Love going out in my TreVoR, It's 25 years old and has a proper gear knob and no driver aids nearly killed me once but as a driving experience it's amazing !!. Make you feel alive ! The s1 probably has a quicker gear change than your average manual too and that video really does show the advantage that those dsg type boxes give when you're trying to get down the road in a hurry. I have heard though that the likes of the golf r with a manual box has a totally different feel to it and is a lot more enjoyable than the dsg boxed golf r when getting thrown down a twisty back road.
@@lknowledge yip, they found variable stacks in some of the the 6r4 airboxes about 10yr after GroupB was over. They claimed 6R4 was 370-420bhp depending on air restrictor but the reality is even they N/A V6s were pushing 500bhp with the variable inlet stacks and all that. Listen to some of the 6R4 footage, you can hear the thing sounding chunky as F-ck around the 3200rpm which wasn't when the cam profile went nuts so clearly that was variable inlet stacks giving that visible boost of power. When cameras were mounted inside the 6r4 would shake like a mofo and go blurry at 3200rpm which again is a trait of variable inlet stacks. Toyota got caught later in normal WRC with a variable inlet on the turbo cold side it would suck open an outer vairable stack on the turbo inlet hose under heavy boost and give the thing loads more torque and a chunk of bhp.. they were all doing that in GroupB and keeping it quiet, that's where they learned it.
As someone that was 16 when S1's, T16's, RS200's, 6R4's and S4's were flying past my house in South Wales on an RAC Rally special stage, and what got me in to cars in the first place, that turbo flutter brought back awesome memories of these beasts at full chat. Living a KM from the RAC service stop in South Wales and meeting Markku Alen, Timo Salonen, Juha Kankkunen, Michele Mouton, Tony Pond, Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomquist, Ari Vatanen and many more Group B drivers from that era and many others from Group A onwards was an absolute privilege as you had to be a sandwich short of a picnic to drive these turbo nutter b@stards over forest and gravel roads.

0:48 to clarify the PDK thing: that was back in the S1‘s racing time. Audi thought of ways to optimise the S1 and back then Porsche used a 5 speed double clutch system in their top tier lemans prototypes. So Audi went to Porsche Consulting and had them adapt that system for the S1. It took really long to get that thing perfected to Audis standards but once it was perfect the rally drivers and co-pilots actually didn’t like it much because it made the car too fast and they missed the speed/course reference a manual gearshift gives you. And then on the first rally where they used it Walter Röhl crashed the car so then they terminated the project and went back to manual for the next rally

Definitely not gonna perform that well, due to how low the car is, and the fact the suspension isn’t meant for those tracks. If it was however modified in such a way that gave it a higher ride height, new tires, etc, then that’d be interesting to see.

I have this image in my mind of an Audi S1 quattro flying in the air, flames going out of the exhaust and photographers running out of the way in the very last moment... What a legendary car that is.
I suppose it highlights 2 things - just how good the 80's hyper-Rally car was, and how much technology has moved things on in production cars - but it did take a top-rung Supercar to take-on / equal that 80's hyper-Rally car.
Yeah I mean Audi's current 5 cylinder engines are pretty much mini versions of the V10s in the Lamborghini Huracan and Audi R8. So an RS 3, RS Q3, and TT RS will sound similar to the R8.
Considering the Quattro can do what is does on tarmac then do the same on mud, gravel, snow etc. and is an antique just shows how far ahead of their time the legends of group B were. It never gets old!
When I see that Car do a 1/4 mile in 11 seconds with a manual gearbox, I remember the dialoge said by Sean in Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift. "It's not the ride, it's the Driver".
Gotta love the Group B Quattro. Had it been in full tune of the era, it would've been running at around 600hp. Also, it's not really been designed for high speed stuff as you don't normally need much over 130mph in rallying.
Exactly, you only need 120mph or so in forests, gravel, or even tarmac stages. It is all about adhesion and cornering. That it is still so good at drag racing, even with a detuned engine, is amazing.
Steve jumped start on 3rd race .. mat timing was actually spot on.. when his hands started to go down he let go of his brakes whereas Steve moved off millisecond’s quicker

I believe the rally car is on low boost setting. Here in Bulgarian we are having the same car. The driver manage to get 9.973 on 1/4 mile. He was still driving in on race tracks a few years ago. P.s. the car has no turbo lag button...

What I would love to see next is comparison between S1 and recent rally cars - S2000, R5, WRC 2.0 litre, WRC 1,6 litre etc. Do you think you can pull it off?:-) In this video it was great to see the difference when S1 driver got used to the car after 1st race.
They're not that different in speed nowadays from group b days through the courses. Top power is down. There are rallycross classes that have faster cars with different regulation.
@@lasskinn474 Well, that's the point - top power is down on newer cars. I follow rally so I am familiar with typical power & torque figures for each of these categories. Newer cars have much more efficient drivetrains with less mechanical losses and sequential gearboxes. And I have no doubt that even S2000 car would be quicker on actual courses than Quattro S1, the handling is that much better nowadays, it is quite frankly amazing. But my guess is that properly launched Quattro would be quicker at the 1/4 mile than anything all the way up to 2017-2021 1,6 litre WRC with about 380 HP. 2022 1,6l hybrids have 500+ HP. I would've guessed times in high 10s for 2017 car and at least low 10s for 2022 hybrids.

The old 5.0 Lambo V10 as used in the pre facelift Gallardo was developed out of the older V10 used in multiple concept cars. The Audi engines have 90 mm bore spacing while the Lambo engines have 88 mm bore spacing.

Love that sound of the turbo. Back in the 80's my father drove the regular Ur-Quattro originally raced by Michele Mouton.

@@coach4050 The Audi/Lambo V10 5.2 as used in the R8 and Huracan were based on the Audi V8. The old 5.0 Lambo V10 as used in the pre facelift Gallardo was developed out of the older V10 used in multiple concept cars. The Audi engines have 90 mm bore spacing while the Lambo engines have 88 mm bore spacing.
