  • This spicy powder called as Idli Milagai Podi ,also referred to as Gunpowder is a traditional accompaniment for Idlis and Dosas. The powdered blend of Chillies and Spices can be stored for months and used when required.
    Ingredients
    Channa Dal 1/4 Cup
    Urad Dal 1/4 Cup
    Dry Red Chillies 10
    Desiccated Coconut Powder 1/4 Cup
    Sesame seeds 1/4 Cup
    Hing
    Curry leaves
    Salt
    Oil 1 Tbsp
    Mustard Seeds 1 Tsp

    Gita mam, I tried this today and henceforth I won't buy from outside. It came really good. I just added a bit tamarind and ground the curry leaves with the chutney else my hubby and son take it off. I want them to eat it for health benefits.

    I have another recipe for chutney pudi. This looks good! How long can you keep it? My pudi keeps for a month, but doesn't have coconut.

    Nice recipe. Can you suggest the weight of chilies to be used instead of numbers and the weight of dals instead of a cup measure? I wish to make one cup measure of each item so how much chilies I need to put for this quantity. And which type of chilies to be used. Can I use chily powder instead of chilies, if yes then powder also needs to be dry roasted?

      Yes, sure .. I have used Guntur spicy red chillies and have given in number.. .. it will not taste good with chilli powder

      Fresh coconut will not have a lon shelf life. You can omit coconut too. No problem

      Only channa dal is used in the traditional version

      No need of rice for this This powder can last three months outside

      Yes you can add curry leaves. But better not to grind mustard seeds

      Generally this is used only as side dish or as pods idli or dosa. When short of time you can add to curd ad make a raita
