This is my most anticipated Star Wars omni. Dark Empire was the first Star Wars comic I read and it blew my mind. Can’t wait to reread it and finally check out the adaptation of the heir to the empire trilogy.
I cannot wait for a Star Wars: Legacy to be collected into omnibus form. It is my favorite Star Wars comic and I want more people to read it. It was great seeing someone dare to go 100 years after Episode 6 and do something new and fresh.

Cam Kennedy’s art is legendary! This omnibus is a must for Star Wars fans.
I remember going to a small comic con in Austin back in the 90s. Cam Kennedy was there and his line was packed. The other artist that was set up next to him had no line at all. I felt bad for him. Some guy named Greg Capullo, who had recently done his first Spawn issues. How times have changed :)

I will say Omar, that amongst hardcore Star Wars EU fans Dark Empire is actually seen as pretty low in terms of quality. It’s more nostalgic and groundbreaking than an actually well written story.
This is because it really retcons a lot and doesn’t fit thematically with the rest of the EU, the Thrawn trilogy and the eventual Prequel Trilogy of films.
The Star Wars Creators considered actually having it be non-canon to the EU until a specific author referenced the events in the sequel to the Thrawn Trilogy, the Jedi Academy Trilogy.
Indeed, per my comment, Dark Empire really isn't that great of a Star Wars story. Dark Empire II and Empire's End really only existed to tie up the loose ends and created more confusion. The emperor living on in clones was a pretty silly idea (of course the sequel trilogy would use it) that rendered Vader's sacrifice meaningless.

This isn't quite accurate -- the West End Games RPG sourcebooks actually integrated the Thrawn Trilogy and _Dark Empire_ together years before the _Jedi Academy_ trilogy was published (for example, there's at least one short story bridging the events between Timothy Zahn's _The Last Command_ with _Dark Empire_ #1 in the _Dark Empire Sourcebook_ ), and Lucasfilm always considered the two to be of equal canon-status right from the jump.

Oh man, Mike Baron had an IMPOSSIBLE task when adapting these, and I must say that he and his team absolutely NAILED it!

This was delayed so many times I wondered if it was ever getting printed. Thrawn Trilogy and Dark Empire in one book, this will be the best thing ever. I hate Disney Star Wars but I need this book.

Dark Empire is my favorite Star Wars comic story. Hands down

Dark Empire and The THRAWN TRILOGY put Star Wars back on the map in the 90's. They are the foundation of the EU now Legends. All of this as a whole is > than DISNEY Sequel Trilogy and comics.
Finally. Dark Empire Trilogy is so, so good. Love the art. Anxious to receive my copy. Great overview btw 😊.

Great video as always, Omar! I'm one of the people that was a bit taken aback by that Euro influenced artwork you mentioned. I think I sold that epic, and I have ordered this omnibus, I'm looking forward to giving that artwork another shot in oversized format and probably liking it more this time.

Out of the many Star Wars omnis released, this seems to be one of the more essential books. And another Donnelly print! I was happy with their build of the Thor omni so I’m tempted to pick this up depending on how the budget holds up. Thanks Omar!

Love that Cam Kennedy art. He did a lot of work for 2000AD, so it makes sense that you’d get that more European vibe. Still debating whether to get this one, as my experience with SW omnis has been very hit or miss (excellent like Old Republic 1, just ok like New Republic 1, terrible like second half of Empire 2). May just get the upcoming Thrawn Trilogy TPB and wait forever for the Dark Empire reprint, although that art would be great in oversized. Sigh.

I was never happy that Dark Empire used the comic trope that dead characters don’t stay dead. Bringing back both Palpatine and Boba Fett was too much. The Thrawn trilogy is great but better in the novels.

The ugly black frame continues to make me despair. they got the first couple omnibuses so right for Legends and now they've all got either smaller covers or chopped off covers. I'm really glad I picked up the first print of the KotOR omnibus, since I fear for what the reprint will do to the cover.
Hopefully we can get a old republic reprint soon.
I think it is announced already, so it is on its way!

Just started my path towards NJO. I've planned to read Dark Empire online, but fuck I'll order this even if it is expensive hahaha
the most important omnibus after berserk and savage conan ones. one of a few comic book deep story come closer to berserk story and pefection art. cam kenendy so underrated. he also have short batman comic. best star wars story ever made only empire strikes back movie good like this not others. people compare beserk to vaganbond vinland saga etc but in reailtiy this dark empire is closest thing. also vampire huter d manga smilar. this it only omnibus deseve to put under berserk. then savage sword conan maybe. not others. dont know any vampire hutner d manga coming omnibus. suppose to be anime first never come.
Got mine ordered at my LCS, so keen. I will say though that I would’ve preferred not to have Boba Fett on the spine. Don’t know if he plays a massive role in the stories collected, but I think Thrawn or Sidious would’ve been better right? 😛

A whole lot of Star Wars omnis lately, it's an expensive summer.
Dark Empire is an iconic trilogy and VERY important, but I’ve never considered it a truly great story if you sit down and think about it. The emperor having a clone just introduced too many plot holes. I consider it good and important in that relaunched Star Wars mania but as an actual story…not so much. Dark Empire II and Empires End are honestly pretty bad. Also wasn’t a fan of Cam Kennedys artwork. The adaptation of the Thrawn trilogy is excellent even if it didn’t match how I saw it from years of reading the books. That adaption gets a 7/10.

Dark Empire doesn’t really fit with the rest of the EU or the Prequel Trilogy. I like to read it as its own standalone where the Thrawn Trilogy didn’t happen.
The Jedi Academy Trilogy obviously negates this, where it references Dark Empire and Thrawn pretty heavily.
@@TheChris-lw8eo Yeah, only the first book of the Thrawn trilogy was actually finished when Dark Empire came out in 1991, so Veitch could only very vaguely mention (like Jacen and Jaina) some things from those stories.
The Thrawn Trilogy is fortunately getting its own printing this year in a paperback edition
Does this complete all the New Republic era material? Or will there be more omnis? I think it was mentioned that “The Empire” would have 4 omnis total? “The Rebellion” and “The New Republic” material both have two omnis, will they both have more?
I'm going to say there will be 1 more New Republic Omnibus that collects:
-All of New Republic Epic Collection 6
-All of New Republic Epic Collection 7, except for the Boba Fett comics, which are collected here.
-Everything in the upcoming New Republic Epic Collection 8
art doesn't look as good as the first vol, but it is a must have for the Thrawn storyline

Do you need to read vol 1 to understand any of this?
No, Vol. 1 is not pre-required reading. The Thrawn Trilogy was the foundation of the Expanded Universe before Disney. It wasn't the first Expanded Universe story, but it came before all the comics in Vol. 1 as did Dark Empire. Dark Empire I was the first Dark Horse Star Wars comic.
@@robd9921 ahh ok. I was always wondering do I need volume 1 or not. But why did they call volume 1 if it all takes place after this one?
@oath312 Chronologically in-universe the stories in Vol. 1 take place before this volume, but the stories in this volume were published first in real life.
The Volume 1 stories take place about 1 year after Return of the Jedi. These stories take place 5-6 years after Return of the Jedi.
