Dude I don’t know, I love these guys but it was never one of my favourites. Give me any song off the album after this and I’d probably rate it over this. Still like it though, just taste I suppose
I love how this band has so many melodies playing at the same time, not only do you have guitars and singing, but violin and the bass doing it's own thing, and they make it work. My favourite song by them is their self- titled (after the band) "Forget not" from this same album, but I think you should check their newer stuff because their production has gotten much better, "Equus" or "Graal" are great examples from this year's album.
Professor Hindson commented: "I will be presenting 'And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope' to the composition students at the Conservatorium next semester as an exemplar in structure, mixing timbres, meters, modes, how to approach virtuosity, sound and noise, extended performance and techniques. The students will need to study 2 technical aspects of what Ne Obliviscaris have done in their music, and then use these techniques in their own classical music compositions."
Great song, but even better video because Tim Charles’ (clean singer/violinist) energy is just so lovely. You can really tell he was having a great time. Gotta love NeO. Thanks, y’all!
First time I ever heard this band. Reminds me a lot of older Opeth (or Oldpeth) Elements of Black, Folk, Progressive with some Thrash elements thrown in. I like it. LOVE the Guttural vocals. This is my kinda of Metal. Thanks Richard and Judson. Me likey.
That was pretty amazing. I just love contrasts in metal, like classical instruments or clear vocals mixed in. Your brain tells you it shouldn't work, but it works so damn well actually. Never heard of that band before, but I'll definitely check out more of them.
Without question.... Equus from their newest album. It's dedicated to the lives lost (animal/human) from the Australian fires a couple years ago. The live video is a MUST!
I just saw them live in Detroit with Beyond Creation 2 nights ago. It was a AWESOME concert. They closed with this song after a 90 minute set. Seeing them live was just as awesome as I was hoping 🤘
I just saw in in October! James Dorton filled in for Xen on harsh vocals and he killed it. He even did clean vocal harmonies with Tim Charles when they played Intra Venus. Melted my face off bro. Amazing show
What🤯, I just saw them last night in Montreal with Beyond Creation ! The epicness of Tim Charles starting this song with is violin; among the crowd at the balcony. 🔥😎🤘 I was surprised how i liked James Dorton (Black Crown Initiate, The Faceless) in replacement for Xenoyr vocals. Is deeper growling voice was such a great add on. And now reviving this with you, gave me chills. Thank You so much!
@@Sinted James was so good, i don't want to be disrespectful to the original lineup & i know that without Xenoyr; NeO wouldn't even exist. But a part of me like it even more with James Dorton vocals & he is also such a great performer. I knew is voice right off the bat, also because i am a big fan of BCI, but i just realized by the end of the show that it was really him.
@@futurebreedmachine9302 Yes I recognized is voice the second he started in the first song. It's only that because i didn't know how James look like & that he was replacing Xenoyr; it took me more time to realize who he was.
Next should be Devour Me, Colossus Pt. 1. Or possibly Intra Venus, but I think Devour Me, Colossus is all around a better composed song. That entire album, Citadel, is an exquisite work of art.
Painters of the tempest is their greatest composition in my opinion, and that album is my least favorite as 1 piece. I would rank the albums as 1 piece each as follows: Urn, Portal of I, Exul, Citadel.
I love how Judson just plays the piano behind him, to find the melodies in the song or whatever, with out dog dang looking! 7:58 for example I was just laughing
The only reason I ever heard of these guys was because of a reaction channel, so I'm hoping this helps more people discover them, too. Amazing band with a not big enough discography!!
From Wikipedia: "The standard tuning (from low to high) is F♯, B, E, A, D, G, B, E. Many prefer to tune the F♯ to a low E (E1), the same note as the lowest string on a four-string electric bass in standard tuning, and providing the guitar with a fuller sound by having three different E strings".
And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope from Portal of I was included in a teaching curriculum at Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the song being analysed for its composition.
seeing this song live last year was the best thing that happened in 2023. I highly recommend there songs painters of the tempest pt 2 (pt1 and 3 are just intro and outro) and equaas 2 of my all time favourite songs.
Wow, I did not know of the existence of this band. Somewhat Celtic folk music in there.. very progressive as well. I am not into LARP, but these guys change it up so fast that it keeps you fascinated. Keep on going guys! Are you both musicians on a hiatus btw? You are posting new vids very quickly!
Judson is a musician. I play guitar in my spare time. We’re getting together on weekends and recording videos when we can find the time. We’re getting together today to record more. 🤘
My next NeO recommendation would be 'Forget Not', the studio version It's their self-titled track, and it's just beautiful. Judson is right, this song really is hard to process with everything that's going on. There are so many layers, but they make it sound so good. This makes me love this band especially, because every time you listen you end up focusing on a different instrument in different parts of the song. I particularly enjoy focusing on the Bass. They have the bass so hugh in the mix, and their bassist just makes it sing for the whole song. It never gets boring.
I mentioned this band and song in one of your first videos. So glad you got to it. So many good songs to go through. Graal is such a beast of a song. Keep up The Great Measures
Not heard of them before and really enjoyed that. Reminded me a lot of Alcest in places who I'd definitely recommend. And I'm amazed you didn’t know the Godfather theme, even if you've never seen the movies.
Damn....never heard of this band but WOW. Judson mentioned Dream Theater in his reaction, but the only thing I thought about during the song was OPETH. Incredible sound this band has.
As a NeO superfan, I'd say their best stuff is some of the bigger, longer songs, like Painters of the Tempest or Misericorde (both parts, you can't just do one or the other, the song doesn't make sense without being heard as a whole). But, these grander songs will also give you the most stuff to process and will be the hardest to analyse on first listen. So I'd say, for a follow up reaction, when you're just getting into them, I'd go for either Forget Not, Pyrrhic, Tapestry of the Starless Abstract or Graal. It'll be easier to get what they're doing yet nicely encapsulates their style with their tendency to make major transitions between parts of the song.
Graal is a musical and visual piece of art. Devour me, colossus is the song that made me want to throw in the towel as a musician because they achieved all I ever wanted to with that song
I really think you guys need to do some Nevermore. Amazing proggy thrash, riffs on riffs on riffs, classically trained vocalist. Truly one of the most underrated bands of the last 30 years.
The drummer Dan is an amazingly creative drummer who has since left the band. He wrote the rhythms which were the base of their music. It will be interesting how they do without him.
Thank you for this 🙏 And anything from NeO is great. Judson went a bit speechless 👍 How about another Aussie band? Twelve foot ninja - Coming for you 🤘
They have a lot of good songs. The common thing to react to would be Devour me Colossus, Part 1; or you can react to "forget not" for their softer side or something like " Of Petrichor Weaves Black Noise" which is more straightforward. Or better yet, react to all of them xdd.
Fantastic reaction! During the song you could see the mind working 110% and trying to figure out what the f*** is going on here 😀Violin and death/black metal kind of music fit so well. The same thing with harsh vocals (growling) and vocals can fit so great toghether. Have you done Satyricon - Mother North with Oslo Symphoni Orchestra? Or Dimmu Borgir - Gatewas the live version with orchestra? Something with North in it I guess...
You have to react to septicflesh. A Greek symphonic death metal band that is guaranteed to drop your jaw. No joke, I put my Ne Obliviscaris shirt this morning, didn't know why, just felt a pull towards it when I woke up, haha. For my money, I think of NeO as a progressive black metal band as a lot of their early imagery and sounds are pretty close to that, but they've gone further away from it as the albums go and they have really carved out their own space. They are their own sound these days and it's some of my favourite stuff out there. This is actually an interesting discussion that goes on in prog metal circles a lot, the question of whether "prog metal" is a genre unto itself, or if it is just a descriptor for other genres. I think prog metal is it's own genre at this point, but I understand the difficulty in assigning that term, because prog, by nature, borrows from so many things that you can't really call something progressive metal without having to describe that particular band's version of progressive metal right afterwards. I saw NeO live back in 2018 and they are an incredible live show. Every song is such a production and they manage to bring that to the live set fully. My top song from them is "Painters of the Tempest Part II: Triptych Lux" but that one is their longest song to date and is kind of all over the place. I also love "Equus" from their latest album, and it has an incredible video to go along with it. If you're interested in more metal bands that a-typical approache to instrumentation or style then I would highly suggest checking out Native Construct. Their song "Chromatic Aberration" is an adventure unto itself. I would also put Fleshgod Apocalypse up there as for a while there they were messing around in the full symphonic orchestra space and have always been big on multiple vocal styles. "Kingborn" is a great song if you want full on over-stimulation, but their songs "Pathfinder" and "Epilogue" are subtler touches. Also there's a band called Ayreon that you might enjoy. They are closer to Dream Theater in tone, but their style is more retro prog rock band that stumbled into heavy metal. The trick with Ayreon is that all of their albums are big cheesey sci-fi rock operas, and rather than have their own singer, get singers from other bands to come and sing the different characters. A great example of their style is their song "The Day That The World Breaks Down" which also has a fun studio video to go with it as well. Alright, sorry for the wall of text, I love talking music and you guys are a fun hang. Keep it up!
NeO's Official music video Titled "Equus" from the recent album should work nicely. A 2nd music video also exists titled "Graal". Both are visual and audio journeys.
Isn't the whole point of "progressive" genres that there is no box to fit in? :D Ne Obliviscaris are the mad scientists of music. This song was included in the curriculum at Sydney Conservatorium of Music. i wonder what the students of classical music thought about it. Probably also took them some time to process. But really you can pick any other song if you want more of the beautiful chaos in your head.

@@Greatmeasures you can't go wrong with that.. it's the most well known, so it's easiest to see just how well he does recreating vocals with his guitar.. every track is great, but you can't go wrong with Holy Diver.. They named the album after it for a reason, right?
Not matter what y'all pick, Judson is gonna be sitting there a while 😂 I agree with others that Forget Not is really good. Painters of the Tempest I & II together are amazing and overlooked (review wise, critically, whatever). Part II is SO good if you stomach through the beginning as a non-metal enjoyer. Welcome to the ease of uploading "disruptive" content vs. "non-disruptive". Mainstream vs small label. Hopefully this shows the example of what I had discussed in previous comments.
@@Greatmeasures no problem but it also highlighted how quickly your subscribers get notified of an upload on some content immediately yet other stuff just doesn't show up or something else. TH-cam algorithm is something else but if you can navigate it and use it you can become "successful" but if you want to do something different then it will shove you into a corner. Pretty much turns people into sellouts if they want to be a large channel.
@@brandonlc1982 I’ve seen that happen. We’re just going to continue what we’re doing. We’re having too much fun to change it.
More Neo. Equus is good one string quartet and choir
Standard 8 string tuning is F#BEADGBE
Try listening to Equilibrium - kurzes epos!
7-string guitars
Archspire or maybe some Entheos?
They all are super talented musicians... I'm not a fan... Not particularly, but this song is a real masterpiece!
Hey! I’d like you to listen to and discuss “My Tears Ricochet” by Taylor Swift 🙏🏼
We did on our patreon page!
I saw the name of the band and thought "Oh hell no! $1 million says they're a bunch of Campbells!" Sure enough, when i looked them up, the first member's name that came up was a Campbell 🤮
Next you should take a journey to Japan. And try the band called Lovebites and their song Swan Song and try live version from Zepp Diver city 2020. It has a Chopin piano intro, I'm sure you would appreciate it!!
it's spelt "obliviscaris" ;)
Thanks! 😬
Still no epica 😢

Am I allowed to not like this?
You can tell that this violin dude sure wasn’t metalhead. His move on the stage was so awkward
