I just finished watching this video and I'm just sitting here with my mouth open. It's a great new space. The new woodworking equipment is a huge upgrade. When you add what you just did to the equation it is an exponential leap. I'm a step or two behind you in the evolutionary process and I am so acutely interested in what you're doing. Keep the videos coming.

I am looking into setting up a system in my new shop with approximately the same # of tools. I know you went all in with Oneida and they most likely gave the best system for endorsement and completely understand this. But for those of us that do not have that luxury, can you provide a ballpark of cost and any suggestions where you think savings can occur. This is not a negative comment because of your association with Oneida, I just want to be informed before I take the plunge. Thank you for this insightful video.

I went with an Oneida system, maybe 20 years ago... One of the best ever investments I ever made in my shop. They have new and improved just about everything. Mine is a 3 hp system, and my old shop was 24 by 36. My new shop is maybe 2400 feet, but the DC sits in the middle. The ground wire is a new thing. There has always been talk about static build up and sparking with the potential of starting fires. Never heard of it happening, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared. The sensor in the collection bin is new. I could have used it many times. I had found my filter totally full of 'stuff'.... Not sure what they say about cleaning the filter. When mine filled up, I ended up taking it out to the back yard, and then hosed off the inside. The old filters were paper, and it didn't seem to change anything, other than keep the dust down in the neighborhood. The quick clamp seals for pipe junctions is a great idea, as are the wire loop things for suspending the duct work. I do wish I had a 12 foot ceiling in my shop. Mostly so I could move full sheets of plywood around more easily. Hard to pivot a full sheet when you have a 9 foot ceiling, but my shop was designed so it would be converted into a house when my birth certificate expires.... The remote control things are new as well, I had one called 'the Lone Ranger'. It was set on an FM frequency so you could even turn it on from outside, and not have to point it at the receiver. I did make a point to have 2 of them. Mostly because I have several wood lathes, and lost one in the shavings. The one in the lathe room is on a hook. The other in the flat work room floats around since half the time I forget to put on my apron.... Any comments about removing dust build up in the filter? Some just tap the outside of the filter. I have seen some that had a 'beater' on the inside to knock the dust loose. One other feature I had considered would be a 'slow' speed so you could filter out all the floating dust in the shop rather than using an air scrubber thing....

Oneida has sure progressed since I bought my Oneida system back in 1994. It was Oneida first system. They where only really making cyclone separaters and oversized felt bag filters at the time. Which was attached to an off the shelf dust collector. I have been upgrading it recently with iVAC PRO Blast Gates and newer duct work.

I bought the 7.5hp regular Oneida cyclone and made an extension arm for a neighbor's car motor hoist to lift the fan-motor onto the stand. That fan and motor must have been 400 lbs. I was using my 170 lbs to counterweight to lift and as soon as I moved forward to center the fan on the cyclone cone the hoist would start to tip. Finally collected enough bricks from the yard to lift the
cyclone into position. Without the hoist it might have taken 3 men to do that work. Oneida has been a good purchase for keeping my woodworking shop clean.

Very nice! In my previous house I had a dust collector for my table saw, and also a floor sweeper. It had a 20' hose that would collapse down to about 4' or maybe a litte less. It was definitely better than having 20' of pipe coiled up on the floor.

Hi Tamar, Thanks for sharing your dust collection upgrade. I have a new dust collector also that I'm anxious to get installed. It's not as elaborate as your bust still a huge upgrade from the shop vac. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the new video. Setting up proper dust collection in a small shop seems to be quite mysterious. (Or, at least, I found it to be so.) Videos like yours are super useful! Interestingly, the Dust Gorilla Pro with the Quick-Clamp ducts is my current plan. Either that, or the High Vacuum system Oneida sells. After suffering with inadequate dust collection for so long, I would rather go overboard and have a system with more capacity than I might need. Thanks again!

Great system, Congrats!!! It really gets your shop at the next level!
really enjoyed the video and am thinking about doing the same in my own shop.
Just one thing to be mindful about the vacuum extension and the floor sweep, you have to be really carefull about NOT vacuuming any metal (like a screw or a nut) in this system. It can create a spark that can light the wood chips in your bin on fire and burn your house down. This is why these are prohibited in professional shops out here in Québec.
Keeping a good old shop vac is the solution for the floor sweeping.

    Excellent work, Tamar, as always.
I have the identical system in my shop, with the exception that I have added iVac automated blast gates throughout. They are absolutely game-changing. No more thinking about what's open and what's closed; you simply turn on a machine, and the appropriate gate opens while all the rest remain closed. Turn on a second machine, and its gate opens, while the one that was previously running remains open. Brilliant!
Compared to the cost of the 5-hp cyclone and Nordfab-style ducting, automating the blast gates throughout is easily affordable.
Can't wait to see your video on their addition to your new system.

Let me just say that it will take your dust collector to such another level that you will think it's in the stratosphere. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they wouldn't send you a handful of these for being such a popular TH-cam channel.

Great setup, Tamar~! I'm currently using a homemade "dust-zilla" setup where I converted my Harbor Freight DC into a 2-stage with an Oneida Dust Deputy. So far, the HF DC with the PVC ducting is working pretty good, but the rig you have is what I'd like to upgrade to.....one day. This video was great motivation to move in that direction. Thanks for sharing it~!

    Great video and excellent installation!
Nordfab duct systems are great - and expensive - but worth it if one can afford it! I installed mine a few months ago and once I understood the layout needed, it went together fast!
I have a ClearVue Cyclone 1450, and it is quite awesome with 6 machines and a floor sweep being collected via blast gates.
Something I noticed about the 5 horse 3-phase motor was the heat gain. The motor when operating averaged about 135 degrees of heat dissipation (based on thermal gun readings) at the top of the motor housing. During the summer months this will increase the temperature in my shop significantly and likely will require added fans to move the heated air around a bit.

    • @3x3CustomTamar
      @3x3CustomTamar  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I noticed the heat already. We shall see how that goes

  • @Poundy

that is just one heck of an upgrade. II am sure you'll love having all that power to hand when you need it.
One thing though about the curves in the pipework. It still is true that you lose efficiency in turns, even though it can still pull the static dust and chips from your router table. If you had less bends, it'd do it better, and/or at lower power used / work easier. Nothing wrong with having a few (nobody's shop is "straight" after all) but minimising the 90's and using 45's can certainly get you an efficiency benefit. Ultimately the fine dust is the thing you want to eliminate anyhow, not big heavy chips, and that's about moving a greater volume of air and the fact you've got large main trunks going to the locations you have is great !
