    Randy , there isn't a person that could have given a more respectively honest opinion on the sailboat that you bought without maybe being negative to the previous owners . You explain everything very clearly without going on and on about one thing for ever . Very very well done ! Your honest and easy going nature shows with every word you speak . Thank you both once again for the great video's that you produce .

    If there's one thing I've learned about admiring all of these beautiful sailboats is that if I don't have unlimited funds I shouldn't buy a boat longer than 26 feet long, one without a fixed keel. I want a fiberglass, (not wood,) boat I can spend my time sailing and floating around on, reading and napping on for a week or 2 at a time, then load it up on a trailer and haul it home, and not spend most of my waking hours working on, worrying about, or tossing money into it. Sails in good shape, portable coolers for food and drinks, an electric trolling motor, battery-powered lighting, a pair of lithium batteries for aux power, jugs of water, sponge baths, a camp stove, and 4 or 5 flexible PV panels and I'm good to go. I can admire as they sweep me all of the majestic, teak an mahogany decked and trimmed boats dotted with glowing, polished brass and chrome, then I can go back to reading my book in peace. Captain Q and Ran-day satisfy my urges for more.

    I have been looking forward to seeing this. A positive note on the mass of snakes is the value of the scrap copper! Excellent presentation as always and the new camera man did a good job too. Thanks for sharing.

      Cameraman wasn't bad for a rookie, right? Yes, there will be piles of scrap copper for sure. Going to be very satisfying to get her up to ship shape. cheers!

    Ran-Day: Great tour and description of the host of little “gotchas” that come with buying anything used (i.e. car, boat, trailer, vacation home, etc…). My advice: buy several bottles of Goo-Gone to get rid of any adhesive left over after you peel off those red Dymo labels on the electrical panel, buy a couple bottles of 91% alcohol to get rid of those labels written with a Magic Marker, and buy a Brother label-making unit and start labelling everything with nice, easy-to-read, black on white 1/2” labels. Labelling switches, pumps, water lines, wire bundles, through holes, etc… makes a world of difference and adds a level of professionalism and clarity that can’t be beat. Pretty soon that Scheel 45 is going to look like it just came off the factory floor! Great job on everything you Captain Q do together! Looking forward to your next video update.

      Thanks, Darryl! You got it… great suggestion. I picked up a thermal printer (no running ink) to do the trick.. so important to be able to identify things without having to place the role of archeologist 😉

    • @darrylhedges1372
      @darrylhedges1372 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@YachtHunters If that thermal printer doesn't prove satisfactory, try the Brother PTouch model PT-D600 (available at any Staples or OfficeMax store). It has been an easy-to-use, versatile, and hard working unit for me. You can make 1/2", 3/4", and 1" labels in a snap, and the labels will hold-up to just about any environment! You can also choose from about 6 or 8 different fonts as well.

      @gordonshaffer5560 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@YachtHunters I second the suggestion on the Brother Ptouch label maker, and I believe if you connect the unit to your computer you will have much more flexibility in the design of any specific labels as I do with mine.

    Beautiful boat, Randay - the amount of light down below is incredible, and I'm very jealous of that bathtub.
    I appreciate the electrical tangle of an old boat - the first impression is "oh no! I gotta do something about this" But remember that it's been sailing along just fine like that for decades now. First, do no harm.
    I found that after a few months I got familiar enough with everything to start pulling out old wiring, and eventually ended up with a nice big hairball of copper that was no longer connected to anything.
    Once all the unused wiring was removed - the original wiring was rather neat and trustworthy.

  • @barryanderson5116
    @barryanderson5116 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Yeah, I had a Westerly sailboat with an electrical system that looked like that. What I did was to pull out all the unused cables. This took awhile, but when done, things were waaaay more simple and I improved after that. I believe if you pull out all the dead headed cables you will begin to get a grip on what is going on.

    Please don't stop the videos. I'm still looking for my boat and have been searching for a 34-38 ft boat to single hand. Hoping to buy one in the next 6 mths and head down the ICW to south Fla. With a little practice and some schooling i'll get out there soon. I watch everyone of your videos and would love to find a Pearson 385 ( My dream boat ) but they don't come around very often . I have learned so much from the Captain and Ran-day that i feel confident i could inspect a sail boat and get most of it right just by what i have learned from you all. Thank you both for being the sailors and teachers that you are. I bet there's a lot of hopeful sailors out there looking for advice from a experienced sailor and waiting for the answers you all have. THANK YOU BOTH....

    Great Boat, Ran Dee! Years of fun. And cursing. And baldness. I envy you.Captain Q. Yacht Hunter is one of my all time favorite You Tube channels. BTW - if I'm not mistaken, Halberg Rassi (sp?) sailboats were, for years, split bunks in the aft cabin. Makes sense, for a lone occupant and long, blue water windward passages. That's why you need a sea berth instead of a bar., if you're fortunate enough to have to share the aft cabin.

    Thank you Ran'Day for sharing your beautiful vessel with us. Yes there's a lot to be done but she's definitely worth it. The electrical room just Oof, Oof. That's going to be a lot of work tracking down all those wires but when you get it finished with modern panels it won't be nearly as daunting. Make sure you have someone with you when you go tracing all those as it's definitely going to be a two man job. Looking forward to your future vids and watching you bring her up to modern standards while maintaining her charm and character as it's obvious you're going to do. Like I said when you did the tour of this vessel there was just something in your voice that told me you'd fallen in love with her. Truly happy for you that you were able to purchase her and may all your dreams for her come true.
    Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless...

    Beauty of a boat. Great bones and lovely lines.
    My two cents: make it safe and functional to last a year. During that year, keep a notebook with you to fill with plans, ideas, questions, and notes. Then haul it out in the fall when you are ready for a major refit. The electrical is ugly, the engine needs work, but that inaccessible through-hull scares the bejeebies out of me.
    Step 1: make sure the life raft is functional and ready to deploy.
    Looking forward to seeing your journeys, both diy, and seafaring.

    This is fun watching. What a project. One thing I have to say: Be rid of the aft cockpit to avoid getting pooped and having it filled to the max......good luck, even with what looked like fairly large drains, it looks like you have a potential to start the chain towards sinking the boat right there. By getting rid of the aft cockpit you can correct the awful limited bunk space / height back there.
    So long bathtub.
    The electrical screams 'fire' to me.
    Beautiful boat. Glad to watch.

    Congratulations, I love her ! The wiring would drive me crazy with my OCD, I think I'd start from scratch

    Randy congratulations on your boat purchase. Like you I would have the electrical system totally redone. Get a pro to do it and some lithium batteries. I also like the possibility of gaining more space in the rear of the electrical cabinet. The engine room makeover will be part of the electrical update for sure. With Captain Q giving salty advice on projects and your own knowledge all this will come out just fine. I look forward to you sharing the upgrades on U Tube. Respect sent to you and the good Captain. Before you know it good weather coming and then, ⛵️🏝 👍

    Congrats on the boat Randay. I got lucky with my boat as the previous owner put all new wiring and panels in it because that might have been a deal breaker for me. I suck at wiring lol. That's pretty cool boat. The older ones at least in my opinion before the 1980's are solid boats. Yours has really nice woodwork inside also. Looked in real nice shape. I really enjoy watching your videos and again thanks for a fun and very informative boat showing.

    Fun video… it was interesting hearing the optimism of Capt. Q vs the reality of ownership.

    @6:00 Mal de mer.
    I've learned so much from this channel.
    For example, to day I learned a how to say . . .
    Seasickness, in French, and that word's "mal de mer"
    mal de mer

    Congratulations Ran-Day. Your days are going to be preoccupied for some time, no women chasing for a while. LOL 😂 It sure was nice of Captain Q to give you a heater. Sea Dog is looking forward to visiting you and giving you a special gift. LOL 😂 Just remember, with the faith of a mustard seed, you can move mountains. 👍🙏😎✌️

    That aft tub is one sweet partay cooler! Add me to your A list with Capt Q! I suspect the battery switching is for isolating whatever they’re wired to. Get a good multimeter and start testing. She’s a real beauty. Good luck.

    Congrats Ran-day. Good solid vessel! Someone may have already suggested it, but get yourself a good quality toner wire tracer. You basically use the sender to put a tone on one end of an unknown wire, and you can "sniff out" the other end of the wire using the toner tool which senses the tone signal.
