right to have him play for our rugby team, but i do agree with your point.
@Msvilley03...alesana didnt get picked so he had to go to samoa..but manu wanted to stay and play for the money so he could pay alesana back in leicsters
@peretaniaca your right, he WOULD knock him out, but ive met manu before, he is a very laid back bloke, me and my dad had a nice chat with him. When i shook his hand, i couldn't believe how big his hands were! lol
No-one criticizes Scotland; Samoa; France because they don't do this kind of thing half as much as England do. England are known culprits for scouting across the board for players to play for them. And most of them learned their Rugby in their country of birth. Barrit; Waldrom; Botha; Flutey; Hartley; Fourie; Hape, & the list go's on(& on). Yes, other countries have been known to do the same, but not nearly as much as England.
manu has acheived alot in his career and life,he made alot of mistakes, but has matured alot since then and gone onto bigger things, somehting that could not have been possible if he was 3 years old.You should look up to manu as a rolemodel, and stop hating on someone thats better than you.
@tobysluck Indeed they'd be awesome. Even without that, I reckon Samoa are going to be a major force at this world cup. Food for thought though: 17 of Samoa's world cup squad were born in New Zealand. So perhaps that debunks the "NZ rape and pillage the Pacific Islands" myth.
8 years late but it just shows him as an immigrant?? Besides he spent a longer time living in Samoa during the time of this interview than he did in England
Right cause at what 12 years old, whilst moving over to England he predicted that he'd be given the option to join the side and thought it would be a good business opportunity? Plus most of the All Black tallent comes from players of samoan, tongan or fijian decent, couple that with the fact that both New Zealand ans Australia are famous for shipping young, potential players from the islands and handing them a passport and giving them citizenship in the hope that they'll turn into good players.
Manu.. you should punch the interviewer the way you hit Chris Asthon. Good luck playing for england my uso.. any englishman, and samoan for that matter should be supporting him..
His name is Manu Samoa but he wants to play for England, the dude can't even speak english properly. I'm not knocking his choice but it would've been awesome to see him play for the Manu and that goes for all the samoans who opted to play for their residential nation instead of there cultural home nation.
@tobysluck ...then I don't see who you are to tell him he is wrong. Also, what do you mean by 'if samoa had a rich league..?' His family live her and he plays for leicester either way. He could still have played for samoa as well as leicester if he wanted and not affected his earnings.
This guy is 20 and he could be the missing link England has been looking for in the midfield. I`d put money on it. Comes from a family of rugby players that should have a movie made about them.
England used to give NZ rugby stick for being poachers, but they have gone quiet over the last few years with Hape, Paul, Tuialgi, Waldrom, and so many others in the England rugby side. The English cricket team is full of south africans, they might as well call it a multi-national side.
You talk about stealing but it was his overall choice, he felt himself that he had spent enough time in the country to deem a place in the england side which we were more than happy to oblige. Why the sudden attack on the england side for 'stealing' poorer countries players, have you seen the NZ side lately?
@tobysluck what do you mean home-grown? He's lived here since he was 13 and played all his rugby here. I've been a huge England fan since I was 5 (16 years now) and have no problem with people playing for the their chosen country WITHIN THE RULES. That's what rules are for. From your reply you seem to have quite a fixed view of identity - you're either English or you're not - and in a globalised world we're seeing more and more evidence that it someone's identity is more complicated than that
You have to have eligibilty first by becoming a citizen of New Zealand and if you're good enough like really really really good then possibilities are that even though age may not be on your side that the talent you may possess as a Good Rugby Player well get you as far as becoming the first asian to play for NZ not as a kiwi citizen but a converted one :)
Dude, please tell me who currently plays for the All Blacks, that was not born there; or moved there as a young man ? Mouritz Botha; Thomas Waldrum; Brad Barrit; Matt Stevens; Dylan Hartley have all recently been called up for England. All of these guys learned their Rugby in the country of birth. They only emigrated after going Pro, when English Scouts offered them opportunities to play abroad. Its not like any of them come from neighboring countries, as is the case with Pacific Islands & NZ.
@tobysluck said it already but who cares where someone is born? there is more to someone's identity to where they happened to be when they were born, and there is more to it than just whatever your parents are. If someone has spent a huge chunk of their life and the entirety of their career in a country then you can't begrudge them feeling part of it.
and why was he brought up in England...cause he knew he could make a lot of Money there through rugby...sick of seeing Samoan players playing for New Zealand, Australia and England just because of that...i'm glad the Samoan selectors have begun to become really strict on their selection process where if you don't pick Samoa first, then don't ever come back if you don't make it to those other nations
Maybe he just isn't good with doing interviews? I have heard a lot of people short of things to say because they find giving interviews and talking with reporters difficult. He grew up in England and chose to play for the Tigers and England. No one is stealing him , this is his own choice, so enough with the sour grapes already.
Dude, both New Zealand & Australia together can't compare to England when it comes to fielding players from abroad. England take the cake by far. And I have always been of that opinion, so its not sudden. In fact England do this in all Sports more than any other country by offering huge wods of sweaty money to players like these. Its not like he wanted to live there because of the shit weather, or the unfriendly people.
"yes it is another tuilagi, what are you the fifth, sixth in the production line but you are english which is good news for us" WELL THAT WAS NICE did the interviewer think he was being funny, or is he just awful at interviewing
biggest misconception from the northern hemisphere ,where the biggest pacific Island and if you watch underage tourneys or interview Pacific players who play for us they speak with a kiwi accent because there kiwis.
I've asked this before & I'll ask it again.Who in the NZ team did not grow up in NZ or go to School there?Do you Northern hemisphere guys just assume that the AB's are partially made up of Pacific Islanders?Have you never heard of Maoris?Everyone says:"Look at all the Islanders in NZ "Who ?Be specific. Plus, Tonga; Fiji & Samoa are pretty close to NZ.There is more reason for people to move from those Islands to NZ, than for them to move to England. They move to NZ for reasons unrelated to Rugby.
C4xR3AL He has 5 brothers who play: Henry, Alesana, Andy, Vavae, Freddy, plus him, that makes 6 rugby players and he his not the biggest one. And there is a seventh one a fa'afafine. So 7 big boys and no girls. Most of been a nightmare feeding this lot.
Manu came here on a 6 month holiday visa and never went back the lad said himself that he owes england rugby alot for making him the player he is now so that's why he chose england over samoa to play international rugby for

well every1 is different, and have their own reasons why. To each his own...i reakon. He's his own man, respect that
I love this guy; laid back,a man of few words who'll rip you in two on the rugby pitch.
@Tehui1974 Yeah same goes for NZ like they might as well call the All Blacks and Islander Team. (Islanders make me love All Blacks)
awesome dude!
alotta power in him.....alike his siblings!!:D
Awesome player all the best Uso
Maa Nonu, Kevin Mealamu, Isaia Toeava, Mils Muliaina, Digby Ioane, Tana Umaga, Jerry Collins, John Afoa, Jerome Kaino, Robbie Fruean, Vito...and many players who opted not to play for Samoa. I respect their choice.

'When the door bell goes'...lmao...no door bells in samoa mate
the interviewer is lucky the interview is with a camera rolling!
@tobysluck by fixed view i didn't mean you aren't open to changing your view. I meant that you seem to view someone as either being english or not english. NEVER expected him to have an accent like that!
ahaha he looks high everytime he gets a interview

this guys an absolute beast, and he's only 20!? Thank god he's an Englishman and he's not gonna be running at us.
I agree, but England gave him and education, (No offence to Somoans) a better lifestyle, a country to live in, so we are not stealing he came here and since we gave him a place to grow up in we have in a way earned the right to have him play for our rugby team, but i do agree with your point.
Thats why he is a youtube journalist/reporter
@Hazardbone when I was in Samoa in a hardware store the shop owner was chinese and he spoke Samoan with a chinese accent!!
@DocSchleeb how?
When i shook his hand, i couldn't believe how big his hands were! lol
@bluckahts Eloquently put sir. Do let me know if you're available for after-dinner speaking engagements.
Manu Decided to play for us instead of Somoa as he grew up here, Also its not just the english, The all blacks have got an Irish man playing for them!
No-one criticizes Scotland; Samoa; France because they don't do this kind of thing half as much as England do. England are known culprits for scouting across the board for players to play for them. Manu's just thinking: I'll give you two seconds to get out of here lol.
i woulda took the money too. lmao true samoans bro!
say it to his face, because he'd tear you apart
Why?
when he says back home(meaning samoa) is he really English??
8 years late but it just shows him as an immigrant?? Besides he spent a longer time living in Samoa during the time of this interview than he did in England
I Tualagi, I play rugby and I can count to 8
Right cause at what 12 years old, whilst moving over to England he predicted that he'd be given the option to join the side and thought it would be a good business opportunity? mate he's a better person than you will ever be.
Manu.. you should punch the interviewer the way you hit Chris Asthon. Good luck playing for england my uso.. any englishman, and samoan for that matter should be supporting him..

@MsStarlite5 I bet you wouldn't call him an idiot on the pitch
@tobysluck ...then I don't see who you are to tell him he is wrong.
Also, what do you mean by 'if samoa had a rich league..?' His family live her and he plays for leicester either way. He could still have played for samoa as well as leicester if he wanted and not affected his earnings.
didnt realise how dull he was in person
This guy is 20 and he could be the missing link England has been looking for in the midfield. I`d put money on it. Comes from a family of rugby players that should have a movie made about them.
Damn straight

why manu plays in england??
You talk about stealing but it was his overall choice, he felt himself that he had spent enough time in the country to deem a place in the england side which we were more than happy to oblige. Why the sudden attack on the england side for 'stealing' poorer countries players, have you seen the NZ side lately?

It's a shame some racists can't come to terms with immigration, even in 2013
@babyhux1 he plays outside centre, not wing. So it's irrelevant
Maybe he just isn't good with doing interviews? I have heard a lot of people short of things to say because they find giving interviews and talking with reporters difficult. He grew up in England and chose to play for the Tigers and England.
