Jirard: " Sonic will forget about these characters and will never talk about them again." Sonic Generations opening *mentioning Secret Rings & Black Knight*
And again Sonic Generation. He mentions it after beating Green Hill the first time and freeing Tails. "No stranger than rescuing genies magic story books or, saving aliens in a interstellar amusement parks."
"not mentioning these events again" flash forward to a Sonic Generations "No Stranger than saving Genies from Magic books or aliens from Interstellar amusement park"
I kinda liked Black Knight as a kid, honestly. Not played it in years and my Wii doesn't even work anymore, so I can't replay it and see if it's actually as bad as people say, unfortunately.
the logic of sonic goes like this. I do good... no one remembers. (colors, generations, adventure one, adventure 2, original genesis trilogy, sonic cd, advance trilogy) I do bad... no one forgets (sonic boom: rol, sonic '06, sonic and the secret rings, sonic and the black knight, sonic r, shadow the hedgehog)
The story, music, and visuals were neat, but I hate the gameplay and controls with a passion. And for me, a game that fails at that fails entirely. If they remade it with mechanics and controls closer to something like Unleashed's day stages, I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.
I only thought it was okay... it wasn’t bad, but it definitely wasn’t good. SatBK was one of the first sonic games I got, and I loved it, but the more I go back and play it or even watch gameplay, I notice that it just doesn’t fit well with sonic. Sure his attitude is, well... well it’s sonic, but the rest of it isn’t. It would be fine if it was it’s own thing, but people mainly don’t like it because it’s a sonic game... and motion controls
You say that Sonic will never say anything about this again, yet there is that Sonic generations cutscene, where sonic says "or rescuing genies in story books." Just, a thought.
It's part of the videogame story telling where all character development reset to zero and you never have any major plot involving those characters or what happened again in the series. Of course I disagree with this being an entirely bad thing since E101 Gamma was awesome. shadow's would have been too if they left him alone, but the decided he was the exception and gave him character development to write him back into the series.
The storybook series is cannon, the bad future Stardust Speedway is cannon (implying Sonic failed), Sonic 06 is cannon again, but Sonic Rush and Rush Adventure are also cannon... Geez, when did the Sonic timeline become such a cluster f@#k?
I personally liked Sonic and the Secret Rings and sometimes go back to play it. I am generally able to control him pretty well too after coming back 4 years after last playing the game
This game was a big part of my childhood, and I played the hell out of the party mode. I totally forgot this game even had it until you mentioned it, and now I have a ton of memories of ACTUALLY ENJOYING the whole game, party mode and all. To be fair, at the time I thought that the story in Sonic games was the most important part. Ah, the wonders of childhood innocence...
This was actually one of my favorite Sonic games of all time. I didn't play all of them, granted. Sonic CD still eludes me, but I've never thought of most of the issues in this game you have as actual problems with the game. When I was bad at using the controls, I played until I got better or got better equipped, then the game was awesome. I never had a problem using the Wii remote in the ways asked and once you get the hang of it and memorize a stage, you can style and show off and jump through huge sections of the stages that you'd normally have to proceed slowly through. I STILL listen to this game's music. I think it's amazing. Our views differ drastically and that's cool, but I thought this game was a fantastic time.
NoctilioGames How can Sonic CD elude you?! Hunt that game down and play it! It's one of Sonic's shining moments, introducing both Metal Sonic and the figure eight peel out. The special stages are quite unique as well, much different then the usual "collect x number of rings".
2:57 Actually, despite the popular opinion, I really enjoyed playing Sonic and the Secret Rings and Black Knight. Were they hard? Yes. Were the controls questionable? Maybe. Do these two things make a game bad? Not in my book. Am I right in my opinion based on everyone else's standards? I don't know and I don't care.
I'd say Black Knight was a good game. Secret Rings tried sooo hard, and i love it for that. But my *god* the controls are awful. I'll never hate the game, but I sure do hate playing it
I totally agree. I've just completed this game and it's not that hard to control as many people make it out to be. I like challenge and I've almost never felt frustrated with all the missions I played (all I could unlock)
I remember playing this when I was still under 10 years old. I really liked it, but of course, my standards were lower than the earth core. I honestly have no bad memories of it, but again, now that I'm older, I can understand why it may not be as good as I thought it was then.
"Can we listen to some right now?" *7 Rings in Hand plays* "Oh god dang it! I should have been more specific! Play something else, anything!" *Song singing the same words "Sonic Boom" three or four times in a row plays* "That's better."
To be fair, I can see why it can be seen bad. It's a shame that it got overused, but as a song, it's decent. I prefer the Evil Foundry theme. Sonic and the Black Knight is slightly better overall imo.
Positives: great artwork on the cutscenes, good music, good graphics for a wii game, great theming on the levels. Negatives: Everything Else. I forgot about the story telling gem of Sonic wishing for a supply of napkins. Best part of the game.
I know this comment is old but its kinda wild how much you push through bad controls to play games as a kid. I love monster hunter but mh3u was on the 3ds and that was hard as hell to control. There are literally memes about the "claw grip".
07:54 1) Mario doesnt "grows as a character" either. Both of these characters are a brand thus changing their character or adding backstory will just end up becoming a mess. 2) This game is referred to by Sonic in a conversation with Tails in sonic generations (yes, i know what you actually meant, but hey: fun fact :) )
When he was talking about themed months, I was like "EYYYYY! Sonic month!" Then he was like "It's Disappointing Games Month!" And then I was like "... EYYYYYY! Sonic month!!!!"
The highest compliments I see for this game are things like “it wasn’t the worst game ever” and “I remember not hating it”. Let that demonstrate the quality of this game
I fucking loved Sonic and the Secret Rings. I thought it was great. Now that Ive grown up and see the bad things about this game. The story the gameplay.... the controls.... but this game holds a special place in my heart. i always have fun playing it coming back to it. Personally this game is pretty ok to me atleast.
8:05 Despite being a spin-off game, Sonic and the Secret Rings is referenced in Sonic Generations when Sonic is pointing out to Tails that their current predicament is "no stranger than rescuing genies in magic books."
i wish it was re relased on pc tho we could do so much and play with better and sonic and the secret rigns on pc too since they need to be saved and the only way is a pc port with updated controls
"...Never mentioning these events again.." Ah-hem, Uh, Sonic Generations? "No stranger than rescuing Genies and magic books or saving aliens in an interstellar amusement park..."
As someone named Brian, allow me to say you are an inspiration to me and I truly appreciate your entertaining videos. Your show is 'Appointment Viewing' for me, and I am proud to say it.
It's because this game was made that sonic 06 is the way it is, because the wii needed a game Sega split the team into two leaving half to make 06 and the other to make secret rings
Sonic and The Secret Rings was actually my first favorite game. I had a lot of fun as a child completing this game. I know it's not perfect and has a lot of errors, but my videogame life start with Wii Games (Especially Mario and Sonic Games). So is understandable.
we need it on pc i would love for it to be ported so the flaws will be gone about the controller the game was cheap yes but it was hard to get a copy now adays i would snag one when i see it at the store once but couldnt keep it
Although there was plenty of jank involving the level obstacles, I felt like the basic movement and dash attack worked perfectly. There are also techniques like the instant landing and backstep that felt very satisfying which are missing from newer sonic games that also use infinite runner style sections.
It wasn't great. And I most certainly don't mind that people dislike it. But I did like playing it while it lasted. To be fair I actually like motion controls and getting good at using them.
Sonic and the Black Knight was one of my favorite games growing up. Looking back it was straight booty in terms of gameplay but i just thought it was absolutely cool from a concept standpoint
21st Century Guy Well, as someone who wasn't there to hear all those promises before launch, I will defend Spore to the death for everything it is and continues to be.
Oh god, there's a chance he'll play Spore, don't do it Jirard! There no definite endpoint and you will only end up grinding at a 2,400 planet wide empire for the sake of having a 2,400 world empire.
man, watching this video with both secret rings and black knight being my childhood sonic games is a stab in the gut. I know the issues the game has, but it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be, you play for enough time and the controls start to click, that's how every game is.
Secret Rings and Black Knight are two of my favorite Sonic games. I have a ton of fun with both. I realize both have flaws, but I do think they're underrated.
2:54 to 2:57 I like Sonic and the Black Knight. 7:50 to 7:54 Some characters have returned in small games, like Sonic Dash. 7:55 to 8:00 Sonic almost always never changes as a character. 8:02 to 8:05 Sonic mentioned Secret Rings' events in Sonic Generations. 19:58 to 20:37 What I want to know, is how did Big even get in the book? 23:47 to 23:56 I'm too big of a Sonic fan to get rid of my copy. Even though the gameplay has a lot of flaws. And I haven't played it since 2007. It's just there...waiting for me to play it again... Anyways, as always, wonderful video!
Arthur. Florence True. These games take a long time to beat, plus they have to make the video. Every Friday is already asking for a lot from one person.
I think he was talking about the for honor videos that didn't affect this episodes release at all. Just bitching about more content he didn't ask for, probably.
Wow... I actually liked Secret Rings and Black Knight. To be fair, I was a sucker for the different settings and I had more patience for some of the more tedious parts of the levels... But I mean, these weren't that shit.
Gotta put this to the test. I am subscribed. I love your videos. And thank you for not swearing. You among others inspire me to try making content of my own to share. Thank you boss beard.
I loved secret rings and black knight, though tbh they were some of my first games, I was 9 when I got them. They were hard but I enjoyed them alot :) In fact 10 years later, black knight is one of my top 10 fav games
GDKsan At least Sonic trys to do something new! Yeah I agree some of them sucks! But atleast SEGA has the balls to try something new unless what Pokemon does! Pokemon is just the same game over and over again, with new creatures.
yeah releasing a game with genesis graphics is totally something new. And the guy who had the idea to add terrible gameplay and game breaking glitches to sonic 06 was a genius for trying something new. Also you chose the wrong time to speak about something you never played, cause sun and moon changed a lot of things into the formula.
When has Sonic tried anything new? All the games just try to copy what other franchises try to do and are rushed out and incomplete so they seem like new ideas.
8:03 "never mentioning these events again." sonic himself does actually say at the beginning of generations "no stranger than rescuing genies in magic books."
I remember getting all the gold medals for every mission on this game about over 10 years ago… my heart goes out to Jirard, especially the missions that require you to not touch any pearls or risk getting an instant mission failed.
"Its just another adventure that Sonic will never speak about again." Generations:"No stranger than *rescuing genies in magic books*, or saving aliens in an interstellar amusement park. I'm more concerned about finding our friends." I think Sega had the upper hand here.
Jirard while I listened to this and you started talking about the video I was half expecting you to talk about "The Palace That Was Found (Theme of Evil Foundry)" and mention something to the effect that Cobanermani456 using that as his theme song has driled that song into many people's head, in a similar but different way to the main theme "Seven Rings in Hand". I watched the whole video and you said you were reading and maybe responding to some comments so I hope you see this. And if you do, have a nice day/night! (Also because you did a "Defend it!" Video on Sonic Unleashed, does that mean that a completionist episode of it will never happen/be possible in the future?)
You know, I loved this game as a kid, even if the controls were total garbage (which I knew even back then). Considering the target demographic, I'd say that at least makes it a passable game. After all, you see people praise Math Blaster as a great math game for kids, but that's because it's a game for kids. Taking Sonic seriously does the same thing as playing Math Blaster as an adult with no nostalgia for it.
This game should not be passible as a kids game. Kids should have standards in terms of game design. That's like saying children should eat dog food because they are children. Seriously, this game isn't that good. I played it when I was a kid as well, but I played it last year, and my opinion changed like that. Tell me, should Metroid Other M be praised because it's meant to appeal to kids, or FE:11 does well because it sticks to how FE:1 did what it did? *Of course not!* There needs to be quality. -And for the record, math blaster was creative, it had time and effort poured into it, and it was a well designed game for kids. It's QUALITY entertainment, with it's focus being for kids.- And they realeased the game with serious controll problems, design issues, and everything else bad about the game. Name me another game at launch with such bad motion controlls.
Robert Blanchard It being for kids is NOT an excuse for a game to not at least try. Kids don't deserve total garbage just because they're kids. This was just a shameless cash grab because Sega couldn't be assed to wait until the game was in better shape for release. They deserve every harsh criticism that they get because they make stupid decision after stupid decision.
I still freaking love Secret Rings, specifically, the music, and holy crap the story, look at the final boss and that ending, god damn that ending is amazing
I feel that. Shame about the control set, but I enjoy everything else about the game. The music, Sonic and Shahra’s interactions, and the shonen feel is strong in some boss fights.
Aw yeah disappointment month! I've been looking forward to something like this!

britipino jeff It does a bit because it means it's canon, as in a part of the universe and can return.

Gohan D. Geo Geo Black Knight is good but Secret Rings is a tedious mess

Adventure games kinda suck these days.
I don't think people remembers Sonic R for its badness but because of Tails Doll, but i guess it counts lol =P
D R It doesn't matter. Back then those games were considered to be commercial masterpieces. Can you honestly say the same for 06 and Sonic R?

It wasn't great. And I most certainly don't mind that people dislike it. But I did like playing it while it lasted. To be fair I actually like motion controls and getting good at using them.
I liked this too when it was released. I was so glad that there was finally a sonic game with only speed levels ^_^
Sonic and the Black Knight was one of my favorite games growing up. Looking back it was straight booty in terms of gameplay but i just thought it was absolutely cool from a concept standpoint
"Sonic will never remember these adventures again"
*cough* *cough* Sonic Generations *cough*
Yep
I VOTE SPORE FOR DISAPPOINTING GAMES MOUNTH
Spore was awesome, what are you talking about?
Ace in the Hole It didn't turn out how it was promised.
21st Century Guy space era
SAMURAI SHODOWN SEN FOR DISSAPOINTING GAMES MONTH!
21st Century Guy Well, as someone who wasn't there to hear all those promises before launch, I will defend Spore to the death for everything it is and continues to be.
8:04 Actually (I hate to be that guy) but secret rings was referenced back in generations by sonic
So this game is essentially cannon now. Fuck!!!!
@@Mojo1356
Crisis City is also in Gens.
Which means that 06 is canon.
Oh god, there's a chance he'll play Spore, don't do it Jirard! There no definite endpoint and you will only end up grinding at a 2,400 planet wide empire for the sake of having a 2,400 world empire.
Jirard:These Characters will never be mentioned
Sonic:"Saving magical genies from magic books"(Sonic Generations)
man, watching this video with both secret rings and black knight being my childhood sonic games is a stab in the gut.
I can't wait for Mighty no. 9
Finally , another episode
?
They come up every friday, why finally? this one is on schedule.
Billybo10K cavemen thought that shit tasted good
Nothing crazier than saving genies in magic books-Sonic Generations
8:03 Sonic referenced this adventure in Sonic Generations.
Personally I liked the game. you get a great sense of speed at some points, and the final boss introduces my favourite sonic form: Dark spine.
Gotta put this to the test.
I am subscribed. I love your videos. And thank you for not swearing.
You among others inspire me to try making content of my own to share. Thank you boss beard.
I loved Sonic and the Secret Rings...
RM 0505 Same
I did too. Then I replayed it........... replay it.
RM 0505 same
Me too. i don't know but off all the bad sonic games that was the only one i liked
i replayed it like a year ago
I loved secret rings and black knight, though tbh they were some of my first games, I was 9 when I got them. They were hard but I enjoyed them alot :)
In fact 10 years later, black knight is one of my top 10 fav games
oi seven rings in hand is an awesome song that never gets old
disappointing games month? oh so that's sonic month
GDKsan Yeah but that is only 1 Sonic game and 1 Pokemon game. I was talking about most of them. Like I said I agree SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is terrible.
When has Sonic tried anything new? All the games just try to copy what other franchises try to do and are rushed out and incomplete so they seem like new ideas.
He should do Samurai Shodown Sen!!
My brain: Sonic and the black knight sucks!
My nostalgia: "puts a blanket over that"
The sonic fanbase rn lol
"They really dodged a bullet there, didn't they" Yes only to be hit by another bullet right in the dink.
SpongeBob: Creature from the Krusty Krab is not a bad game. Also, I liked Sonic and the Black Knight, though I admit it's not the best.
MLGWolf69 Probably the wii version had bad motion controls? I only played ps2, which I enjoyed.
Me too. I doubt it could be that bad though. Besides, wouldn't it probably have pro controller support?
MLGWolf69 It's mainly the Wii version. I loved the game as a kid. Slightly mundane, but very harmless
MLGWolf69 I loved the game
And Black Knight
Samurai Shodown Sen for Dissapointing Month!
(8:02) Sonic Generations: "...or saving genies magic books..."
I used to play this game when i was a little kid and that song that plays at the END OF EVERY LEVEL gave me some extreme PTSD... it brings me back...
When it comes to motion controls, the saying "Just because you can doesn't mean you should." Applies...
"Its just another adventure that Sonic will never speak about again."
Generations:"No stranger than *rescuing genies in magic books*, or saving aliens in an interstellar amusement park. I'm more concerned about finding our friends."
I think Sega had the upper hand here.
And then one line from the hedgehog in Generations proved this game CANON
You know, I loved this game as a kid, even if the controls were total garbage (which I knew even back then). Considering the target demographic, I'd say that at least makes it a passable game. After all, you see people praise Math Blaster as a great math game for kids, but that's because it's a game for kids. Taking Sonic seriously does the same thing as playing Math Blaster as an adult with no nostalgia for it.
Also, it was an early Wii game. It fell into the early era Wii game trap of using full motion controls. Not that hard to explain.
It's QUALITY entertainment, with it's focus being for kids.-
And they realeased the game with serious controll problems, design issues, and everything else bad about the game. Name me another game at launch with such bad motion controlls.
Personally, I liked it at first since you know, it's the Wii, but when I played it a little bit, the more I play, the more sucky it kind of is.
When I first played this, the thought that plagued me the most was “WHY CAN’T I TURN AROUND?!”
1:51 I gasped so hard my head hurt xDD
8:09 *ahem* sonic generations *cough*
*COUGHCOUGH*
**Brrrrrrrruuuuuuuuuuegh**
I enjoyed sonic and the secret rings.
same
As disappointing as it was, the party game mode was my childhood. Me and my sisters spent soo much time playing the mini games and having a blast.
8:05 not the characters but what about in sonic generations he brings up this game and other ones
"I think its safe to say that the secret rings soundtrack is the games best feature"
still criticizes the soundtrack
I remember 100% 4 times as a kid. Definitely one of my favorites in franchise, even if I'm wearing rose-colored glasses.
Bruhhh my siblings and I played those party games to death. Mario party wasn't in the budget lmao
Am I the only one who liked Sonic and the Black Knight?
nope i like it too
Asura Sennin me too
I liked it too! Up top!
nah i scratched the disk by playing it too much
I liked it.
8:00 Joke's on you, it's referenced in Sonic Generations
