When I was a little kid, whenever I saw the picture at 7:35 of the Godzilla suit with a walking cane, I always imagined the suit coming to life and talking like an old man. "Back in my day, sonny, we didn't have no fancy CGI!" I guess I just had an active imagination.
I'm glad Tsuburaya and his team invented suitmation. The movements are fluent and with the right camera work it looks very realistic. I think Suitmation combined with a bit CGI makes the best combination for great special effects movies.
I always liked the older Godzilla, I remember watching the movies as a child on Creature Double Feature. The War of the Gargantuas is still my favorite but will always watch a Godzilla movie whenever I can, Thanks for sharing!
I did read that the guy who wore the 1st working suit lost a lotta weight & suffered fainting spells, his sacrifice was not in vein! As the big G is STILL the most awesome creature ever!!!
@@titan133760 I think that was the mothra vs godzilla suit which was recovered. Unfortunately because of the material, that suit has completely rotted away at this point.
The narrator forgot to mention the Beast from 20,000 fathoms because it was one of the inspirations of Godzilla. Toho also saw the beast from 20,000 fathoms.
This is a great documentary. I have it on Gojira/Godzilla dvd. It's funny in the later Godzilla movies (1984 and later) the suit looks very dry and rubbery at times. The head also looks more robotic and moves very mechanically. I prefer the old Godzilla suit designs because he actually looks more organic and alive. The 1962 suit King Kong vs. Godzilla is my favorite.
This is an awesome video, detailing how the suit was made, how it operated during filming and what was planned before it was made. The Godzilla suit that started it all.
Happy 60th Birthday, Godzilla! 幸せな60歳の誕生日!--Very much enjoyed seeing this video & learning more about one of the most interesting & successful films in franchise history! Godzilla Rules! ゴジラのルール!
@zillamaster2000 I also remember the scene in Terror of Mechagodzilla where Godzilla's back is on fire, the stuntman wasn't acting, the suit had been set on fire by accident and he was screaming for help
I like this movie & it was the first Godzilla movie I ever watched & I liked it. The part where the kid is on the banana boat was always freaky when I was younger.
Godzilla "King of The Monsters" and Overseer of the Human Race! You can never fear Godzilla. His underlying theme, "to keep humans safe." His senses was the ability to know when an alien monster was trying to overthrow the world. Mankind always thought Godzilla was out to get him, this was not true. Godzilla: overseer of children and forgiving of adults, who tried to take him out. Godzilla:Gagamera: Mankind's Best Friends! If Godzilla was around, no more wars, period! Take care, SingMia
So the main animals this character spawned from were a Tyrannosaur, Iguanadon, Stegosaurus, and an alligator. He was charcoal grey? No wonder almost all the toys show him as grey.
That's right, there was nobody named Gojira. But according to some sources (which I read years ago and can't recall the names) there was a stagehand who was quite large and fearsome looking whose nickname was Gojira, meaning Gorilla Whale. Gojira is actually pronounced "Go-dzee-lah," later render "Godzilla" in English.
I know. However, the point was correcting the idea that Gojira "translates" into English, when it doesn't: it transliterates. The choices in "l" over "r" are, well, yes, arbitrary. But the point I was making (see comment I was responding to) was in reference to the idea that it "translated," which it most certainly does not, hence the asterisks to imply emphasis. It's a (rough, pseudo-inaccurate) transliteration, as it is still about converting to the phonetics of English, not semantic content.
Actually, this is debatable. The true origin of the word is not known. Honda's wife said in an interview that he (Ishiro) liked making up these kinds of folk tales, or something like them (I'm paraphrasing). Also, there are no known workers who had that nickname.
This is not true either. As Mrs. Kimi Honda points out, the nickname anecdote is most probably just another "tall story" from the boys at Toho. The name was coined after much discussions between Mr. Tanaka, Mr. Tsuburaya and Mr. Honda.
ie, a "translation" of Gojira would be if all us English speakers called him "OI' Whale Ape." Well. Not "Ol'" but, hey, that certainly would have a sort of rustic charm, wouldn't it? (So it's far closer to bad transliteration than bad translation)
That story isn't true, there wasn't anyone nicknamed Gorjira at Toho. It's an urban legend and Gojira actually translates into Godzira in English, but they went with Godzilla.

@@joeyvader Imagine just seeing a bunch of dead mothras, And then everyone just sighing and going on their merry way
This should exist as a comic

Have you seen the new 2014 Godzilla film?
A work of ART!
Old-Man Parker yep a masterpiece.

I'd love to see a follow up on Godzilla 1984. The story behind the design of that particular Godzilla is almost as fascinating as that of the first.
Yesssss yes yesss
Wasn't it stolen sometime after production where it's still missing to this very day?

Don't worry. He mentioned it in another featurette called "Godzilla Story Development".

That one is a fan favorite. He looks easily identifiable as Godzilla but has a more reptilian look than any of the others.

Still the definitive video of it's kind. Thanks for sharing.
I can’t believe there are no “man in the suit” comments as of now
To be fair the last comment was 3 months ago
The documentary I repeatedly watched in 2006. I love it.

Just saw GODZILLA on TMC last night for the first time in 40 years. Neat post.
I WANT THAT SUIT SO BAD...
It would have rotten away by now considering the nature of rubber suits
Shame these suits don't last forever.
The original MechaGodzilla suit is still around, one of the only surviving Showa Suits.
Ever since I was a little one GODZILLA HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE MONSTER.

If someone would want to make another Godzilla movie, like those, I like to do 2 Heisei series versions.
Love it.. Great job.. Please do Gamra now 😁
Excellent, the quality and detail is amazing. Do they make a documentary film of this?

Excellent video, sounds like that suit was a total death trap!
Just wondering if Toho did keep original Godzilla clay models
Thanks for this video is was so helpful for me also how does the wire keep the suit closed
I've heard from other sources that the suit was brown. Do we have any accounts from the crew?
Your right he was a big tough guy so that's when they come up the name and how Godzilla is very invincible when it comes to military weapons

When did Godzilla suits start incorporating ventilation systems?
+LaStriata never they just made the suits more slick and put them into a colder room
Starting with the MogeGoji design

godzilla means whale ape so if whale is kujira than go must be a part of ape, or am i wrong? idk cuz im not japanese
