About The Game:
Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game franchise created and produced by Sega. The franchise centers on a series of speed-based platform games. The protagonist of the series is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog named Sonic, whose peaceful life is often interrupted by the series' main antagonist, Doctor Eggman. Typically, Sonic-usually along with some of his friends, such as Tails, Amy, and Knuckles-must stop Eggman and foil any plans of world domination. The first game in the series, released in 1991, was conceived by Sega's Sonic Team division after Sega requested a mascot character. The title was a success, it spawned many sequels, and it transformed Sega into a leading video game company during the 16-bit era in the early to mid 1990s.

It may be the nostalgia or the winds of time bluring my vision, but I honestly remember Sonic and the Secret Rings being fun. Nothing game-changing, but fun.
As for Sonic and the Black Knight. I'm glad to see [from the comments] that I'm not the only one who liked it.
I just replayed it for my own 3D sonic marathon, and it's the second best sonic game I've played so far second only to adventure 2. When you start to trust the motion controls the game is a blast.

I personally liked Sonic and the Secret Rings and sometimes go back to play it.
I am generally able to control him pretty well too after coming back 4 years after last playing the game

I actually liked Black Knight. It was a lot better than Secret Rings, the first game I ever played bad enough that even as a kid I returned it.

The story, music, and visuals were neat, but I hate the gameplay and controls with a passion. And for me, a game that fails at that fails entirely.
If they remade it with mechanics and controls closer to something like Unleashed's day stages, I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

I only thought it was okay... it wasn’t bad, but it definitely wasn’t good. SatBK was one of the first sonic games I got, and I loved it, but the more I go back and play it or even watch gameplay, I notice that it just doesn’t fit well with sonic. Sure his attitude is, well... well it’s sonic, but the rest of it isn’t. It would be fine if it was it’s own thing, but people mainly don’t like it because it’s a sonic game... and motion controls

It's part of the videogame story telling where all character development reset to zero and you never have any major plot involving those characters or what happened again in the series. Of course I disagree with this being an entirely bad thing since E101 Gamma was awesome. shadow's would have been too if they left him alone, but the decided he was the exception and gave him character development to write him back into the series.
The storybook series is cannon, the bad future Stardust Speedway is cannon (implying Sonic failed), Sonic 06 is cannon again, but Sonic Rush and Rush Adventure are also cannon... Geez, when did the Sonic timeline become such a cluster f@#k?

I remember playing this when I was still under 10 years old. I really liked it, but of course, my standards were lower than the earth core. I honestly have no bad memories of it, but again, now that I'm older, I can understand why it may not be as good as I thought it was then.

I couldn't get past the tutorial. I gave up, and for go reason, too.
At least sonic boom sounds better than seven rings in hand, because it was over used in the game.
To be fair, I can see why it can be seen bad. It's a shame that it got overused, but as a song, it's decent. I prefer the Evil Foundry theme. Sonic and the Black Knight is slightly better overall imo.
This was actually one of my favorite Sonic games of all time. I didn't play all of them, granted. Sonic CD still eludes me, but I've never thought of most of the issues in this game you have as actual problems with the game.
When I was bad at using the controls, I played until I got better or got better equipped, then the game was awesome. I never had a problem using the Wii remote in the ways asked and once you get the hang of it and memorize a stage, you can style and show off and jump through huge sections of the stages that you'd normally have to proceed slowly through.
I STILL listen to this game's music. I think it's amazing.
Our views differ drastically and that's cool, but I thought this game was a fantastic time.
NoctilioGames How can Sonic CD elude you?! Hunt that game down and play it! It's one of Sonic's shining moments, introducing both Metal Sonic and the figure eight peel out. The special stages are quite unique as well, much different then the usual "collect x number of rings".

This game was a big part of my childhood, and I played the hell out of the party mode. I totally forgot this game even had it until you mentioned it, and now I have a ton of memories of ACTUALLY ENJOYING the whole game, party mode and all. To be fair, at the time I thought that the story in Sonic games was the most important part. Ah, the wonders of childhood innocence...
Positives: great artwork on the cutscenes, good music, good graphics for a wii game, great theming on the levels. Negatives: Everything Else.
I forgot about the story telling gem of Sonic wishing for a supply of napkins. Best part of the game.

1) Mario doesnt "grows as a character" either. Both of these characters are a brand thus changing their character or adding backstory will just end up becoming a mess.

I fucking loved Sonic and the Secret Rings. I thought it was great. Now that Ive grown up and see the bad things about this game. The story the gameplay.... the controls.... but this game holds a special place in my heart. i always have fun playing it coming back to it. Personally this game is pretty ok to me atleast.

Actually, despite the popular opinion, I really enjoyed playing Sonic and the Secret Rings and Black Knight. Were they hard? Yes. Were the controls questionable? Maybe. Do these two things make a game bad? Not in my book. Am I right in my opinion based on everyone else's standards? I don't know and I don't care.

Secret Rings tried sooo hard, and i love it for that. But my *god* the controls are awful. I'll never hate the game, but I sure do hate playing it

I totally agree. I've just completed this game and it's not that hard to control as many people make it out to be. I like challenge and I've almost never felt frustrated with all the missions I played (all I could unlock)

Sonic and the Black Knight was one of my favorite games growing up. Looking back it was straight booty in terms of gameplay but i just thought it was absolutely cool from a concept standpoint

Sonic and The Secret Rings was actually my first favorite game. I had a lot of fun as a child completing this game. I know it's not perfect and has a lot of errors, but my videogame life start with Wii Games (Especially Mario and Sonic Games). So is understandable.
I remember 100% 4 times as a kid. Definitely one of my favorites in franchise, even if I'm wearing rose-colored glasses.

You know, I loved this game as a kid, even if the controls were total garbage (which I knew even back then). Considering the target demographic, I'd say that at least makes it a passable game. After all, you see people praise Math Blaster as a great math game for kids, but that's because it's a game for kids. Taking Sonic seriously does the same thing as playing Math Blaster as an adult with no nostalgia for it.
Also, it was an early Wii game. It fell into the early era Wii game trap of using full motion controls. Not that hard to explain.
This game should not be passible as a kids game. Kids should have standards in terms of game design. That's like saying children should eat dog food because they are children. Seriously, this game isn't that good. I played it when I was a kid as well, but I played it last year, and my opinion changed like that.
Tell me, should Metroid Other M be praised because it's meant to appeal to kids, or FE:11 does well because it sticks to how FE:1 did what it did? *Of course not!* There needs to be quality.
-And for the record, math blaster was creative, it had time and effort poured into it, and it was a well designed game for kids. It's QUALITY entertainment, with it's focus being for kids.-
And they realeased the game with serious controll problems, design issues, and everything else bad about the game. Name me another game at launch with such bad motion controlls.
Personally, I liked it at first since you know, it's the Wii, but when I played it a little bit, the more I play, the more sucky it kind of is.
Robert Blanchard It being for kids is NOT an excuse for a game to not at least try. Kids don't deserve total garbage just because they're kids. This was just a shameless cash grab because Sega couldn't be assed to wait until the game was in better shape for release. They deserve every harsh criticism that they get because they make stupid decision after stupid decision.
I loved secret rings and black knight, though tbh they were some of my first games, I was 9 when I got them. They were hard but I enjoyed them alot :)
In fact 10 years later, black knight is one of my top 10 fav games
man, watching this video with both secret rings and black knight being my childhood sonic games is a stab in the gut. I know the issues the game has, but it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be, you play for enough time and the controls start to click, that's how every game is.

personally, i kinda liked secret rings
we need it on pc i would love for it to be ported so the flaws will be gone about the controller the game was cheap yes but it was hard to get a copy now adays i would snag one when i see it at the store once but couldnt keep it
Although there was plenty of jank involving the level obstacles, I felt like the basic movement and dash attack worked perfectly. There are also techniques like the instant landing and backstep that felt very satisfying which are missing from newer sonic games that also use infinite runner style sections.

Honestly I loved playing this game
And used to love when 7 rings in had played I actually have it play more often on smash and was happy it was implemented. Also not sure how. Fast you were moving the Wii remote but if you slow down on how fast you move Sonic left in right on the control you end up understand the controls much better, to a point you can fly through levels with a limited amount of problems, However I did hate how Sonic was able to get hurt in his speed mode, But it was interesting using the speed and slow mechanics at the right time, I had a blast with secret rings. And love the end battle or secret battle with 7 ring erazor jinn. It was lit, Anyway liked your video. Keep up the good work. MASK OUT!
As disappointing as it was, the party game mode was my childhood. Me and my sisters spent soo much time playing the mini games and having a blast.

2:54 to 2:57 I like Sonic and the Black Knight. 7:50 to 7:54 Some characters have returned in small games, like Sonic Dash. 7:55 to 8:00 Sonic almost always never changes as a character. 8:02 to 8:05 Sonic mentioned Secret Rings' events in Sonic Generations. 19:58 to 20:37 What I want to know, is how did Big even get in the book? 23:47 to 23:56 I'm too big of a Sonic fan to get rid of my copy. Even though the gameplay has a lot of flaws. And I haven't played it since 2007. It's just there...waiting for me to play it again...

To be fair Sonic's soundtrack has always been really strong.
Personally I liked the game. you get a great sense of speed at some points, and the final boss introduces my favourite sonic form: Dark spine.
I remember getting all the gold medals for every mission on this game about over 10 years ago… my heart goes out to Jirard, especially the missions that require you to not touch any pearls or risk getting an instant mission failed.
And then one line from the hedgehog in Generations proved this game CANON

yeah releasing a game with genesis graphics is totally something new. And the guy who had the idea to add terrible gameplay and game breaking glitches to sonic 06 was a genius for trying something new. Also you chose the wrong time to speak about something you never played, cause sun and moon changed a lot of things into the formula.

When has Sonic tried anything new? All the games just try to copy what other franchises try to do and are rushed out and incomplete so they seem like new ideas.

Secret Rings and Black Knight are two of my favorite Sonic games. I have a ton of fun with both.
I realize both have flaws, but I do think they're underrated.
The highest compliments I see for this game are things like “it wasn’t the worst game ever” and “I remember not hating it”. Let that demonstrate the quality of this game

Oh god, there's a chance he'll play Spore, don't do it Jirard! There no definite endpoint and you will only end up grinding at a 2,400 planet wide empire for the sake of having a 2,400 world empire.

I still freaking love Secret Rings, specifically, the music, and holy crap the story, look at the final boss and that ending, god damn that ending is amazing
I feel that. Shame about the control set, but I enjoy everything else about the game. The music, Sonic and Shahra’s interactions, and the shonen feel is strong in some boss fights.
That song at the beginning is from the OST. Pirate Storm (No Way Through) is the track title.
Wow... I actually liked Secret Rings and Black Knight. To be fair, I was a sucker for the different settings and I had more patience for some of the more tedious parts of the levels... But I mean, these weren't that shit.

Well, we did already go through a couple so we've to rule those out (06, Boom, Spinball, this one), but we still have Black Knight, Sonic R, Sonic 3D Blast, and Chronicles at least.

Well it would be awkward to get your hopes up to be disappointed especially around the mid 2000s and earlier....and later...only game I would say got my hopes high enough for disappointment was Unleashed.
Hey, the 3DS Sonic Boom games aren't terrible. The first is Meh, the second is Ok/Good. The console one though can go sit with 2006 and compare notes.

I'm pretty sure that getting 110 Golds requires you to beat the final boss. But for whatever reason, Jirard didn't feel like talking about it.
