Yeah I'm fed up with their "cramming christianity into EVERYTHING where it doesn't fit". I came here for the reaction to the music and I'm getting a lyric analysis that is to me always ruined by them forcing god into every sentence... Like at the beginning where Sori commented on atheists defining themselves as such so they must be connected to god FACE PALM. I get it that you react to lyrics, because they are controversial a lot, but please at least do a proper analysis if you have to, otherwise stick to the music; also learn to distinguish from lyrics that are there just to fill the vocals and actual poetry; metal tends to have TONS of lyrics nobody cares about, not even the band...
The only reason I still watch these is because of the awesome songs that are being chosen and because Sori has a good taste.
They misrepresent so many things. Like how nihilism preaches worthlessness. It doesn't. It just says there's no absolute morality or reason to life. You can still life an incredibly meaningful life just not with divine given reason.
mormacil Agreed. I stand behind my claim that they lack philosophical knowledge as they are trying so hard with the lyrical analysis. I say, if you like analyzing literature content, then you SHOULD educate yourself in philosophy and history related to the content AT MINIMUM to understand it.

Amazing band
One of the reasons I love folk metal, viking metal and black metal so much is how much is celebrates the beauty of our world. This is a relatively simple song, but its lyrics and music speak with the voice of a world, filled with beauty but also with great pain and sadness. A true masterpiece of a song. 10/10. This is the song you show to people who think black metal is all ugly and satanic. It is not. Black metal is as deep and complex as any other genre of metal.
You know what else evokes similar emotions? Wintersun-Loneliness (Winter).
Agalloch is still definitely black metal. You can deny it if you want, but its still black metal. Its not 100% black metal of course. Its also doom metal, folk metal and even some post metal thrown in there (which is why I guess people drew correlations between them and Deafhaven). Alot of Emperor is not ugly. No, I'm sorry but I can't agree with you on this one. To much evidence to the contrary.

you probably didn't listen gallowbraid. in expressing evilness, darkness and coldness with a bit of melancholy black metal works way better. Despair, depression is for doom metal. Nothing is soul crushing like despair or grief, and it works better with doom metal. Black was allways about negative, destructive things and emotions

This album is an untouchable masterpiece. Probably the best post black metal album ever. But it's not 'kvlt' at all. It's actually folk metal with black metal influences. Some similar albums are Sunbather by Deafheaven and Two Hunters by Wolves in the throne room.
Lyrical themes deal with personal loss and nature.

having heard Deafhaven (as much as I could stomach without wanting to run screaming from the room) I can say there is almost no similarities between them and Agalloch. Not sure about Wolves in the Throne Room, I want to say they are in that same genre space as Deafhaven but I don't want to speak out of turn. Agalloch to me has much more in common with Windir and other black metal acts that lean heavily on folk influences. This song is a masterpiece.
Yea. Deafhaven not really. If you want similar, try Falls of Rauros, Gallowbraid, Saor, Panopticon, October Falls, some of the first Woods of Ypres albums.

I don't get this view, honestly. What's so bad about life not having purpose? I never tried to fill my life with meaning, it's just as meaningless as ever. I just figured, since this life is all I have, might as well have a good time and make other people have a good time. Find something I like doing and keep doing that. I don't understand why people waste their lives worrying about life not having purpose. We're all gonna die, who knows when, why not spend that indefinite and insignificant amount of time enjoying it? Why waste it?

To address your first point (and I truly hope you see this) about atheists "defining" themselves as such I think shows a serious misunderstanding of what it's like to be an atheist for most of us. You used the example of not believing in fairies but that doesn't work because not believing in fairies is the standard. There are no shrines to fairies scattered all over cities, you weren't raised to believe in fairies and had to make a conscious realisation to step away from that without knowing how it would affect your family who raised you to believe in these fairies and believe that you are dooming yourself to eternal damnation by not believing in them... The landscape is changing but many atheists had to fight a serious uphill battle to get to where they are today and still feel a need to assert and comfort one another that "this is ok" because they've been raised in an environment that demonizes their way of life.

Interesting story, I feel like not believing in God, church, miracles is the new norm in Europe, where I am from. I believe reason why Black Metal is so assertively anti-Christian, because in most minds Christ is a fictional character. My own experience has been such that people do not understand why I go to church and pray every sunday. Social currents change don't they ? :D
The "new" norm maybe (although even that depends on where you are - for example it certainly isn't in Poland or in certain states of the US). It's possible that many in the current generation may not have to deal with this to the same extent but I feel rather confident in saying that, for many adult atheists right now, this is a pretty fair representation of what many went through.
It's difficult coming to terms with the fact that some people you care about will suddenly see you in a lesser light due to this fact and there are some people you just outright try and hide it from for as long as possible for this very reason.
Yes. Religion was the first. Like Hitchens said, it was our first attempt at philosophy, our first attempt at science, at understanding the world we live in, our first attempt at morality. So it had a huge role in shaping history and it does make sense to define yourself in opposition to it because people understand what it means to be part of it. I think there has never been any evidence for the supernatural but I have no problem with Christians who are good people. I really like Jordan Peterson too, I agree with him on prob 95% of issues, just not this one.
You make a great point here, as I was also pretty turned off by the whole "fairy" example as well.
I think the main problem with Atheism is that it is often misunderstood solely as a belief that God does not exist. I understand that that is literally what Atheism translates to, but unfortunately there is a very broad spectrum of people that identify as Atheists mistakenly. There are the Atheists that literally believe that no God of any sort exists due to there being no scientific evidence, but unfortunately most of them are very "greater than thou"/condescending towards anyone believing any religion and would quickly take away everyone's right to religion in a very authoritarian way if they could. However, I believe an overwhelming majority of Atheists aren't such by the literal definition. For example, a lot of Atheists are probably more Agnostic while being against any organized religion and their dogmatic nature, simply believing there is a God or higher power (or MAYBE there is) that no organized religion has any sort of monopoly on.
The TL:DR version is that even though Atheism literally means "the belief that a God(s) does/do not exist", an overwhelming majority of Atheists don't feel this way exactly and really just do not adhere to believing any of the religions of the world "have it right", and believe the truth of a higher being or power can never be fully understood or realized by any human.
If somebody defines themself as an atheist it means they don't have belief in *any* gods. It also often means they don't belive in the supernatural in general, altho not always. I think it's a bit self centered to assume these people define themselves by disbelief in just YOUR particular God. To me atheism seems to be the default position and not the other way around. You don't belive in Zeus by default either.

Atheism is the belief there is no god or supreme being. It has inherently nothing to do with spirituality or other beliefs in supernatural beings. One could be an atheist and believe the Tuatha are real. It's unlikely as most vocal atheist are pro science and refuse anything to unscientific but the label atheist is purely based on being sure there is no god.
Pantheism is not Atheism. Pantheism is adorate God by seeing and worship God´s creation: Fire, Water, Wood, Stone, Wind. Everything is God, so God is not dead. God is here and has been always here, regardless your own personal Messiah (Jesus, Jehova, Krishna, Buddha, etc.)
@@mormacil one thing. Atheist does not mean being SURE there is no god, it means that you lack belief in god, or in detail it is the negation of theism which is that you have some belief in god. Now being sure about it means you are a gnostic atheist, while most of atheists are agnostic atheists, which means we are still open to disscussion, evidence, etc, i.e. we are still scientifically sceptical of our philosophies regarding lack of belief in god. Thats all :)

The poet (John Haughm) doesn't specify which God he's talking about. He uses a very nebulous definition, 'if xyz is what you call god, then god is not dead' which is quite vague and can be applied to all gods, and also no god. Further, just defining something which most definitely exists, such as mountains and trees and god, and claiming that god exists is meaningless. The god of the scriptures has still not been demonstrated to exist.
Why atheists have to claim to be so out in public? Because believers have been drowning out our voices.
Gee I don't know man, last time checked there were no TV channels dedicated to Atheism, No mega churches preaching Atheism, no Atheist songs playing loudly on speakers when you go out on the street, no Atheist coming door to door at odd hours to disturb you. Do the math.

John Haughm is the mastermind of Agalloch, who has since sadly parted ways. But he now has another group Pillorian that is quite amazing as well. He would probably be willing to talk with you guys...Caught them on tour with Wolves In the Throne Room last year. You definitely need to check out Wolves... I Will Lay down my Bones Amongst the Rocks and Roots is majestic! They hone the wilderness aesthetic like Agalloch.

I'm not sure if it's really fair to say Haughm is the only mastermind. Anderson, Walton and Dekker are just as important to the songs' atmospheric feeling that convey the message John is trying to get across. They were all brilliant in their own ways. Agalloch was more of synergistic structure than a figurehead thing.

This was my recommendation in the trve kvlt group and has been a favourite of mine for years but watching Sori experience that for the first time, eyes closed and feeling the music, is the closest I've gotten to reliving that moment where I first discovered it myself. Chills all over.

What if the 'Pale Companion' is Depression, and this song is about a man trying to find an out to his depression via God and Nature, but he kills himself in the end because he can never fully defeat his 'Pale Companion'.
Kind of how I have always felt about this song. I find something strangely cathartic about it.

Man, this is such an important song for me. This is a song that opened a lot of avenues of different types of music for me. It was the first song that had a black metal influence that really got me interested in furthering my discovery of other bands like this. The sense of melody they use is just so enticing and they were also a band that experimented with their sound yet you could still identify it as an Agalloch song.
It’s a shame that John and the rest of the band couldn’t see eye to eye anymore but it looks like we’re getting two new (and very different!) bands from Agalloch’s ashes with Pillorian and Khorada. The metal media has really been praising the Khorada album. I’m really looking forward to checking that band out

The reason why atheists or agnostics define themselves as such is because it's a way of saying we exist and can be morally grounded and inclusive. The reason why the topic of God comes up is because having faith is often brought up as the moral compass. Because of the majority/minority differences in numbers we are forced to have religion shoved in our faces often, through laws that favor one specific religion over the others or lack of religion. It affects us all even when we don't believe in a deity because a majority do believe and hold us to litmus tests in different settings while trying to claim moral superiority. So just like people say black lives also matter or LGBTQ deserves to be treated like the rest of us, people who aren't faith based feel they have to also raise awareness that we are human and deserve social and civil equality as well.

Beautiful song. There are various points I want to lay to contrast your opinion. First, when Sori says that nature is not God but its proxy, the Aztecs have it solved. They have a figure called Moyocoyatzin, which means "the one that created himself". In this view, God is the universe so god, when he created himself, created the universe. In this sense, God is everything that is, including human beings. Second point. When you guys says that upon the realization that God does not exist as imagined (as an external entity), humans feel empty. The same happens when we as kids realize that Santa does not exist, but it helps us grow and mature because we realize that the love of our parents is Santa, so instead of worshiping a non-existing being, we develop a deeper love for the ones that care of us, and we pay it forward. Well, that exactly is what Nietzche is aiming for: our mind sets must evolve until humans realize that we don't need religion to tell us what to do 'cause the universe (trees, galaxies, neutrinos, us) has the knowledge. We only need to discover its laws and develop our mind sets accordingly.
Sori, funny you mentioned about how inspiring this band is, I did about four of my most epic pieces of art when I discovered this band, especially this album. I just got lost for about a week of indulging in their music in my studio.

This review and discussion made my evening. I discovered Agalloch about 5 years ago and became enthralled with their mastery of emotional soundscapes. A single song, like this one, can pull out so many emotions. A true sonic journey. This type of metal, and these musicians in Agalloch, pull inspiration from a pagan, pre-Christian world, and point of view, hence the focus on trees, landscapes, seasons and nature in their music. However, the search and longing for God, and a meaning to life are so apparent to me in this music. Just because one may not believe in the one True God, doesn't mean that He cant work through them... this art, this song, is testament to this. At least for me. Thank you both for sharing this song with us.

Congratulations, you two are now part of a select group of humans who have heard the best song ever composed! You are right about the nature worship, Agalloch has this theme of a pagan, "heathen" pantheism in many songs. The pale companion is simply death, I don't think it has anything to do with Jesus. One of the main themes of the album is death, how everything is growing colder and is destined to die due to entropy, "the great cold death of the Earth" and, eventually, the universe. BTW, this album is very atmospheric, amazing to listen to on a dark winter day, while snowing heavily.
If you could do another Agalloch song from their other grade 10 album Ashes Against the Grain, I suggest Limbs, but really any song from The Mantle and Ashes is amazing. Also, there is no God, but you guys are still pretty cool.
You cant prove there is no God anymore than you can prove there is one. And no it doesnt have to be the Christian God.

We are always destroying the Earth or each other, but know He loves you, and that you are saved by Grace, through faith, not by works. Just saying. You should definitely check out Aquilus, somewhat similar atmospheric epic metal stuff like this and with great lyrics as well that I'd love to see breakdown of. Maybe either "Loss" or "Nihil", would be really amazing to see.
What you said about "being patient about developing their music" is really nice to hear, since being patient enough to think like that as a listener tells that you can appreciate it and understand the subtle progressions since when it's about creating atmospherics, you can't be too hasty ^^

Tsujigiri AQUILUS YEESSSSS. The metalstorm community loved that album when it came out AND WITH GOOD REASON smokefall is another beautiful song from that album I hope they get a chance to hear this incredibly talented 1 man band reminds me of falkenbach in that sense

I love Agalloch, and mainly this song, I love how the part around 12.20(on thsi video) seems like a running clock, like the passage of time. For someone in search of a life meaning the perception of the passage of time while being unable to achieve it can be pretty violent.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love you guys!! Agalloch has been one of my favorite bands for 15 years and this is one of their best songs. they subscribe to the idea of "pantheism" which is the belief that evrything, in it's own way, is god. they (and i) see aspects of the greater god in everything, working harmoniously. and sori, props for taking the lead on this reaction.
Well shit, finally got to the end...and I was so wrong.
Despite all the times I requested it, I was so sure Vin wasn't gonna like it, that he'd complain about the repetition in the slow buildups, where they play the same stuff for a bit and then add another layer on top (that break in the middle), or just of it being simple, aside from having those layers... Shit, don't even know what I thought, I was just sure he wouldn't like it, that simply the duration would be too much, haha.
Considering how you guys said yourselves that this would "never" have happened just by requests, I don't think I'm gonna bother requesting another of their songs, but considering you enjoyed it, maybe you'll want to get back to Agalloch yourselves, and on the bright side, they have smaller songs! They also have bigger ones, and more "raw" and "black metal" sounding ones, but yeah, there's some great shorter ones..2 of my favourites are only 6 minutes long, hehe.
Many are pretty short on the lyrics side though.. which for me is fine, because what I love about Agalloch is they can create these depressingly beautiful landscapes with their instrumentation, so a few lines of lyrics are more than enough for me. But yeah, if you do ever wanna give them another listen, just ask your friends in the Alliance, I'm sure they'll point you in the right direction, maybe another song from this album, or something from Ashes Against the Grain which is also great.
Considering Vin's reaction to Opeth , I tought he would not like this too. I'm not sure I get it hahaha :P

You make some interesting points about how atheists define themselves, however I think there is a spectrum of atheism that ranges from loud and militant to simple lack of belief. Believe me, if I could honestly, truly convince myself there was a God and my belief in him/her/it was more than a farce, I would jump teams pretty quick. Judeo-Christian music (old music), art, architecture, and certain values are beautiful. I just simply don't and cannot believe.

Oh, Agalloch. I had forgotten about this band and this is probably the best possible pick from them, aside from Our Fortress Is Burning.... Hopefully their next pick is Moonsorrow's Pimea :).

On the subject of Edgar Allen Poe..... You should give Ahab's album "The Giant" a listen. It's an adaptation of Poe's "The Narrative Of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket" and an incredible work of Progressive Doom Metal.
Cole Jordan I actually have heard some of Ahab's work! I'll have to look into the Giants lyrics as well as Poes work you mentioned. And if you like Doom metal as such, Bells Witch is another good band I'm sure you may know.
It is a song basically told from the perspective of a man who is dead. This man sought God despite what culture says, ie god is dead, he found the closest thing to it in nature. Overwhelmed, he made a prayer or cast a spell by sacrificing himself, from his throat and into the river, in hopes that God might make the world a better place.
