    Watching this it's so obvious Peter wanted to play guitar more than anything. And as another poster already noted, the right guys got the gig. I can't imagine subbing Davy, Peter, Micky or Mike for any of the others.

      To think Stephen Stills was originally considered. He didn't have that manic attitude...or did he?
      Guess we'll never know, but thanks Stephen for recommending Peter Torkelson.

    OMG, Mike Nesmith psychoanalyzing himself mercilessly. Mickey Dolenz's kidding dodges. Davy Jones politely weaving around questions that have no relation to where he's coming from. Peter Tork's self-effacing defensiveness. How the producers managed to get these four to keep from cracking each other up and work, I don't know how. It's fascinating and makes me ponder, generalizing rather, how vacant American men of today are by comparison. No quickness upstairs. None. These boys were amazing. TFP.

      Apparently he was the original one the show was developed for - at least according to an interview I just saw.

    • @MegaMagicdog
      @MegaMagicdog 8 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      True. He was already signed to Columbia and released a solo record on the Colpix label (which eventually morphed into Colgems - The Monkees label their original records were released on). They were trying to find a suitable vehicle for him and The Monkees turned out to be it. IIRC, Davy in his autobiography claimed that one show they tried developing for him involved a British boy and his look-a-like American cousin getting into sitcom hi-jinks together. That became The Patty Duke Show. My guess would be Patty could do a better pseudo English accent than Davy could pull off an American one.
      Mike also had a bit of an advantage since he was also signed to Colpix in 1965 (and recorded and released a few singles) and was performing at The Troubadour - where Bob Rafelson and Bert Schnieder saw him perform.

Mom got a letter back from Peter Tork when she wrote to him in the 60s. We went to their reunion concert in 1987. We waited for their tour busses to leave after the concert and Mickey and Davy waved at us, and Davy blew me a kiss. Then in 2000 Mickey did a free concert with his sister in a park and we went. Was there ever a Briton born who could not act? Or a Southerner? Jones and Nesmith are the most relaxed and natural in the little sketches, and there's a distinct charm to Tork and Dolenz that stands out. The producers chose well. It suddenly seems so striking that they were so young. Those were the days when everyone left home by 18 to sink or swim and to find one's
    tribe.

    Some stuff not everyone knows about Mike Nesmith (who graduated my high school in Dallas -- a few years ahead of me) --
    1) his mom got rich while Mike was a kid by inventing Liquid Paper, a typewriter correction fluid (younger readers may have to google that whole concept).
    2) he's a pretty fair songwriter having written, among other things, Linda Ronstadt's hit "Different Drum"
    3) he won the first Grammy ever awarded for Long Form Music Video
    4) he is considered the inventor of MTV

      Mike wore the hat to his first audition because he was in a rush that morning and hadn't had the chance to wash his hair. It ended up working in his favor because it made him stand out. The Producers kept saying "bring back the guy in the wool hat". It was actually even the name of his character in the pilot episode: the band's "manager" called him Wool Hat instead of Mike.

    • @mattkaustickomments
