I had issues with cci too. I never had problems with Hornady, specially with my 480 Ruger. Keep up the good work, makes me wanting to buy the M&P 22 magnum. GOD BLESS YOU That is all, carry on.🇺🇸⚓
Good video, Howard, THANK YOU. As you indicated, for decades I have been unwilling to use any rimfire weapon for lawful defensive purposes, due to system reliability issues. In addition, like you I have found .22LR to be more than sufficient for pest control. In the mid-1970’s, I lived in rural North Carolina, with concerns for my young daughter playing on our acreage that had a LOT of raccoons, copperheads, skunks, possums, and other critters; my inexpensive Winchester rifle and bulk, cheap .22LR eliminated this issue quite easily.
the hornady ammunition was designed with a fast powder to burned complete in short barrel hand gun, retaining very high velocity and they(s&w) recommend full metal jacket to avoid malfunction… they recommend not less if 49 grain to allow a heavy bullet like Federal 50 grain gases do the gas reload better…still retaining very good speed and punch related to 22 m cartridge…tempo system don’t allow reload until the protective being fire exit the barrel…
My Keltec PMR 30 had all kinds of issues when I first got it. I almost gave up on it. Spent a bunch of money on M*CARBO upgrades and it finally runs. Meanwhile my 1959 Ruger Single Six has never had an issue with 22 magnum.
My Kel Tec PMR30 had lots of problems initially. I asked the store I bought it from to return it to the factory, and since it came back it has been very reliable. The magazines are difficult to load correctly, so I am not using it much these days. I have a new model Ruger Single Six that I bought in the 1970’s. It really has a great trigger, and because it has a 6.5 inch barrel, the calculated energy with .22 magnum is relatively high (207 ft. lbs. if I recall correctly)
I bought the Walther version of this gun just before S&W announced this one. For my Walther WMP, its favorite ammo is the CCI Maxi Mag 40 gr JHP or TMJ. Hornady 30 gr vmax has noticeably softer recoil and will not reliably cycle. I agree .22 Magnum is not the best defensive caliber, though its better than a sharp stick. My WMP is a fun range gun, and rides in a chest rig for woods/ trail walks. Not worried about Bears where i live. Mostly for Coyotes and other vermin.
Another excellent review. I own exactly one .22 Magnum, a Ruger Convertable Single Six. It has never been fired with the magnum cylinder. Between my ambivilance toward the cartridge and the cost, I simply have no interest in it. I won't criticize those who like it but it just doesn't do anything for me.
Thank you for a great honest assessment. I also have this S&W pistol; I haven't had any of the malfunctions shown here. I've used both CCI and Hornady, both fed flawlessly but have greater accuracy with the Hornady ammo. Accuracy is ballpark not pinpoint from my experience with mine. Enjoyed your video.
In a few YT reviews of this pistol I saw the action covered in BRASS SHAVINGS! So when I got my M&P .22 mag I took the time to sand down and smooth all the sharp edges in the feed area with 220 grit wet or dry paper.. So far no brass cartridge case shavings AND no stoppages or failures to feed. FINGERS CROSSED. I do like the trigger on mine. It averages 3.65 pounds on a WHEELER digital gauge.
It would seem this gun and ammunition combination is, what Col. Cooper, (blessed be his name). would call " an answer looking for a question". Nice honest review and good shooting.
Nice review! I used to have a S&W 351PD. It's gone, but the ammo is still around. This pistol could help with that. I like the clean sight picture, too. 👍👍
My main reason for going to .22 wmr is the fact I use a Henry .22wmr rifle this way I never would have mixed ammo in my coat/pocket at the same time. As you know if they are close is size it may cause an issue. Thanks Tim Canada.
I tried several semi auto 22 magnum handguns and never really got the results I wanted out of them so I got the Taurus 942M 3 inch barrel 8 shot revolver and it runs great! It’s definitely less capacity but it’s a lot more reliable and enjoyable experience! I upgraded it with Houge Lamo Camo grips and Ameriglo night sights and it’s accurate and throws huge fireballs!
The Tempo barrel system was designed for the 5.7 x 28 cartridge. Using the gas operating system for a less powerful cartridge may lead to cycling issues
one of the few reviews I see where accuracy test is on paper and no just hittin 10x10 targets and saying gun is accurate...nicely done and above all it was real honest about firearm performance.
Short break in period ,running smooth with no issues , Ran 3 full mags three times with no issues. Invest in a loader ,try eday. Running Hornady 22 Magnum 30 Grain V-Max. Putting a Olight with green laser on it and planning for it to be my EDC
Cool video ,I do like those sights . But I’m still using 357 mag for defense purposes. I agree .22 lr is good enough for varmint . And yes the old m@p trigger the 2 piece felt better and had a cleaner break !
Thanks for this review, I have seen some others on the Smith & Wesson 22 magnum semi-auto that is out now. The revolver 648 6-inch barrel does not jam using different 22WMR cartridges and shoots very well :)
Definitely agree. I understand it has to be longer to accommodate the rounds but sheesh maybe they could have filled in a few places or added some grip groves or something it seems like one of their less engineered designs. Top end is kinda cool with the cutouts and rail, trigger looks nice. Kinda reminds me of a fancier slide swapped old kimber double stack 45
Bought mine back in July of 2023. Easy to rack and love the fireball that comes out of it. But after 800 rounds though it it started to failure to fire about every 3rd or 4rd round. Then failure to fire all the time no matter what ammunition brand I used. It feeds and ejects fine. So something is wrong with the firing pin. Sent it back to S &W a couple of weeks ago and haven’t heard from the yet. By the way mine had two white dots on the rear sights.
This video was great for myself as I am looking to get a .22wmr for target. My Question is have you tried the Walther WMP? I would like to see how you would compare them. hanks Tim S Canada.
I have the Walther WMP and it is ammo picky as well. Mine doesn't like anything under 40 grain, and it doesn't like all of those. I also have a red dot on mine and that could effect things, but CCI Maxi Mag runs great in mine and is the preferred ammo reccomended by Walther.
22 mag from a 5 - 6 inch barrel runs close to 22lr from a rifle. I'd love to see it tested for accuracy benched at 25 yards with an optic. Might make a decent squirrel gun if the accuracy is there. Give the new triggers some break-in time. My Shield Plus took about 300 rounds to smooth out & I've shot several sub 2 inch groups at 20 yards since then. But they can be a little rough when new.
Good morning HR. Is the multi piece barrel operating system anything like the floating chamber in the Colt Ace 22 conversion for the 1911? They would gum up pretty quickly. Black target sights may give better groups. The fiber optic seems more minute of water bottle desperado. Haven't seen them lately, your reputation must have scared them away.😂
I'm not sure how the Ace worked, but this one was clean to start with and it had a malfunction 3 rounds into testing. I meant to mention that cleaning the gas system (ie barrel/gas rings & sleeve) is another requirement for this pistol. By the way, I hear the desperados will be making an appearance soon. they never learn!
On the Ace the chamber was a 2 diameter section that fit into the back of the barrel. It's held by a tab at the bottom that allows a small amount of rearward motion. It acts like a short stroke piston with enough force to push back the steel slide. It also increased recoil to feel more like a larger cartridge. Most conversion units now have a lightweight aluminum slide that operates with simple straight blowback.
Nice review. I remember being at indoor range shooting on the end right on the wall. I shot 22 mag and my ears were ringing instantly somehow my electronic ear protection missed it? It's kind of loud. With the failure to chamber and failure to feed issues I thinks it's a pass. Thanks!
I have been watching your channel for a long time, but over the last two months every time I have to resubscribe to your channel so if losing subscriptions its YOUTube Love your content educational and unbiased thank you for what you do
it was this or my sig 322, i chose sig 322 since i love shooting cheaper but i love the extra power in the 22 mag though and have a Ruger Lcrx 22 mag 6 shot snub, has a 1 7/8 inch barrel and light with fast draw from concealment, the gun even with short barrel i got it up to 123 ft/lbs beating my Browning buckmark 22 with 5.5 inch barrel i got to max out at 117 ft/lbs, even though short barrels lose volocity they still do good, 30 grain v max is a loud fireball, size of a soft ball, some times i think its bark is worse then its bite, it gets people on range outdoor or indoor thinking its a 357 magnum, and for that reason any defense situation it will spook attackers thinking its a 357 magnum when its just faking it
To be sure, accuracy is paramount and a mag dump isn’t the way to achieve that. However, .22 auto loaders can be very picky eaters with their ammo. I’ve found one good way to find ammo preferences is to load a few FMJ’s then a hollow point, more FMJ’s, a different hollow point until the mag is full. Keep track. Then do the mag dump, stoppages indicate ammo that may be problematic. I guess I should have expounded more and not given the impression of a wild out of control range bozo. The mag dump does serve a purpose for me, and, yeah, it is fun.
I believe that is the same grip they use for their 5.7. A 1x4 board of a grip I do not like. If I were going for 22 mag I would get a revolver. More reliable. I appreciate the test and agree with your assessment.
I don't know if this is relevant or not, but there were 31 shots fired from a 30 round magazine at the 23 minute mark. Could that aggravate the CCI feeding issue?
I noticed that too. Did that the extra cartridge loaded as easily as it did. It might have exacerbated the problems feeding the first round at the 15 yard standing stage, but it was not a factor in the initial failures from the bench.
I have some experience with the keltec 22 mag pistol. mounted a dot for a friend and the gun wouldn't cycle . ended up removing it . I would go with a PSA 5.7 before the 22 mag .
@@hrfunk ya I know . I guess I am spoiled with having a PSA here in the Charlotte area You can by online and store pickup with no FFL fees.shot the Rock 5.7 ran fine and for way less than the smith
Of the 22mag semiautos, this one is the best. The Keltec is not reliable, and the Walther only has a 15 round capacity, which negates the main advantage of having a 22mag semiauto. This gun might be reliable enough to rely on.
Five or six years ago, I got all excited about the Rock Island .22 Mag 1911. I am so glad there are gun channels on TH-cam to spare my bad decisions. RIA wants you to use Armscor ammo because it is nickel plated, by the way. Apparently that made little-to-no difference to the firearm; jamming was the most consistent result. Every test I watched had the same problem and I decided to use rimfire in rifles and revolvers. Oh well, .22 Mag is nearly the same price as .45ACP anyway.
I like the Kel-tec PMR 30 .22 Mag the 369 price TAG is JUST too high for me for a rim fire if it was 269, I would get one, they have a 16" carbine also if the barrel was 20", I would buy one but not for that price of 635 .
Good afternoon, HRFUNK and family. Yea. Seems like an ok pistol for maybe getting some shooting time in and without the cost of buying 9mm, 45acp, or 10mm ammo. Yes, on the feeding issues. I've seen it on every TH-camr review on it. Maybe try loading the magazine's to full capacity and leaving them fully loaded for a few weeks. Maybe that will settle the springs some. A guess
The more time I spend with rimfire cartridges, the more I think that they're best in revolvers and bolt-action rifles for any serious purposes. For training in how to deal with malfunctions, everyone should have a rimfire semiautomatic pistol.
I also load 25 and it works better than 30. With 30 I get some crush or flattening . A box holds 50 rounds so just load 25 in each mag and you’re good to go.
Seems interesting, but like you said, what do you do with it. 22WMR is more expensive than 9mm. 22WMR in a pistol from a ballistics standpoint is mostly wasted. One can tell by all the un-burnt powder left behind in the gun after firing just a magazine. Still, I imagine it would make a fun range toy for someone who has everything else. For increased reliability, I would slick it up before I ever fired it. Good review.
Well, you can tell by shooting 22 mag across a chronograph from a pistol length barrel. The round is awesome from a rifle, but from a pistol you get velocity equal to what a 22 long rifle will do from a rifle. I love this round in rifles. I wouldn't waste my time getting a pistol in 22 mag. My S &W MP 22 RF is a fine pistol. Maybe my best one even. It eats everything, shoots great & don't blow my ears out.
It's still cheaper to train with this than centerfire, so there's that. If you have 22mag rifle(s) in your inventory, it makes sense to buy a 22 mag pistol....... Interesting that CCI didn't feed as well. I've experienced for decades CCI being more reliable in that they don't misfire. (Hornady and CCI seem to be the best in that regard.) All that being said, Long live the 22 WMR!
I don't really know what the term "stopping power" means. Both the 9mm and the .22 Magnum can inflict lethal wounds. With the correct shot placement, either one can instantly "turn out the lights." With poor shot placement, both can fail to stop a determined aggressor. You'll have to ask the experts to get a more definitive answer.
@@hrfunkThanks for the response! A good cleaning and oil will prob solve the malfunctions. I used the very same ammo and had zero issues. Just a thought.
The only thing that occurs to me is that it might need a good cleaning. Beyond that, I think you’re dealing with the inherent reliability issues associated with cycling this cartridge through a semi-auto mechanism.
HR thanks for doing this range review on this pistol. I was close to buying one but frankly I think I’ll pass. I have a Ruger Super Wrangler in .22mag/ combo .22 LR cylinder and that works very well. Since 22WMR is sort of problematic for defensive use I’ll stick with it for coyote or other varmint elimination purposes.
A gas-operated .22 magnum pistol is an interesting concept. TBH, I'm not sure what niche this pistol was intended to fill. The .22 magnum is a great small game/varmint cartridge, but for that purpose, most people would choose a rifle. I personally wouldn't choose a rimfire cartridge for self-defense because of potential reliability issues, and this pistol is as big as a 9mm, so it doesn't offer any advantage in concealability. "Because I like it" is enough justification to buy a firearm, IMO, but I don't see this pistol as having any practical purpose.
.22 mag is always a fun shooting round. I always bring it out to let friends shoot it. Would i carry .22 mag for defense? No. I also like that the Grendel. 22 mag is great to practice drills. 😂 HR Funk you should do a review of the Grendel (aka. "The Gremlin") LOL SEMPER FI
One purpose I can think of for this pistol is using it as a trainer for the very similar M&P 5.7. You'd have to shoot a lot of 5.7 to make up the purchase price of the second pistol, but 22 Mag is much cheaper than even the cheapest 5.7x28mm.
Sorry a added side note as I am in canada This is for target only and most ranges will at any time only do a max of ten . I always use a five shot group then do my check of target. I also don't know what the laws here would make myself have done to reduce mag. numpers before I could go thru all of the hoops to order one. Thanks again . Tim S. Canada
Thank you for an excellent quality test on this pistol. I have one, and it seems to smooth out with the funky magazine to the feeding, and ejection performance with more rounds. I like the shit out of mine. And shoot the right ammo.
A short stroke gas system in a 22 mag handgun. That much complexity in a 22 of any ilk, seems overkill to me. Might be why the gun is so long...and kinda goofy looking. It just doesn't inspire any "I want it" in me.
Was excited to get one in my hands. When I did I was very disappointed that I was unable to get my finger in the trigger guard with out touching the trigger. WTF S&W? I love the M&P line but won't be buying this one.

It sure is a gas to do a 30 round mag dump. Fun. Expensive but fun.
I'm just not a mag-dump person I guess. Still, if you enjoy it, I hope you always have plenty of ammo.
To be sure, accuracy is paramount and a mag dump isn’t the way to achieve that. However, .22 auto loaders can be very picky eaters with their ammo.

A guess
Someone else will have to determine that. I’ve already returned the one I used for this video.
@@hrfunk Good evening, HRFUNK and family. Just not your glass of Jim Beam and coke. Huh. I understand. Some firearms are just like that.
The more time I spend with rimfire cartridges, the more I think that they're best in revolvers and bolt-action rifles for any serious purposes. For training in how to deal with malfunctions, everyone should have a rimfire semiautomatic pistol.
I think their best home is in revolvers and rifles (bolt or lever) as well.
Thank you for the review
My pleasure!
You should have added some 50gr HP's to your menu.
Work on a Saturday womp womp gunna miss the live. Hope everything and everyone is doing well
Great review thank you so much
I load 25 rounds in the Smith's magazine! I never have mag problems! 25 is plenty!🤣👍
I also load 25 and it works better than 30. With 30 I get some crush or flattening . A box holds 50 rounds so just load 25 in each mag and you’re good to go.
Keltec is the other manufacturer of a 22mag semi auto.
Yep, thanks. I should have remembered that.
Where did you acquire those trousers? I like the pattern on them.
If I remember correctly, I got them from Duluth Trading Company.
@@hrfunk Thanks for the quick response!
(Hornady and CCI seem to be the best in that regard.)
All that being said, Long live the 22 WMR!
I have one of these there is a break in of 250 to 300 rounds after that mine runs flawless
Good. I’ve not heard of an M&P before that required a break in, but I’m glad yours straightened itself out.
I'm looking for the next cheapest round after .22LR... I wonder if this is the answer?
No, it costs more than 9mm
Many Thanks
My pleasure.
Doesn't the 22 Mag have the same stopping power as 9mm?
I don't really know what the term "stopping power" means. Both the 9mm and the .22 Magnum can inflict lethal wounds. With the correct shot placement, either one can instantly "turn out the lights." With poor shot placement, both can fail to stop a determined aggressor. You'll have to ask the experts to get a more definitive answer.
On paper using 22 mag rifle velocity the energy figures may be close. But out of a handgun with the smaller, lighter bullet it's much less effective.
Curious if you cleaned and lubed prior to range test or if you ran it right out of the box
Off the top of my head I don’t remember. I don’t think I did.
@@hrfunkThanks for the response! A good cleaning and oil will prob solve the malfunctions. I used the very same ammo and had zero issues. Just a thought.
40 grain wouldn’t fire at first so I switched to 30 grain. 30 grain shot fine first 500 rounds. Now the 30 grain doesn’t fire. Any suggestions?
The only thing that occurs to me is that it might need a good cleaning. Beyond that, I think you’re dealing with the inherent reliability issues associated with cycling this cartridge through a semi-auto mechanism.
HR thanks for doing this range review on this pistol. I was close to buying one but frankly I think I’ll pass. I have a Ruger Super Wrangler in .22mag/ combo .22 LR cylinder and that works very well. Since 22WMR is sort of problematic for defensive use I’ll stick with it for coyote or other varmint elimination purposes.
I think that's a wise choice.
Great review👍
Thank you!
.22 mag is always a fun shooting round.
I always bring it out to let friends shoot it.
Would i carry .22 mag for defense? No.
I also like that the Grendel. 22 mag is great to practice drills. 😂
HR Funk you should do a review of the Grendel (aka. "The Gremlin") LOL
SEMPER FI
Semper Fi!
Test the WAlther 22 magnum pistol
If I get the opportunity, I will.
FOAD with the Ads!!!
FOAD?
Nice Jeep!
Thank you!
One purpose I can think of for this pistol is using it as a trainer for the very similar M&P 5.7. You'd have to shoot a lot of 5.7 to make up the purchase price of the second pistol, but 22 Mag is much cheaper than even the cheapest 5.7x28mm.
👍👍Thanks HR
Thanks to your video review it has been adopted as the standard service arm of the Elbonian Army.
Think Ian will do a video on it?
That might be a few years from now.
@@tomtruesdale6901 I don't know. It isn't exactly a forgotten weapon, but perhaps it should be.
22 mag costs approx. as much as 9mm.
Around these parts, the .22 Magnum tends to be a little more expensive.
Seams like mine works best with only 25 rounds in the mag
i do my m&p 10mm.
Is it Kaliforniastan approved ? lol
Beats me.probably.
A short stroke gas system in a 22 mag handgun. That much complexity in a 22 of any ilk, seems overkill to me. Might be why the gun is so long...and kinda goofy looking. It just doesn't inspire any "I want it" in me.
I hate the trigger safety. They need to offer this gun without it!
Trigger safety?
In .22 mag, get a revolver
What foreign
i won't be buying that lemon lol
🇺🇸
Was excited to get one in my hands. When I did I was very disappointed that I was unable to get my finger in the trigger guard with out touching the trigger. WTF S&W? I love the M&P line but won't be buying this one.
