For beginners using the gunlance, most important feature, if your gunlance is "sheathed" and you have a monster charging straight at you, hold down R and press X+A and you will draw immediately into guarding, this is VERY handy and still has saved me to this day.
Peter Young Also, each lance has a "Shot Level" which tells the damage of the actual Shelling ability. This is flat damage that is INDEPENDENT of the lance's actual raw and elemental damage, so pay attention when picking your gunlance. The "Artillery" skill will boost this damage, but not the damage of your lance itself. A Full Burst with a level 3 or 4 Long-type will do more damage than a level 1 Normal, despite having less ammo to blast them with. Another important thing that wasn't mentioned: while gunlances have infinite reloads, the Shelling ability burns through Sharpness quickly. If you have time, sharpen your weapon before using a big attack like Wyvern's Fire or Full Burst to do the most damage (because of the sharpness damage multiplier). This is a good thing to do while the monster is mounted if you're in multiplayer (just make sure you won't get hit while it's flailing around).
I'm pretty sure red is the lowest you can go, you bounce off everything which is punishment enough. With the GL you can't fire anymore unless you sharpen. Your weapon doesn't break or anything, if that's what you're thinking. The game won't e ever let you be weaponless.
There's something you missed. If you have your weapon unsheathed and forward thrust off a ledge, you would reload a shell while you perform a downward slam against the ground. Also, you can also do a wyvern fire after you unload all your shells, but that would probably be very risky since it would take a lot of time and leave you vunerable for quite a while. (Hope this information helps!)
I noticed with this weapon compared to others, this help me learn how to be more aggressive and stay in and do heavy damage (compared to the "hit and run" strategy i use with dual blades)
Ya know, I just started to get into the gunlance, and before I do into world or rise with it I wanted to check out how I would do in my oldest owned monster hunter game MH4U, so thank you for making the vid man!
I'm getting this game for Christmas (MH4U from my parents, the 3DS XL from myself), and I'm acclimating myself to the weapons, lore, and basics so when I finally play for the first time I will know what to do!
Oh, and thanks for the tutorial videos! ProJared did a great beginners guide that covers combat and basics like eating before a hunt, crafting potions and such, supply items, etc. while yours explain the weapons and other things specifically... I'm debating on the Switchaxe, Gunlance, Insect Glaive, Dual Swords, or either the Bow or Heavy Bowgun... I'm really digging the Gunlance and Bow, so we shall see what I like best!
I've been using almost every weapon except the gunlance, and I decided to try it out, and I love it! You can deal heavy damage in quick succession, and be decently mobile. Thanks for the tutorial!!
This vid, like the other MH4U weapon tutorials are decent but are missing several key bits of information, like the guarding stab does not protect you during the stab, not to mention the three different types of gunlances, I just hope there is a more detailed remake of this vid planned.
i think you forgot two things: 1) when you do Forward+X you can turn it in the R+Forward+A by pressing A during the charge. 2)if you do Forward+X near a ledge you will do a slam attack without using ammo. Just 2 thing I wanted to add because the first is pretty useful (at least to me)
One of the best tutorials I've watched in a long time for any topic on youtube thus far. Visual representation with clear explanation of the product result along tips for each attacks use. Sub'ed
So many cool and interesting weapons. When I get this game I think I will alternate between the gunlance and the switch axe. I would hate to be forced to chose only one of them, although I imagine it will take longer to progress through the game if I chose two weapons...
Your always going to use multiple different types of weapons. Hammers are very important especially for soloing and breaking key things on certain monsters the a gun lance or charge blade would just deflect off of. I would suggest building an assorted stock of weapons of all different elements unless your just using a raw dmg weapon through the whole game.
I got monster hunter 4 just a few days ago. I'm a noob. I decided to use the gunlance. But i used it incorrectly until now. I never used the evade move or the normal x+a upperthrust. Thanks for this video.
Quick note that I don't think he mentioned: Mainly use the evade move after an attack. Like the normal lance, the normal dodges are kind-of awkward since they shove you in the inverse direction you press, so it can easily screw you over if you're not careful and try to go left or right.
I've been a GS master race user from gen 2 to gen 3. now I look up the gun lance and I feel really astonished by how much this weapon can do. the move-set of it is amazing. and the weapon is just really cool , specially those reload and slam/release attacks. I will attempt to try MH4 ultimate with the GL. I feel like it's going to be very hard for me because I am so used to learning to monster's pattern to do my level 3 charges. The GL looks really advanced in terms of gameplay. gonna take me a while to learn but yolo. if I'm a hunter that can master the monster's movement surely I can master another weapon right ? o.O *in my mind : scared af boi*
You never showed she'll damage or WF damage, only % bonus for skills. I want to know how much each shell does and if it's worth having a skill to add more or if % bonus is better. Is ATK XL better than +20 Artillery? That's what I need to know. I know it varies on the GL you're using, but what's she'll damage compared to regular attacks? How much more damage does charge shots do? I dont think think your regular lance attack increases with the Artillery skill. Can anyone answer any of these questions?
I wanna ask.. i have monster hunter portable 3rd in my psp.. how can i use these paintball, poison, thunder ammos for my own bone gunlance? It always uses the normal ammos.. I want to use them it's going to waste...
Which gunlance is that? as far as I can tell it's the brute tigrex, but the brute trigrex is a wide GL iirc so it should have 2 shots And I don't think it's a relic eighter.
+EazyRun It's not the kushala GL! The kushala GL is slimer and has a lion's head as a shield, not a round shiled. I know it's the Brute Tigrex GL. imgur.com/KJCfeDD I'm just wondering why does it have *5(five)* shells instead of 2, because the Tigrex GL is a Wide GL(/can only have 2 shells) and not a Normal GL( who has 5 shells). Not even Load Up can give a Wide GL 5 shells! Gl can get one more shell with Load Up or Clandestine(which is Load Up, Combinaion +20% and Sneak) and those 2 skills do not stack. Meaning a GL can have MAX one(1) more shell. Also there is no relic Gl skin that looks like that monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/MH4U:_Relic_Weapons#Gunlance. *tl;dr That is the Brute Tigrex GL. The B.Tigrex GL is a Wide GL, meaning that it can't have more than 3 shells in a legit/legal way.*
Okay sorry I watched it on my phone and the shield looked like a lion and the lance like daora, obviously. It's the demo version of MH4U. It was used to show off, probably.
I think ur gunlancing is wrong lol I don't do an evasion style I do the guard style the slam is my bread and butter with the shots alternating the wyvern fire cool down periods but that's just me
It depends on what you prefer. The Gunlance is a lot more risky and harder to deal with because it uses up whetstones like candy, but it's got craploads of firepower and some devastating moves. Meanwhile, the lance is generally more mobile and has better defensive options and basic attacks (as in, not counting the rounds of the gunlance), but it doesn't really have the satisfying big heavy-hitting blast that the gunlance does. So would you rather do a lot of damage but be less mobile and just deal with whetstone usage, or be more defensive and able to close in practically without the flashy moves?
The creation of the G.L in a nutshell. : Man I love the Lance but I also like the heavy bowgun. I just wish I could have both. The creator of mh: Both you say?
For beginners using the gunlance, most important feature, if your gunlance is "sheathed" and you have a monster charging straight at you, hold down R and press X+A and you will draw immediately into guarding, this is VERY handy and still has saved me to this day.
You also could have explained the strengths/weaknesses of the three different kind of gunlance ammo types: Normal, Long, Wide.
Peter Young Also, each lance has a "Shot Level" which tells the damage of the actual Shelling ability. *****
I looked it up, and you're right! Shots aren't affected by sharpness, so I guess it's probably better to sharpen after you WF instead of before.
***** ive never gotten to red, do you really fail a quest if you do?
I'm pretty sure red is the lowest you can go, you bounce off everything which is punishment enough. With the GL you can't fire anymore unless you sharpen.
Your weapon doesn't break or anything, if that's what you're thinking. The game won't e ever let you be weaponless.

This weapon was amazing in ptbl 3rd for psp.
I'm planning to revisit MH$U, this is the game where I found my true main weapon: Gunlance. Really glorious times
I'm getting this game for Christmas (MH4U from my parents, the 3DS XL from myself), and I'm acclimating myself to the weapons, lore, and basics so when I finally play for the first time I will know what to do!

Goodluck! and if you choose Insect glaive i suggest you feed it with Speed nectars and don't mind the element since your glaive will do the damage.
same
I’m a melee gunlancer myself
Started that in mhw
Glad to see the weapon is basically the same as it is in world
Melee? just play lance lol :)
@@Langeheinicke lol but i get what he means with melee gun lance considering it's attacks have slamming attacks that do more damage
I've been using almost every weapon except the gunlance, and I decided to try it out, and I love it! You can deal heavy damage in quick succession, and be decently mobile. Thanks for the tutorial!!

These guides have been incredibly helpful for me, the game really does a rubbish job of teaching you the strengths and weaknesses of each weapon.

I just love your weapon tutorial videos ! They are perfect for me that like to try differents weapons ! +1
Great videos dude! Haven't played in a long time, and these videos have done a good job reminding me what each weapon can do. Muchas gracias!
Wow, very thorough and clear. Subbed!
I tried picking the most beautiful melee combos in my opinion but they're all so gorgeous but the gunlance is my favourite

For ledge attack, I prefer to just forward X off the ledge directly for the slam.
What is your favorite of choice if you don't mind me asking.
You didn't say anything about the three different types of gunlances. Long, Wide, and Normal.
Gaijin Hunter on TH-cam has a guide covering the different types of gunlances.
I really want monster hunter 4 I don't have it yet. But if I did I would choose the charge blade
You forgot to discuss the three types of gunlances (normal, long, and spread) each having a different amount of shells and shell attack power.
Please could you make an advanced Gunlance guide like you did for charge blade I would be vvv.interested to learn more :D
you can also reload the gunlance when jumping off something
I've been a GS master race user from gen 2 to gen 3. now I look up the gun lance and I feel really astonished by how much this weapon can do. the move-set of it is amazing. and the weapon is just really cool , specially those reload and slam/release attacks. Super helpful! Thanks!
love it. ne of my best wepons
THANK YOU SIR!
I'm gonna start using the gunlance and be the squall leonhart of monster hunter
You forgot to Mention you can do wyvern fire after a slam instead of all your ammo
Gonna miss wyrmstake canon and wirebug skills
Thanks for the video! I wasn't aware of the shelling-to-slam jump attack. Do they even mention it anywhere ingame?
Muh-muh-muh-massive damage!
Gunlances hop back is bigger than lances
i found out through accident that you can hit x-a after lance slam to use wyvern fire
this is nice to know, thnx n.n
+Ayrton Klassen welcome
when using gunlance dont forget to say stabshot
Im playing mhfu and that moveset looks soo good FUs gl is too simple
How many evades can you combine together with the gl in 4ult?
You never showed she'll damage or WF damage, only % bonus for skills. I want to know how much each shell does and if it's worth having a skill to add more or if % bonus is better. u 4 got 2 menchin u can run off a ledge hold r and x+a and u will do a powerful slam that will knocked out monsters
And you forgot how to English.
Sorry 😓
+The Mystery Box lol
what lance and armor is he using in the video?
that song in the end.. whats the name of it please :D
what armor and weapon is that
what is the armor set you have equipped?
gamerpro8854 I know this was posted 7 months ago, but I thought I might as well tell you. I believe it may be the Brute Tigrex Armor.
I wanna ask.. i have monster hunter portable 3rd in my psp.. how can i use these paintball, poison, thunder ammos for my own bone gunlance? It always uses the normal ammos.. I want to use them it's going to waste...
SamPlushyFive
those ammos are for bowguns. gunlance always uses normal ammo

***** That must be the case, cuz there is no other explanation.
Quick question do you get to name the felynes? i really dont want to have a felyne with my name, it will get confusing or distracting
Yeah you do, right at the beginning of the game you get to name your main Palico :)
Okay cool, thank you
+Arekkz Gaming do u get to change your main palico's name after u already selected one
+Andrew Farley nope, after you've named it, it's stuck with it
also, any palico you find in the field gives you the option to rename then when you hire them
I think ur gunlancing is wrong lol I don't do an evasion style I do the guard style the slam is my bread and butter with the shots alternating the wyvern fire cool down periods but that's just me

Could you do a tutorial for the bow?
