Love the band and this song. Almost every song from this album will have the same impression in you guys (this track is from their debut album)! The 2nd and 3rd are incredibly good too, but the first is still my favorite.
Maybe you don't know this, but this song was Added To Sydney Conservatorium Music Studies Curriculum in 2013.
    Read the article:
"Australian metallers Ne Obliviscaris have seen their song "And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope" from their debut album Portal Of I included in a teaching curriculum at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, one of Australia's most prestigious classical Conservatories. The song will undergo a compositional analysis by Professor Matthew Hindson, Chair of Composition at the Conservatorium. "And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope" will be studied as part of the curriculum.
Matthew Hindson is a renowned classical composer whose works have been performed by ensembles and orchestras throughout the world.
Professor Hindson commented: "I will be presenting 'And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope' to the composition students at the Conservatorium next semester as an exemplar in structure, mixing timbres, meters, modes, how to approach virtuosity, sound and noise, extended performance and techniques. The students will need to study 2 technical aspects of what Ne Obliviscaris have done in their music, and then use these techniques in their own classical music compositions."
The Professor continues: "It is my pleasure to introduce such high quality music making to our students, alongside other music by composers including Beethoven, Gershwin, Steve Reich and Peter Sculthorpe. Musicians deserve to hear the music of Ne Obliviscaris, and the music of many other metal bands, in order to appreciate the compositional complexity that lies within it, no matter what their musical tastes."
    Incredible, isn't it?

There's is a lot of good bands out there with unique and beatiful music. Some people still says the rock is dead, but metal is very alive!
I would recommends that you guys try something like Cynic's Evolutionary Sleeper. Other bands that I would recommend that breaks some paradigms commom within metal music are Xanthocroid, Beyond Creation, Septic Flesh, Rivers of Nihil for exemple.
      Regards from Brazil!!!!!

Erich Groti Beyond Creation for sure. Perfect balance between technical and melodic metal imo.

I'd rather point them more as a Technical/progressive Death metal band , than death metal with "melodic metal" influences. But it's a damn great band indeed. I would dare to say that Earthborn Evolution is one of the most beautiful songs that you will ever find within the Death metal genera.

I've been listening to metal for about 25 years now. There hasn't been a band yet that've touched me in a way these guys' art did. They are BY FAR the most supreme and complete metal band out there. They're extremely talented intelligent and modest. You definitely want to check out their work and Xen's (the harsh vocalist) lyrics can give you material for videos for ages. Such an unique individual in his writings.
Hope you'll check them out further, literally nothing you can pick from them can be a wrong pick.
I suggest Devour me Colossus - a song about depression.
Also Intra Venus - try to figure that one out if you want :)
Libera part 1 - a song about veganism.
PS :also, kaleidoscope means a gathering of butterflies :) notice the moth on the album cover :) hope that raises more questions :P Plague flowers can also mean "plague blooming"

Love your take on the lyrics! A short summary of the lyrics from the writer; "Only when faced with extreme circumstances do our true and raw emotions/colours shine through. Every person is a work of art."
Xenoyr the growler writes the lyrics and creates the art! He is a very intelligent and humble person. With a dark background, the lyrics are an art. It has so many layers.. One of the artists that inspired him is from Poland named Zdzisław Beksiński, look him up if you're interested. The perspective on his lyrics are very different from person to person.. It's beautiful!
Tim their violinist who also sings the clean vocals, wasn't really much of a singer on this album yet. They originally had a female vocalist and Tim was purely a violinist. Until it didn't work out. Fun fact; he gives Xen syllables for the lyrics to work with.
Benji their lead guitarist often gets a few rifts to start a new (part of a) song. However, everyone from the band puts their part in before a song is done. Hence the progressive nature and length of their songs.
Matt is their rhythm guitarist who pretty much wrote Eyrie (Urn), which is a very beautiful and different song. Can highly recommend, it's beautiful.
Dan their drummer is one of the most technical insane drummer I've heard in a long time.
He recently toured Europe and played 2 sets every night! For over 30 gigs..
Sadly their bassist on this album and Citadel is no longer with them. He was a very inspirational and beautiful bassist.
    They're a really amazing band.
I actually recommend that you listen to the whole album Citadel in one sitting. It's a story, an experience that shouldn't be cut short.
Painters of the Tempest, Pyrrhic x& Devour me colossus. All incredible..
    Also, they are amazing live!

Forget not was the first song of theirs listened to, because in 2012 that was at the top of their Spotify queue. Tbh, I think Plague Flowers is a more complete masterpiece. I love Forget not, don't get me wrong, but FN has two parts - the violin intro and the rest of the Song. Plague Flowers goes through all sorts of different movements and remains coherent throughout. After those two though, my next POI favorite is Xenoflux.

You guys HAVE to do "Welcome Home" by blessthefall. It's such a beautiful song. It's about having to leave a loved one for a period of time and finding your way back or eventually going back on your own. For the vocalist it's about him going on tour and missing his family. He even has his little baby girl sing at the end and it's SO ADORABLE. Sori would absolutely love it. You both would.

Xen's (the harsh vocalist) vocals are called growling, but the clean singing is handled by the violinist Tim Charles and the sight of Sori being swept away by the current of his genius-level violin playing was great!
I can see though why Vin would prefer this over Opeth. Opeth has a lot of jarring transitions between the dynamics in their songs that make the passages feel like songs within songs and that makes for a challenging listen because it there isn't cohesion, but this song flows beautifully from start to finish and the changes in tempo are like bends in a river.
Sori, I think you WOULD LOOOOOOOVE Epica's "Canvas Of Life" and Epica period.

  • @PersonOfBlah

Hi guys. If you want to react to some other songs by them I would suggest Intra Venus and Forget Not,two really good songs. Also I would like you to react to Agalloch - In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion, and also Agalloch - Faustian Echoes, they were a great Atmospheric Folk/Doom Metal American band. Plus if you want some diferent bands from diferent genres I would sugest:
Theatre of Tragedy - A Rose for the Dead (from Norway Gothic/Doom Metal)
Wintersun - Sons of winter and stars - Live rehearsal @ Sonic Pump Studios (from Finland, Symphonic/Melodic Death Metal - it HAS to be this version, you have to see to believe)
Lacrimosa - Hohelied der Liebe (from Germany, Symphonic/Gothic Metal. Lyrics are in german but you can easily find a english translation on google)
Fleshgod Apocalypse - Epilogue (from Italy, Symphonic/Technical Death Metal)
    Black Sabbath - War Pigs
Maximum the Hormone - Yoshu Fukushu (from Japan, really hard to categorize) (you can find a translation if you search)
Cradle of Filth - Beneath the Howling Stars (from the album previous to Her Ghost in the Fog)
Bathory - Enter the Eternal Fire (from Sweden, one of the pioneers of Black Metal, this song literally describes a pact with the devil).

I can somewhat relate to the everything comes from fear of death -theory.
In the way that human brain has evolved to a point where we try and understand our existence, and from my atheistic point of view religions (for instance) were created to give comfort and take away from the unavoidable truth that we're no different from any other animals and are just going to die out like anything else. We're just trying to mask up and cover it in our quest of finding deeper meaning for life, when in fact I think the only meaning we truly have comes from very basic instincts of any animal ever, survival.
And the point about feeling invincible as a kid, it's the years before the realisation of your eventual end and meaningless hits, a childish innocence.
I can totally relate to this song, since there are moments in my life, where I lay by myself in the middle of the night, awake without being able to sleep and the crushing feeling of meaningless world hits me hard. I combat it, and it dissappears, trough art / music / entertainment / other people.

I can totally relate to that feeling you described when lying alone in your bed. Though that is not the only place where such thoughts come up for me.
What's really devestating is the fact, that I know the feeling how my believe once could comfort me, and now it can't, because I just can't believe anymore in god like I once did as a child. It's a lot more work to fill and combat the emptiness yourself than to have a greater power to find comfort in.
I am happy for every believer who finds that comfort and think it's admirable for every non-believer who conquers this fear!

The inevitability of death and its ominous progress provides the urgency of life, the desperate knowledge that this experience, this perfect sound/image/moment will be, and is, forever lost to us. The drive to capture and create beauty is, in great part, driven by the melancholy of attempting to create that perpetual moment, a legacy of beauty that can touch the fleeting soul and grant the immortality of the moment that the living body can never have. That is what the song says to me.
