As soon as I saw Marble Zone, my next words were “Wow, you guys must suck at Sonic 1!” Then I saw Eggmanland at #3 and Scrambled Egg Zone as an honorable mention. I am convinced they never played Sonic Unleashed or Sonic 2 on the Master System.
Sonic 2 on game gear is just the hardest game in the series like the first boss is harder than every level in the classic sonic quadrilogy so scrambled egg was legitimately made me want to rip my hair out

+AXHP Mad Space mostly was hard because the level was just broken. The camera didn't work properly, the game often would constantly shift your control direction when you were on the underside of a planetoid, and I remember one time a chaos shard was impossibly out of reach that I had to restart the level.
Eggmanland was the hardest I've ever encountered. Took 50 lives. Then a fight with eggman and then 2 fights with Dark Gaia. Made finishing the game a memorable accomplishment.
Basically one of the reason why unleashed is my favorite sonic game. It was actually a huge achievement to beat eggmanland and dark gaia and finally... after it all... even skyscraper scamper... I get awarded a song by one of my favorite bands!
Scrap Brain Zone was so much fun :) I really liked that zone. Marble Zone is not hard, it just takes patience. It was only hard because at the time, it was our first experience with the mechanics of Sonic.

That Carnival Nights Zone from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 pissed me off so much because of that section where Sonic has to create enough momentum to get under the bouncing cylinder by constantly jumping on it. If you had Tails as a CPU then that part is virtually impossible.

Pretty good list. I'd remove Metallic Madness (CD is so easy lol), replace Marble with Sandopolis, and switch Eggmanland with Labyrinth. But DUDE Chaos Angel was a pain, glad that was included.
Final Foretress - Team Dark. It's long as fuck, has some segements where the contol really fucks you, has WAAAAY too many enemies and IS TOO FUCKING LONG
Realistically no but in fairness it is a sizeable difficulty spike from Green Hill. I mean you go from a level that you can blast through at high speed to a much more precise and patience platformer with lava in it. That's rough for the newer player.

Scrap Brain Zone on Sonic 1 was a lot harder than Marble Zone. not sure why they ranked Marble Zone as being harder. For me the hardest levels from each of the Genesis Sonic games are, Sonic 1 - Scrap Brain Zone Sonic 2 - Metropolis Zone Sonic 3 - Carnival Night Zone Sonic & Knuckles - Sandopolis Zone
Carnival Night is long, but not hard, imo. I can't think what the hardest level in that game is, but then again, I have been playing it for a long time... The only thing is - I am currently stuck on the final boss in that game. I am not a big fan of it... Yeah, call me crazy. I know a lot of people really enjoy the Big Arms boss, but for me it is really annoying. I must have lost 20 lives trying to beat it (burned thru all of my continues) and still haven't beaten it yet. Yes, back in the day I had beaten it as Knuckles in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but as Sonic (& Tails - but Sonic only for that boss) right now (it's been awhile since I had played the game) I need to play the entire Launch Base Zone over again. What's worse is that I had gotten a Chaos Emerald in LBZ Act 1 (my 5th), but because I wasn't able to beat the final boss and clear LBZ, the game did not record my 5th Chaos Emerald - it only says I have 4. Then when I went back in to the Giant Ring where I had originally gotten that 5th Chaos Emerald in Launch Base 1, it wasn't there anymore... As far as Sonic & Knuckles, I would say that the most difficult level for me would be Sandopolis Act 2 (the long level with the ghosts and the light switches, and the big boss in which you uncover and then go back and hit the robot's exposed skeleton).
I think I would have put Metropolis Zone a bit higher. Enemy placement, and those crabs are a royal pain to hit their weak points without taking damage in the process were what gave me the most trouble with that level. Definitely leagues ahead of Marble Zone in terms of difficult at least.
I don't think Scrap Brain Zone is terribly hard. A lot of the platforming is actually simple, but I think the environment, music, platform animations, and the pressure to not get a Game Over after making it so far makes it feel harder.
Sonic The Hedgehog I'm not sure if its only on the remake or they accidentally put it down but I was going high up and I fell down in act 1 found a checkpoint and fell off the side u have to explore the entire place
You know how with some games you beat as a kid but then return later wondering how you beat it before when you were younger? This was one of those games for me.
Eggmanland: Wii/PS2: Hmm! Good level design, and is challenging but not too hard as to not scare away younger fans! Xbox360/PS3: OMG WTF? QUICKTIME EVENTS? HOLY SHIT THIS US SI DAMN HARD AND LONG OMFGGGG
Most difficult part in a Sonic game for me is the final boss in Sonic 2. No rings, and then you must fight metal Sonic and Robotnic. It's not so bad with Sonic, but with Knuckles it becomes a nightmare seeing as he can't jump as high as Sonic. Best thing to do is to bring a second player, make him attack the boss while you just stay out of the way.
I remember my clusin was playing sonic 2 and I was playing as tails and when he kept dying i called him a loser but then i realized who was playing as tails lol
Labyrinth zone belongs at #1, because of that section where you're FORCED to move. That bubble you needed? It's off-screen now and you don't have enough time to get to the next one.
Labyrinth zone? That's what you think is the hardest sonic level? Labyrinth zone wasn't even that hard, when you get it through your head not to rush through like a mad hedgehog. I got through that zone aged 8, it took me ages to beat the Sky Sanctuary zone ages 13. I think people have based this list based off childhood experiences and not on if the level is hard. Labyrinth zone is a hard level, but hardly the hardest sonic level.
As a non-owner of Sonic 2, the one that gave me the most grief was Metropolis. My friends had it, so I could only play it during visits. I made it to Metropolis about 4 or 5 times, and I finally passed it, only to die quickly in the very next. Sky Chase or Wing Fortress? It's been about 20 years since I played it, but the memories are very fond.

Scrap brain 3 is one of the hardest levels IMO (assuming no shortcut). It combines precision platforming, patient traversing to avoid all sorts of gotchas, and scrambling for air because the bubbles don't refresh as often. That should be the hardest level simply because of how easy it is to die... and the urge to panic and make a mistake because of air and then die...
Considering that this was made before Sonic Mania, I think a new list could include Titanic Monarch Zone 2 and Oil Ocean Zone 2, the latter mainly because of the boss.
What about the egg fleet stage, second act on sonic heroes? that level was downright insane with it's bullshit. Playing it as team dark is almost dark souls level of crazy

I agree. I didn't think it was bad. I thought it was just difficult. After hearing people discuss bad controls, I agree that Sonic had issue being controlled but even if it was improved, it would barely help the difficulty. Difficulty shouldn't equal bad mechanics though.

The last level of the Labyrinth Zone in the first game is pure hell. The fight at the end to avoid drowning and arrows shooting at you is the worst. Except for Sonic and Knuckles Mushroom Hill Zone when you get trapped in a endless loop.
For me the hard part about metropolis zone isn’t the plat forming, it’s actually pretty fun, it’s that the same two annoying enemies spawn over and over again, the enemy with the homing blades, and the enemy that explodes after shooting in 5 directions, other than that, it’s pretty easy. (I beat it 2nd try on phone)
@@jaxthewolf4572 except it's not challenge it all. You'll only get hit if you blindly rush through the stage. Even as a kid I never found it difficult. I had more trouble with Spring Yard Zone.
I was especially thinking about the Metropolis Zone, Sandopolis Zone and Death Egg Zone. That said, those levels are among my favourites. One level I actually found difficult was level 2 on Sonic Spinball.
AJ Gaming I lost my copy and that port had labyrinth zone in slow motion so it was twice as annoying as the genesis version especially if you got hit and not once did I ever see act 3 of it until I played the original which was wayyy easier

Pretty good list. I'd remove Metallic Madness (CD is so easy lol), replace Marble with Sandopolis, and switch Eggmanland with Labyrinth. But DUDE Chaos Angel was a pain, glad that was included.

Carnival Night is long, but not hard, imo. I can't think what the hardest level in that game is, but then again, I have been playing it for a long time... The only thing is - I am currently stuck on the final boss in that game. I am not a big fan of it... Yeah, call me crazy. I know a lot of people really enjoy the Big Arms boss, but for me it is really annoying. I must have lost 20 lives trying to beat it (burned thru all of my continues) and still haven't beaten it yet. Yes, back in the day I had beaten it as Knuckles in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but as Sonic (& Tails - but Sonic only for that boss) right now (it's been awhile since I had played the game) I need to play the entire Launch Base Zone over again. What's worse is that I had gotten a Chaos Emerald in LBZ Act 1 (my 5th), but because I wasn't able to beat the final boss and clear LBZ, the game did not record my 5th Chaos Emerald - it only says I have 4. Then when I went back in to the Giant Ring where I had originally gotten that 5th Chaos Emerald in Launch Base 1, it wasn't there anymore...
As far as Sonic & Knuckles, I would say that the most difficult level for me would be Sandopolis Act 2 (the long level with the ghosts and the light switches, and the big boss in which you uncover and then go back and hit the robot's exposed skeleton).

I think I would have put Metropolis Zone a bit higher. Enemy placement, and those crabs are a royal pain to hit their weak points without taking damage in the process were what gave me the most trouble with that level. Definitely leagues ahead of Marble Zone in terms of difficult at least.

I don't think Scrap Brain Zone is terribly hard. A lot of the platforming is actually simple, but I think the environment, music, platform animations, and the pressure to not get a Game Over after making it so far makes it feel harder.

Most difficult part in a Sonic game for me is the final boss in Sonic 2. No rings, and then you must fight metal Sonic and Robotnic. It's not so bad with Sonic, but with Knuckles it becomes a nightmare seeing as he can't jump as high as Sonic. Best thing to do is to bring a second player, make him attack the boss while you just stay out of the way.
try it with 3 characters its really easy ( on sonic heroes emulator thing) it took a lot of practice though.

Labyrinth zone? That's what you think is the hardest sonic level? Labyrinth zone wasn't even that hard, when you get it through your head not to rush through like a mad hedgehog. I got through that zone aged 8, it took me ages to beat the Sky Sanctuary zone ages 13.
I think people have based this list based off childhood experiences and not on if the level is hard. Labyrinth zone is a hard level, but hardly the hardest sonic level.

As a non-owner of Sonic 2, the one that gave me the most grief was Metropolis. My friends had it, so I could only play it during visits. I made it to Metropolis about 4 or 5 times, and I finally passed it, only to die quickly in the very next. Sky Chase or Wing Fortress? It's been about 20 years since I played it, but the memories are very fond.

Scrap brain 3 is one of the hardest levels IMO (assuming no shortcut). It combines precision platforming, patient traversing to avoid all sorts of gotchas, and scrambling for air because the bubbles don't refresh as often. That should be the hardest level simply because of how easy it is to die... and the urge to panic and make a mistake because of air and then die...

I agree. I didn't think it was bad. I thought it was just difficult. After hearing people discuss bad controls, I agree that Sonic had issue being controlled but even if it was improved, it would barely help the difficulty. Difficulty shouldn't equal bad mechanics though.

The last level of the Labyrinth Zone in the first game is pure hell. The fight at the end to avoid drowning and arrows shooting at you is the worst. Except for Sonic and Knuckles Mushroom Hill Zone when you get trapped in a endless loop.

For me the hard part about metropolis zone isn’t the plat forming, it’s actually pretty fun, it’s that the same two annoying enemies spawn over and over again, the enemy with the homing blades, and the enemy that explodes after shooting in 5 directions, other than that, it’s pretty easy. (I beat it 2nd try on phone)
