I'm an 82 year old boat carpenter who spends more time enjoying videos like yours than I do in my shop thanks to sore joints etc. A lot of my body parts hurt these days and what doesn't hurt doesn't work but I still love spending time building nice projects. I can't tell you what a pleasure it was to watch you build this nice bench. You have combined modern methods and machinery with a very high level of workmanship and you even pick up a plane or a chisel too. I have worked with some top-notch craftsmen and you can hold you own with any of them. By the way, they make mistakes too. I'm looking forward to watching you build some more interesting projects.

Tamar, this workbench is so beautifully executed and versatile. I want to cry at the unbridled elegance and utility of this object. You are an engaging, terrific teacher and a master craftsperson. It is one accomplishment to design and make this workbench… and yet another to explain HOW to make it, with sufficient details to inspire others to follow in your path. Thank you for your generosity of spirit.

First off, this bench is absolutely amazing! Second, thank you so much for being willing to show us when things go wrong or when mistakes happen. For those of us still in the "make something garbage and learn from it" phase, seeing highly skilled woodworkers make the kind of mistakes that we would make and still turn out great work is super encouraging because it reinforces the idea that skill isn't about not making mistakes, but knowing how to fix them and not panic when they happen. I learn a lot from your videos!

Something to bere in mind lass, you DON'T want to counter sink unless you absolutely have to, it's much better to use a brass dome head screw in a counter bore as the sloped sides between the screw and wood create pressure points that will lead to splitting over time, but if you use a flat or dome headed screw set into a counter bore that issue is almost completely eliminated.

“We all make stupid mistakes, the only difference is mine was caught on camera.” True story. We ALL make mistakes in our projects. Woodworking TH-camrs who show their mistakes (and more importantly, how they fix them!!) are to my mind more honest and demonstrate a true instructor’s mindset than those who show perfect technique every time. Love your workbench, Tamara!

I'm sure you will enjoy every project you will build on it.

  • @Wellspicedchaffinch
    @Wellspicedchaffinch 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Regarding the ankle sprain injury; two tips I learnt many, MANY years ago - which stuck with me - is to think of the health and safety of the item you're carrying too - and clearing the path you're about to carry it via. If you don't want to drop or damage the thing you're carrying (OR injure yourself) then check the route is clear before you lift the thing. I always nowadays check my route for trip hazards, stuff I might have to contort to get around, etc. It takes a couple of mins for a long route - but my back needs me to be careful these days. It would've saved your workpiece from the drop, your camera from being in the way, and your ankle from the (freak/rare) injury. Obviously hindsight is 20/20 vision but it's a good data point to reaffirm the tips as valuable.
Oh and by God that workbench is amazing - totally inspiring and super helpful for my upcoming workbench build. Thank you ever so much for taking the time to explain the features/benefits. Seeing your love for your designs and those pop-up dogs etc is so wholesome and energising to experience.

Nice bench and ouch, I felt your frustration and anger at yourself at the end there. I've hurt myself in the shop several times and in pretty much every case it was because I did something I knew I shouldn't have done and felt like a moron. Thankfully it was a just a rolled ankle and the top didn't land on your foot and break it. I was talking with a guy at a Woodcraft a little while back who was moving a walnut slab and it slipped and fell and landed right on his shin. It scraped the whole bottom of his leg and even a while later it was still all bruised and messed up. I remember one time myself I was working on the frame of my bench. I rested a dead blow mallet on the edge of the top stretcher for some stupid reason while i was underneath installing the lower shelf. Of course, I bumped it and the dead blow mallet fell off 2x4 stretcher it was precariously rested on and fell right on the tip of my finger. Thankfully, I didn't break anything, but man it was painful. We are always worried about chopping our fingers off with our saws, but many times we forget that other things in our shop can still be dangerous, even just the wood we use can cause significant injuries. Glad you are doing okay.

The only thing I’d change if I were to build it is a tool well in place of the spacer, I’ve tried a spacer with tool slots but I’m way too messy and lazy to use them, a well catches everything for me. Shows the danger of working alone out there with no one around. You might wanna work out a plan for getting help in the case you need help ASAP. Maybe phone always in your pocket or something else. Too many tools that can cause some bad injuries quick like that new bandsaw. My man Jay Bates almost had his hand swung into his blade recently. Beautiful bench and there’s literally only one bench that I’ve ever seen that blows yours out of the water. Please don’t take that as a downgrade (my intention is a high compliment) as the one Pedulla Studio built. Honestly it needs to be in a woodworkers museum.

Your human like the rest of us. The beauty of your channel Tamar is that you show them. I would have paniced too and probably done something much more wasteful,so dont sweat it. It will help me as i am in the middle of building my new assembly table only I have made it more challenging by putting a dowel thru the middle of my top.the means making sure i drill a hole through each board in the same place. Your skill level has really grown and it is wonderful to watch you and your channel grow.

I am a huge fan of your site and admirer of your designs! As I have been planning every phase of my new workshop over the past several months, I have been saving ideas from all of the top TH-cam channels for comparison. Time and time again, when I watch your projects, Tamar, I end up picking yours over the others. Whether it’s your crosscut sled, your tenon or 6-in-1 jigs, I find them to be the best practical designs for my shop. Now I have just finished watching your workbench build, and have finally found the perfect combination of features for me, too. And the icing on the cake, you also came up with the dog hole jig that I have been searching for! Better than the rest, and more affordable!

I don't normally like cliffhanger endings (in yt videos, they can feel like creators milking it). but in this case, the whole process is super in-depth and interesting, so I'm glad you took your time with it!! I hope your ankle heals soon. and those "prairie dogs" are brilliant and have the best name ever!!

This design is totally brilliant! I was horrified by the injury though. I pray for perfect healing of your ankle. One thing you may consider building in the future is a ceiling mounted boom under spring tension to support your camera. It frees up your floor space and is easily positioned for any angle to shoot from. A couple knobs for tightening and you are good to go. I'm working on my own and plan to make 2 with removable floorplates for quick changes. Cheers on the completion of this project, it is beautiful.

This turned out to be simply a stunning build, Tamar! I love the way you include options and flexibility throughout the entire workbench. The forethought that went into the design (after months of thinking and planning I am sure) is clearly evident. Something I can totally relate to as I am prone to design my projects with options in mind as well. You are at another level though! Thank you so much for sharing this build with us. I am currently at a loss for words to adequately describe the respect I have for your abilities--great job!
Thank you, too, for sharing the ankle sprain accident with us. It is a good reminder that a tidy work area is another important consideration when working around the shop. The accident looked extremely painful and am glad it ultimately wasn't more serious. It appears you have healed up and are ready to tackle your next project. Can't wait to see your new workbench in action!

Oof, that sprained ankle looked painful. Hope it's feeling back to normal, injuries like that have a tendency to last. Also hope the camera that fell was ok!
As far waiting to hang things on the end of the bench, I recommend temporarily attaching them to see how positioning works. Double sided tape works great for this. Then you can re-position without leaving a bunch of screw holes or something.

Your bench is beautiful! I really like the way you combined old and new styles. Plus your closing comments helped me a lot - I’m planning an assembly table/track saw cutting station and keep stopping, thinking I have to figure out every detail before I get started. Now I realize that as long as I figure out *how* drawers, etc will go in, I don’t have have to complete that right away. I can work with the table and get a better idea of what I will need and where to locate tools and rulers later.
