@@poisonzombii that's fucking unfortunate, I just found out about this band last night and one of my favorite things was the bass. Such a shame for the man to do that.
Lots of musicians have done a hell of a lot worse than Brendan did, and received nowhere near the torch and pitchfork treatment meted out to him by the Australian metal scene. Is Brendan a piece of shit for what he did? Sure. Doesn't detract from the fact that he was, and still is, a beast of a bassist.
Be'lakor is another amazing Aussie band! These two bands have been my fav for years now. Their musical composition along with lyrical content is truly amazing.
I don't think I've heard a bassist contribute more to the overall melody of the song since Geddy Lee. He's not just sitting there doing what the drummer is doing, or playing root-note pedal tones. This guy is awesome.
The drummer isn't buckled in. He is wearing a GoPro camera on a chest harness. You can see the perspective of the chest-GoPro at 9:27 in the original video. Actually, being buckled in would be counter-productive for a drummer since your shoulders need to be able to move freely (unless, of course, you are Joey Jordison and play the drums upside down).
Alex Van Halen might have started that as he did that many years ago in concert. Before Tommy Lee. I saw it live probably 30 years ago. Had it set up where it started flat and would slowly rotate until he was upside down.
I saw Slipknot live when I was in middle school in the early 00's, and seeing Joey play the drums on that spinning pentagram was so freaking unexpected and cool. I actually went to that concert with my mom and she even loved that part.
I was just born when Opeth dropped their greatest albums and I love them all. Ne Obliviscaris gives me hope that they might do the same maybe even more perfects albums in a row and I might actually live through that time. I am so excited.
Someone please request that she analyze Equus! Such an amazing and emotionally driven song! Dedicated to all those who died in the forest fires in Australia.
I like how you pointed out this was late in the set and how much energy they still had. If I have learned anything from going to metal shows, it's that nobody gets tired. Not the crowd, not the band, not the mice under the stage. It's like unlimited energy fills the entire room and feeds everybody. It's really one of my favorite things about live shows. Edit: also yes, some of it is meant to make you feel uncomfortable. One of their longest pieces "Painters of the Tempest" starts off with a large segment that is INCREDIBLY uncomfortable, but the way the song flows and evves beyond that is really astounding and the ending is just.... so sweet.
there is time for being tired after the show. multi day festivals are an even better example of this. day 3: start the day still tired, show starts: energy mode
We need to get you into "Wintersun - Sons of winter and stars live at Sonic Pump studios" I also think you would find it interesting that the Lead vocalist Jari lost around 20 percent of his lung due to tuberculosis. Love hearing your thoughts on these bands that not many others are willing to accept or have trouble appreciating. Kai Hahto the current drummer for Nightwish was the drummer for Wintersun at the time.
Well he still is in wintersun too as far as I know. He haven't just had time to play there recent years... Anyway definitely worth of checking that. Insane drumming, and vocal work as well as guitar playing. I think on a real records Jari was composing and playing all instruments (apart from drums which Kai did, although on seasons record he didn't had time and Jari was just programming those in). If I have understood correctly he has done all the background tracks too, which by itself are already insane (and have been published separately)... Insanely good composer, and vocalist and player. Well they all are, a collection of unbelievable talents in one band...

If you have ever heard Planet X (one of Derek Sherinian's (former Dream Theater keyboardist) 250 projects), they will say their least used time signature is 4/4. Enuff said. At the very least DT have some songs that remain in 4/4 (Pull Me Under, The Silent Man, Hollow Years, I Walk Beside You, etc). These guys actually take the concept of "weird time signatures are the norm in prog" and take it to the logical conclusion
This song is nothing short of a masterpiece. Never heard of them until I ended up at the cradle of filth concert and these guys played before. I didn't see this coming at all but I am so happy that I found them.

To answer the question about Head Banging and playing. Yes and No. Now, to give some context to the answer - some things are harder to play than others - I'll use Drums an example (since I'm a drummer) - but take your basic 4/4 Rock Groove (AC/DC style) I can play that without barely thinking, it's pretty much all muscle memory. So, if I'm playing that, I can head bang, Windmill, gesture, pull faces - pretty much do whatever as I'm not using a lot of conscious effort to play the Beat. Now, if I was playing something that was very mentally taxing and requiring me to 'think' about the hits I'm playing, then I would find it harder to head-bang consciously, There'd probably still be a degree of head-bobbing that is an almost unconscious reaction to listening to/playing music, but not a determined head-bang. And then of course we have to talk about practice and repetition - the more you play your own music, especially live, the more you are going to Head-bang along (assuming you are playing Metal and are getting into it) and the easier it becomes - I've seen George Kollias (Drummer for a band called Nile) Headbanging along whilst playing some 260 BPM Blast Beats, an impossibility for me, but for him (who regularly plays at that tempo), it's obviously 'easy' enough for him to head-bang along. So to conclude, the harder the material for your current skill level that you are playing, the much harder it is to Head-bang and play, but as you progress and get used to it, the easier it becomes (like most things...).
Headbanging whilst playing... So, drummer with long hair here. Too many times with my old band, swallowed my hair... Choking whilst playing through the whole damned song without dropping a beat was always and interesting muscle memory check. Damned punk band too so there was a never a spot to pull the hair out til the end of the flipping song...
If you want to stick to more interesting metal from Australia I want to point you to Be'lakor. Alternatively take a look at Swiss-American Zeal & Ardor. It's avant-garde metal with influences of both black metal and African-American spirituals, truly a unique sound. Oceans of Slumber is also interesting, they're doom metal but their new stuff is quite experimental. On the other side of the ocean you have Thy Catafalque, another avant-garde metal band from Hungary. Or try Myrkur, who alternates her post-black metal with Scandinavian folk (rock), because variety is the spice of life. Btw a violin isn't remotely the weirdest instrument in metal. Mesopotamia Inc uses an accordion and Rivers of Nihil enjoys a saxophone. It's the beauty of metal, if you want to you can mix in literally anything. Honestly though, it's a joy to watch your journey here. Even if you decide to check out none of the above. But I recommend you do :P On the drummer, he's not strapped in. That's a chest mounted drum cam.
In the intro, Dan Presland (drummer) is « running » by alternating his feet from the bass drums to the hi-hat pedals in a 4/4 polyrhythm, which is why you can hear muted hi-hats there
Prog metal is progressive because it doesn't follow the conventions, so it is rife with uncommon song structures, modes, and yes, it often plays with time signatures. A rather extreme example would be The Dance of Eternity, by Dream Theater, well known for having 108 time signatures changes in a 6 minutes song, and not a lot of it in 4/4!
@@jonssgoodlan1433 yeah. Why are you so uptight. A person can like Babymetal and Ne Obliviscaris. I mentioned specifically Babymetal's prog metal song.

In case you are interested in such a thing, Dan Presland, the drummer for Ne Obliviscaris, also has a TH-cam channel which features a studio play through of this song.
First, Haley Reinhart, and now Ne Obliviscaris?! This is a good week. I am so excited for you (and all us lucky hoomans that get to witness you experience this!) Igorrr next, pretty please?
Two years, and this is still the reaction I keep coming back to. How viscerally you feel the music, how unsettled you are, Elizabeth, moves me inside, every time I watch it.
I really hope you find yourself diving back into them someday! I must have missed this reaction when it first came out, but since seeing it 6 months ago, their short but definitely sweet discography has become a go-to for beautiful New England day trip drives, and getting me into a creative space for painting or projects!
This is my go to reaction request, ohhh you are going to be blown away by the musicianship in this live video. and the singing will be something you probably haven't come across before. I am REALLY looking forward to this.
You've made me laugh more in this reaction than any other. I love how curious and studious you are when you listen to new music. Love this one! Thanks!
Forget Not is quickly becoming possibly the best piece of music I've ever heard. The whole first 6 minutes (funny how most modern music doesn't even make it past 4) are just absolute sorrowful brilliance.
@@lMarcusl Oh absolutely. "Forget Not" was my gateway song into the world of NeO. While Plague is my favorite song to hear live, Forget Not is my favorite song overall live or studio. It took until my third time seeing them live to hear it live. It was amazing!! Also the dichotomy between the two haves is superb. My roommate used to not like the song because of how dissimilar the two halves are, but once I listened to the full thing, he realized how the two halves compliment each other so well.
@@u.v.s.5583 ForgetNot paints a picture. There's a certain dichotomy to both halves of the song. You get a lot of sections where Tim is allowed to shine (not to say he doesn't anywhere else on this album or any of their albums for that matter), but the freeness of the instrumental section is very apparent before it ramps into the heavier back half with Dan's blast beats on the kicks. Also if you watched the most recent where she analyzes The Odyssey by Symphony X, she's not averse to long instrumental sections. I'm not disagreeing with you, there certainly are stronger picks from Portal that I could have suggested, but this song is also literally their name. I feel it would be an appropriate listen.

This moment of expression also made me laugh while editing. There were actually a series of these... about 15 seconds long. Could have taken any still. Watching it slow-mo is extra hilarious... which means that would make an excellent Insta post. ::brilliant idea brewing thank you for the inspiration::
You should check out Intra Venus by Ne Obliviscaris. I think it does a much better job of blending the growls with the clean vocals and has a more operatic sound.

I am so happy you are willing to experience new music. And I am so happy you have found ways to make something you are not comfortable with something worth experiencing for others! Namaste!
If you like the duality in vocals, you need to check out Opeth. One of the best commentaries I've seen on Mikael's singing is that he can "Sing like an angel and growl like the devil." He's, also, just a generally good human. I recommend Ghost of Perdition. There's a live version at Red Rocks Amphitheater.

I would love to get her reaction to ANYTHING Periphery. I think the beats in djent music would totally blow her away with all the syncopation in the drums!
To answer your question about hair getting in your face while headbanging. It can get annoying once you get really sweaty throughout the show as your hair I’ll stick to your face, but I do have to say that I don’t think I’ve ever really had to get my eye to much and even if it did you just move it to the side. Usually when headbanging your hair doesn’t even contact your face because by the time it’s about two you’re already pulling your hair back up when your head goes back up.
Popping back in to request you check out EQUUS off their most recent album. It is a musical and emotional masterpiece, and the vocalists have improved so much since the album featured in this video. It also desperately needs more exposure. Here's hoping you see this!
Just discovered your reviews and this is incredible the reality of your reactions. Your knowledge in music and your appreciation in different things. I always get shivers when listening to this song and now it was amplified with your reaction. thank you. really
Sometimes headbanging while playing an instrument actually helps you keep track of time, especially if you're not playing in a normal time signature. And also it looks cool haha. Also you should definitely check out Oathbreaker - 10:56 / Second Son Of R (on Audiotree Live) their vocalist is really something else. Kinda similar to this vocalist in a way, you might get The Ring vibes from her too.
So since you seemed to enjoy this I think a good place to look next for something in the prog/extreme metal scene is the biggest influence on these guys, Opeth. My recommendation is to go with Bleak from their live release "The Roundhouse Tapes". Good to see such genuine impressions and analysis for this type of music since not many people seem to do so!
So amazing to see you review Ne Obliviscaris. One of my favorite metal bands and so glad I got to see them live. I love all of your reviews they are so great, full of energy and enthusiasm.
Xenoyr, the vocalist who does the growls have another band/project called Omega Infinity. They released their first album earlier this year, and it's pretty fantastic. It's pure black metal though, and not prog metal like Ne Obliviscaris.
@@TheSmackofGod Void Metal, lol. Harlequin Forest - th-cam.com/video/0HRett4kOpM/w-d-xo.html A great first Opeth piece, song starts at 1:30ish but there is some funny banter beforehand The Moor - th-cam.com/video/Of-cMd1XHA0/w-d-xo.html A bit heavier and an older piece of theirs with more growls than Harlequin Forest Harvest - th-cam.com/video/oJYepilhlRY/w-d-xo.html A rather chill song with only clean vocals
This band put together everything that I like: extreme prog death metal, with a good balance of clean and guttural vocals. The violin as a main instrument is the icing on the cake. Many death metal band use some this orchestral instruments just as an introduction to some songs and the rest just usual of style. They are just the best band I ever listen to.

He also has a few videos from practices and endurance training for playing. It might be worth having a watch, I've seen a few and they blow my mind with the skill and endurance! The lead singer, Xen, is also the lyricist and he does the art work for the band. I live in Melbourne and once on a packed train I saw him get on at the other end of the carriage, and I can report he looks exactly the same day to day (though I wish it wasn't packed so I could have thanked him in person for the great music they've created) Before NeO, I listened to a lot of Opeth - there's a similar prog metal vibe. Though, where NeO has more black metal vocal vibes Opeth are more Death Metal. Both fantastic bands worth checking out! I've seen you do a couple of Devin Townsend songs (metal god and a fantastic person), I love the Royal Albert Hall versions of Deadhead, Funeral, Bastard and Death of Music. They're more of Devin's wall of sound approach, but all his vocals are on point (despite him being ill at the concert)

One of their longest pieces "Painters of the Tempest" starts off with a large segment that is INCREDIBLY uncomfortable, but the way the song flows and evves beyond that is really astounding and the ending is just.... so sweet.
So much energy, except for the people in the pit near the end of the show lol.
there is time for being tired after the show. multi day festivals are an even better example of this. day 3: start the day still tired, show starts: energy mode

Weird time signatures may be rare in general but I'd say not in prog metal, really.
If anything, normal ones are rare.
Or prog in general
If you have ever heard Planet X (one of Derek Sherinian's (former Dream Theater keyboardist) 250 projects), they will say their least used time signature is 4/4. Enuff said. At the very least DT have some songs that remain in 4/4 (Pull Me Under, The Silent Man, Hollow Years, I Walk Beside You, etc). These guys actually take the concept of "weird time signatures are the norm in prog" and take it to the logical conclusion
Hawkwind: the only 4/4 prog band...
Sumac: the only prog band to use 0/0?

@@matthewgodding777 You must swallow a ton of hair playing punk. It is such a fast-paced genre.
But I recommend you do :P

@@lMarcusl Oh absolutely. "Forget Not" was my gateway song into the world of NeO. While Plague is my favorite song to hear live, Forget Not is my favorite song overall live or studio. It took until my third time seeing them live to hear it live. It was amazing!!

Anything from portal of i is an utter masterpiece. Definitely their best album.

To me Forget not is highly overrated. Portal of I contains several much stronger songs than that. The last song, Of Petrichor... is one of them
@@u.v.s.5583 ForgetNot paints a picture.

Harlequin Forest - th-cam.com/video/0HRett4kOpM/w-d-xo.html A great first Opeth piece, song starts at 1:30ish but there is some funny banter beforehand
The Moor - th-cam.com/video/Of-cMd1XHA0/w-d-xo.html A bit heavier and an older piece of theirs with more growls than Harlequin Forest

He also has a few videos from practices and endurance training for playing. It might be worth having a watch, I've seen a few and they blow my mind with the skill and endurance!
The lead singer, Xen, is also the lyricist and he does the art work for the band. I live in Melbourne and once on a packed train I saw him get on at the other end of the carriage, and I can report he looks exactly the same day to day (though I wish it wasn't packed so I could have thanked him in person for the great music they've created)
Before NeO, I listened to a lot of Opeth - there's a similar prog metal vibe.
You don't pick five-four. Five-four picks you. Edit: never felt hair slapping on my face as anything harsh. Actually I found it rather comfortable.
😱 yessss! So happy to see a react video to any Ne Obliviscaris song.
They put on an amazing live show!!
I don't think I've ever seen you do a review where you say: "Wow, that was *totally what I expected!*" lol.
Been waiting for this one for certain, love this band. Saw them in Sydney and they are every bit as good as this video indicates.
Ne obliviscaris: My favorite band
Devin townsend: favorite artist
Dimash: favorite singer
Nightwish: favorite female band.
Tool: my introduction into prog metal
It's complete... almost.
I can only recommand ayreon day three pain the theatral equation.
Also, a big compliment. With your smile I know you look much younger then your real age I would guess. Don't search anything behind that.
Either Pain or Trauma. I'd *love* a Trauma reaction
@@moira4707 btw I missed her videos on ayreon. I just have to watch one more and then I've watched all three.
Add Opeth and you’ll be set :)
@@solarflare4345 She has done it. Just as ayreon. Btw, I'm wearing a shirt of Opeth at the moment. :D
NeO is my 2nd fave band behind nightwish so thank you so much for reviewing this. I also love wardruna and heilung you have hit so many of the bands that I really like
Pyrrhic by this band has one of the best moments ever in music.
Dude that is FACTS
That outro is the most beautiful thing they've written, tied between that and the soft interlude-outro in Upon the Tongue of Elegance off their EP. Unfortunately the latter isnt so well known
@@VermilionGates looks like we will fight for some chicken... I meant the battle between the violin and guitar right in the middle
@@VermilionGates yeah, unfortunately I still haven’t been able to get a hand on the EPs. Really looking forward to it tho
@@MagicarpOFFICIAL Of the 6 Ep songs I'd say 4 should have been on an album. Great quality, do reccomend
Never listened this band ever before. They are so good. The drummer is a machine! I’m in awe
