      I don't think so, because she began saying that she hates flowers during episode 2 of season 1, I believe. One of the guys leaves a flower on Nanno's desk and she tells one other girl to take it since she doesn't want it. She doesn't give any explanation other than "I just hate flowers".
      I don't think her hatred for flowers is ever explained.

    • @valerielorelie
      @valerielorelie 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +134

      I'm late to this, but who cares. I personally interpreted it as not being a hatred of flowers per say, but rather a hatred of her fate. We learn from the outset that Nanno is immortal and, as the daughter of Mara (demon king of karma in Buddhism), she also has some special abilities. One of these is being omniscient, all-knowing and able to see into past, present and future events even when she's not around for them. There are some moments where this is questioned, such as her surprise when falling in love with Tk as she clearly didn't expect it or see it coming. However, the fact that she "dies" in flowers might be foreshadowing of her death at the end, which influenced her reaction to them. She must've been aware of her supposed demise at the end and this is where she grew to dislike flowers, as she knew all along that Yuri would leave her in them.
      Also, an interesting fact, but as she's the daughter of Mara, it might be that she hates flowers because when Mara tried to stop Buddha from attaining enlightenment, he and his army shot arrows at him. These arrows turned into flowers before the Buddha, who didn't stop meditating. Her hatred of flowers could stem from the fact that Mara himself was essentially taken down by his own arrows turning into flowers!

      Although, I have to say that I don't think she didn't see it coming when she fell in love with TK.
      The plan was to make him get attached to her in order to punish him once she left. The whole goal was to make him lose the one thing he truly wanted.
      Then again, maybe her *actually* falling in love took her by surprise.

      Yes, I think she knew what her own intentions were and she was aware of how HE would get attached considering how well-educated she is in human emotion. But I think it took her by surprise how she actually fell in love and got too invested. She knew how people would typically feel in this situation and that she'd have to form an intimate bond with him in order to deliver karma, but that look of longing when she glances at Tk at the end of the episode just proves that not only was she not anticipating that kind of reaction from herself, but also that she wasn't expecting to get so DEEP into the role that she actually caught feelings.

    I think the show is in a high school setting because that usually the age when people gain enough agency and awareness to do true evil. A child can't truly be considered evil, as most of the wrong they can do is farily limited and unvolutary, almost always caused by emotional disregulation or in response to neglect and not by actual malice. However teen years are a turning point when people gain enough consciousness to decide if they want to align their behavior with a moral system or not.

    • @runway5338
      @runway5338 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      That's a good perspective on it. Just to add my own 2cents, it might also be because at that point in time, even if they don't have much life experience, most teenagers know enough about the world to distinguish right and wrong. A lot of the situations Nanno is in aren't very nuanced; they're pretty black and white. Which I think adds up to the mentality of growing adolescents. They tend to see things in a black and white pov, until they experience life more (of course, this isn't counting teens who are mature for their age group, whether naturally by personality or experiencing a lot more at a younger age).
      Another thing is when we see *court trials of minors, their punishments usually aren't heavy. Not unless they commit a crime bad enough that they'll get *trialed as an adult. Which I don't think happens that often, so they try to prosecute them with the highest punishment possible. But I'm talking about the country I live in. It's different in other countries.
      Idk about Thailand, but when the spotlight was on South Korean and their school bullying cases that were borderline-criminal if not straight-up-criminal. There was a concerning amount of these cases relative to their population size. A lot of those cases were swept under the rug and the perpetrators were let off with a slap on the wrist, merely because they were minors. *Despite the severity of what had transpired.
      The show's stated before that the episodes are based on real life cases (*not all of them). So maybe Nanno is the karma that we yearn for when we see horrible ppl getting away with stuff just because they're "young and don't know better."
      Edits: *

    We saw in the colourless school episode that all versions of Nanno exist at the same time. The version that dyed her hair purple, the version that got impaled, the version wearing green ribbons. So nanno doesn't die, I think. She spawns, she multiples. She isn't ever dead cuz another clone with her memories and abilities comes up but the version before her definitely goes through the brutal pain. That version is still very much alive. I hope that explains why even in the last episode, nanno died in the garden and was alive later. Yuri said "it doesn't heal, huh?" But in the school episode, it was clear that it heals just to the point that the signs of injury stay it doesn't become as if it never happened. It never healed anyway. Nanno cannot become a mortal.

  • @miidnxghts
    @miidnxghts ปีที่แล้ว +691

    I think there’s something quite off in the statement “Nanno is there to get revenge”. As we notice, and as you stated, every single one of the people getting punished in this series have wronged Nanno in one way or another. She gets people what they deserve, and that’s karma, not revenge: the very few, (mainly) good people she has befriended and haven’t wronged her or other people got out of the episodes’ situations unharmed and even happy, look at the girl she befriended during “Liberation”: she doesn’t appear much, but she explicitly is let out of the school along with Nanno because she had a clean conscience the whole time.
    This pattern of healthy friendship between Nanno and another student almost never occurs, but it’s something that proves that Nanno doesn’t take revenge, otherwise she would try to actively make people in the wrong (making her side of the story wrong as a consequence), she’s just doing her job as a “judge”, as how you called her.

    • @WhitneyDahlin

      I agree! Nano doesn't force or manipulate anyone to do anything. They all choose to do something terrible of their own free will. She merely provides the temptation. If any one of them would have done the right thing they would have never been punished but because they all chose to make a terrible decision. They suffer the consequences for it. Nano is obviously much older than she appears, and I assume she can probably sense people's intentions and sense when someone is a bad person.

      @cherrychaeryeong2461 I mean I'm not sure if the teacher's daughter dying was because of Nanno, but it doesn't make sense in both cases. On JennyX's behalf though, she was still pushed over the edge by Yuri. Although she's not entirely at fault, she's still the one who committed murder.
      Nanno also does this sometimes, like in episode two season one when she commented on that girl's weight to make her angry

    • @miidnxghts
      @miidnxghts 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Tracy_B24 the little girl hadn't done anything, but that's still part of the punishment she set up for the teacher. he cared about his daughter, surprisingly enough, and nanno got rid of her merely because it hurt him since he held no regard for the other people around him. unfortunately, she was a means to an end. he hurt many girls, so the only girl he cared about got hurt.
      that said, i do not like the girl getting killed, either. in fact, i believe it could have been handled better by the writers because it makes nanno feel more like a villain than the anti-hero she is.

    Junko: Thirst

      For whatever reason I thought that the three daughters of Māra were Nanno’s older sisters since her actress (Chicha) said that Nanno is the devil’s daughter. I’m assuming since this comes from south Asian/Buddhist mythology the word “devil” and demon are interchangeable so that’s what Chicha meant. If her sisters are thirst, desire, and delight, then Nanno is consequence or Judgement since those names seem to imply temptation/indulgence which the devil famously does to sinners so they can be taken to hell to be punished

      Actually in this case it’s both. A protagonist is the main character of a story. An antagonist is the main rival/enemy of the main character(s). Since Nanno is the throughline for the anthology stories in Girl From Nowhere and the one the narrative revolves around, she is the protagonist of the overall series. But since the narrative revolves around her _because she’s escalating conflict on purpose_ and presents herself to the other main characters of each individual story as their enemy, she is also their antagonist. She does this on a constant enough basis that even if there are different additional enemies each episode, she is the *main* antagonist, even if she changes later on. For the majority of the story she is the enemy, even if her character is more complex than a simple villain. The creator is right, at most you could argue they should’ve also said protagonist but that’s kind of pedantic.

      I think what I really liked about Girl from Nowhere is how Nanno was a judge rather than a traditional vengeful spirit. A lot of times while watching I remember I'd go "why is she letting it go this far? Why doesn't she just terrorise them sooner?" And then I think it was the episode with the plagiarist student and the gay teacher that made go 'Oh... she isn't a vengeful entity, she's a judge. Karma.' It made me think what the point of those episodes once since they didn't provide the 'bad people getting what they deserve' catharsis, and then I realised they don't provide catharsis, they provide empathy and hope. I was mistaken in thinking that Nanno was going easy on these two; when I re-watch it, I realise that no, she's actually treating them the same as she treats everyone else. It's just that they refused to cross a line, and as such, they saved themselves from a tragic ending.
      The high achiever could've easily become a standard episode- she cheats to get ahead, her lie catches up with her, she does horrible things to other people for selfish gains, Karma. The reason it didn't isn't because Nanno was being lenient; it's because the student refused to become that person.
      That really cemented in my mind that Nanno isn't just a revenge seeking ghost, and I think the highschool reunion emphasised that even more. Why does she wait so long? If you're cynical, you could say it's a petty move to make it hurt more, but I believe it's because Nanno believes the punishment comes from the evildoer, not an omniscient 3rd party. Yeah, she could've just tortured and killed her assailants- but why do that when they're going to ruin their own lives anyway? They weren't being haunted by a vengeful Nanno, and they still ended up miserable because of their own decisions. Knowing that you're the reason you're miserable is so much worse than knowing a demon is ruining your life.
      That's why Nanno so often pulls the "comes back the next day alive and acts as if nothing bad happened". It's 'The telltale heart'- why brutalise an evildoer when their own guilty mind will undo themselves for you?
      And that's why I think the gay teacher episode hit so hard.... like, she was an authority figure abusing her power on her students due to personal reasons. It seems like she's perfect to go the traditional Nanno route.
      But she doesn't. When I first watched it, I had thought that Nanno had saved the day, but upon rewatching it, Nanno gave her the same treatment everyone else got. The teacher saved herself by realising the anger she had inside came from a place of grief and pain, and was able to accept herself and change her treatment of her students.
      ... Idk man!! Girl from Nowhere started off as a revenge fantasy show where bad people got their comeuppance but I really love that they adapted the show into "people decide their own punishments, and vice versa, their own reward".......... empathy forms the best horror.

    I had this video saved for later and I wondered where it went. I'm glad it's back up now and I'll watch it right away. I love how Nanno is truly like a devil on your shoulder where she tempts you to so bad things but since she's Thai Karma she won't only punish you, but gives you what you deserve. So obviously it's usually bad Karma but that stealing guy got good Karma because he didn't try to blame her at the end.
    That's also why I don't really think she was a human before? Because I'm almost certain any human with her kind of power would turn out like Yuri. Because humans can't help falling revenge. And yes, sometimes her punishments feel out of pocket but as I already said, she also deals good Karma🤔
    But then again.... Yuri got her power only after dying so like idek.
    I do not believe that Nanno died at the end of s2 (because yeah, I don't think she was human to begin with) but who knows.
    It's definitely very fascinating.
    S3 is gonna be chaotic af.

    Ep03 was the first to show Nanno as a delusional hypocrite psycho
    The girl in the story needed to be pushed so hard into doing something wrong because of how resistant and hesitant she was. She was eventually practically forced into plagiarising art and then got her social life and image dilapidated for it.
    Like if a bit of jealousy is all it takes to want to ruin a teenagers life, then that is already way beyond wanting to prove humans are the worst. That is framing them as such then torturing them for it. She basically wanted to see someone in pain with bogus reasoning as an excuse.
    Nanno was a hateable character in that episode

    • @eochiiii
      @eochiiii ปีที่แล้ว +52

      Your comment is proving you did not understand the show whatsoever. In that episode the girl was pushed by her own accord because she was jealous that her friend got an award and was being praised. Even going so far to frame her friend for “breaking her arm”. She plagiarized so many artists artwork and got off with no repercussions from the school.
      The one thing Nanno did was make her realize that her jealousy and envy would cause her to lose people close to her. She lost her friend because of her own selfishness. Nanno literally told her to “copy and paste” she didn’t actually push her into doing anything. So explain to me again how Nanno was the “psychopath that got off to people being hurt.”

    • @eochiiii
      @eochiiii ปีที่แล้ว +24

      The first couple episodes start off strong with each of them following a theme. That episode was based around envy and what people would do to get attention. It was so blatantly obvious that I’m quite confused that you watched the episode and thought Nanno had a “bogus reason” when she didn’t even punish her harshly she just made her regret her decisions for being a shitty person. Her job is to judge those who are morally corrupt. She didn’t really push them to anything since some of them were already guilty of these actions. And we have a few episodes with her actually helping people.

    • @dark6.6E-34
      @dark6.6E-34 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your comment is proving you didnt understand the show nor my comment whatsoever.
      In that episode a teen was jealous of a friend in a highly competitive education system (jealousy justified). That was all it took for her to be a target, after which she was made to believe the "secret" to success is "inspiration" and everyone is doing it. Her believing the lies went with it, and even then was hesitant to submit her work, which nanno had to do for her, leading her to a really shitty situation.
      After that people wanted more, and to keep the lie going more plagiarism was required. Later she broke her own arm to avoid going on stage and "country wide" embarrassment which nanno set her up for.
      I get that pinning it on a friend, she was jealous of, was stupid, but given the context; the stupidity of a teenager, the fear of public judgement /stages at that age, it makes sense.
      There was just too much intervention here to jump from justified jealousy to public humiliation and a hurt social image in such a competitive environment. There is even potential for further damage to her growth as a person.
      Friends argue and get back together, that is very common and could have very much been the case here if not for all the involvement.
      Now compare that to nannos previous targets which were cold-blooded killers or r****ts, and it is clear how black and white her outlook on humans is. Its just that this is the first episode where this was evident. Which was the point of the show given the last episodes.
      It wasn't psychopathy gotta backtrack there, but definetly a display of delusion, hyporacy, and oblivion.

    • @eochiiii
      @eochiiii ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dark6.6E-34 I stopped reading after I saw the “jealousy was justified.” So it was justified for her to frame her friend for breaking her arm and even gaslighting her??? And you’re bringing up Nanno only going after “cold blooded killers” which is so funny to me bc like you clearly stopped watching after like three episodes. She went after different types of morally corrupt people. We have episodes with peoples greed and pride being their downfall, their desires, their personality and the way they treat people etc. there were so many different episodes and different people being judged. We have a few episodes where she goes to schools to help some people instead of punishing anyone.
      Her outlook isn’t “black and white” because there wasn’t even an episode where she unjustly punished somebody. You’re trying so hard to use s1e ep3 as a justification for why Nanno was a “psychopath,” when she clearly targeted somebody’s who’s own insecurities, pride, and jealousy set them up the entire episode. The girl wasn’t even harshly punished that episode and this is how I know you’re lying bc you said she got “defamed and humiliated” when at the end of the episode people were still cheering for her and ignoring the artists calling her out for stealing their art work. The worst she got that episode was losing her friend and realizing that her jealousy would cost her more than that in the future. But she was too self absorbed that she didn’t see that.

    I think many of us would infer that Nanno represented the concept of Karma. It seemed to me that many are focused more toward personification(which is fair because that's what the "showing" side of the show used to communicate to us watchers) rather than the embodiment of the concept.
    At the same time I think, what if the creator really did intended to make Nanno represent entity that is seen as more of an agent(Mara, in popular context of buddhism, comes of as a thinking, talking agent) than a nature(dharma) in buddhism. Suddenly "Mara"(which was made her name) which gets translated into English as "Devil", makes sense and in my opinion became rather apt description already but that's where the problem lies. Nanno is a Mara. However "Devil" in concept of 'western' religion is very different from "Mara".
    If I were to look at this through a lens of buddhism(as far as I personally understood) which is the main idea(/religion) that shape the philosophy in Thai culture(though 'buddhism' of many people in Thailand is kind of 'different'), the question of pure of impure(good or evil?) is irrelevant. There is this concept in buddhism that goes "sabbe dhammā anattā" meaning "myriad(all) dhammā(nature) is without a (permanent)self". There is no such a thing as a "pure/good" or "impure/bad" person; beings act upon the conditioning of their mind--It is possible to bring out any kind of conduct from anyone who is stuck in their own (impermanent)nature.
    Karma is not "the Judge", it would seem like one if we were to give Karma a "self". I'm going to assign a "self" to Karma here for the sake of explanation because I'm hitting the boundary of language. Karma in more popular sense refers to both the action and its consequences(The word is a bit nuanced, I'm not touching that here) or to put it other words Karma represents the idea of "Actions have consequences".
    Because in nature there was no "right" and "wrong", one does not necessarily get punished doing "wrongs", neither does one necessarily get rewarded commiting "rights". That being said, action still have consequences and people do put labels on consequences as "punishment" or "reward". These consequences then go back to the agent(the one who commit the action) as the conditioning, forming a cycle of Karma.
    Mara is used in buddhism as a metaphor for conditioned existence, a 'demon' that people crafted for themselves.
    I think framing Nanno as a "Judge" makes it sound a bit weird. I don't think they were there to pass judgement but rather to accelerate and emphasise the consequence of actions, just like how Mara motivated/tempted beings and make them trap themselves in a ceaseless suffering of Karmic Cycle.
    I think the illustration of Nanno learning (nature of)humanity and later showing mortality is an allegory of escaping the Karmic Cycle; Obeserving and comprehending cause and effect leads to awakening from the temptation of conditions(extinguishing the Mara), thus releasing her from the perpetual cycle of suffering.
    Edit: added info

    The link and similarities to Tomie are clear for sure. Not sure how many of the Tomie stories youve read, thought, but if you read all of the Tomie stories you will realize that Tomie is actually an awful person. She downright convinces people to commit murder. (Multiple times) she is a social, and literal parasite, that has the ability to enchant and cloud the minds of most the men she meets. During the entirety of the Tomie saga there has only been one male character who was completely unaffected with her ability to control his mind, and that caused her to become completely obsessed with him. She is well aware of the powers that she has, and she wields them intentionally and cruelly, at one time even using her ability to groom an 8 year old boy.

    Question where do you live that you've been in lockdown for 2 years?!?? We were in lockdown for 3 months in 2020 then everything went back to normal! I hope you're okay
