A friend of mine joined the Marine Corps at the end of my sophomore year in HS. When ha came back from Parris Island, he was so different. Before he had long hair, slouched a bit, we played video games and never really had serious chat, just a couple of very relaxed friends. When he came back, he was sharp. He stood tall, looking like he grew 6 inches, his hair was cut to nothing, he walked, talked and acted like he meant business wherever he went. The best part was he was also still the chill, down to Earth video game playing friend I first met. Chris is my friend and he is a Marine.

I never knew my dad or my mom. I spent 18 years in 19 different foster homes. I went to 13 different schools before 12th grade and barely graduated high school because I couldn’t focus on anything but how wrecked my life was. As a kid, I never spent long enough in one place to have any close relationships with anyone. When I was 16, I learned that my mom and dad gave me up at birth because they didn’t want to be burdened with raising a child. At the same time, my biological mother told me that I was “just a mistake.” I had no
real reason to be on earth and I had accepted that I would never really be anything in life because my first 17 years
    was one failure after another.
2 weeks before turning 18, I saw a Marine walking into a barbershop at a shopping center near my boys home.
To this day, I will never forget how sharp and disciplined he appeared to me. I never talked to him and I never knew his name. What I most remember about him, is how confident he was without saying a word.
In 1999, I stood on those yellow footprints at Paris Island and from that day; I gave the USMC everything that life hadn’t given me before that day. 24 years later, I am still a Marine and as long as they’ll have me; I’ll stay a Marine.
Marines are my family. Unlike my parents, the USMC raised me and made me the man that I am today. They did in 13 weeks what my parents refused to do. The Eagle, Globe, and Anchor that I earned proved to me that I was not a mistake.
Looking back on it all, if I hadn’t lived the life I lived; I’m not sure if I would have ever gone to Paris Island. As horrible as my childhood was, I’m glad it was the way it was. I’d do it all again if I knew where it would eventually lead me.

As a obese 26 year old male who was dropped 200lbs and still has 40lbs to go... I so want this... Soon.
Edit: on the day of February 18th, 2024, 7 years later it is with great shame I did not achieve my goal. I battled with depression and suicidal thoughts since making this post. I've also gained a lot of weight since then but I am in the process of re-losing that. On the bright side I got my shit almost together and I have gotten a college degree within this time frame. Working on my bachelors now. I do not qualify for the Marine Corps anymore due to my age being beyond the limit. Life has had its ups and downs these last 7 years but I am still alive and striving for a better day than yesterday. Not the kind of update yall probably had in mind but it's an update either way .

I'm sad, ever since I was a kid I wanted to join The Marines, but I can't. The reason why is because I'm blind in my right eye, I hate it. I can do things just as well as everybody else, I can shoot well (I'm one of the best shots in my family). I can drive, I played sports just like all the other guys.. I'm normal except for the fact that I am blind in one eye. All you people who are considering joining The Marines, do it. There are guys like me who can only dream.

it's been 42 years since i left parris island. i only hope they haven't changed it. it was the toughest thing i had ever experienced. i had played football and baseball in school and thought i was in shape. they tore us down mentally and physically. we thought we were going to die. the training was 18 to 24 hrs a day. no weekends off. 1 phone call home in the 12 weeks we were there. were we abused? hell yes, and thank God for it. i was trained to survive in combat. the training i received kept me alive and got me home. As tough as this looks on the screen, I'm sure it's at least 10 times worse in reality. I know one of my brothers would always tell my mother how the training sucked to do while my other brother embraced and possibly enjoyed the suck factor it has on people. Knowing what my brothers had to go through, what one continues to do, and hearing horror stories from my siblings, father, and close friends, I would still do anything in my power to earn the prestigious rank of Marine.

My family is a military family. Marines, Army and Airforce. My family have fought in every military action and war this nation had participated in since the Revolutionary War. Many didn't make it home. All gave their best. I am the first generation born in the south, and I found one amongst the dead at Andersonville. I have worn my brother's MC ring since he graduated. My son in law did 2 deployments. Helmand Province and 11 months off the shore of Libya. I am very proud of him. He treats my daughter, who has proved herself worthy of a soldier and given him 3 beautiful children. It was never easy, he even missed the birth of their first child. But they never buckled like his family predicted. I even had a brother doing soldier sculpting at Paris Island. Man, did he have some funny stories! I've tried always to instill in them that there is honor in being a soldier. It is an honorable profession. But they have to provide the dignity. BYOD, so to speak. Bravery is a byproduct of knowledge, confidence and honor. It will be there when you need it.
We are under attack. Make no mistake, Antifa is a terrorist organization. They have taken over territory armed. They have declared themselves not of our nation and they kill indiscriminately. They are breeding fear and distrust and and hatred among our people. They disrespect our flag, our glorious dead, our brave veterans and our beliefs. My question is...why are they still here? This is a job for my military, so what's the hold-up? They have damaged this nation irreparably with malice and forethought. People say our military will not fire on it's own, but they are not it's own by their own admission. They are baiting the citizens of this nation and soon the people will rise up on their own. They are not equipped for such an endeavor.
We need the help of the those who are trained for such situations. What do we have to do to get relief from this?

When I grow up I’m going to join the U.S Marine corp. my dream started at an early age when I was about 3 years old when my dad took me to a Military museum where I saw Marine flipping rifles, their uniform and outfit was very fancy and very pretty. I was impressed with the military technology, that was in 2009 when I visited the museum. One time when I was in Mesquite Texas I saw 4 solder one soldier was manning a 50cal machine gun and the other 2 are passengers and 1 is driving an old 1940 Jeep. now I am 14 years old I am 4 years away from joining the Marine. I have been studying a lot about Military career and jobs. I want to be a combat Marine when I graduate the Marine basic training. The reason why I wanted to be a marine is helping my family because we are struggling to make money and when I get into college they will pay my college fee for me so in my future I get more opportunities. I’m not just doing it for my college I’m doing this for my family and my country.

You’re a smart and good kid for realizing you can change your life at 14 through the marine corps. Good for you! If I would have had that mindset I would be so much better off now at 24. My husband in in boot right now for the same reasons you listed, only he learned about all of this at 23! You can do this! You will change your family tree.

Definitely a lot of pride in those faces once they earned their badge :)
I remember feeling the same way when I marched out of Kapooka (Australian Army) a culmination of all the trials and challenges faced and the pride of making it through is a feeling many will never experience at that level. Well done to the recruits :)
@16:06 when the band was playing "Waltzing Matilda" was absolutely on point.
Waltzing Matilda is an Australian Song and is the march for the 1st Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR) so it immediately brought back memories from my service over the pond here in Australia and shows the strong ties and friendships Aussie Soldiers have with the United States Marines :) Semper Fi Mates :)

Wow! Went through PI in 73 3rd Battalion. Watching this took me right back esp forming ie yellow foot prints and what we called walking through “The Doors To Hell” The end of the Crucible and our Eagle,Globe and Anchor really got the tears flowing for sure, it was called “E Beach” during my time. Great memories and glad I went back down it and knowing our Corps has not changed and earned the hard way.

As a marine , and have been in for a while now , not really ever looking up marine videos on TH-cam sense I joined years ago , this popped up on my feed , I clicked it and when it went though each phase , I had memories I remembered clear as day and could see as if it was yesterday I woke up in my rack to go out and do what had to be done for the day ,and this brought back some motivation I felt I had lost , stay motivated Marines , semper Fi

It was never really the plan to become a Marine like my dad, but after learning more and more, I feel like I have a sense of duty, to serve my country. Maybe not as a lifetime career, but at least a while! I'm currently living in Australia, and plan on joining the ADF gap year program to give the military life a shot, and if I feel like I can do it, I'll see that I talk to a recruiter when I go back to the states.
Also are they playing waltzing matilda at the end? XD

The marines do a good job of keeping their aura of prestige....wearing the uniform and serving the country is a great feeling regardless, some dudes are negative and say things are stupid and cheesy, it’s not. It really is a special honor to serve ones country.
