It's amazing how many survivors that are not only still alive, but able to make the long journey back to Iwo Jima. Our nation owes so much to them and their WWII peers.

I am a Marine. Iwo Jima/Iwo-To - the history is well known, the carnage we know from documentary film. Those Marines know the complete story, and its nightmarish legacy in their minds. The sad part for me is that we now come together in peace with those aged veterans from both sides. It still floors me that so much blood is spilled between the initial hostilities and that peace. We are better human beings than that, aren't we? There has to be a better way. I'm just saying...
SEMPER FIDELIS to our fellow Marine Corps! As an American who had a member of my family who fought and was wounded at Iwo Jima, I can say this with great respect to the Marines... *they fought blood, tooth and nail to capture the island. I wish I could have been there with 'em... Semper Fi!*

@@doubleseven1463 Well unfortunately I (Ted) am not paid to "prepare". I have to go to work and actually work for a living. No taxpayer funded life for me. And if the worst case scenario comes as you say, I think Americans can somehow protect themselves.
Out Tax preparer of many years was a great gentleman who spoke with great reserve. After WW2 he was educated at Harvard, becoming a Naval Engineer. Only once did he ever speak of his being a Marine Rifleman who went ashore while every conceivable ship in the Navy fired over their heads into the beaches and the Island of Iwo Jima. He was certain nothing could have withstood the incessant bombardment, “Was I ever wrong”. He said this on the occasion of our country’s contemplating the second invasion of Iraq. He did not offer solace to us as parents of a young Marine, but counseled “Bush had better think this through…”. Seems he had little confidence in a quick military solution. It gave us pause. He was a humble and wise man. He didn’t think he would survive his landing on Iwo Jima.
We Australians have an Ode to the fallen that I believe is suitable for this commemoration. "They shall grow not old, as we who are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning; We will remember them. Lest we Forget." Semper Fidelis Marines.
