    The fact that Ruger hasn’t updated the 10/22 so it can be easily disassembled and cleaned like this blows my mind.

      No competition. M&P15-22 came out and they just threw a collapsible stock on the 10/22. Ruger owns marlin now so I doubt we’ll ever see the model 60 again.

      @@curtislynch8189 Shame because I love my Marlin 60SS with black laminate stock. Been in the market for a 357 magnum lever gun but marlins are unobtainium right now and Henry can't seem to meet the demand now that they added a side gate to their lever guns. Every Marlin and Henry I find is over $900+ which is insane when I could've, and should've picked them up for south of $700.

    I own several 10/22s as does my Wife and Daughter. One of the other rifles that I own is a clone of the 10/22 Ruger. It was built with s stainless steel receiver and barrel all nicely placed in a factory composite stock. I put a Green Mountain heavy fluted barrel and a Houge over molded stock and a quality scope. It loves Wolf Match ammo and will make ragged holes all day when I do my job.
    I bought my 8 year old Daughter her first 10/22 for her Birthday recently. We take her to the range and have taught her gun safety and handling. We continue her education both at home and the range. We make her tell us what to do! She of course won’t have possession of it until she is legally allowed to according to the laws of our State, but she already knows its hers and she maintains and feeds it. She will shoot until the ammo runs out if allowed.
    Because of her early access to firearms and training, firearms are not a mystery or a temptation for her. Truly tragic that other parents don’t train their children in the same way. The tragic incidents of firearms related “accidents” would plummet.

    Great video on this different version of classic 10/22. Actually having several generations of 10/22's from 1.980's , I can notice older versions had much better quality finish, black walnut stocks, better internal parts. Bolts were actually (seemingly) machined from steel billets, receivers made from (apparently) better alloys, as well as trigger groups. Later models, I've noticed bolts are cast units, not.so.well machined, more (cheap) MIM parts, beech stocks and plastic trigger group housings. Several years ago, I was able to purchase couple stainless receivers which I fitted mostly with custom made parts, assembled / fitted for (informal) competitive shooting. One bears a Volquartsen fluted bbl, the other a less expensive Green Mountain heavier / also fluted bbl. Both include hand fitted Power Custom trigger groups. Green Mountain vs Volquartsen, accuracy is basically the same. Both bolts are billet- machined + Volquartsen extractors.
    NO ftf, fte. Very reliable & accurate.

      @@bafumat have you ever taken apart a model 60? They're near impossible to put back together, also if you accidentally trip and fall on it you're going to damage the receiver where the pin goes in and permanently destroy the rifle. The 10/22 is a vastly superior design. I like the model 60, but I don't like the facts I mentioned about it.
      Edit: I will add that the 10/22 definitely isn't the best semi auto ever, but I do agree that it's the best semi auto 22lr rifle ever designed.

    Our Remington Nylon 66 went 40 years before it was cleaned, and I only did it because I wanted to get the rust off of it, re-blue, and give it some love for once...
    It had been treated like a stolen gun for 4 decades.
    I don't even want to know how many tens of thousands of rounds went through it without any issues.
    But the 10/22 is the best rifle ever made?
    Even if your basis for giving a gun that label was the modularity and the configurability, surely the AR-15 would take that title...
    The 10/22 is probably the most configurable and prolific 22 caliber rifle ever made, and it's definitely in the top 5, if not top 3 best 22 rifles ever made.
    But I've seen them malfunction when they don't even look that bad.
    I know it's only a sample set of one, but I've never seen another 22 rifle that you can get from behind the door of a bathroom, looking like the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and have 100% reliability every single time...
    I don't understand it because the barrel never even got cleaned in that time either, and yet its always been accurate.

    The fact that the Ruger 10/22's basic teardown and maintenance can throw off your zero is absolutely insane. Why hasn't Ruger changed that design? I'd think a nice detented locking lug would be a great solution (don't know a better way to describe what I'm visualizing but it works in my head) instead of needing a calibrated torque wrench on hand.

    • @johndaniels1197
      @johndaniels1197 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The whole concept of a stock/chassis and receiver that need to be screwed together is an extremely old-fashioned idea, and it's slowly going away. Look at the AR15 and everything else vaguely like it, the Q Fix, and the Sig Cross, for examples of what guns will look like in the future. Unified receivers are the future. It's not that the 10/22 needs to be updated, but that its core architecture is rooted in hopelessly antiquated design concepts, and the entire thing is long overdue for replacement on the market.

    • @dwatts64
      @dwatts64 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johndaniels1197 but I can see a way in my head right now that you could make it work without needing that screw. It might not work with chassis that predate it, but those older chassis could be easily altered with a special washer to take the updated design. We don't need to throw the whole baby out with the bathwater, it seems there could be a simple fix for this if Ruger would just do it.

    • @dwatts64
      @dwatts64 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johndaniels1197 or even better, simpler fix would be to do what older military rifles did and make the bolt part of the sling mount system. Then there's a definite correct amount to screw it in, when the eyelet is perpendicular to the chassis and feels snug, you stop. That's an even easier fix that doesn't change the design but makes it so you at least are consistent and screw it in the same amount every time.

    • @johndaniels1197
      @johndaniels1197 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fiddling with the take down screw is a good thing to check if you are looking to tune your rifle to a certain load. But yes, it's also a pain. I made up a card for my rifles, and I use a torque screw driver each time. But even though I usually shoot with a can, I don't disassemble them much. I'm more likely to just squirt some Gun Scrubber into the action occasionally. And I run a bore snake through them every now and then. You don't really need to run a cleaning rod through most 22 rimfire rifles.
