Just FYI, fewer coils means more power. The more coils, the more spring 'area' (for lack of knowledge of the technical term) there is to concentrate the energy in, and it becomes more dispersed. Fewer coils means more concentrated energy, and more 'explosive' response. Hopefully that makes sense, and is useful to you.
That model Schrade is _not_ already milled to receive a coil spring if you're trying to convert it into an automatic. The part of the frame that needs to be removed can be seen in the video between 2:55 and 3:00 minutes. A rotary tool and a grinding bit can be used to remove the excess aluminum quickly and then the spring can be added without having to cut it down and bend it, etcetcetc. Once done properly the knife works very well and has a hard, solid kick when deployed.
I wouldn't know first-hand, Michael, but switchbladekits.com sells the parts you'd need to convert one to automatic. Here's a link: www.switchbladekits.com/index.php?l=product_list&m=12
Great video! Just last night I found a small purple (under 2" blade) auto in my closest, and the action was terrible, so I did some maintenance and now smooth like butter!
Hi, Writing to you from french riviera. Thanks for this video, you just gave me an innovant idea for an automatic system. I gonna watch your others videos.
The coil springs are actually easy to make. You make them on a lathe using piano wire and a spring arbor. Run the lathe just like you're making threads as it wraps around the spring arbor.
You are correct. You can always buy some springs for fairly cheap because that is the easy way. But some people ( like myself ) enjoy doing things myself. Btw, piano wire is not expensive. You can use a cordless drill instead of a lathe. A spring arbor is simply a piece of round stock with a hole drilled.
+drunkinmaster1 Well, since you can't make cordless drills by yourself (and enjoy doing so), we're back to just buying a couple of cheap springs online...
Cheers for this video Cutty. Switch blades are illegal here in the U.K.. its where I purchased my favourite knife so going to have a go at converting that x
Hey, I'm an electrician from Massachusetts and I found your video very interesting. I was curious if this same method could be used on a utilty knife (milwaukee fastback). If so would this be something you could create and ship to me?
I know I’m a year late to reply to you but i was wondering the same thing so i opened up a milwaukee fastback and figured out it is possible to do the conversion. I am planning on doing so soon
YES 2 finger it HAHAHA, at 8:52 and 8:56 i can definitely hear it scraping. You said you could feel the drag I can hear it lol it is very audible to hear it.
FYI - the next time you come upon the problem with the spring being too big, you might want to try heating up the coil spring first, before you bend/cut it. That will avoid breakage.
Have you ever tried a kershaw dimension? I am going to go all out and see if it's possible, I'm guessing not because they already have a torsion bar, so I don't know if it will have the space milled out for the spring?????
I can say that knife is the first one I like from schrade. Loving the tanto. Also jeff missed out. When taking an auto knife apart. It has to be already opend before u un screw the knife. Or it will spring out the blade a parts out
Hey im sorry if this is a stupid qustion but i had a prety nice looking automatic knife o got ofline once but in like 1-2 days it stoped working i had someone take it apart and the coil spring was messed up like streched out maybe kinda bent even my qustion is can you fix a coil spring after something like this has happened any answers gladly apreceated thank you vary much
jeff did you make a vid how to make the spring i have the excact same model schrade and another in desert camo both were sold without springs would love to make them auto
is that a coil spring or a torsion spring? I think its a torsion spring. they are used for torque operations . torque is twist. coil springs are for pushing (open coil) or pulling (closed coil).
Awsome tutorial i loved it so much i bought a new knife and some springs. However, the knife i have has (i think) torx screws and i lack the tools necessary. Any suggestions to open this knife up?
Hey im just wondering if you thank by chance that this can also be done with say the Milwaukie fast back 3 i believe it was that i had it had a button on it but it was just the lock but would have been over ahundred times cooler if someone could have turned it into a switchblade for me you no what i mean
Hey, is there a way to swap blade from one knife to another? I have a knife that I love everything but the blade, and one that I broke and want to swap blades?
+GNARXiSiST If they are the exact knife, it is possible to swap the blade but if they are different models, the blades aren't going to fit on the other handles.
I'm curious if you would try a conversion with the Buck Redpoint. It's already nice with its quick one handed action. It would be amazing converted to auto. I would sincerely appreciate it if you would give it a shot as a tutorial for me.
you wouldn't believe the money i have made doing this. i had a cheap china gas station knife that was spring assisted and i used the spring to turn a ka-bar wart hog into a spring assist. i had to find out how though so back in 2016 i looked on here found this video and its all gravy from there
He has multiple jobs, been collecting knives all his life. He made a video about bringing knives to school and if I remember correctly he had multiple knives by 3rd or 4th grade.
Kolby9241 One-handed opening knives have been designated as legal to import by Canada Border Services as long as they don't fall into one of the prohibited categories. Torsion bar knives and spring assisted knives are okay.[citation needed] There is no length restriction on carrying knives within the Criminal Code of Canada; the only restriction is for concealed carry. Concealed carry includes backpacks and other off-body containers as well as under clothing. Folding knives under a certain length may not be considered concealed carries P.S comes from wikipedia Canada's criminal code Law 84
Haha I actually thought I was looking at a video for an OTF knife. I came back to this video and re watched and saw it was just assisted opening! Yeah as you said they're fine although I've known some cops to be testy about them.a
I have been trying to buy a good knife I dont have mony and the one I have cut me because it some times locks and the blade never opens. I was wandring if you could send me a knife. Also I want to start doing videos.
+Joseph Woble LOL! You _must_ be joking, right? That Schrade is about 25 bucks and the spring is $1. You want him to send you a "good knife" (how about a Marfione Custom Sigil SS T/D?) for *free* so you can "make videos", yet you can afford a computer, internet access, a video camera, tools, medication, etc., etc. ...nice try, chump.
I like Scrade knifes. I can USE THEM and not have to worry about busting up an expensive knife. That's a cool mod. I am going to try it :) I have American Science and Surplus right down the road from me...I am going to go see if they have springs big enough to fit my knives. :)
I'm confused. It looks to me like you converted an auto knife into... an auto knife. The Schrade you put the spring into already had the channel in the handle, hole in the blade, and button. It WAS an auto knife. If you put a spring into a regular folder then you're converting something. Still a good video to be able to see how the internals on an auto knife look.
No he put the coil from a spring assisted knife in a auto knife. Pointless honestly considering the shade already comes with a coil. THE COIL THAT WAS MADE FOR IT. Just saying
+83RBurke The springs from clothespins and chip-clips won't work for this kind of knife as they are too small. They actually work for the FB humpback coils and the older KC humpbacks (although, you have to go through a lot of chip-clips to find the right size one). You can get a coil like the one in the video from a number of different supply sites. I think Jantz has them. If not, send them a message and ask them where to get one.
The knife is still NOT legal in NYC because it can be "wrist flicked" open, as you showed, and police and courts have classified this as a gravity knife.
Just FYI, fewer coils means more power. The more coils, the more spring 'area' (for lack of knowledge of the technical term) there is to concentrate the energy in, and it becomes more dispersed. Fewer coils means more concentrated energy, and more 'explosive' response.

do you know if this can be down with the gerber propel down range?
I wouldn't know first-hand, Michael, but switchbladekits.com sells the parts you'd need to convert one to automatic. Here's a link: www.switchbladekits.com/index.php?l=product_list&m=12
+Pete Aron 150? is that for the knife and the kit?
Yea, that's spendy, I agree. It shows that it's possible, though. Google other stores, you may be able to find the parts for less.
Great video! Just last night I found a small purple (under 2" blade) auto in my closest, and the action was terrible, so I did some maintenance and now smooth like butter!
You forgot to have "Take care" in your closing. How am I supposed to know what to do now!? :-O
Hi,
Writing to you from french riviera. Thanks for this video, you just gave me an innovant idea for an automatic system.
I gonna watch your others videos.
Awesome Video Jeff. Keep up the great work. Nick.
Do you have a list of knives that are like the one you converted?
Great video Jeff. Very informative.
Very nice conversion Jeff!
what size spring did you use on this as i have the same knife and would like to do this
The coil springs are actually easy to make.
You make them on a lathe using piano wire and a spring arbor.

I just saw you and Guss on the science channel, the show was outrageous acts of science. Lol
Cheers for this video Cutty.
Switch blades are illegal here in the U.K.. its where
I purchased my favourite knife so going to have a go at converting that x
Just Gus did you try it ?
hahah, you can hear gus snoring in the background!
RIP Gus
can you use a pen spring?
Nice video!

[Blade flies out] Nothin' here for you, maggot! LOL
Heating up a spring will destroy it.
nice, how is the centering after this?
off to the side, haha spring size was wrong, but wiht the right spring and a few extra teflon washers you can dial it in right
thanks for the reply :)
accidentally clicked this and now im on a watchlist
No you aren’t
Have you ever tried a kershaw dimension? I am going to go all out and see if it's possible, I'm guessing not because they already have a torsion bar, so I don't know if it will have the space milled out for the spring?????
Cool video mate.
I assume this won’t work with a regular folding knife without a button lock?
I have that Schrade and mine was converted by blade hq for me. I love it it's a really good knife
Right!! Blade hq!
I can say that knife is the first one I like from schrade. Loving the tanto. Also jeff missed out. When taking an auto knife apart. It has to be already opend before u un screw the knife. Or it will spring out the blade a parts out
Where did you buy the cheap auto? I don’t want to mess up a nice blade
Where can a get a ouch button knife like the one you have? I think you mentioned is from China or something. I have been looking for one. Thanks
Secret Agent they sell otf (out the front ) knifes on the app “WISH “. Thank me later. I have a collection now thanks to them. 💪🏻👍

Hey im sorry if this is a stupid qustion but i had a prety nice looking automatic knife o got ofline once but in like 1-2 days it stoped working i had someone take it apart and the coil spring was messed up like streched out maybe kinda bent even my qustion is can you fix a coil spring after something like this has happened any answers gladly apreceated thank you vary much
How'd you get the button on there?????????
Does knife have to have a lock release for this to work?
Hi Cutlery Lover - Schrade auto spring replacement video, I have a Schrade SC70. were does the o ring go?Thanks
Nice video
Have you looked at the Milwaukee Fastback knives? Could a spring be added to the changeable blade models?
Has to have unlock button to open/ close.
Very well done!
How does the locking system work? is it the same lock for open and for closed?
is it "plug and play" or do you need to drill the blade and the handle for the spring to work
No.no. no fits right in with right size spring
Coil spring looks like the sort that are in Mitchell fishing reels that flip the bail arm back on. Found plenty on ebay. Could you use these instead?
where did you get the knife
jeff did you make a vid how to make the spring i have the excact same model schrade and another in desert camo both were sold without springs would love to make them auto
is that a coil spring or a torsion spring? I think its a torsion spring. they are used for torque operations . torque is twist. coil springs are for pushing (open coil) or pulling (closed coil).
what is the name of that small tool at the top of the screen. really interested in that.
Would j be able to buy just the cheap spring knife at say bass pro or cabelas?
Get a come knockup
Dude the music is aweful. Cool video I took apart a smith and wessen auto before and I totally know what you mean when you say it's a pain in the ass.
Awsome tutorial i loved it so much i bought a new knife and some springs. However, the knife i have has (i think) torx screws and i lack the tools necessary. Any suggestions to open this knife up?
Damien Zimbrick just buy a torx set, its cheap and easy to find everywhere
Hey im just wondering if you thank by chance that this can also be done with say the Milwaukie fast back 3 i believe it was that i had it had a button on it but it was just the lock but would have been over ahundred times cooler if someone could have turned it into a switchblade for me you no what i mean

Hey cutlery lover, I was wondering if u can do the opposite and make a push button auto into a manual.?
+TheFiendRacer the cheap chinese one he cannibalised for the spring, if you put it back again, without the spring, is now a manual knife...
+TheFiendRacer the cheap chinese one he cannibalised for the spring, if you put it back again, without the spring, is now a manual knife...

What knife is that in specific?
What is the name of that knife ?
Hey, is there a way to swap blade from one knife to another? I have a knife that I love everything but the blade, and one that I broke and want to swap blades?

If they are the exact knife, it is possible to swap the blade but if they are different models, the blades aren't going to fit on the other handles.
I have a knife with a liner lock that gives way and folds up easily can you help me with how to fix it
where did you get the cheap chinese auto from ???
I'm curious if you would try a conversion with the Buck Redpoint. It's already nice with its quick one handed action. It would be amazing converted to auto. I would sincerely appreciate it if you would give it a shot as a tutorial for me.

Great job!
Can I buy it

He has multiple jobs, been collecting knives all his life. He made a video about bringing knives to school and if I remember correctly he had multiple knives by 3rd or 4th grade.

The knife I want to convert is not a push button. Does anyone know of a video that shows how to install a spring without the push button?
Legal reasons. What legal reasons. It's a fucking pocket knife. Not a gun.
too bad I can't legally do this, I really need to move to a different area
I have been trying to buy a good knife I dont have mony and the one I have cut me because it some times locks and the blade never opens. I was wandring if you could send me a knife. Also I want to start doing videos.

Can you pls make a video about " how to make a automatic knife into an manual knife"
Great video, what model schrade are you using for the knife?
What kind of Schrader is that?
Schrade**
It looks like a Schrade SC60b
I like Scrade knifes. I can USE THEM and not have to worry about busting up an expensive knife. That's a cool mod. I am going to try it :) I have American Science and Surplus right down the road from me...I am going to go see if they have springs big enough to fit my knives. :)
perfect :) yeah the right size coil spring is important, they are cheap to buy so maybe a few sizes to try out is a good idea to find the perfect fit
Idk but there might be plastick peace sticking there already where the spring should sit
I'm confused.

if that wasn't an auto why did have a button and not have a thumb stud, or flipper?
good looking''
l got my switchblade today. Not gunna lie, it's for protection. lt has only one sharped side. ls it suitable for stabbing?
Zane Anderson l'm not American. We have gun control.
Zane Anderson l can try stabbing dogs and animals.
:]
If it has a point, it'll get stabby. What's a shank other than a piece of steel with a point?
ThatGuyOnCoke l love your name hahahahahhahahaha
Suitable for stabbing. It will also cut if you need to.
Bhai mujhe cccp 47 knife ka spring chahiya
The knife is still NOT legal in NYC because it can be "wrist flicked" open, as you showed, and police and courts have classified this as a gravity knife.
My state switch blades are legal
In mine they aren't but I'm still gonna make my propel downrange into one.
They used to still have them on ebay.
That is awesome. I got an auto for $4 from a friend and I kinda want to try this on a better knife because that one is nothing amazing
I'm looking this up after looking at a school shooting PSA.
