  • Thomas H. Begay, Navajo Code Talker of WW2, tells his story from his roots in the heart of Navajo territory to the front lines of America’s bloodiest battles, from his home in Albuquerque, NM, Nov 2, 2023.
Begay served at the Battle of Iwo Jima as well as the Chosin Reservoir, and went on to serve in the Bureau of Indian Affairs as an employment assistance officer, aiding hundreds of Navajos in finding skills and jobs.

Semper Fi Devil Dog! and AIRBORNE! Thank you for all the awesomeness that you did and still do today. I was a Field Radio operator from 89-93. You can talk about us, but you can't talk, without us. Out, here.

What a great episode! I'm not Navajo as far as I know but, I was a Marine field radio operator in the mid to late 80's. Those code talkers did a service to the Country that deserves to be told! This episode spoke to me on a deep down level. Joining the Marines was the best thing I ever did with my life at that young age. It gave me what I needed to live a productive life and move forward compared to others I knew that wasted their chance at life from my past. Thank you very much for showing this episode!

@@kennethmckinney2088 Not mad, thankful! Such a man is what I was, I just didn't know native language during my time. What he did is beyond description, he is what Marines should stive to be, a true hero! Above and beyond described that man, I'm proud to call him a brother! He did way more than me, I wish there were more people like him that would do what needs to be done when the call comes!

Not gonna lie, my family has been Marine for a long time. I’m currently USN active duty, I had a chance where I was younger to enlist with the marines. My wife has heard enough of me with stories and anecdotes of how Marines are. If I had the chance to go back, I would’ve been in the ranks of the proud and few. The value of one’s service is not lost on the Corps, whether it takes a few years on Admin’s part. My family has been in the USMC for a few generations now, I would give my right arm if I could be a part of that family, a brotherhood like no other, if I could show my children, after 13 years of trying, that the title is worth it. I’m active duty USN aviation, and love every Marine that I assist as a comrade. The closest I can get is Army for blue-to-green currently. I had to dig for my family at Chosin, in country during Vietnam. I’ve fought hard for both family and country and wish I had the chance to vindicate myself with earning that title. I enlisted during Covid to support my family, and made sure we were secure, made sure I did my duty under the circumstances then and now. My wife’s family is USMC as well. I have no rivalry with any other branch, but to have earned the title would’ve been my highest achievement against the odds I have had, and to tell my children to not stop no matter the situation. I hope that my service embodies that spirit, as the Army is the closest I can achieve those goals as it stands. It won’t earn me the coveted title, but I hope to instill in my kids a pride that they’ll carry on in life to achieve greatness in their time. These Marines earned not only the title, but the respect and admiration of generations with what they had to endure in the worst of conditions. They embody the values of improvise, adapt, and overcome.
    -PO3, USN.
