Raptor98 Hahah, yeah. Some of the funniest shit I've seen in a while. I wonder how fellow hunters would feel if a GL actually did that... Maybe the popcorn GL,
Seltas Helm X Kaiser Mail X Agnaktor Vambraces X Seltas Waist X Vangis greaves X +5 handicraft +4 artillery (+4 minimal handicraft 2 slots for same effect) He gemmed in for evasion +1 instead of guard. but assuming you have a handicraft +4 (3 slots ideal) charm. 3 artillery gems in charm, 3 in legs, 1 in vambraces. Guard +3 gems in everything else. This will give you: Razor Sharp Sharpness +1 Artillery God Guard +2 To compare. He put +3 evade into arms, body, helm, and weapon instead of guard to give himself evasion +1 he also put artillery +2 into his weapon because his charm did not have enough artillery (needed 2 more).
Metalmine i've been using quick sheathing. it gets me out of some nasty situations, but i reckon it's not the most optimal skill to have with gunlances. i also have Guard +2, Light Eater and Defense Up M. All from a D. Hermitaur armor set and a charm with sheathing +6 and two slots. for G1 quests (i'm G1 still), it's been doing fine, but it's troublesome against monsters with multiple hitting AoE attacks.
An easy alternative to this set is seltas x, esurient z, seltas x, kaiser, vangis and a handicraft +5 three slot talisman. It has all those skills and attack up small. If you have a better talisman you might be able to get another skill by sacrificing a few points in artillery and maybe mixing it differently.
I avidly use the GL in 3U and outside of the new stuff implemented in 4U I can safely say that I learned something new. Your guides are the best I've seen on the Monster Hunter series. Keep it up! :)
I know that this video is older, but I decided to get back into MH4U with Generations coming out soon and went back to my old main, the Gunlance. I was watching I noticed you left out a useful combo for massive damage to monsters that are stuck in place. After the Full Burst on normal or long you can hold x+a and execute a wyvernfire in that same combo.
Gaijin, you nailed it. I was especially looking forward to this one, and it's great, exactly what I was hoping it would be. Keep up the awesome work, man!
I would like to add the fact that combos of X after X+A puts you directly into guarding position. Since I'm a Guard Gunlancer, I feel the need to share that...
I can't wait for a Dual Blade guide (if you make one) to see how much my main weapon has changed. I hear there are a couple changes to stuff like demon mode. Speaking of demon mode, wouldn't it be the sweetest shit if the purple and red aura that surrounds you during demon mode formed into horns, wings, and a tail? Even if they were small, that would be the coolest shit ever.
So, what's interesting is I loved using the hammer, but I think I'm gonna main gunlance, and these tutorials have helped immensely with that. I've actually been thinking of making these weapon "cheat sheets" i guess, mostly based off the guides, with written button-to-action guides, combos and strategies for said weapons.
The R-Forward-A attack seems like such a little thing, but it really made GunLance A HELL of a lot more fun to play with. Just, being able to rush in and do a shell attack on a monster that your stabs would bounce off of, or to punish a roar after guarding it with a charged shell. It's great.
Since Ala was delayed to TBD for Iceborne and I ran out of stuff to do in that game (just grinding Guiding lands but I can do that any time) I'm going to start a fresh save in MH4U, the game where finally I found my true main weapon: Gunlance. Watching this before starting my new save
I see you know about the charge scoop to shell interrupt, but forgot to mention it in the video. Also to note, Wyvern Fire can be combed into after both a lance slam as well as the 3rd upwards thrust (you'll get no visual indicator for this, so the timing is fairly easy to mess up), which means that you can go into a Wyvern Fire very easily whenever you see your chance in a combo.
The scream after every burst. Such win. I'm new at playing the Gunlance and this guide is friggin awesome! (I main IG, sub CB) I find Gunlance somewhat fun and quirky. :) Thanks!
That scream at 0:21 ran chills down my spine, I alt f4ed the my webbrowser.. I then selected past that point.. didnt hear the sound again and silently freaked out in my living room.
I started playing, but I really enjoy the lance watching you inspired me. I don't see many lancers online I hope to get the hang of it you made it look so easy! Subscribed!
nice evading, and nice guide. one thing though; you forgot to include the X+A jump attack from sheathed and the forward X jump attack which both do a jumping slam. it also leads to full burst and the forward X jump attack even reloads one shell.
was going to say that, also the step in stab (forward X) is weird going up ledges, it can sometimes transition into the jump slam, and going down ledges at the correct distance it can attack then drop down for the slam you can also Wyvern Fire from a slam or after the full burst, and a minimal note is that any evade can reload, side evade aswell.
One jumping attack that was missed in this: If you're jumping with your weapon sheathed (dashing off a ledge, jumping off a wall, etc.) hit R+X+A and you'll unsheathe straight into a slamming jump attack, which you can then follow up with burst fire as soon as you land.
jp mesquita Just the "slam" part of the attack. But the burst followup is good when you don't trigger a mount or if you fall just short of your target.
Dexcat i'd say that using the burst follow up, then climbing back up the ledge and doing it again does more damage and saves more time than mounting, then bursting. and thank you! i've been wondering if there was any jump attack that wasn't the aerial poke.
Something to know that isn't showcased is that after a Lance Slam, instead of a Full Burst, if you press X+A then Wyvern's Fire is used. Handy to combo into sometimes.
gaijin hunter Hey Gaijin! just wanted to congratulate you for your spike in views and subs, your an amazing hunter with a lot of good knowledge, your rare in terms of you tubers. i remember watching your videos when they are less then 100 views, right there i could see it in your content that you were under appreciated. keep it up man! i hope all this sharing and liking I've been doing is helping out
I remember back in mhfu, I used a gunlance for most of low rank until I hit Khezu urgent quest. One of my favourite moves was to wait for the monster to sleep, place LBBs all over his head, then use wyvern’s fire on the bombs to set them off. It almost always killed them immediately, or it only took one hit after that. Good times.
I played once with GL in Arena because there wasn't much else to take. And I didn't realize that this weapon have so much combos. I did not really like it because you're slow and you can't roll but I guess I can give it a try seeing how "complex" this weapon can become
You forgot to mention that you can do the wyvern fire after the overhead GL slam by holding R + X+ A right after the slam, other than that it's a great tutorial, good job !
I've made a concept weapon called Gun Sword on the MH Fanon Wiki. I've always thought of that, but the Gunlance it's too heavy 4 that. My concept however, that's a possible idea to it! I would be glad if u check it out! :D
I thought I learned everything about gunlance from playing for a while, I didn't know about "charged shots" though, I only knew about the stab + stab + slam + shoot combo, wyvern's fire and the main stabbing attacks
That scream bro lols for days! BTW Idk cuz it's not in U.S. yet but on 3U after Lance slam you can do the wavering fire as well. Hope it's still in lol it was a good flurry for a trapped monster ^ω^
I think you forgot to mention you can combo into a Wyvern's fire after the slam instead of a burst too. Great Guide though! I like how you explained shelling I was always flustered by the number charts.
My biggest hurdle to getting along with the gunlance is mobility. Unlike the greatsword, where you constantly sheath and unsheathe, there's much more unsheathed time with the gunlance. So with monsters like Nyrscylla, who are constantly moving in and out of range, it's more difficult for me to land combos. Fighting Zinogre with gunlance is real fun, though.
I used to absolutely f$#%ing hate gunlance and its control scheme, but after watching this again... I'm in love. I have found salvation in blowing the everliving shet out of a monster when it's downed, and oohhhh boy are there a lot of tricks behind this one. (I'm saying that gunlance is not bad and it should really be used more often)
Been wanting to get back into the weapon that got me through the bits of G rank I had to solo in MH3U, And I'm glad to find I can be a lot better at it lol. Best I knew back then was Tank'n Spank, Normal GL's had good slam bursts and Long Gl's had the best wyvernfire. Beyond that I used it like a gimped lance with the occasional explosion. No better time to improve like the present
Galang Widjaya I didn´t even get a dod dam Zinogre plate, but for some magic I managed to get like 5 Umbrage, I hope to get the same luck with the Stygian Skymerald.
Thanks a lot for the guides, and I have a question: in mh4u, is it easy to see whether you have hit a big monster with your shell or not? like, are there any new (or better) visual indication for that? I'm currently practicing on mh3p, and sometimes I'm not really sure that I hit with my shell or not, because there was no flame effect on the monster (even though it should be in the shell's range). I've been shelling as close as possible to make sure that it won't miss, but that's not stylish (and not efficient imo) :( So...looking forward to your answer! ^_^
Fire on the monste Or you can see a withe flash effect it means that u hittet the monster When use full burst the game can just show 3 fires but you should know that it hittet al the 5,6, or four shells (assuming yu got load up)
Try this trick for a mobile quickburst-gunlancer: When the monster is at far range, un-draw the weapon, run towards it(R+forward) then in order press X (thrust), A (fire), A (reload), X (Slam), and A (Burst) Use it only for openings that a monster wont hit you. Gunlancing is very fun to learn any random tricks that works anytime..
@@isaacsteele7986 I know this comment is even older. But in order to do that, you'd need to stand still and undraw. Stabbing would undraw your weapon and the combo while still doing damage.
u probably already been told this: you can wyvern fire after lance slam, and if you use the running thrust (forward + X) off an edge you quick reload + air attack. Gunlance has 3 jump attacks which is pretty neat.
WOAAAHHH!!!!!! I got the demo for MH4U and didnt know we could do jump shell linkl to full burst... so many secrets... wonder what the long sword has.. like, I used it and didn't see anything different at all lol
It can do triple slash from the spirit combo (before the final spirit hit) if u press r when jumping midair. Slick move ^^. Overall LS become more versatile in 4U, alot more fluid
Vebri Valentino Actually Longsword was nerfed quite a bit in 4U. U no longer can spam the spirit attacks, becuz it now resets you're spirit guage if it get's down too much. Also, it's now a medium-high damage weapon, other than a high-very damage one. :/
ShadowBlazeroPT is it? doest take away the experience for me though. still kills monsters quite fast and combos are super fluid now :). and i did say more versatile not stronger :)
you forgot to mention in the video, the Gunlance shield is stronger than the Lance shield, allowing you to tank attacks that would flinch a normal lance user without guard skills, you also take less damage when guarding attacks. Also Normal shelling is short range, Long shelling shoots the farthest away from you in a straight line, and Wide shelling is a very wide shot, reaches longer than Normal. The same applies to Wyvern Fire.
one combo you forgot to list and one im really surprised you missed. after full slam you can go striaght into wyveren fire by hitting x+a. because of the knockback it better to fprward+y off a ledge, shell, fullslam, then wyvern fire.
+Malcolm Manire He forgot to mention that you can also reload by holding R and pressing A. I actually prefer this reload because it allows me to reload immediately instead of backhopping first.
The numbers you use when talking about each attack, is that the percentage of attack power each attack does? Also not mentioned was the ability to use wyvern's fire after a slam instead of the burst fire by pressing X+A, and also after the upswing and two upward pokes the same way. Second may not be particularly useful in most instances but a nice trick to know, but after the slam is especially good with a long shot type GL.
Can anybody fill me in on a few things I've been wondering about Gunlance? 1. Is shelling affected in any way by Affinity? 2. Is shelling damage effected by sharpness? 3. If you hone a Gunlance for Life, can the shelling proc the healing effect?
Zenfirox Hawkeyes oh ? Then I used to sharpen it for nothing then ^^. No use for whetstones if you're good with the shells. that means even in orange lvl, the shells still have the same DMG. Was it different back in MH3U perhaps?
mind that below yellow (or green not sure) sharpness you can't shell! same goes for wyvern fire... that's the reason why i don't absolutely need sharpness+1 on my wide-gl setup
One specific note that I think was missed? (Or I'm blind) You can cancel the 'running thrust' into a running shell by pressing A during the run. So forward + X -> A is a shell instead of a thrust. This does NOT cancel into the air shell attack however.
Hello gaijin - I don't know if it has been pointed out to you or not but the Gunlance has a "second" draw attack. While running if you press X+A you will immediately go into a block and stop moving. It's not a traditional draw attack, and it's a normal feature of the gunlance, but you can now access it from a full run which I think is a change in MH4U. Not entirely sure on if it truly is a change or not, but you didn't point it out in your tutorial and it might be helpful to others to know you can do that from a full run.
Question: Are the bombs by themselves powerful when used on monsters that are awake? Appreciate the tutorials videos btw! Plan on using every weapon type.
Great tutorial. But you did forget a move. pressing X+A after the Lance Slam will let you begin charging the Wyvern Fire faster without the need to block first. But still great tutorial.
Gaijin, if my gunlance doesn't scream like that when I burst or wyvern fire, I will sue. So friggin great, many thanks for the tutorial!
Just have a YT video of it playing on your computer and be ready to hit the play button :P
Raptor98 Hahah, yeah. Some of the funniest shit I've seen in a while. I wonder how fellow hunters would feel if a GL actually did that... Maybe the popcorn GL,
It'd be a hit or miss weapon. Definitely be a hit for me Haha.
You forgot to mention that after doing a slam you can press X+A to combo a wyvern fire instead of finishing the full burst
Seltas Helm X
Kaiser Mail X
Agnaktor Vambraces X
Seltas Waist X
Vangis greaves X

That goat scream during the wyvern's fire almost made me crap myself laughing
so what about that scream?
"I had to get used to the gunlances large and slow 3rd hit"

your videos and tumblr thingy guides have been a gospel for me learning thus game. thanks dude!
Ok this video really helped me with Gunlances and I thank you for that but what the hell was up with the screaming goat during the shots?
wolfclaw719 Its for funny.
That's his reaction when doing sweet moves
Unfortunately its the only thing bad about his videos, as its quality standard is up to par
I see you know about the charge scoop to shell interrupt, but forgot to mention it in the video. Really really impressed with the effort u put in the video and notes u did beforehand! Subscribed bro!
This was actually a great tutorial. I'm a new hunter and like the gunlance best, so it's really cool to see ways to boost my play.
Let me just say right here that these guides are absolutely amazing, and very interesting even to veteran players like myself. Thank you very much.
The scream after every burst. Such win.

also why long shoot without skill normal and charged are same values? forgot to calculate it?
Rewatching this again to play MH4u. Haha
well guy, you've earned yourself at least 1 new sub with these amazing guides! I've really enjoyed them and hope you make more.
One jumping attack that was missed in this:

wow, what a incredible tutorial, I learn a lot... thanks dude :-D Im a proud Gunlancer hunter and now I will practice all what I have learned from you
Thx for the tutorial so many cool weapons its hard to decide
The little screams are hilarious, please do more of those. *snort*

I think we can all agree the Gore Magala gunlance is the best looking weapon in the entire game.
I don't really like the design I expected more tbh
Also you can combo from slam to Wyvern Fire, although i am not sure it would really add up to dps.
You forgot to mention that you can do the wyvern fire after the overhead GL slam by holding R + X+ A right after the slam, other than that it's a great tutorial, good job !
Thx a lot man, was looking foward to a gunlance guide.
I think GL needs a jumping attack, just like rocket jump but shell jump

Dash juice + lance = mmmmmm
Love that GL is still slow but awesome
the demo is great for trying out all the stuff, gotta get good before the final game launches!
on mh3u, i tried using gunlance just for fun. when the monster's sleeping, put bombs, then use wyvern's fire. it was gloriously magnificent.
I first started using the gunlance when I compared it to RWBY. beast.

You should do a series of these for each weapon and put it up on kickstarter or patreon. Take my money!

Also Normal shelling is short range, Long shelling shoots the farthest away from you in a straight line, and Wide shelling is a very wide shot, reaches longer than Normal. The same applies to Wyvern Fire.
...I regret watching this with headphones.
That scream cracks me up always
one combo you forgot to list and one im really surprised you missed. after full slam you can go striaght into wyveren fire by hitting x+a. because of the knockback it better to fprward+y off a ledge, shell, fullslam, then wyvern fire.
+Malcolm Manire He forgot to mention that you can also reload by holding R and pressing A. I actually prefer this reload because it allows me to reload immediately instead of backhopping first.
Saderich The Rich Ah. I was wrong.Still back stepped first, which isn't necessary/
Ok, need to find a way to mod that scream in during every wyvernfire
those screams made the video better for me haha
I'm not sure if they changed it but you can reload after any evade in 3U, so if you dont want to backhop you can just sidestep
My favorite weapon, thanks for video!
you and I use the gunlance alike, I use evasion all day ^^
The numbers you use when talking about each attack, is that the percentage of attack power each attack does? Also not mentioned was the ability to use wyvern's fire after a slam instead of the burst fire by pressing X+A, and also after the upswing and two upward pokes the same way. Second may not be particularly useful in most instances but a nice trick to know, but after the slam is especially good with a long shot type GL.
I know this wasn't mentioned in the video, but you can't use shells when sharpness drop below yellow (red/orange). Just to throw it out there.
Dunno if anyone mentioned it cause it wasn't in the video but after a slam or burst you can combo into wyvern fire.
Can anybody fill me in on a few things I've been wondering about Gunlance?
1. Is shelling affected in any way by Affinity?
2. Is shelling damage effected by sharpness?
3. If you hone a Gunlance for Life, can the shelling proc the healing effect?
Joey Schuppe 1. nope, 2. luckily nope and 3. still have to check but i believe yes!
Zenfirox Hawkeyes I thought the shell damage went up according to your shaprness lvl. But maybe I was wrong. it has to be verified
Tanryoku Rockbuster nope it only depends on your shelling Level! Most GL have Level 4 or 5 (max)
Super interested in learning this weapon but I've been a DS main so the transfer of mobility is gonna be tough
One specific note that I think was missed? (Or I'm blind)
You can cancel the 'running thrust' into a running shell by pressing A during the run. So forward + X -> A is a shell instead of a thrust. This does NOT cancel into the air shell attack however.
That wyvern fire is so funny woth the scream XD
Heh... time to master a new weapon. Thanks for the tutorial!
loved this tutorial really helped me out thanks
Gaijin do dual swords next plz also awesome tutorials
Oh god i decided to watch this video while fighting the seltas queen why
Great tutorial. But you did forget a move. pressing X+A after the Lance Slam will let you begin charging the Wyvern Fire faster without the need to block first. But still great tutorial.
