I am an Idaho native. Born in S. Idaho and raised on a large ranch/farm. Raced MX from about the age of eight up to right after HS graduation. Three years ago I ordered a new KTM300XCW but, during Covid it took a bit to get here. I began riding single track all over the lower half of the state and rode this trail last year. Insane and like most all trails here it is beautiful. Last year I had a slow speed crash as I didn’t realize my front tire was losing air after turning around at a huge fallen log blocking the trail. Got back to the creek (normally a creek but, a raging river after three days of rain. Turned to cross the river tire peeled a little off the rim and threw me into the river. Crawled the best I could but, couldn’t get my lower parts out of the water. Was on a trail that looked like it was overgrown for years. It was a Monday and no riders or vehicles anywhere. After about three hours I was resigned to die. Then out of nowhere three guys came by and shortly thereafter life flight was there. Broke my right clavicle, every rib on my right side, punctured right lung, broken ankle in three places and a torn ligament, so much for Tech 7’s protecting my feet. “This trail” is great riding but, if you want a challenge, ride “the Tour of Idaho”! Great riding to you all 🫡🤙🤙🤙
Mannnnnnn... Thats a nightmare scenario for me. The fact that you're here today is incredible. Stay safe out there man! I always carry my Mini In-Reach for those moments.
I did trail maintenance here with the Forest Service back in 1976. Steep country formed of unstable decomposed granite. The only place to sit down was on the trail itself. Lots of drilling and blasting. It was built for horse and mule traffic. Love seeing the terrain and foliage with a hint of fall color.
Thank you for all of your work and for helping the single track riding community. You guys did an incredible job! Hikers, cyclists, horse riders, and everyone else should be thankful for your work.

Awesome video, the trail & cliffs looked killer with the variety of camera angles, especially at that time of year. Looked like a tough, yet fun ride, nice work! 🤘
Thanks! It was a bucket list item to film that trail and I think doing it in October was perfect for filming. Dirt was still nice and grippy too since it had a bit of moisture in it. I couldn't have asked for better conditions!

Thanks for sharing. I’ve ridden trails in California, Colorado, Montana, Pennsylvania & West Virginia about as challenging, many more in Alaska. I didn’t open gates or venture onto private property. Stay off of that seat and focused on the trail ahead of you when riding single track on treacherous terrain. If you must lean for balance always do it toward the wall with your bike tilted towards the drop. Happy trails.
Sitting here afraid to look over the edge of a couch and telling myself to add this track to my bucket list. 😂 Great video. Love that front fender mount and how it shows the vertical views behind you. I'll check out more soon. Thanks for the heads up Backcountry ADV.
Fantastic video, I loved it. I'd never deliberately walk a trail like that, let alone ride it, those cliffs are just too much, but you rode it calmly and decisively. And produced a great video. Well done
Yeah, rode that about 7 years ago when I was a nube rider. "Deadly" wasn't the word I would have used, but it definitely has some legit drop-offs. Sick area.
Thanks! Its a really special area for just about any kind of outdoor sports. I could be standing in the same spot at different times of the year and would run into a dozen different types of sportsmen. LOVE my 501!!
I rode this trail on horseback a few years ago heading into an elk camp. Knowing how many horses come in and out of there makes me even more nervous about attempting this on a motorcycle. Glad you had fun and made it out safe!
Fantastic riding. at 70 years old I think I will stay away from that trail, I am not as agile any more. I still ride the trails, mostly to get to the peaks inorder to setup my Ham radio station to make some DX morse code contacts, and I ride a smaller bike now it is the XT 250, which fit's my slower ability. Good job, you are not out of breath and handle that bike like a champion. Thank you for posting.
Thanks for the support! Thats so cool you have a Ham radio setup! I never learned any of those old school communication methods, but I sorta wish I had. They're the kinds of skills ya want when the world is gettin crazy like it is now.. Its been a while since I've gotten to ride a 250, but they're the perfect size displacement trail bike. It was a big step up for me to go from my 250 to a 500.
Hey, I run CW off of my bike too. I live near this trail and ride the area all of the time. I'd make contact with you if you can set a time and freq. There's some trails like this deeper into Hell's Canyon that get pretty gnarly. I run mostly QRP with a dipole I string up into the trees. I've been riding these trails all my life and I don't think I've ever ridden as quick as this guy did!! We lost a friend once riding the trail.
Epic scenery my guy 🤌 that trail looks amazing, definitely high consequence if you’re not 100% focused. Lol the last thing I be worried about is thinking of a dialogue as I’m trying not to scrape bars and go off a cliff 😅
Thanks for taking me along That was spectacular Beautiful scenery Which I never would have seen if I rode the trail I’d be to focused on the trail and would have missed that beautiful autumn scenery Great video Thanks again for taking me along
You can do it man. For reference he's on a 500 there I typically do it on a 750 gs just because the road getting out to it is 85mph. All what you feel comfortable riding as I said in my previous comment most of this trail is all in your head if you're scared of heights how good are you following a line.
Where did you get those handguards? I just got grey plastics and can't find the grey husky handguards anywhere. Ended up going with the black KTM ones that are much thinner and I don't see them lasting.
Sweet man, i wish i could trust the bark busters to not get a broken wrist even though ive yet to go over the bars. Wouldve paid for themselves in the levers i would've saved by now. @madjack_757
@@dudebro29 Yeah i definitely stressed about that when I first threw them on.. Im pretty glad I did tho cuz my most recent set of projects that are in the editing phase right now are for riding Moab UT. Those bark busters DEFINITELY paid for themselves out on that slickrock lol
Great job with this video. Your use of the two GoPro and drone was done very professionally. Looks like a fun ride. I used to ride dirt bike on similar trails where there is steep drop offs. Now that I’m 69, I mostly ride my e-bike on trails and still have a blast going fast to the point of being dangerous then back off just a bit. The good e-bikes now days cost the same as I paid for my KTM 450 I had 15 years ago. Still worth it though.
I ride single track in Utah and have ridden some trails similar to this in Moab and up in the Wasatch back country. You should try some of the Alpine Loop trails up in American Fork Canyon or any of the trails up Logan Canyon, this one reminds me of the Cottonwood Canyon trail, just like this, no return, full commitment. Probably heard of all of those if you are in the mountain west.
@@madjack_757 Yeah they are plentiful. American Fork is great but crowded on the weekend, the single track are all MTB and dirt bike, during the week you will see hikers and horses but not many. Logan Canyon is awesome too, Richards Hollow is an epic 7 mile single track, I think they are all part of the Shoshone trail system. Check it out !
Great video man! Looks like an amazing trail … I have rode so many epic single track trails in Idaho it never ceases to amaze me how many there are! Keep it up I would love to see more single track videos maybe with some remote camping from the the bike! 👍
Hey man, wowza, thats knarly...but you rode confidently. Skills. Looked more like MTB trail. Hey, got a Q for ya. On looking for trails and adventures on the 500 or say a 650, would you say you'd be good with something like a SUV thats AWD or would you need a 4 x 4 rig say a Land cruiser or something of that nautre?? I wanted ask you cause you said you ride often and go to these places w bike on carrier... so the vehicle is important as well. What say you ?? Is an SUV enough ? With some AT tires ... V8 or V6 enough ? Etc.
Suv is definitely more than enough. The biggest factors are going to be having a trailer that’s not on wheels and is suspended only from the vehicle. Then you’ll have to ensure that trailer hitch is able to handle the downwards weight of a suspended trailer and the bike.
How do you keep your bike from overheating at such low speeds and low/mid rpm? I hear your fan going but it's usually not enough, i always gotta get my 450 goin quick to cool off.
Thanks! I actually loved the ride! Part of my passion for riding comes from two things- a love of being in places that make me feel small and setting myself into a mental state where I am only focussed on the ride and nothing else that was going on in my life at the time. I accomplished both things on that trail especially since I had it all to myself!!
@@madjack_757 In 1978, I scouted out a trail close to Mt St Helens that was open to dirt bikes. I was the trail guild for 3 other riders, all of them were way above me in ability. When we unloaded one of them asked me how he should gear his bike. (he changed the countershaft sprocket) I told him to put the lowest gearing on that he had. He looked at me over the top of his glasses, and I told him, "seriously, you will never get out of second gear today." Off they went. At every trail junction, they would be waiting, and I would point which way to go, and they were off like a shot. We had to cross a fairly deep stream, and one of them tipped over, and he hydro-locked his engine. It took us 30 minutes to get it going, and we were off again. The map showed five 180 degree switchbacks, but in fact there were 33 180 degree switchbacks. These switchbacks were so tight that going up, I would lean back and gas it a little bit and lift the front wheel and swing it down to the next section. Going back, I had to shut off the bike, get off, and drag the front end around. I was riding a Yamaha XT500 at that time. By the way, I caught all of the Hot-Shoes on this section of the trail. Their MX types of bikes were not as good as my thumper. LOL When we made it back to the trucks, all of them said that it had been years since they had had this much fun. Sadly, this trail is now covered with several feet of volcanic ash.
WOW! Thats an incredible story. I used to race bikes from the 70s and 80s. I had a 74' yz125, '79 yz250, and a '89 CR250R and I couldn't imagine doing any riding like that on one of those bikes. Even though you were probably on the heaviest bike, I bet that torque that you had from the super thumper helped so much to climb those mountains!!@@BuilderofRat
Posting this as he has is not going to lead to overuse. A) ATVs & UTVs can’t use it. B) Just as many comments have indicated, most (the few that don’t is not changing this trails situation) dirt-bike riders know and respect their limits. C) Back to “A” is what has led to 50” and wider 4 wheel vehicles overuse and abuse of trails is the real problem! Quite frankly uploads of the Alpine Loop in CO and other such trails is a bigger issue than this video. Not to mention BDRs publicity. Let’s find the bright side; the more “recreationalist” we have in the off-road world the greater number of supporters to keep its access and that we have to fight those who try to take it away……
maybe but i live in Australia and im almost certain i will never go to the alpine trail or this one its just great to see the nature and terrain you have.
Im a back country mountain biker, i was planning to ride this trail but heard reports its not pedal friendly at all, but judging from the video it doesnt look as bad as I thought .Also didnt think it was much of a secret either, its on all the MTB map apps but yes a lot of trails in idaho are unknown unless you just get out and start exploring and I often have days I dont see anyone the whole day
My issue when finding this trail was that each source I researched it had different directions for me to get there. Additionally, online it had been marked as the wrong trail numbers by different sources. It’s very off the beaten path and you gotta go look for it to find it. First day of driving was like 6+ hours and the second day was 3 hours. It’s doable on your mountain bike.
Thanks for responding and reporting back about it being MTB friendly. Watching the video in full now it looks just like riding the Yuba River @@madjack_757
Yeah for sure dude! Honestly the holster is a pretty generic IWB holster with a retention strap that you should be able to find online. Then I clipped it into my vest and supported it with some extra elastic bands that you can find with UpShift Online. It's definitely a homebrew carry setup but it works really well and I've used it for a long time! I carry a Mp Shield Plus (9M) too btw
@@madjack_757 ahhhh, man thank you!! I was wondering, I carry the olive green / black Mp Shield Plus as well, great gun!! I’ll play around with the holster … thanks man and keep up the amazing content!!
@jaredandersen82 that’s a killer setup man! Sometimes I go back and forth on whether I ought to bump up to a heavier duty cartridge while I’m riding out in these remote places but so far it’s been easiest to just use my everyday carry. Thanks for the support man!
I kept fast forward when you are showing the fender camera. Not only is it boring, ( my personal viewpoint), I hate going backwards. Great scenery! Good video! 👍🏻
@@madjack_757 please know that I will continue to watch your videos and enjoy the effort you go to in order for us to have good content. I greatly appreciate the bleep work you do in edit. Saw a video about two years ago where a guy went off a trail that looked exactly like this on I believe, a KTM. Went all the way to the water, which fortunately was deep enough to result in a bath but no injuries. Great quality video, as I recall all the bubbles as his camera sank into the river/creek.
Yeah the guy was on a KTM 300, took a dive into the Crystal River, Devils Punchbowl, near Crested Butte, CO. TH-cam link: th-cam.com/video/zlb8ic6ivcg/w-d-xo.html. Have rode this same trail on my KTM 300 with no issues but took it slow and concentrated - am in my late 60's so I don't go fast anymore! The Devils Punchbowl trail is an attention-getter for only about a mile or so, and certainly not as cajone-shriveling as your Idaho trail Madjack!
Yeah I saw that video! He was so so lucky to be alive.. Hahahaha I'm glad ya liked my video!! Maybe someday I'll make it out to Colorado for some riding!@@terryproffer5815
Ditto! I like hearing the engine sounds, rocks bouncing off the skid plate or handlebars banging the cliff wall (glad none of that happened here though).
It's crazy that you rode this trail by yourself. If I'm not going far from civilization I like riding alone but if I plan on riding sketchy terrain out in the middle of nowhere that's not traveled often then I try to bring a friend.
I can't help but wonder what happens if you ride up on another motorcycle/horseback rider/hiker coming in the opposing direction in one of those extremely narrow drop-off areas? Any mangled wreckage at the bottom of any of those steep drop-offs?
I saw no wreckage but I did hear of airlift stories from other riders before. Usually if there’s any other traffic I’ll lean into the mountain with the motor off and let everyone pass. I was thankful there was nobody else on this trail though..
What bike were you riding? I am surprised that this trail is even open to a motor vehicle or anything besides hiking. I live in North Idaho and am familiar with the national forests. It looks gnarly to say the least
I ride a 2022 FE501S 🤟🏼 I think part of the reason we have that trail open is due to the limited traffic that it sees. How’s the single track up north?
@@madjack_757 I wouldn’t be the one to ask. I don’t ride it hardly at all and mostly stick to forest roads or SxS trails. I’m a geezer and enjoy the view more than the challenge. Nope. If you looked, you’d see it’s a trail for motorcycles, bikes, hikers and horses. I blurred the trail # to prevent droves people finding the trail and ruining it.
I watched a couple of videos a while back of Chuck Sun riding this trail and I think Damon Bradshaw might have been in one of them too with offroadrider15f. At any rate it is hairy to say the least!
awesome views, wowza, is the trail as narrow as it looks? are you going as fast as it seems? are you strapped with a handgun on your chest? thanks for taking us along
Glad ya liked the video! Yup! The trail is super narrow and requires a lot of focus and I don’t think I was going too fast either. I at least thought I was going pretty slow. I always carry a sidearm with me in the backcountry too 🤙🏼🤙🏼
@@danyz250f Lol, that’s near where I live in Southern Utah. We have amazing riding too, but I find that everywhere has its beauty and I just wish I could ride it all!
Interesting you spoke of a 300 2-stroke, I was just wondering how my KTM XC would fair, I still marvel at the low-end grunt it has and how capable it is in just about any situation. Also to be noted, it appeared that there might have been a cave opening at the 15:12 mark. Anyway, great filmwork, it appeared that you were filming from a drone trailing you at times, and obviously you had someone with you to get those "across the ravine" shots (or possibly drone also) - Great work!!!
Thanks so much! All of my film work is done via mounted cameras or a drone! I'll go see if I can see that cave too. I think your bike would have been absolutely perfect. I love my 501 but it is heavy and very touchy on the throttle.. It was a challenge to ride on that trail for sure..
I actually am not sure who originally made it. I am sure that trail riders probably carved it out themselves long ago for horses and hikers. Then over time motorcycles probably discovered it, and then the forest service eventually probably made it an official trail. Thats my guess. For this trail, everyone has right of way over motorcycles! If someone is coming towards you , you have to stop and make way for them. I was fortunate to have the trail entirely to myself!!
@@madjack_757 I would be sooooo nervous that I would make a mistake. I have been on short sections of trails that were like this, but this is 100% sketchy. You did a good job. Especially a 500. I rode a XT600 for many years, I now have a TW200. Plenty big enough for this 76 year old guy.
The margin of error on that trail has to be absolutely tiny.. I’ve used my 500 for virtually everything which has gotten me super comfortable on the bike! Both of those bikes are absolutely awesome!! Those 200s especially are so fun to explore and ride around fire roads with!
@@madjack_757 Yes it is. I am impatiently waiting for the snow to melt. I love riding that bike. Do you carry a Personal Locater Beacon with you when you ride alone? I do.

Hahahaha on the trail I made the joke to carter, "hey you know the trail 5 miles of hell in utah? Well i'm gonna unofficially start calling this 15 miles of hell". This trail was just so insanely sketchy and sometimes it had me questioning if it was a trail at all..
@madjack_757 will do!! ID bdr is closest one to me. I plan on doing it this summer. Itll be my first bdr. I dont think my pan am could handle that trail
@jacobgibson9814 the Idaho bdr is a heck of an adventure my friend. I highly recommend watching the series because a whole lot went wrong for me on that journey.. I hope the films will help you to prep for your adventure!! That single track was definitely one of the gnarliest ones I’ve done for sure!
WOW! Well done. I'm a lifetime Idaho resident, been riding since I was 7 years old in 1977. I can tell you that my T-Dub 2double0 and I are not going on this trail.
The best dual sport tire combo I've found is the shinko 216mx 90/100 cheater front paired with maxxis desert it 110/100 rear. They wear at the same rate and both last forever. Shinko 505 rear works good in slick rock but doesn't last and I can't tell difference in traction elsewhere except the extreme loss of traction at end of life and can't trust it in the rocks at speed due to the soft compound.

Great edit of a beautiful trail would love to ride and fish this area for weeks thanks for sharing btw shredding on the 500
Thanks! Its a really special area for just about any kind of outdoor sports. I could be standing in the same spot at different times of the year and would run into a dozen different types of sportsmen.
LOVE my 501!!
Outstanding riding man, awesome footage as well!!!
Thanks!
@@rameylewis7730 Yes I will put you in my reminder, I would like to do a trail contact with you .
Epic scenery my guy 🤌 that trail looks amazing, definitely high consequence if you’re not 100% focused. Lol the last thing I be worried about is thinking of a dialogue as I’m trying not to scrape bars and go off a cliff 😅
Dude it was a challenge to keep some sort of conversation going at times lol 😂
Thanks for taking me along
That was spectacular
Beautiful scenery
Which I never would have seen if I rode the trail
I’d be to focused on the trail and would have missed that beautiful autumn scenery
Great video
Thanks again for taking me along
I’m so glad you lived the video!! I’m glad I was able to share the experience 🤙🏼
Dang, I guess I won't be riding the XR650L on that trail. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Small bike trail for sure.
You can do it man. For reference he's on a 500 there I typically do it on a 750 gs just because the road getting out to it is 85mph. All what you feel comfortable riding as I said in my previous comment most of this trail is all in your head if you're scared of heights how good are you following a line.
Most underrated state imo
Eh most of it is high desert or corn fields. All the cool stuff is in WA
Where did you get those handguards? I just got grey plastics and can't find the grey husky handguards anywhere. Ended up going with the black KTM ones that are much thinner and I don't see them lasting.
They came stock with the bike, but now I have the sturdier bark busters!
Also the bike is a 501 🤟🏼
Sweet man, i wish i could trust the bark busters to not get a broken wrist even though ive yet to go over the bars.

I tried and tried but no luck. Anyway I like what Ur doing .
Thanks! It blows my mind how much those e-bikes cost now.. I've ridden a few now though and I'll admit they'e pretty fun
Looks amazing, thanks for sharing.
I can't count the times I was holding my breath.
i ride at silver all year snowboarding in the winter, ive heard plenty about this trail from my buddies. stoked to see it since i havent been.
You, sir, have earned a follower! And you deserve millions more.
Thanks so much for the support!!
Curious? I'm in Oregon and most all trails are designated for non-motorized use. Is Idaho much more lax about motorized travel on trails?
Idaho is alot more relaxed about motorized use. Though, we fight tooth and nail to keep trails open.
when did you ride this? Is it dry already this time of year? Local to Idaho..
I rode this in October. I wish it were this dry already!!! The best bet we have this time of year is the Owyhees :/
Are all those trails in Utah? I have been planning to do some filming/riding trips down there and am making a bucket list of places to hit!
How long have you been riding that particular bike, definitely need to be one with the bike, love a video that can raise my heartbeat...!! Great job
Had this bike for a little over a year now! I agree you definitely need to be familiar with your equipment. Glad ya liked the video!
You got some big ones taking a 501 up there I felt like my 350 was too big for that trail. lol nice job
Thanks! Hahahaha my 501 is my main bike so I’ve learned to take it everywhere!
Great video man! Looks like an amazing trail … I have rode so many epic single track trails in Idaho it never ceases to amaze me how many there are! Keep it up I would love to see more single track videos maybe with some remote camping from the the bike! 👍

Hey MadJack, do you know the history behind the trail?? I’m thinking possibly an old prospecting trail.
I believe it was used for horseback and pack animals to bring supplies to the ranch deep in that valley!
Why was the trail usage sign fogged out?
To keep the internet from discovering the trail number and cause overuse of the trail
I didn`t think trail numbers were on those signs; just who could and couldn1t use the trail.@@madjack_757
Don’t worry about talking man. This is gnarly. Safety and concentration first.
How do you keep your bike from overheating at such low speeds and low/mid rpm? I hear your fan going but it's usually not enough, i always gotta get my 450 goin quick to cool off.
Sometimes I just stop for a short bit or I’ll try to pick up the pace a little bit. I also switched over to engine ice coolant which helped a bit 🤟🏼

What settings are you using on your chin mounted GoPro? Video looks awesome.
A Gopro11 Creator edition set up 4K | 60 | Super view (16mm) on highest video quality!
Awesome video, thanks for posting it. Did you actually enjoy the ride? That looks terrifying to me.
He looked at me over the top of his glasses, and I told him, "seriously, you will never get out of second gear today."
Off they went.
LOL
When we made it back to the trucks, all of them said that it had been years since they had had this much fun.
@@madjack_757 Yea, I had no trouble anywhere, but those guys were just so fast. EXCEPT on the switchbacks. LOL I had a lot of bottom end for sure.
Ya no shit where's it at
maybe but i live in Australia and im almost certain i will never go to the alpine trail or this one its just great to see the nature and terrain you have.
@@jasonaldrich4780South Fork Salmon River trail
U mentioned a 300 2 stroke would that have better low end?
Its a way better bike to lug it in low speeds
How long is the trail (curious how long a person can be puckered up :) )
I think its probably about 2-3 miles in and the same going out. Its actually remarkably short!
I wonder if a Rokon would be a better option on this trail since it is a two-wheel drive inline vertical motorcycle
I’ve seen a few of those before! They’re super low to the ground too. Would probably be easy to ride that trail with one!
Loving the gun mount on your chest strap … can you shoot me any details of what it is and how you secured it for riding??

Saw a video about two years ago where a guy went off a trail that looked exactly like this on I believe, a KTM. Went all the way to the water, which fortunately was deep enough to result in a bath but no injuries. Great quality video, as I recall all the bubbles as his camera sank into the river/creek.
I think I saw this video of the guy from Colorado.. he was crazy lucky to have walked outta there.

Ditto! I like hearing the engine sounds, rocks bouncing off the skid plate or handlebars banging the cliff wall (glad none of that happened here though).
at least it wasn’t a splash or a rock slide…
That is a trail to beat all trails .... wow. Nice👌video....

Why did you blurr the initial trail signage? Is it because it says "No OHV's"?
Nope. If you looked, you’d see it’s a trail for motorcycles, bikes, hikers and horses. I blurred the trail # to prevent droves people finding the trail and ruining it.
While on the trail did you ever get out of 1st gear?
😂😂 I think I spent most my time in 2nd and 3rd cuz 1st gear was way too jumpy for my tastes on that trail!

@madjack_757 Thanks! And again, great work and thank you for keeping these trails "a best kept secret", so as not to see them become over-run.
@madjack_757 I can relate to "heavy", I sold my XR650 to acquire the KTM, all the grunt, half the weight ; )

who made that amazing single track, and what would you do if someone coming against you? great vid, though!.
