Ken Block Hoonitron v Audi Quattro Rally Car: DRAG RACE

- Mat’s lining up in the incredible Audi S1 Hoonitron, and is about to go head-to-head with the iconic 1985 Audi S1 Quattro Group B rally car!
So let’s see how these three incredible Audis stack up. Starting with the S1 Hoonitron, it’s a car you would normally expect to see smashing out doughnuts rather than running in a straight line!
However, it still packs a mighty punch, with its two electric motors delivering 680hp and 640Nm of torque. What’s more, despite packing a 50kWh battery, it’s still fairly light, weighing in at 1,620kg.
Then we have the infamous Audi Group B rally car. It’s got a 2.1-litre 5 cylinder turbo producing 500hp & 480Nm. It may be down on power but it’s a fair bit lighter than the Hoonitron, tipping the scales at just 1,090kg.

Lets just remember that the original S1 is over 40 years old, I'd say that's damn good going considering the gap! I'd still take the group B beast over any modern, solely electric car, for sound alone! TBH I'd have expected more development over 4 decades, nonetheless the Hoonitron still shines & is an amazing car in its own right! RIP Ken.

Yeah, that rally chirp is something else, ha-ha! Back in '03 I turbocharged my '94 Celica. I used a Blitz Dual Drive blow-off valve from Japan I won on eBay. Combined with the compressor housing I was using on the hybrid T3/T4 turbo, it sounded exactly like that but way louder. It was deafening!😅
Yeah. Love this turbo sound also. But the E-Audi has also a different but crazy nice sound.

I think the hoonitron sounds really cool. A big complaint a lot of people have about EVs is the sound, but I like it. Of course the Quattro sounds better, though.

The Hoonitron should have been untouched since Ken passed away. I know it's a great marketing tool, but it wouldn't have been exist without Ken.
S1 is still one of the best cars that ever made, this sound is makes always goosebumps on my skin. Brilliant.

well the thing is it was build to race and to gather info to move the ev forward yes it was ken but at the end of the day ken and audi build it for a reason and they still working on that reason also to make you feel little better lia is now working with audi and with that car so it still within the block family racing (the video is on audi channel)
It was not meant to be a show car or a car behind a glass, it was meant to perform stunts for the Gymkhana series. I think Ken would've wanted it to be used instead of be a show car that only can be looked at.

@@Helios_1nesince exhaust goes through the Turbo and the sound waves gets distorted, therefore many turbo does not sound as good as an NA engine. Turbo cars usually has a bit lower max RPM. The Quattro sounds amazing though.

Rally cars need to be tested against each each on proper rally tracks: in the dirt, in the wet, in the snow, over long distances and doing mad jumps and crashes like I've seen in proper rally races. I wonder if the speed differences would even out when the Quattro is on its home turf.

Drag racing against the Quattro is the automotive equivalent of taking on the Flying Scotsman an a modern train. No matter who gets to Edinburgh the quickest, the Flying Scotsman is the winner because it is magnificent.

The funny thing about the hoonitron is it has a gear ratio of 1:10 from motors to the axles, so on the wheels it actually has around 6000NM of torque

Group B Audi all day, every day! That 5-cyl sound is one of the best engine sounds ever
This illustrates how irrelevant 'peak power' (the stats quoted) is compared to the area under the torque curve to determine a car's true acceleration potential.
The Quattro loses boost every gear change, so it makes a lot less than 550hp until it hits peak power.
Atleast in an actual rally you could keep the engine in its power band most of the time assuming the gearing is correct.
@@sjhudon386you can, but every time the throttle isn't wide open the turbo is losing boost pressure, which takes a moment to build up again no matter where in the rev range you are. It's not just about torque curve graphs.
Acceleration is all about putting power to the road, so peak power is indeed only useful when the engine is at maximum output. Peak power is much more useful for top speed, though.
That 360 was better than most of the recent Fast saga stunts.

The fact that the Hoonitron still completed the 1/4 in a time equivalent of modern day hot hatches and family sport sedans is just unreal.

If the S1 had the PDK gearbox it might have been closer. That 5-cylinder engine sounds fabulous and having experienced them in the Forrests on the '85 RAC, they sounded biblical!

Actually the Hoonitron has a gear ratio of 12:1, therefore resulting in around 3000 Nm of torque per axle = 6000 Nm in total!

torque at the wheel alone doesn't mean much unless we can see the complete torque and HP curves. Even a Nissan Leaf can produce >2.000Nm. Wheel torque.

@@purwantiallan5089Damn clear why the group was cancelled, though. Most of the cars had insane power and just kept getting more powerful, and neither car handling or safety could keep up. It was pretty clear that the only major changes in performance group B was going to have if it continued was yet more power, so it made sense to restrict it and force teams to innovate in other ways.
Röhrl said in some races they had the power of 700 horses in this car, not "only" 500.

This quattro s1 is sure underpower because back to 80s the power and the sound of this car is definitely a lot of different!And for the the memories in 1986 the lancia delta s4 is lapped 6th in estoril formula one cirquit!
Why do you think S1 was underpowered? As far as I know its engine can produce 450-500 HP depending on setup, so 480 HP is definitely a good number for this car. It has really good launch and lost only 1.5 secs to a modern race car that has better aerodynamics, more power and doesn't have a gearbox. I think S1 could show better results, if it had another gear ratio, one that prefers top speed over acceleration. But for S1 top speed doesn't mean much, since it was created for narrow and twisted roads, where acceleration is more important.
I was somewhat surprised that it has regular manual gearbox instead of sequential one. It definitely was loosing lots of time on every gear change.
@@ReasonX3Sequential gearboxes were pretty bad and unreliable until they started gaining traction in the 90s; most cars before that had a normal manual. You'd also probably be shifting faster if you weren't worried about damaging a $1.7 million car and were just focusing on speed, lol.
Probably only seems underpowered cause this is the only footage of one driving down a wide, straight road, lol. It'd look a hell of a lot faster down a narrow track

The fact that Audi built the Hoonitron specifically for Ken’s Gymkhana videos is crazy. Hell it’s probably the most expensive Gymkhana car ever made.

I love the mechanical involvement you get in a manual ice car, the feeling of working in unison with the machine without a computer interfering with my inputs, im glad im old enough to remember pre computer assisted cars, I'd happily drive a 70's car around today if i could afford one as the prices seem to have shot up since evs came on the scene.

Drag racing is not a valid comparison for cars. Put them on a racetrack, where braking and weight matters. Hoonitron wouldn't have a chance.

The ur-Quattro was a very tough car to handle iirc according to drivers who had experienced them. Always-active all wheel drive system meant that it likes to understeer alot and so heavy to change directions despite additional downforce that you'll have to flick it so often just so it turns. But the traction compared to other rally cars of the time sure is godly, especially when it comes to dirt stages.
Being much much lighter does help with braking and tire consumption compared to the Hoonitron too, but the Hoonitron has much better weight distribution and balance due to being an EV, plus an AWD system that can react to changes very quickly, modulating it's power every second. Theoretically, the Hoonitron wins in almost every way possible outside of drag racing even though the Quattro is a monster of it's time.

I remember as a school student I was using the electric troleys for public transport and they made very similar sound as the hoonitron. I was very excited when the driver accelerated it and it felt like he was driving really fast, but he was actually driving with 40km/h .
