News flash - dsgs with wet clutches also use hydraulic pressure to apply the clutches and shift gears. Modern ATs also shift extremely fast and realize complete lockup of the engine and transmission together. Also not mentioned that VW dsgs integrate the front diff with trans which shares the same fluid with gears and 2 clutches. Audi actually has clutches and hydraulic controls in a separate chamber while the front and center diffs plus gears are in their own separate compartment with different fluid.
Correct - the DL501 utilizes a divorced lubrication system, unlike the other VW/Audi transverse transaxles that share fluid for clutches, gear stacks, and differential. You're also on point with the late model ZF 8-speed being much better than older traditional automatics, so while what we're discussing here is more or less true, there is less of a performance gap than there was in years past.

@Pipa Obala It's not too bad around the city for me, but I agree the clutch engagement is a bit clunky at times, particularly when parked downhill and you have to reverse, and vice versa. First gear likes to diddle sometimes, too.
love the video! Also I have a stage 1+ 2017 Gli (dsg) I took it to the dealership to get an alignment and while I was waiting I asked to drive a new gti (dsg) 2019. I didn't like the car either it just doesn't snap gears like the dsg in my car. I told that to the dealership guy and he thought I was crazy lol thank you for proving my point.
Great explanation, lots of really good information here. I like the comparison you made between the DQ250 and the DQ381. I’ve driven several 250s but when I bought my GTI with the 381, I was pretty disappointed by the shifting. I was expecting it to shift like the older ones, but with the added benefit of that 7th gear. Like you said, it was “slippy” and just didn’t have the crisp, fast shifts of the 250. It also seemed like the clutch engagement when taking off from a stop wasn’t as sharp. However, it did seem like the faster/harder I drove the car, the shifting would improve, especially in sport mode. I was just wondering if it was actually designed to work that way, or if it’s just a figment of my imagination. Can you shed any light on that? I no longer own that car, I now have a Mk6 GLI with a 6-speed manual. As much as I love driving manuals, I still miss the way a DSG drives. My wife’s Macan does have the PDK, so I suppose I can get behind the wheel of that whenever I need my “DSG fix” 😆
Did you ever tune your DQ381, I know he said tuning helps but still doesn't feel like a DQ250 but I'm wondering if you did it and what the change was like for you.
Excellent video, really well explained. I would also like to thank you all at FCP Euro for helping me out, Audi in the UK and Germany were out of stock of a cylinder head bolt for some warranty work on my C7 RS6, you guys had stock and sent it to me in a few days, so thank you very much for helping me. FCP Euro is a really good option, if you can’t get the part in Europe, it’s worth trying them as the shipping cost was very reasonable.
Excellent presentation! Been trying to find such to explain why we are impressed with our 2019 Audi RS 3 transmission. This is the presentation that all can understand!
Watched again today, to help explain the transmission to a friend who considering buying an Audi RS 3 as warm weather arrives and some Audi RS 3's may actually be available this year. Again, a great presentation!
Great presentation and detail. I believe my DMF is starting to go out and one of the tell-tale signs I'm experiencing, and have read is a sign, is a clickety clack at idle that can be heard in the engine area. It's a little inconsistent, as the rhythm changes a bit. Do you agree this is related to a DMF going bad? Not gonna try this repair myself. It will be going somewhere for service. Everything else I've done myself to this point.
This has been extremely informative from the very beginning to the end of the video. And I don’t hope to get a response, but I have a question. I have a 2009 Volkswagen GTI with 130,000 miles on it automatic obviously DSG transmission. This is how I ended up watching this video. Runs and drives very well and I love it. There is one issue, however Whenever I go from drive to reverse gear or from parked to reverse gear, it makes this clunking noise as if it’s trying to get into a gear several times,, but then completely disengages I have been driving a car like this for two years now so strictly speaking it doesn’t interfere with general use and whenever transmission fails to get into a reverse gear once in a while I just turned off and turn the car back on and it reverses just fine At first, I was told that it alignment issue so I went ahead and have her replaced the transmission and engine mounts I also did a transmission, flush gearbox service, and none of it helped After watching this video, I’m thinking that I may need to replace the flywheel, but also I’m wondering if it’s worth trying to first reset the Metronic unit as well as the ECU because flywheel replacement is a very expensive procedure for me as I am a student If you have any advice, it would be greatly appreciated. I am just wanting to hear what you guys think.
I track my 2015 S3, and I get a rough shift every once in a while. I figured it was something I was doing. Now I'm 100% sure, it's me. If I come into a corner and brake hard down shift, it's all good. If I come into a corner, brake hard down shift feather the gas and try try and down shift before another corner it's not happy. I need to get better at making sure the tcu knows what gear I want next. Also I was surprised to hear the dsg really holds up well on the track. I change my dsg fluid every 2 years with about 6 tracks days and only 12k miles. It sounds like it might be overkill. I'm pushing about 400 whp with 90k miles on her, so I want to keep the car running strong. Great video
Hands down that is got to be the best explanation of DSG boxes now this is got me thinking perhaps I should buy one a 2020 21 onwards I'm presuming here in the UK it would be a 7-speed DSG well done boss you explained it and take away some of my fears don't get the business about farts

I've got a B8 S4 reverse gear vibe issue 'Oh it's looking like the gearbox it'll be around £1950'.. on a maybe? I don't think so, I'll update very soon, investigations are ongoing. Keep it up Nathan and FCP! What I like about Nathan's explanations is he talks normal speed, doesn't drawl all over or slow down, if you're quick thinking he's perfect.. if not then you may need to pause a few times but stay with it, I'd love to meet him but we're a few thousand miles apart. OH the DSG fart, its almost embarrassing, I'm 64 and don't need a fartbox!

I think the main thing you didn't point on is that the transmission itself isn't repairable in a sense. There are a few shops who have the ability or spec to replace internal components. Also the dq250 has 2 filters one internal non serviceable and one cartridge. The dq250 changed with the mk7 no longer is considered a 02E, mk7 use a 0D9 dq250, biggest difference I've notice when fully disassemble is that the temp sensor in the 02e is next to the mech unit. 0D9 is internally in the mech unit.
i bought a 2014 passat TDI last year because it was the cheapest car i could find in my area with under 90,000 miles. I didn’t know much at the time, but after a year of ownership it’s been interesting learning about the TDI and its cult following, and of course just now finding out my DSG is some performance transmission 😂 I love the car, best 10 grand I’ve ever spent

I don't know if you have but you should do a video on how to use Manuel mode in a dsg and the differences between them, maybe what to look out for and don't do etc.
2018 Alltrack SE owner here. The only downside I have with mine is the hesitation while the DSG engages from a stop. Couple it with with the turbo lag, and the off the line acceleration suffers.
Hi there. It was so so informative and thank you for that. I have just purchased a 2017 Alltrack and facing the same kind of issue when you start off with the car, it pauses for a second and shoots up with a clinch. VW suggested DSG service and after doing that, it drove perfectly fine for a few days but now it’s doing the same thing but intermittently. I’m so worried as I have no warranties on the car and also don’t wanna screw up anything else by ignoring this. You mentioned in your video about one of the possible cause as flywheel and that you gonna talk about the other causes after which you forgot I believe. I would really appreciate the help here. Thanks a lot bro

Thanks for this eccellent info on the dsg. You briefly touched on dual mass flywheel problems which sounds like what I am experiencing in my audi a3 1.8 tsfi. Another vid around diagnosis of this problem would be helpful to me
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. The dual-mass flywheel issue is a tough one to diagnose, often times you can go by mileage. On a TDI car they tend to live a harder life so will need service at a lower mileage - something around 120k. On a gas car it's usually closer to 200k, but it can depend. If you're not up on service doing a fluid and filter first could help with any shifting issues
Mine has a chatter sound when cold in park or on initial acceleration. Not terrible yet but I’m about to replace it. I call it an unfortunate wear item so now I’m prepared and it won’t be a problem. Could be much worse, it’s my favorite performing auto and it’s relatively cheap and reliable too.

Great delivery. Even I can understand that. Have owned an S4 for a couple of years with DSG (an injury brought me to have an 'auto') and until now, not fully understood it. Absolutely love the three in one gearbox choices. As an engineer, would you agree that fuel economy, whilst not the prime reason for the purchase, would be better than a manual also? Would love to hear any comments as I am amazed at the fuel figures, unless I am going full chat (only on the track officer) Many Thanks again from the UK Be lucky.
I would love to hear your thoughts on the Mercedes Speedshift transmission (722.9 etc). Sir why did the previous Audi Multitronic automatic gearbox give so many problems when i for example had the Audi A4 which was so frustrating when i took the car into the Audi dealerships they had to order a replacement from Germany which took over a month to receive in the end i got rid of that car and opt for a VW T - Cross DSG ( Direct shift gearbox ) as you said VW are well known for there smooth gearbox touch wood i had no problems when i purchased my T - Cross in 2019 in South Africa? by the way your explanation was very good now i understand better!!!!
Audi TT 3.2 came exactly same time as R32, also Beetle RSI (which weren't DSG) were published in same period (you can see quickly, that these 3 were "same cars")
Great video. Love the DSG but still prefer a manual(I don't want to see the manual go away). I own a totally stock 2010 GTI and a stock 2008 Jetta Wolfsburg(FSI) with DSG.
Because there are many variables in this equation - age and mileage of the clutches, the tune itself, and the various strategies they use for clamping pressures, transitions, etc, it can vary. As a general rule for most road racing and high performance street driving applications, the DQ250 can handle something around 500 lb-ft of torque on stock clutches without any issues. We have some additional information here: blog.fcpeuro.com/the-definitive-guide-to-the-dsg-transmission
Hi every good explanation of dsg.. in my car there is a metal sound while shifting 2 to 3 gear and vice Versa not if top gears… what is the problem flywheel?
Hey just found your channel. Amazing stuff tons of info, question though, do you have a video on replacing the actual clutch or flywheel on a DSG transmission mine is having similar issues that you talked about. Thanks and can’t wait to see all of your content. 👍
I really wanted a manual TDI Mk6 Golf but there wasn’t a good one around so I settled with DSG and I’m very happy with it. Very great performance for an automatic I still prefer the fun of a clutch though. My flywheel is about to need replacement though so I’m gonna add a Wavetrac LSD while I’m in there.
Great video, informative. I bought my first DCT car 7/20/23 due to the performance. What can you say about stepping on the brake while in drive during stop and go traffic? Been hearing bad things will happen. Thank you.
Hi, thanks for the helpful and comprehensive video! I own a VW Passat with DQ381 7. I would like to ask if it is normal to hear even a slight shift from 2nd to 3rd and from 3rd to 2nd? I don't always hear it and can barely feel the knocking sound. Thank you!
Thankyou for the information its impressive that stock DSG are capable with such abuse like track use, i thought the transmission had internal hardware upgrade. I was doing some research on A6 3.0tfsi had quiet good perfomance up to 500hp upgrade with APR kit and i found out it has DL382 code that not yet explained in the video, I wondering how good is it?
DQ381 has advantages of MPG. But the issue is the plate. Some shops break down the DQ381 and found it is thinner than DQ500. However, they found just change the plate can make it will be much better

So what releases the pressure on the clutch packs? Does the solenoid supply oil pressure to engage or disengage the clutch? I would assume oil pressure would engage the clutch otherwise it would use springs to hold pressure on the friction plates and I assume having one clutch disengaged for a long time (I.e motorway driving) would cause the spring free length to become below min spec pretty quick.
Great video, quick question, where do the DSG/Steptronic units fitted to the 1.4 hybrids fit in to this? I understand they're a more compact 6spd with the wet clutches?
Great Video; thanks. Long time FCP customer and fan. I have a higher hwy mileage B8 S4 with regular fluid changes running a new replacement Mechatronic flawlessly for last three years and have stage 2 ECU and TCU tunes. I have a shifting issue becoming more and more noticeable whereby my odd-to-even gear (1/3/5 to 2/4/6) upshifts are slightly rougher and delayed with a slight RPM upsurge vs even-to-odd, or all downshifts. Most noticeable is 3-4, and all more prevalent when 3,500+ RPMS. Any thoughts you could share on where I should be focusing my attention would greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hi,I have a brand new Golf 8 eTSI with DSG/DQ200 gear box, and from a firs day I have some strange noise clattering metal to metal at low speed.I complained to official service in Serbia and they gave me answer from VW factory that this noise is normal thing. What is yours opinion?
Amazing dsg presentation reall enjoyed all the very well explained content Would like to ask you Im considering of purchasing a golf Mk6 20 tdi year 2011 with dsg transmission it has already 90k miles on it What do you suggest should I go for it or find a manual transmission?
You are wrong about the recall on the mechatronic unit. My 2008 GTI had the problem at 30k miles. The dealer "fixed" it, and VW extended the warranty to 100k miles. Unfortunately, the problem with the mechatronic unit caused excessive wear on the clutches, so at just about 100k miles, the clutches are slipping.

This is awesome detailed explanation of dct here on YT
Hi Leeto, whether you are shifting in eco or sport mode, the clutches will continually be operating, so the wear will always be there. However, if you always drive in sport mode, you may want to consider increasing your service intervals.
Hi! I hope you can help me sir. I own a vwmk7 wagon 2.0 tdi 2016 with an engine code DEJ. Im from manila now my question is during heavy traffic like an hour so bumper to bumper. Is it ok to put in D mode whille your foot on break like 5 minutes or more is it ok to creep the car in a heavy traffic?
I have a 2019 7seed DSG mated to a diesel 2.0L 190hp was told by the dealership they only change the oil as the filter is long life. Same with the haldex clutch just oil change. It that the way things are just done now?
Excelent explanation. I have a question and I hope you can answer it. I have SEAT Ateca 1.5 TSI ,110KW,DSG, production year 2021. I purchase brand new and I have 6000km till today, but start noticing that when the DSG shift from D1-D2, or D2-D1 make some klung, knock noice, some metal noice. Not everytime, but strat to doing more and more. Do have any idea what it can couse that noize. Thanks
My DQ250 DSG box on my 2007 Passat has surpassed 230,000 miles, which for the 3C2 BMR engine it is coupled with is itself a miracle, and it still shifts very smoothly. All oil / filter services performed and about to have its 2nd Dual Mass Flywheel replacement. The 3C2s (aka B6) were the worst car Volkswagen made and many have still covered 200k miles or more. Not bad if that's their worst car!

@@rambow70 I did not tune it
Thank you so much I just bought a mk6 gti and I've been having lots of transmission issues with this lately so this helps a lot.
mechatronic issues most likely
Driving a manual is awesome. Driving a car with a DSG will really make you look at automatic transmissions differently. Man they are fun.
Thank you for a really great video! Is the process the same for the DQ500 gear type?
Excellent video, really well explained. I would also like to thank you all at FCP Euro for helping me out, Audi in the UK and Germany were out of stock of a cylinder head bolt for some warranty work on my C7 RS6, you guys had stock and sent it to me in a few days, so thank you very much for helping me. FCP Euro is a really good option, if you can’t get the part in Europe, it’s worth trying them as the shipping cost was very reasonable.
Excellent presentation! Been trying to find such to
explain why we are impressed with our 2019 Audi RS 3
transmission. This is the presentation that all can
understand!
Watched again today, to help explain the transmission to a friend who considering buying an Audi RS 3 as warm weather arrives and some Audi RS 3's may actually be available this year. Again, a great presentation!
And again at the gas station this morning. A new RS 3 owner looking for a good Audi RS 3 technical web page. Sent him here ofcourse!
I love the FCP videos. Great source of information on VAG cars. Please, don’t ever stop!!!
Best breakdown of the dual clutch I've seen so far 👍👍
Great presentation and detail. I believe my DMF is starting to go out and one of the tell-tale signs I'm experiencing, and have read is a sign, is a clickety clack at idle that can be heard in the engine area. It's a little inconsistent, as the rhythm changes a bit. Do you agree this is related to a DMF going bad? Not gonna try this repair myself. It will be going somewhere for service. Everything else I've done myself to this point.
This really helps explain the transmission in my new to me 2016 Passat VR6, thanks guys!
did not press forward button :) THANK YOU!
There is one issue, however
Whenever I go from drive to reverse gear or from parked to reverse gear, it makes this clunking noise as if it’s trying to get into a gear several times,, but then completely disengages
I have been driving a car like this for two years now so strictly speaking it doesn’t interfere with general use and whenever transmission fails to get into a reverse gear once in a while I just turned off and turn the car back on and it reverses just fine
At first, I was told that it alignment issue so I went ahead and have her replaced the transmission and engine mounts
I also did a transmission, flush gearbox service, and none of it helped
After watching this video, I’m thinking that I may need to replace the flywheel, but also I’m wondering if it’s worth trying to first reset the Metronic unit as well as the ECU because flywheel replacement is a very expensive procedure for me as I am a student
If you have any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.
Great video
might need a new clutch pack
Hands down that is got to be the best explanation of DSG boxes now this is got me thinking perhaps I should buy one a 2020 21 onwards I'm presuming here in the UK it would be a 7-speed DSG well done boss you explained it and take away some of my fears don't get the business about farts
Superb video getting into the nitty gritty of DSG boxes' pro's and cons, just this one video could save a lot of VAG owners a lot of money, don't be duped by the wallet robbers and chancers .
Haha, yes all things do have their drawbacks. I don't mind the sound, more the "term" :D. Really appreciate the kind words! We do get out and about around the country, if you check our schedule at events.fcpeuro.com you may find something a bit closer than Connecticut. -Nathan
@@fcpeuro Hi Nathan as per your video I do like the sound when I'm caning it around a country road on my own.. in town it's a bit umm.. Anyway, an update on my vibration issue, had the engine mounts replaced and problem solved, they had both lost the fluid, both housings were cracked and one of them had lost the lower casting, a real mess and I saved at least £1800. Videos like yours are priceless so please keep up the great work for us 'real drivers' .

‘14 Jetta TDI w/ rawtek kit and tunes for ecu and tcu. Pushing 135k miles now and noticed a hard shift yesterday full throttle. Now I know what I need to do and what to expect in the future!! Thanks agains
This is the best explanation of DSG. Thank you.
i bought a 2014 passat TDI last year because it was the cheapest car i could find in my area with under 90,000 miles. I didn’t know much at the time, but after a year of ownership it’s been interesting learning about the TDI and its cult following, and of course just now finding out my DSG is some performance transmission 😂 I love the car, best 10 grand I’ve ever spent
Great video and much appreciated. You have mentioned the "as long as you maintain" principles....what about the poorly maintained units? What can be expected?
For my 07 VW GLI FSI mecatronica failed, I have to replace it myself and took it to the dealer to get it calibrated/
re-programed
You got this, Oscar!
Been chasing a drivetrain shutter in a low mileage 2022 Audi Q55e with a 7 speed DSG. Got a little better after changing center diff fluid. Watching this excellent video I'm wondering if there are any known early failures of the dual mass flywheels, Shutter is accelerating uphill at cruising speeds.
I don't know if you have but you should do a video on how to use Manuel mode in a dsg and the differences between them, maybe what to look out for and don't do etc.
Great video.6 speed DSG for the win
2018 Alltrack SE owner here. The only downside I have with mine is the hesitation while the DSG engages from a stop. Couple it with with the turbo lag, and the off the line acceleration suffers.
Yeah, only thing I don't like with the DSG in the Alltrack too.
@@elestromusicgamesfun1101 it protects the clutches
Amazing video! Great detail. But no mention of DQ200? Which I believe wasn’t a great transmission? Is that right?
i just purchased a s4 first video i came looking for. first time audi owner coming from Mercedes. well explained i believe maintenance is key to any thing never had any issues with amgs hoping the same here if maintained correctly. cheers for the vid
This is the best and most thorough explanation I've watched for a layman as myself. Thank you for it.
I have a 2014 Jetta Sportwagen TDI with the DSG, where would you recommend I start with mods to get a sportier feeling out of my engine/transmission combination?

What are the basic settings of the DQ200 on the 2014 Jetta Hybrid? What is the basic tool that I need to buy to perform the basic setting of Machatroninc DQ200 on this 2014 Jetta Hybrid.
You didn't talk about Porsche with the PDK and the types of transmissions. Maybe you can do a video on that.
Best video so far I have watched about DSG
Great explanation DSG, thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge.
Hello
I have a dq250 and i have a problem with the N216 valve and i dont get the 2nd gear... o get in the vagcom short to plus in the vag.... dont know if only change the valve or the entire mechatronic ...can you give me a way to go ..thanks great video
Run basic settings then drive using the paddles only. Do not select D before driving in all the gears with the paddles/manual mode.
@andrert2178 hi thanks for the reply I already fixed .... a guy from Norway help me I pay a little fee and he was extremely helpful I change the entire mechratonic and re programmed it .... the car it's like the first day thanks
Will this be more reliable than a CVT? I recently replaced my failed Nissan Altima CVT car with a GTI DSG and I am hoping to get at least 10 years of driving.
Would love to hear any comments as I am amazed at the fuel figures, unless I am going full chat (only on the track officer)
Many Thanks again from the UK
Be lucky.
I would love to hear your thoughts on the Mercedes Speedshift transmission (722.9 etc). Perhaps a discussion about fluid change intervals (is it better to change the fluid more often that the manufacturer specifies); what to watch out for when buying a second hand car; common issues with the TCU, MCT and valve body; correct fluid etc
Does using launch control on this type of transmission hurt it?

Audi TT 3.2 came exactly same time as R32, also Beetle RSI (which weren't DSG) were published in same period (you can see quickly, that these 3 were "same cars")
They are focused on the American market.
Great video. Love the DSG but still prefer a manual(I don't want to see the manual go away). I own a totally stock 2010 GTI and a stock 2008 Jetta Wolfsburg(FSI) with DSG.
You are missing out, do a simple tune, it will wake the car up and make the driving experience way better
Great video , what is the max torq when clamping press is set to max by tcu tuning that dq250 can handle ?
Tia
Because there are many variables in this equation - age and mileage of the clutches, the tune itself, and the various strategies they use for clamping pressures, transitions, etc, it can vary. As a general rule for most road racing and high performance street driving applications, the DQ250 can handle something around 500 lb-ft of torque on stock clutches without any issues. We have some additional information here: blog.fcpeuro.com/the-definitive-guide-to-the-dsg-transmission
very informative but I missed the DQ200? ( the one with the dry clutch)
Awesome description man thanks for your time explaining it all 🙂

Hey just found your channel. Amazing stuff tons of info, question though, do you have a video on replacing the actual clutch or flywheel on a DSG transmission mine is having similar issues that you talked about. Thanks and can’t wait to see all of your content. 👍
I really wanted a manual TDI Mk6 Golf but there wasn’t a good one around so I settled with DSG and I’m very happy with it. Very great performance for an automatic I still prefer the fun of a clutch though. My flywheel is about to need replacement though so I’m gonna add a Wavetrac LSD while I’m in there.

I'd like to put out there I was ECU stage 1 and ran a 14.8, and a TCU tune got me down to 14.5. 5280

What do you suggest should I go for it or find a manual transmission?
No mention of dry clutch DQ200?
Thanks for this video. It answered all my questions. Very clear and concise!
Shout out to the algorithms for reading my mind. Great info FCP, I just got your S-tronic service kit...I'm not a fan of the DSG farts, hopefully a tune can minimize it.
How much of this carry’s over to the EVO X MR?
I been driving for about 5 yrs now with my 2017 ioniq with DSG or DCT…I noticed my clutch starts slipping around 120K ish driving…I’m on my 2nd transmission now and recently hav a burnt smell…I’m pretty sure as my dealer said it’s my clutch disc need replacement along with the troubled code of P0901 actuator …my question is if I don’t shift to sport mode at all and just use economy driving mode…Would it extend or prolong the lifespan of my clutches or clutch disc more than 120K or even reach 200K miles? This is awesome detailed explanation of dct here on YT
Hi Leeto, whether you are shifting in eco or sport mode, the clutches will continually be operating, so the wear will always be there. However, if you always drive in sport mode, you may want to consider increasing your service intervals.

It is normal if it happens during traffic driving
My DQ250 DSG box on my 2007 Passat has surpassed 230,000 miles, which for the 3C2 BMR engine it is coupled with is itself a miracle, and it still shifts very smoothly. All oil / filter services performed and about to have its 2nd Dual Mass Flywheel replacement. The 3C2s (aka B6) were the worst car Volkswagen made and many have still covered 200k miles or more. Not bad if that's their worst car!
