    The Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG) transmission, developed by VW, traces its history back to the early 2000s when it was first introduced in the MK4 R32 in Europe. This transmission combines the efficiency of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic, DSG quickly gained popularity and became a benchmark for dual-clutch transmission technology in the automotive industry.
    Today we tear apart the 6 Speed DSG Transmission out of our MK5 R32!
    This Trans had problems being stuck in 2nd gear, would go into limp mode with the PRNDS lights flashing, had a loud clicking noise while idle, and had a nasty whine noise on deceleration. We had a feeling that our R32 would need a transmission, so we pulled this one out and saved it for this video! we wanted to tear apart this DSG to both see how these transmissions work and find the damage left behind!

    I've had a VW 6 spd manual in an MK8 GTI and recently a DSG in an MK8 R. The DSG is an amazing piece of engineering and as much as I love manuals, I feel the DSG is the proper transmission for the Golf R. As an $800 USD option it's a steal.

As much as I thought about getting a MK8 GTI manual, there's nothing wrong with my MK7.5 DSG car and so I stage 1 tuned and did the DSG tune. It's amazing what these trans can handle just by a tune. This model has the DQ200 transmission (dry clutch DSG), and it is pretty amazing, but it indeed has that infamous unrealiabiity history due to being 'fragile'. This year the trans failed all of a sudden, then she took it to Audi and they covered the services for its replacement, given she did all the services regularly there.
      It took them 2 months to repair it (mostly due to having to wait for parts to come) and the bill was around 8k USD (rough convertion to the 40k BRL bill), which is nuts considering the car is estimated at around 75k BRL, so more than half the value of it....

    I’ve had an MkV Golf 1.9TDi with one of these and although, I had to spend just over £600 on it to replace the flywheel or the clutch(?) if I remember right, it was the gearbox that changed my view on auto gearboxes. I’ve had various Mercedes (SL, 190E, C/E 4/6 cylinders) and some awful Subarus (Outback/Impreza) with auto gearboxes, but no other gearbox came close to the speed, convenience and comfort of this. I still toy with the idea of getting either an auto GTI or an A3 with one of these.

    I have a 2013 GTI / DSG with 211,000 miles, much of it highway mileage. I'm concerned however, because nothing lasts forever. The DSG has been flawless thus far. Because much of my driving is highway, I've been doing my DSG oil changes about 60-70K miles. The fluid always looks nice and clear, only a little darker than the new VW fluid that replaces it. This GTI is the best car I've owned, hoping it will see 300,000 miles someday.

    • @Fmandan77
      @Fmandan77 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, my engine is completely stock. It's been nearly flawless. The OEM water pump began to leak after I received an early recall notice, so I had it replaced. Since then I replaced the coil packs after two failed. Outside of oil changes and spark plugs, I didn't replace anything until the 190,000 mile mark when my idle was becoming noticeably rough. I had received a notice from VW that my GTI's intake manifold was likely faulty, but my mileage was beyond what they covered. So I chose to replace the intake when I did a valve cleaning and replaced the fuel injectors as well. With a new intake, clean valves and new injectors the car idles like new once again. As a precautionary measure, I have an appointment to have the timing chain, tensioner and guides replaced later this month. I'm letting VW complete this task which will be the first time they've seen the car since my early water pump replacement. @@BLACKRACERONE

    Can't believe they don't make replacement parts. Basically you'll be throwing out a transmission that was fine apart from a single bearing. But then again for the VW group, it's not really a surprise. The one question I have though, it can select two gears, one that you're driving with and a future gear. How does it know if the next gear change will be up or down?!
    Thanks for the fun video!

      I can’t say for certain but it’s probably programmed to look for user input and body movement. If you’re on the gas pedal it knows that you’re going to continue moving up through the gears so it queues next gear, if you remove your foot from the accelerator, it can likely assume you’re going to slow down and it needs to queue a lower gear - if I were to guess - I’m sure there are a ton of other sensor input and programming things but what I’ve explained is probably 80% of it.

    I bought an audi rs3 early this year and they only come with a DSG. Its actually the sturdiest dsg vw builds, the DQ500 , which is actually rated for 600NM, weird right? tho they supposedly handle 800nm stock and up to 1000 on upgraded clutches very well. a coworker complains about the 250 or 381 not being very happy with handeling more than stock power.
    I miss the feeling of a manual but this thing does it pretty well i would say. it is a perfect bridge between comfort, effiency and "sportyness". Put it into manual and you feel like racing driver, pulling peddals, smashing in the next gear. you can even "manually" shift with the stick but vw/audi fucked up the orientation. so you pull on the shifter for down and push for up. Porsche does it the other way arround like in every sequential you see on rally cars and such. Works very well but it can get "overwhelmed" when you shift into a gear it didnt expect. like when you want to downshift from 3rd to 2nd but were crusing before so it had 4th selected. takes a second before it shifts the appropriate gear and then engages it.

    • @sarcastixx74
      @sarcastixx74 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The DQ500 isn't the sturdiest of the variants, that title belongs to the DQ800 which is found on the second gen R8s and Lambo Huracans. The 800 can handle over 1200Nm with stage 3 race clutch packs. The DQ500 and DL501 (longitudinal engine variant) are near identical in specs and I believe the mechatronic units for both boxes are the same. I've run TVS stage 2+ TCU tune on my stage 2+ B8 S4 and it has totally transformed how the car drives. Butter smooth up/down shifts in normal drive mode and satisfying DSG farts when giving it some. But like you I'm totally sold on this type of transmission and absolutely love it. Also looking forward to when I eventually upgrade to a C7 (or C7.5 if budget allows) RS6 next spring. I can see why people are wary of them though, but I simply ignored all the internet hate on them as the known faults were widely exaggerated and quickly ironed out with recalls on the first gen units with lower quality oil that allowed sulphur buildup/failure on the mechatronic units.

Mines for example slips when changing into 2, 4 and 6th only by 200-300 revs apart from that drives normal no other slippage, it does have a TCU tune as it modded and I am having a hardtime seeing if software is at fault or hardware.

    • @Deutscheautoparts
      @Deutscheautoparts  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Probably a clutch pack issue but diagnosing it specifically is very hard.
      Generally most DSG problems are either the mech unit or the clutch pack. Pinpointing which one is often not possible. This means you have to either attempt to replace the parts or put a used transmission in.
      As vehicles get higher mileage we generally recommend a known good used trans as it’s often the most cost effective way to guarantee the vehicle is repaired.

      If you want no quirks, I would pick any DSG on the MQB platform. As a personal MK6 DSG GTI owner. I love the car, and the transmission. BUT, as people have mentioned and in this video, cars like to lurch from a stop, it being cold can make it act weird, and if you're not ready for a high repair cost if it ever needs to be taken care of, don't buy one, stick with a manual. Even with my GTI being taken care of, and having both of it's DSG services being done on time, it still likes to act weird.
