The reason for the fireball is because the 22 WMR was initially designed for a 17 inch rifle barrel, so the powder is going out the end of the pistol barrel while it is still burning. The pressure for the WMR and 22LR are exactly the same at 24,000 psi. I've got the 3 22 Mags in the safe (revolver, semi pistol, semi rifle) Looks like I might soon have another. - Also need to get a lever gun in 22 wmr.
For example, if someone shoots your tire with either .22LR or WMR, the resulting psi will be the same. As to muzzle energy, Magnum is over doble that of LR.

Reached out to Kel-Tec sent the gun back, no cost out of my pocket and they resolved my issue's.With the Smith&Wesson I've shot just a hundred rounds so far with no issues. @@tangolima6462 keltec has great idea....if only they worked. i call that a golden opportunity. though the foldy 9mm carbine thing i feel looks atrocious. This Near PMR30 seems pretty nice though.
For a 22WMR pistol, I recommend shooting Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel 40 gr JHP. It is actually designed for the shorter barrel. You get less fireball because it burns off in the barrel. When shooting a pistol with ammo designed for a rifle, you get a lot less velocity and a much bigger fireball.
I have to wonder what Speer has done to claim it's designed for a shorter barrel. Or is it just marketing to catch the recent introduction of new WMR's hitting the market. Not putting them down but the only thing would be the powder, it seems.
Just picked one up about a week ago and it shoots the heavy stuff great! The lighter stuff not so much. Still, it's a great gun with more power than I would have thought. I lubed it up some and it ran the light stuff too. Drops steel plates just fine. Not as serious as my 10mm but that is a different animal all together.

It would be interesting to know what the actual velocity is coming out of that handgun. The listed velocity is assuming a longer barrel like you would get from a riffle. I have had a Kel Tec PMR 30 for a few years and have put a few thousand rounds down range without any failure to feed. The keep is properly loading the mags. I look forward to seeing a head to head comparison between this and the PMR 30. This looks like it was inspired by the PMR 30.
@davidmack4185 Yeah, I'm having a bit of a hard time believing him, but will give the benefit of the doubt because internet. I'm in love with my Walther WMP as well. 15 Round mag limit is fine considering some States like Colorado have a 15 rd mag limit, so don't see me buying a S&W to take back to Colorado when I visit my family there.
I have had the PMR for about 12 years, also a CMR for about 8 years. Last week I ordered two steel feed ramps from MCarbo. If that fixes the feed issues withthe PMR, then I am keeping it. The feed issues with the CMR are rare, but does happen. If the feed issues are not solved, then one of these pistols will be next.
I did the entire PMR Mcarbo upgrade kit, with the stainless steel feed lips. Mine runs like a champ! I replaced everything myself and it was difficult getting everything to line up together correctly putting it back, but I did it, and I'm proud to carry it, with my drone bag, when I'm out flying and it's nice to have a reliable pistol with lots of extra ammo just in case...
It is a bit tricky to do the Mcarbo kit but the video is very good. Mine didn’t run at first but the screws were too tight- and I really didn’t think I over tightened them.
I like 22 Magnum and I have a rifle and pistol chambered in 22 WMR. You are gaining 40 ft lbs of energy in a 5" pistol barrel 22 mag over a 22 LR. It's significant. But 22 WMR really shines out of a longer barrel; doubling and nearly tripling the energy of 22LR. Ballistics by the Inch has great test data. It's worth thinking about.
.22wmr has the same pressure as the .22LR. But uses a slower powder. Since the case is very long, this creates problems in blowbacks. Tapping gas from such a low pressure usually don't work well either, since it tends to get dirty fast. At least that is my understanding of this.
You are exactly right. They both have very similar pressure numbers, which is around 24,000 psi. The only difference is the .22 magnum has a longer case to accept more powder. Therefore, the .22 magnum hits harder and has a flatter trajectory.
@@CandidZulu Yes, it does use a slower burning powder, but the longer case on the magnum allows it to shoot flatter and hit harder, because of more powder capacity on .22 magnum.

But my Smih & Wesson M&P .22 mag pistol, in 250 rounds, and has never had a stoppage of failure to fire. I like it for its accuracy, especially with most 40 grain cartridges. Also the recoil is very light.
Just got one a few weeks ago and was really excited. Remington ammo jammed like crazy (FTF) and so did Federal 50 grain HP. I did some honing of the bolt face and the ramp then the Remingtons feed now but Federal 50gr ammo is still a no go. Hornady 30-40 grain ammo works just fine. CCI 40 grain ammo is great too. Magazines are flimsy plastic. I can only get 29 rounds in mine with any brand of ammo and I suspect the mags could be a cause of feeding issues. Accuracy at 25yds is nothing to brag about. My trigger is a lawyer trigger. It's, heavy with creep and a lot of travel on the reset. I love the pistol in that caliber but a little more work needs to go into that pistol. S&W - plastic mags?? Come on Smith! I see some have had better experiences and mine may be a fluke but I am NOT happy with my M&P 22WMR - yet!.
i must have just gotten lucky, as my PMR-30 hasn't had any problems since day 1, no aftermarket kits, all factory and will magdump 30grain cci tnt ammo all day without any issues. ya its a huge fireballer, but seems to be a fluke as most seem to have problems.
In my opinion I think it's just a hit or miss with quality control with the PMR-30 after sending mine back to Kel-Tec they resolved my issues now the gun runs flawlessly. I love shooting my Smith & Wesson 22 magnum and my Kel-Tec. Both of them throw a very nice Fireball
I love the S&W polymer line. My only complaint is how the front end of the polymer lower tends to droop, whether out of the box or after some shooting with a hot barrel, I don't know. I'm also curious what the purpose of the rectangular cut-outs above the picatinny rail on the lower is. If only for weight reduction, I wish they would have left the smooth lines. I think I can lift that little bit of polymer.
What are you talking about? I have several polymer s&w pistols, and none of them nor any that I've ever seen have had that problem. I'm literally holding a first Gen m&p that has fired no joke 15,000 rds, most of which in competition, and it looks brand new. I'm calling BS.
@@BD-fx8wv You can see it in picture after picture, video after video. Towards the front the polymer is drooping like the gun has a mouth. Maybe you've been lucky or just have the shorter pistols. @@TacShooter open my eyes? Okay dude. Maybe provide proof, since you've seen so much. I looked around and haven't found shit. Enlighten me. I'm assuming you're just a glock fanboy that can't bear the fact that they paid as much, if not more, for a lesser gun.
Curiosity has got me, do you really get the performance out of a 22 mag. from a shorter barrel? Definitely gives you more muzzle flash and noise but does it really give you anymore punch?
My next .22 magnum. I have the keltec PMR-30, Bond Arms snake slayer, High Standard derringer and Ruger 10/22 .22 magnum. I like the .22 magnum...fun round at bullseye because of the fireball and its loud at an indoor range....lol.
I really like this weapon and would love to own one, but I am baffled (no pun intended) on why they did not thread the barrel for a suppressor. The new barrel system is almost identical to the new S&W 5.7 and its barrel is threaded. Maybe (hopefully) S&W will come out with a threaded barrel for this model or maybe the Gen. 2... Thanks for your videos, I really enjoy them and you do a great job explaining the pros & cons of each weapon you feature in your videos. God bless you for your diligence.
When you compare all of the .22 WMR pistols, please spend some time on the magazines and their reliability. My PMR-30 runs a lot better thanks to MCARBO but the magazines can still be a pain.
This & the Springfield Echelon is my next pistol!!!! What a fun kick ass pistol!! The only thing is the price of .22 win mag, I have been buying it non stop almost 3 years, I have a bolt action wimpy 5 round magazine .22 win mag to match my son's .22 winchester Rascal!

It’s because they print rifle barrel velocity on the boxes, some rifle cartridges ammo makers are so deceptive they don’t even tell you barrel length of supposed velocity claims. It could be 16”- 20”-24”
I love mine, we shot 100 rounds through it and we're laughing the whole time...we had so much fun. No recoil and you could drive a tack at 20 yards...so crazy accurate.

Plinkster is as Plinkster does! Fun video. Thanks.
In your own opinion which is better: the Glock 19X or the .22 Magnum pistol?
You can "call BS", but I know what I am seeing with my eyes, and your specimens do not refute my observations in other specimens. Open your eyes from here on and you'll see what I'm talking about.
@@markgray5717 It's more punch than a .22LR, if that's what you're asking.
Your mic is insanely good at picking up the timber of the gunshots
Love the blast effect on this thing. Think I'm going to get one.
One of my favorites was the Ruger 22mag. peacemaker!❤.
My next .22 magnum. I have the keltec PMR-30, Bond Arms snake slayer, High Standard derringer and Ruger 10/22 .22 magnum. I like the .22 magnum...fun round at bullseye because of the fireball and its loud at an indoor range....lol.
Your smile says a lot right off the bat
I can’t pay over $600 for a 22 mag. My Walther was only $400 and it’s a beast
Hell, they should thread the barrel for a flash suppressor!
I agree, I've had the Walther and the Kel Tec but without a suppressor, count me out!
Bet 22plinkster keeps this one.
When you compare all of the .22 WMR pistols, please spend some time on the magazines and their reliability.
My PMR-30 runs a lot better thanks to MCARBO but the magazines can still be a pain.
Looking forward to the walther comparison!
This is the video I've been waiting on since I heard about this gun. Very much ready to find one in my local gun store.
Wish they would make the Victory in .22 mag.
But this one looks good.
22 mag is pretty powerful I like it! like the cal. as well Its a great round
It’s the gun of the day I’ve seen two videos and one just got there’s so one more in a few days.
@22plinkster__ really
Looking forward to the comparison video. Thank you.
Looks like the PMR 30, loves this tac driver!
I have a smith 29 and this one i wanna buy the 29 is big heavy and I want to step down and this one speaks to me 2x the ammo half the size good stuff
I was looking at this on Yoki Stirrups video....I like this pistol, and love the caliber too.
Hoooo boooy yo the man I picked me 1 up yesterday. Have been a pmr 30 guy forever. Bit I can say s&w has knocked it out with this baby man its a fine 1 may have to sell the pmr 30 great vid KEEP THEM COMIN my friend.
i have a RIA 22 mag and really enjoy it. Run some different ammo through a chronograph and the numbers are slower than posted on the boxes. The numbers were closer when I used a 22 mag bolt action. Steve
It’s because they print rifle barrel velocity on the boxes, some rifle cartridges ammo makers are so deceptive they don’t even tell you barrel length of supposed velocity claims. It could be 16”- 20”-24”
some of these from S&W require a bit of buffing on the feed ramp. Some have a little lip\bur After a little sand paper they should cycle fine
Love your vids Brother, I always find them very informative & fun to watch. Keep up the awesome work you do. Peace & God bless🤠🙏🙏🙏
I love mine, we shot 100 rounds through it and we're laughing the whole time...we had so much fun. No recoil and you could drive a tack at 20 yards...so crazy accurate.
Now you just said that's the most reliable but when you did the Walter you did have zero malfunctions with that pistol I remember cuz I wanted to buy one but it didn't have a trigger safety
If you get a chance would love to see a review on the new Springfield .22 rifle.
Grear shooting!! Just picked up one of these new S&W .22 Magnums. Would you let me know exactly which Red-Dot you are using on your pistol?
Keltec is the beta tester for the industry lol. Glad to see SW came out with this 😊
Big fan of the .22 magnum round and love my Keltec PMR-30. Sure would love to see Ruger bring back the 10/22 magnum.
The fire ball on that thing 🔥👌🏼
I like it because of the capacity 31 rounds wow and the low recoil and with that barrel length I think it's not as loud as the 9mm
327 federal magnum.
Would love if S&W would take this 5.7/22 mag tempo barrel platform and chamber in 327 federal with an auxiliary recoil spring for 32 S&W long.
My favorite unicorn ammo. Love .327 federal.
I would like to have seen a chronograph test for velocity. I'm curious what the .22 magnum is out of a semi-auto handgun vs a rifle?
A 50 grain 22 mag round 😮thats insane. I want this gun😊
It's the only one that works.
Plinkster! Nice review. Good job on your success. I would love to get one of these .22mag's I would like something a little more compact as a backup. Is there a compact version of this s&w?
Dave... You're welcome.
I told them last week when SW posted their video that they needed to get one in your hands asap.
Ok, i know, they probably sent it to you several weeks ago. Hopefully they let you keep it. That let sootch keep his.
I wish they'd make some compact or subcompact 22 magnums
Wish you had talked about the magazines with a rimmed cartridge. How they fit, any issues loading...
Yes Yes Yes ❤😊
Great review enjoyed it thanks
My favorite magnum!!
I REALLY want this and the 5.7, but sadly I live in California, all I can do is hope the roster goes the way of the Dodo soon.
Or move to a freedom state like Texas.
@@davidbolduc828 why does everyone tho k it's that easy 🤔. 😂
KelTec PMR has been out for years. Great gun.
