Very good simple explanation on how gearbox works. Wish there was such TH-cam video many many years ago when I was faced with AT gearbox issues (not a VW but a different European brand using the AL4 autogearbox). The AT gear oil getting too hot and going into "safe" mode, which will not change gear anymore, until it cool down. (Later, adding an external gear oil cooler solved that problem). So, just to add a little comment: 1) Always use the car manufacturer recommended AT gear oil. 2) As for the earlier VW gear issue, which was quite widespread, even in China (I search the Internet a long time to find that out). After some time, VW managed to find out and announced that in certain hot weather places, the synthetic gear oil used that time, somehow affected the sensor (sort of melting out some rubber/plastic stuff), resulting in unable to monitor the oil temp & causing the gear box getting too hot and jammed. Simple solution, they use a different gear oil (mineral) and recalled their cars to check/replace the gear oil and the sensor. After that, I had 2 VWs, for 10 & 7 yrs, without any gear issues. I sold the 10yr Cross Touran to go for the new Tiguan Allspace. Yes Sir, Uncle YS, we all love VW, don't we? Cheers.

Or use breaks at all times when decelerating, got confused since there is always stress between brakes and clutch. Also in a traffic when you keep a distance and move is it okay to just roll over without stepping foot on acceleration? TIA for your guidance on this

Thank you YS. Great knowledge. I have one question. I have the habit of changing the gear from D to S especially when I'm overtaking in the highway. Then back from S to D once im done overtaking. Will this damage the gear?
No it wont: in fact it gives you more power to overtake safely. Fuel consumption suffers a bit though, but in trunk roads it cuts down overtaking time, which is safer.

Hi uncle! Thumbs up on the DSG explanation video! How about a video detailing the various real-life maintenance costs for the upkeep of a DSG gearbox/ VW cars in general? Since you've got quite a few VWs there, there's no one more qualified to give us these insights!
Hi. Really enjoyed your video. Do you have any other tips for going up the genting road and also coming down, without using manual and paddle shifter. I am driving a 2019 1.0 VW polo. Thank you.
If you don't then the gearbox thinks you want to go up to 5, and when you shift down, it will get confused, and will take a longer time. If you want to shift down, it is usually under braking, say for a corner, and that would be okay. If you need to shift down for overtaking, just lift off momentarily, shift down, and go.
Just switched from automatic transmission Toyota to a DSG Tiguan 2021. Confused about DSG and inching forward in traffic jams. When i am stopped in traffic jams, my foot is on the brake. When the car in front if me moves, should i be A) Lifting off my foot fully from the brake, letting the car move forward by itself? And then braking again when i'm close to the car in front. Or B) Lifting off my foot fully from brake and then stepping lightly on the accelerator to move car forward, then braking when i'm close to the car in front. I'm used to driving style A having come from an AT toyota.
Nice. Always wanted to get a MK5 Polo GTi. How has the twin charged engine been Uncle Khong? Any major issues? and what to especially look out for given that its a more sophisticated engine to the other 1.4 engines. Would love to hear your experience!
Hi Uncle YS, is there noticeable improvements in the DQ381 vs the DQ250 in terms of immediate take off from standstill, low speed creep, smoothness in gear shifts (up and down), any jerks in traffic driving, etc?
Hello Mr. Khong. Great video. Just wondering if it's okay during start stop heavy traffic I changed to manual mode? Like I manually change to 1st gear when it moves a little then when it stops I manually change to Neutral.
My oldest BW is 12 years old, but it only has 90k km on it. Should be okay, but get it checked by a good mechanic first. Do a test drive and see if it feels good. I think 120k should be okay - that is about 5 to 6 years normal usage so should be good.
Uncle YS. Say i am crusing on the highway at a comfortable speed then i wish to attain better FC and i release my accelerator for it to cruise along under speed drops and i tap accelerator again and repeat this. Is this ok for the dsg gearbox? Thanks..
Some of the newer DSGs have a 'Coasting' function that disengages the transmission and saves fuel when you lift off. Lifting off to save fuel works better if you have a reasonable downhill gradient, or else your speed drop may be too quick. Most car systems now cut off the fuel when you lift off, esp on eco settings. If road is flat, it is better to just ise a light throttle to maintain a speed. If you want to do lift off on level ground, keep the variance to about 10 kmh or else it would be very irritating to others, including other cars sharing the lane and also your passengers..
Hi uncle, does a 1.2 Tsi Polo DSG , dry clutch, is there oil that needs to be changed? If not, what kind of preventive maintenance can be done for the gear box? Thanks In advance for your knowledge and explanation on the video too
There is oil in the DSG, but not for the clutch pack. There is no maintenance for the clutch by the owner. Please follow what we say in our video on the usage. I have a 10 year old Golf TSi running the dry clutch, and it is still as good as new.
VW DSG (in the Tiguan MK2) is great for fast and sporty driving but not so good when crawling in a traffic jam. Can be rather jerky and unpleasant in such situations.
But my issue is when you're pulling out of a slope from parking mode. It doesn't give you auto hill descent or ascent control. As you move your foot from the brake to the accelerator, it creeps forward/backwards depending on the slope and that it very scary. So you have to continuously use auto brake switch.
Uncle, since you have experiences in many VW cars before, do you mind sharing on average lifespan of the VW wet and dry clutches? I noticed most owners with dry clutches DSG gave their feedback of pre-mature wear at around 2 to 3 years. I owned a Passat B8 HL with 6-speed DSG with wet clutches, and I do almost 90% of KL city drive with traffic jam. My car is creeping in traffic jam most of the time, and I wonder how long my DSG clutches will last? Thank you.
Is it correct if traffic is crawling at ~10kmh, I'll just keep one car distance with the car in front and lightly tap throttle to keep up and only press the brake when traffic stops? Is the clutch fully engaged at 10kmh and not slipping? Thanks
Correct. Clutch engagement or disengagement is determined by the first few mm of play in the brake pedal - your foot tells the car system what is your intention.
Mr Khong, I just bought myself a proton x70, it's transmission happens to be a DCT wet clutch type. You mentioned in your narration that in the event of the car in a traffic jam, one mustn't inch the car along with the slow moving vehicles in front, and doing so would shorten the life of the clutches. However, there are times approaching traffic lights juction, I would be forced to slow down the car by light stepping the brake pedal over a distance until it comes to a complete stop. Would you also call this inching the car along? And will this be bad for the clutches? Any other way of doing this better?
Hi Uncle Khong, can you help me understand why did the 6 speed DSG dropped gears from 3rd to 2nd with roughness? Is there a way to minimise this by driving habbits or is it time to get a new clutch?
Can you explain exactly what you mean? Is it you are dropping gear with the paddle shift or is it going down by itself. Are you in D or in M mode, what speed, when does it happen, when does it not. It is not clear to me from your description, so I need as much information as possible. Were you braking or accelerating? And exactly what do you mean by roughness.
Hi Vincent, drive it slowly in D. If it bites quickly and solidly, it is ok. If it vibrates a little, it may mean clutch is weak. Usually the gearbox is ok, only the clutch. Clutch is replaceable, around rm3.5k. My R is 6 years old going into 7th year, still very good, no problem. My TSi is 11 years old, clutch replaced in year 3 under warranty, still good, no problem.
Hi uncle. I heard from someone to avoid damaging the dq200 dsg ( dry clutch ) when in a jam is to manually put the gear at Gear 1 and roll it when in jam. Instead of putting it in D and let it stall or roll with the jam. Is it?
Not true. The idea is to minimise the rolling in a jam. Please watch our video on how to use the DSG. Cos I don't want to write down in words what I said in the video.
Hi Mr Khong, I am a fan of your genting drive videos and back in around 2010 I drove my friend's Golf GTI for about a month and yes DSG is fantastic but after a few years the GTI gave him lots of problems from engine to gearbox. So till today I still advoid buying DCT cars. I agree with your video that the clutch works like a manual and we all know manual clutches will wear and need replacement so isnt it the same for DCT clutches? Wouldn't it need replacement? Clutch replacement for DCT is a more complex and expensive procedure. As mentioned in your video, the dry DSG have overheating prob on bigger or higher performance car so wet DSG is used. From what I understand, wet DSG have the issues of clutch dust/flakes from wear being circulated in the transmission oil and logically that is not a good thing. Let me know if I am wrong cos if DCT have solved these issues then I will gladly get a DCT car next!
Some people confuse maintenance with repair. Yes, clutches need replacement: so if a clutch needs replacement, it is not a problem. Even jet engines need to be overhauled, so does that mean it is problematic? Automatics also have bands and clutches internally and they wear out. Then the gearbox just slips a lot more or it just dies. While they are slipping, most people don't even realise it, and think it's the engine. Anything that moves needs to be maintained. I have a 10 year old TSi with a dry clutch : it is still as good as new. I also have a 5 yr old Golf R with a wet clutch. It is still going strong. As for the transmission fluid, just change it every 30 k km. It's the same with engine oil - metal particles from wear and tear, carbon from the fuel, adulteration from unburnt petrol, and even overnight condensation pollute the oil: that is why you change; it is maintenance, not a problem.
Strongly argee with Uncle YS. Many people confuse the repair and maintenance. People thinking of replace of clutch is considered major repair but in fact it is a minor replacement job (but need skill worker to complete). And the cost of clutch replacement in VW Malaysia SC is quoted RM 4k and external workshop quoted using genuine part from Germany is half price. After replace of new clutch the transmission feel like relived. But again many VW users especially wet clutch did not replace clutch even after 7 years of usage. I personally do change of transmission fluid in every 30k km to maintain it best performance and protection. Whereas for AT it is more reliable however when problem arise it always need major repair. And in many cases the gearbox can't be repaired the owner will need to buy a used or recond unit without guarantee of problem free and lifespan. Why not buying a new on? A new one cost tens of thousands. I got a friend who operate a gearbox repair specialist shop in Kelana Jaya.
Hi Uncle Khong, what do you think of the Golf R mk7? I am considering to get a used unit but very concern on the reliability of a VW brand. I've used to owned a 2010 Polo 1.2 tsi and that car has given me lots of problem after driving it for about 3 months. If I am not mistaken the service advisor at that time mentioned its due to some mechatronic / gearbox issue which causes the car engine to shutdown once it goes above 40kmh. They had even did the necessary replacement and the problem still persist. Since then the car has been in and out of the workshop once every 2-3 months. Sold the car not too long after. I believe more and more customers are experiencing a similar / other issues to a point that there is a dedicated Facebook community to share their DSG defects haha.. Nevertheless, I would like to once again revisit this brand as I heard many good reviews on the Golf R. This is also the only performance car which fits my criteria and budget. Hope to hear some of your inputs. Thanks in advance!
As long as your foot is firmly on the brakes, it is just as good. But if you are in the Butterworth area with the 15 minute traffic lights you can even go down for a coffee and come back ( just joking(.
Hi Uncle Kong, is a used V Touran still worth to own now? What about the rest of the used V model which is worth owning with a low maintenance. Please suggest a few used model for an every day driving. Scirocco?
A Touran and Scirocco are at two extremes. Hard for me to advise if your options are so diverse. Those cars with the 1.4 engine would be quite cheap to maintain. Consider the Polo or Vento TSi. Great car.
The Jetta, Cross Touran and the 1.4 Scirocco basically have the same drive train as the Golf TSi. I have the MK6 Golf TSi with the same drive train, still running fine after 10 years.

Hi uncle ys, thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have a question, how much hp and torque the 7speed dry clutch able to handle? Those people tuning for stage 2. Does it make the gearbox caput because higher hp and torque? Thank you for reading my question.
Not quite sure, as each maker has their own specs. I heard it can take up to 300Nm, but cannot verify it. I fail to understand why people would spend so much to do the 1.4 engine up to Stage whatever, when the GTI is right there.
I always went into neutral at the traffic light from a fear of someone hitting me from behind and damaging my transmission while in drive. Now I know not to do that

Good input. Thank you. Yes, the new boxes are getting quite good.
Very good lesson uncle 😎
And don't forget the revmatching/autoblipping in manual mode when you downshift 😍, so addicting especially when you have the catless downpipe 😅 it's sounds like you drove a GT3RS hahaha
Sir, I learned a lot from you today. Thank you!
Thank you uncle. But I still worry to drive in the heavy traffic with DSG :D
Sir, how do you cope up in a down hill with a dct transmission? Also when you mean decelerating to lift off and let car decelerate on its own? Or use breaks at all times when decelerating, got confused since there is always stress between brakes and clutch. Also in a traffic when you keep a distance and move is it okay to just roll over without stepping foot on acceleration? TIA for your guidance on this
Treat it like any transmission as long as you are moving. Don't worry about it t9o much. Only heed what I say in the video under those circumstances
Great tutorial Uncle YS. I will try to better take care of my Gen 7 Golf GTI from now and hope it is not too late. I like the Karmann Ghia best from your collection! It would be cool to get to see the real car one day....

Thanks Uncle Khong for sharing before i get 1 VW SRC

Thank you YS. Great knowledge. I have one question. I have the habit of changing the gear from D to S especially when I'm overtaking in the highway. Then back from S to D once im done overtaking. Will this damage the gear?
No it wont: in fact it gives you more power to overtake safely. Fuel consumption suffers a bit though, but in trunk roads it cuts down overtaking time, which is safer.
hi sir , im planing to buy a volkswagen passat B7 1.8L tsi second-hand for ard 40k myr . Do you have any adivice and tips on checking the car and lookout for in testing the car .... Pls guide me...
You have to check any used car for mechanical issues and also if it has had accidents before, and also if the mileage is high, or real.
Great video Mr Khong ! In a heavy traffic would it be better to engage manual ?
Keep it in auto, and if you have auto hold, use it.

How ab those DSG with coast function? Wouldn’t it keep the clutches engagement even busier? 😧
No, it disengages the gears

Hi uncle! Thumbs up on the DSG explanation video!
How about a video detailing the various real-life maintenance costs for the upkeep of a DSG gearbox/ VW cars in general? Since you've got quite a few VWs there, there's no one more qualified to give us these insights!
I really have no idea because so far I have spent nothing on the DSGs for the 4 cars.

Just bought VW JETTA and was worried about DSG Gearbox. Hope it should be all right.

Very nice instruction video, thanks for the information
Hi. Really enjoyed your video. Do you have any other tips for going up the genting road and also coming down, without using manual and paddle shifter. I am driving a 2019 1.0 VW polo. Thank you.
Sure, just drive it like any other automatic car.
Thank you, great work.
Good video, very informative and can learnt new knowledge!
Glad it was helpful!
Can you also do a similar video for CVT? And lastly your take on conventional slushbox automatic transmission vs DCT vs CVT.
I'm also made to understand that Nissan, Subaru and Toyota are using different CVT tech. Is that true?
Not too sure about that. Will need to do some research.
Uncle for downshifting from gear 4 to gear 3 must I remove my foot from accelerator if I wanna accelerate to gain power....
If you don't then the gearbox thinks you want to go up to 5, and when you shift down, it will get confused, and will take a longer time. If you want to shift down, it is usually under braking, say for a corner, and that would be okay. If you need to shift down for overtaking, just lift off momentarily, shift down, and go.
very nice informative video! can uncle talk abt how to tk care tourqe converter gearbox?
thank you i think i learned something new
Just switched from automatic transmission Toyota to a DSG Tiguan 2021.
Confused about DSG and inching forward in traffic jams. When i am stopped in traffic jams, my foot is on the brake. When the car in front if me moves, should i be
A) Lifting off my foot fully from the brake, letting the car move forward by itself? And then braking again when i'm close to the car in front.
Or B) Lifting off my foot fully from brake and then stepping lightly on the accelerator to move car forward, then braking when i'm close to the car in front.
I'm used to driving style A having come from an AT toyota.
B is what you need to do. If you have autohold, use that. It helps. Then it would be B.
Nice. Always wanted to get a MK5 Polo GTi. How has the twin charged engine been Uncle Khong? Any major issues? and what to especially look out for given that its a more sophisticated engine to the other 1.4 engines. Would love to hear your experience!
I have 3 cars with the twin charged 1.4 engine. One is in the Polo GTi. So far no issues.

Hi Uncle YS, is there noticeable improvements in the DQ381 vs the DQ250 in terms of immediate take off from standstill, low speed creep, smoothness in gear shifts (up and down), any jerks in traffic driving, etc?
Transmission development is always ongoing, and the newer boxes are always better.
@@YSKhongDriving Thanks, definitely make sense, but was hoping you can share more based on your vast experience in driving various DSGs. :)
Hello Mr. Khong. Great video. Just wondering if it's okay during start stop heavy traffic I changed to manual mode? Like I manually change to 1st gear when it moves a little then when it stops I manually change to Neutral.
Same effect is achieved by stepping on brake pedal firmly when stopped. That disengaged the gear too.
Hi Uncle YS, so is it ok to drop gear by using engine braking when going downhill in my VW?
Btw first time user of a VW
Yes it is okay to drop gear.
Uncle Khong, just asking out of curiosity. Would it be better if we use manual shift mode during traffic jam?
Manual or auto, it is the same. Try not to do inching forward.
@@YSKhongDrivingis it only in DCT? how bout in AT, should we try not to do inching forward too?
@@YSKhongDriving what is inching forward ?
What about long term reliability? I'm thinking of buying a Volkswagen transport with 4matic and DSG transmission it has 120.000 kilometers
@@YSKhongDriving Thanks a lot Uncle! The guide in there is really useful for DSG users like me!
uncle YS, im new to dsg, does it have strong engine braking when we downshift? does dsg has auto blipper technology equip? thx
There is no engine braking from DSG, that is why brakes have to be bigger. Auto blip is a feature added in, not restricted to DSG.
VW DSG (in the Tiguan MK2) is great for fast and sporty driving but not so good when crawling in a traffic jam. Can be rather jerky and unpleasant in such situations.
yeah i feel ya .. sport mode for that i guess
But my issue is when you're pulling out of a slope from parking mode. It doesn't give you auto hill descent or ascent control. As you move your foot from the brake to the accelerator, it creeps forward/backwards depending on the slope and that it very scary. So you have to continuously use auto brake switch.
Depending on the year model, some of them have Hill Start Assist that stops the car from rolling backack for about 1.5 to 2 seconds.
@@YSKhongDriving I have a 2021 Touareg 2021 R-Line. Should that have this feature? How do I check?
Uncle, since you have experiences in many VW cars before, do you mind sharing on average lifespan of the VW wet and dry clutches? I noticed most owners with dry clutches DSG gave their feedback of pre-mature wear at around 2 to 3 years. I owned a Passat B8 HL with 6-speed DSG with wet clutches, and I do almost 90% of KL city drive with traffic jam. My car is creeping in traffic jam most of the time, and I wonder how long my DSG clutches will last? Thank you.
My Golf R has a 6 speed wet clutch and it has been 5 years without any problems.
@@YSKhongDriving Thanks. Keep up the good work.
Mr Khong,
I just bought myself a proton x70, it's transmission happens to be a DCT wet clutch type.
That would be normal. I Ching is when you are in a jam and you let the car inch forward.
@@YSKhongDriving tqvm!
Well explained uncle khong 👍
Thanks! 😃
Planing on getting the 1.2 tsi polo 2013 any feedback for this car? Worth buying?
Great car. My daughter has one 2015 model.
Uncle YS I’m buying a used VW with DSG. How to check if the gbox still good? Any reliable workshop technician to recommend ?
Hi Vincent, drive it slowly in D. If it bites quickly and solidly, it is ok. If it vibrates a little, it may mean clutch is weak. Usually the gearbox is ok, only the clutch. Clutch is replaceable, around rm3.5k.
My R is 6 years old going into 7th year, still very good, no problem. My TSi is 11 years old, clutch replaced in year 3 under warranty, still good, no problem.
@@YSKhongDriving noted uncle YS. Will go for it
@@YSKhongDriving appreciate your explanation can you send the link for that video you said, tq in advance
@@aeroline11 How about CVT? IMO, it's more unreliable and problematic than DSG & torque converter
I have the Golf 7 R sitting in my porch. Had it for 5 years already.
My 1.2 Polo tsi is a year newer than your (2011) but the car & DSG gearbox has been so far so good. Bought new, still driving it today.

Is it better to put a dsg in neutral with handbrakes up while in a long waiting traffic light to prolong the life?
As long as your foot is firmly on the brakes, it is just as good. But if you are in the Butterworth area with the 15 minute traffic lights you can even go down for a coffee and come back ( just joking(.
Hi Uncle Kong, is a used V Touran still worth to own now? What about the rest of the used V model which is worth
owning with a low maintenance. Please suggest a few used model for an every day driving. Scirocco?
A Touran and Scirocco are at two extremes. Hard for me to advise if your options are so diverse. Those cars with the 1.4 engine would be quite cheap to maintain. Consider the Polo or Vento TSi. Great car.
@@YSKhongDriving Perhaps Jetta is a good one with not so problematic Gearbox?
The Jetta, Cross Touran and the 1.4 Scirocco basically have the same drive train as the Golf TSi. I have the MK6 Golf TSi with the same drive train, still running fine after 10 years.
The Jetta handles very well - extremely well balanced.
