It's amazing how much I look forward to Thursdays to have the Captain and Ran-day show us their latest find. I've learned so much, and look forward to learning even more. Thanks for taking us along!
I watch this religiously every week. I don’t usually comment but I love this show. I love looking at cool boats but it’s the entertainment of your dialogue that makes it. I love what you guys do every week. Thank you!!
The rapport and banter between you both has me in stitches every week. It's like watching Abott & Costello, for those of us old enough to remember. Especially your back and forth about the huge mirror in the aft cabin. The pregnant pause, before the killer lines you delivered was masterful. I think you've really hit your stride this series. Nobody else imparts so much information, with such a light touch. Thanks again gentlemen. PS I barely noticed the 'chainsaw' at the end. I was transfixed by the sight of the Capt'n sitting in his stockinged feet in the water. In my fifty-five years, I've never seen such a sight before ;) PS hope the Capt'n's leg is fully healed. I imagine the warmish salt water helped it no end.
My wife and I met Bob Johnson, probably at a boat show prior to his building the Island packet Yacht company. We had looked at Irwins and endeavors, toured both factories; Bob had been a designer at both companies and the boats would have been great boats to live in at dockside. But we wanted to travel offshore and consulted with Bob for some time, then decided his first Island Packet was not ideal for crossing the Atlantic. We ended up buying a Bristol Channel Cutter and loved every minute we owned it before one of the Florida hurricanes damaged beyond what we were capable of repairing.
I so enjoy watching this channel. I especially love it when you come across an rare or older boat. Wish there were more West Coast boats, but you guys do a great job. Keep it up.
Love this channel. One thing I've learned is that the sailboat interiors all look pretty much the same. Thanks for these boat tours. I've learned a lot from you guys.
my grandfather had one of these and he loved it but he sold it before i got a chance to see it but this video really helps get a detailed run down of the boat so thanks for making this video
I think Google Translate needs to add Sailor Speak as an option. As a landlubber I enjoy your banter but only understand some of the convo when you thankfully add the captions. What I enjoy most is the funny back and forth between Randay and the Captain. Great videos guys.
Back in my boat hauling days I happened to spend a weekend at a parking area in So Cal next to a marina that I was going to make a pick up from on Monday this Marina also hosted the racing sail boats, there was a buzz about a particular boat that was coming in for the upcoming race It just happened to show up at the same location and weekend I was there .the strange thing was it had no keel .A second truck showed up latter that day with the mast's rigging and the keel the keel was tarped over Strange i thought why cover the keel ? you guest it it was the very first winged keel as i call it and I got to have a sneak peek at it .how's that for a bit of sailing history trivia . I was also the first person to transport a little sail boat that circumnavigated the world called the Serafin .
Thank you Captain Q. and Ran-Day for another relaxing and informative tour. Always look forward to my Thursday night visit. Take care and have a great weekend.
She'd make a great family cruiser as the Captain said but that chain plate definitely got my attention. I'd have to tear into that a bit and see what has to be rebuilt before even splashing her as that appears to be one of her main chain plates for the rigging. A lot of TLC and she could be awesome and the Captain's analogy about the old dog really fit. I hate to say it but maybe at half the asking she'd be an okay deal but then again... Fair winds, following seas, safe travels and God Bless.
I sent an email to Hormel, I hope it reaches the right people, The two of you do a great show maybe every else can send an email to them also have a great weekend

She is a beautifully designed boat. The water damage adjacent to the chain plate worries me a little, otherwise it seems in pretty good shape for a 34 year old boat. I am curious, when you say you emphasize that it is a 'coastal cruiser', what about this boat makes you say that. Usually, I would consider a 44 footer to be capable of at least some blue water sailing. Could you educate me as to why this is not the case? Thanks and I hope you are able to keep these videos going without getting too burned out with all the traveling. I appreciate your hard work!

I believe I would fix her up all pretty and flip her. Price becomes the issue really to turn a profit on the project. Critical I know but for some reason I never liked the quality of this boat. Great job once again Captain Q and Ran Day . Reminds me of back in the 70s and a hospital with really bad magazines. I stocked them up with about 300 of my own Yachting World etc in various waiting rooms. I remember this boat from one of the issues. Be well.
Love the Vids Captain Q! I'd really like to see and hear your thoughts on a Hylas 44 Center Cockpit. I saw one in my marina once but never got to see the inside. I think it'd be a beautiful boat to do a Vid on. You're Awesome!!!
We did a Stevens 47. Sister to hulas 47 Only difference hulas used gloss varnish below (my estimate ion) And the stevens we did just completed a 6000 mile run through NWP flawlessly I have not been on a h44 but I would expect very similar boats just three feet shorter. The 44 is a frers and the hulas and stevens 47s are S&s but no issue there

Oh oh so much to say. Like all production boats so many corners cut. My family in the early 80s bought a Irwin 31 citation. Why well let me tell you. We had club on Lake Minnetonka with several Catalina 30s and my family just couldn't buy off on a Catalina. So we almost bought a Sabre 30 a beautiful boat. A used Tartan 3000 and a new S2 9.1. The 9.1 would have been a killer in the MORC fleet on the lake which was a very serious deal but not at our club. So what to do.? A lot of parameters analysis. Well the Irwin rated pretty close to the Catalina 30 in Phrf. We knew the Irwin had way more storage. Well we bought one with out every seeing one. The boat was great. Best build hell no but pretty damn solid none the less. This 44 seems like an ideal looper boat. I was thinking only of buying a motor yacht for my loop boat. But now re- thinking that. Sorry Q , I know from 30+ years in the business no PB!! Thanks for giving another production boat a fair shake. Though I'm still the Swan, Baltic, Jonmeri kinda guy
Captain, you didn't say anything about the storage over the engine being a very hot place if you have to motor a bit. I wouldn't store any chocolate bars there.
Nice boat. It’s a lot of boat compared to a new Moody. I talked your ear off in Newport. Would you recommend this boat for coastal cruising and the Bahamas.
Thanks for this. Quite interesting boat. What does it make a coastal cruiser instead of a long range one? It has a center cockpit and a seaworthy rigg. To me it could be a pretty good long range boat. With additional equipment of course.
The issues with Irwins is the overall robustness of the structure and also the issue of how the boat handles in heavy weather (weather helm & issues with some of the fiberglass durability/construction). If you want to do coastal cruising and head to the Caribbean it's perfect fine... just those more significant crossings will really push the structure and sail-ability to the limit.
Agreed Graham. A Boat with too many problems. The owner, if he paid 25k for the paint job, shouldn't have bothered. Just sell it as it was and cut his loses. But, even "captain q and "sea dog"", were not aware of that Major Crack around the chains, until Ran dee chimed in with his two cents. The so called Paint job, was incomplete, and, probably intended to cover the Major serious cracks around the chain plate. Yes, i can understand why the owner is selling. Buyer beware! Up to seeing that MAYOR Cracks in the Area of the Chain Plate, i had thought it may be an interesting boat. But, once you piece all the problems together, they add up to = NO THANK'S. "captain q", you need to weed out the boats with Major Cracks, they Damage your channel. Separately, i see Ran dee was solo recently. Hopefully, your shortness of breathe has not worsened. If, you are ill, i wish you an early recovery.
Going to have to explain to me, what the difference is between a cruiser, and an offshore!!! If one is cruising around the whole Caribbean, are they not offshore? Another tip, or suggestion, could you, or would you, please say whether or no it's a boat for a single, or would need some help to control the sails and live aboard. 44 looks like a monster. This boat would also be a bitch in any fowl weather... Saw the propane tanks , but no grill. Also, where would you put your solar panels? If it's a cruiser, you'd need to cover up and collect power for that 5 day trip... Thanks
No offense Capt. Q, but I was always told to avoid Irwin sailboats as bluewater cruisers?? And that chain plate? WOW! That crack in that is pretty concerning!!
I agree with concern about the chainplates. Add some concern about the rusted and mildewed engine room and water in places it should not be. Any boat (car, house, etc.) with new paint but hiding problems says "keep looking" to me.
Sure… that’s a fairly short series of passages… we think it’s just the long term build quality and demands of circumnavigation that would probably stress the Irwin beyond its initial design intent
The boat needs alot of work at a selling price that high you should have new plumbing, electric, stowe is so old it's probably analog with mechanical gears chainplates inbeded in fiberglass bad idea and just cause you put a 25,000.00 dollar paint job does not make a boat sell , buyers are so much smarter then when this boat was produced

I refuse to watch the greatest boating duo in 360p resolution :) Oddly, this only happens with this channel's uploads in my subscriptions. TH-cam, get your act together!
thanks very much. we are frustrated with TH-cam taking up to a day to process our videso in HD... we don't always get them done a day ahead in time for the TH-cam elves to make them look their best. Thanks for enduring, Ahmet!!
Tony & Susan here, Really , Really Capt Q , I kept waiting for you to show me something special on this boat to make it worth the asking, But Really I do not see it.
i guess i am reaching into my yachting history. an errrwin is not a hinckley. Ok so she is a fun boat and trusty up to 25 kt of wind. after that reef and motor. after that even with the robust yacht… you are better iff in port. with everyone else
"We don't think this is a true bluewater, sailboat for sale nor a large ocean-crossing boat based on the reputation and construction methods that Irwin employed (thinner fiberglass layup)" - if it can't cross an ocean I wouldn't trust it 20 miles off shore.
yes... TH-cam seems to have a bug processing the HD version. They say it will be remedied within 4-8 hours. He needs to cool his dogs once in awhile.... :)
Without Prejudice The more i Think about the cause of the Major Structural Cracks around the Chain Plate...it occurred to me That this boat MAY have been struck by Lightening! If the boat was struck by Lightening, then a significant amount of Damage MAY have been caused to ALL IMPORTANT PARTS Of this boat. Perhap's potential PURCHASER'S should ask Questions, And, Seek A boat Report from a Qualified Surveyor?!! A Lightening Strike can cause the damage as seen, but, would also Damage Just about Every Expensive item on the boat, unless she has the Necessary Built in Protection's. Which is rare! Whatever caused the Major Cracks around the Chain Plate, i feel for the owner. But, i would feel more for any Life which was subsequently Unnecessarily EnDangered by going on the Sea Or Ocean, in a Dangerous boat, and, that goes for any Dangerous boat. In straightforward words Lives are more important than things.
Could be a very comfortable boat. I'd work them on the price. I'd like to hear a price closer to $1k per foot ish? $45 to $48k max. After a general survey.
I love all of the time and energy you into the videos but this one makes no sense. This is the perfect example of a charter boat and it’s worth about what they’re asking. How’s the shin CQ?
we like to showcase different strokes for different folks... this one would be great for a family looking to have some more local adventures and not necessarily go across oceans.
The chainplates are a big problem. Water from top trickles down the lumber and rots. A lot of repair work. I had a 40' irwin that was demasted cause of this. To much work on checking all components on boat. Besides setting mast and hauling it to water. Too much money to start.
This boat reminds me off a cheap condominium. That whiteboard is very tacky. I know u get what u pay for but l would not want it. Great video though lots of giggles
Ran-day....the video quality on this release today is only 360p. I ran one of your older videos to make sure it was not me and they worked fine. I was relieved to know that the Captain looked pale only because of the low video quality!!
Apparently TH-cam has some issues processing the HD format… very disappointing since we spend a lot of extra effort to make the quality good. Apologies 🤷♂️

It would be interesting to hear his take

Question for Captain Q:
What specifications determine whether a sailboat is “blue water” or “coastal?”
construction strength and experience of of others
some boats are built to withstand anything and that costs more money others are built for a market that willl never go that far from land but offer a ton of room and fun for their owners at a cost that's very manageable and allows you to put at least one child through college
Tank Storage size for water and fuel.
I wondered about displacement, ballast, mast(s), and sail inventory.
@@YachtHunters I’ll appreciate you elaborating on YOUR blue water criteria with respect to sailboat design.

Captain and Randy. How about interviewing an expert in Motion Sickness, either online or in person? It's a very interesting disabling sickness.

What makes it coastal only? Or maybe best is why someone wouldn’t want to use for blue water?
The issues with Irwins is the overall robustness of the structure and also the issue of how the boat handles in heavy weather (weather helm & issues with some of the fiberglass durability/construction). If you want to do coastal cruising and head to the Caribbean it's perfect fine... just those more significant crossings will really push the structure and sail-ability to the limit.
@@YachtHunters Thank you for the explanation.
@@YachtHunters Endure I shall! Back at it after three excruciating hours and multiple attempts, and it's now at 1080p :)
Tony & Susan here, Really , Really Capt Q , I kept waiting for you to show me something special on this boat to make it worth the asking, But Really I do not see it.
I loved the chart table. I really did ! The rest is left to the eye of the beholder
That chain plate would be a no go for me.
It’s just wood and glass. Tear it out and re build it
Easy and accessible and done all the time.
Would help in any negotiations 🤗
i guess i am reaching into my yachting history. an errrwin is not a hinckley. Ok so she is a fun boat and trusty up to 25 kt of wind. after that reef and motor. after that even with the robust yacht… you are better iff in port. with everyone else
"it has been put away a little wet..."
"We don't think this is a true bluewater, sailboat for sale nor a large ocean-crossing boat based on the reputation and construction methods that Irwin employed (thinner fiberglass layup)" - if it can't cross an ocean I wouldn't trust it 20 miles off shore.
62.ooo and a lot more to make good.
well said.... we would definitely build that into an offer price.... we consider the asking price to be the start of a conversation...
Looks like this video was rendered at 360p for me. Anyone else notice this?
TH-cam has some issues apparently… uploaded in 1080… hopefully they can clear it up soon!
A fan of Red Green, eh????
genius! :)
Very choppy video... I'll blame it on TH-cam. Why is Cpt Q in water during rating?
yes... TH-cam seems to have a bug processing the HD version. They say it will be remedied within 4-8 hours. He needs to cool his dogs once in awhile.... :)
Only 360p quality ?!
TH-cam doesn’t get a 10… their HD processing seems to be sinking. Apologies!
@@YachtHunters No drama. Still enjoyable to watch.
I like the layout of this boat very much. Two shower rooms! Wow.
Connor lost in Liberty and retook the cup in Stars and Stripes.
noted. thanks for the correction!! :)
@@YachtHunters Randy remembers every episode, he can easily be forgiven for not memorizing ever Americas Cup
Quality is only 360?? Yikes!!!!
Usually get 1080HD!!!!!
TH-cam glitch… should be good now.

The more i Think about the cause of the Major Structural Cracks around the Chain Plate...it occurred to me That this boat MAY have been struck by Lightening!
👏👏👍👍

Sorry to hear that
This boat reminds me off a cheap condominium. That whiteboard is very tacky. I know u get what u pay for but l would not want it. Great video though lots of giggles
This wet exhaust.
😂 it cools the output
Ran-day....the video quality on this release today is only 360p. I ran one of your older videos to make sure it was not me and they worked fine. I was relieved to know that the Captain looked pale only because of the low video quality!!
Apparently TH-cam has some issues processing the HD format… very disappointing since we spend a lot of extra effort to make the quality good. Apologies 🤷♂️
@@YachtHunters Bastards! No worries just thought you should know. You guys should think about doing a boat for "sail" -- as in not being sold but actually sail it and talk about it.You can start with my 1992 J/35C, only about 30 hulls ever made and you have not featured a J-boat yet! Salem, Ma
Come on guys, it's 2022! Why the poor quality of the video? Should be at least 1080P. 360 is laughable.
Agreed… TH-cam has issues processing the HD version. Some type of bug in their system… very frustrating. Apologies
STILL not a sponsor
😡
Come on guys stop stealing the babies job and quit the crying. So the video has poor quality. It's still ok
HD is finally available! TH-cam must have some gremlins in the computers
Too much roll .
