- Come with us as we continue our visit to Belize as part of our backpacking Central America travel series.. We arrive in the coastal village of Hopkins after travelling by ferry and bus from Caye Caulker. We share our time in Hopkins with you as we explore this village and try some delicious local foods.
Hopkins Village is a coastal village located in eastern Belize, south f Belize City . Hopkins is a Garifuna village on the coast of the Stann Creek District in Belize and is considered by some Belizeans to be the cultural centre of the Garifuna population in Belize.
The Garifuna are an indigenous people originally from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent
We had a great time visiting Hopkins on the way to Punta Gorda as we head south towards Honduras.

In case you don't know us - let us introduce ourselves - we are Chris (48) & Marianne (51). We are a married travel couple. We recently quit our jobs and sold our belongings to travel full time.
After more than 22 years of marriage we are still best friends
The aim is we are going to step foot in every country in the world before we die - or die trying !. We are currently also planning an epic around the world road trip. So stayed tuned for more clips as we TREAD the Globe in either Trudy the TREAD camper van or armed with our backpacks!
We will share with you our adventure and will post regular vlogs and videos of our full time travels showing the best the world has to offer and hopefully inspire you to travel more.
Currently we are backpacking our way around Guatemala and over the months will be continuing to explore and sharing the rest of Central America.

Very nice video. Brings back great memories. I spent a lot of time in Hopkins in the early '90's. The first time I was there electricity had just arrived in Hopkins, which everyone was very exited about. I also remember us lying flat on the middle of the main road waiting for a car to hit us, knowing that would never happen as there were maybe two cars in the entire village. We would eat at Timotea's house, who would become our mother, vicar -no swearing at the risk of getting no dinner, fortune-teller, doctor - she took care of my eye infection- and social worker - she advized us to go easy on the bitters, a traditional cure all alcoholic potion. We stayed at Ken's house as there were no hotels, so people would invite you to stay at their house in exchange for a small donation to the family household. Needless to say we stayed weeks instead of days and I went back several times, just to see all the friends we had made the first time we were there.

You took me back a little bit I remember being in Hopkins and done griga back in the early 90s and late 80s to and you're absolutely right we had barely got electricity and that time. I just remembered the kid in using lamps for our electricity. and everywhere we went we walk because they were is way less driving and drivers there. I have a grand aunt that lives in Hopkins behind a restaurant called Queen beans that is my grandfather's little sister. Hopkins is such a beautiful place I remember always being excited to go there because how beautiful it was/is. I remember as a kid our family giving us a ride from dangriga (where most of family is from) to Hopkins that red brick road would always leave our hair covered with a lot of red dust🥴😆
Hopkins is a wonderful place to visit, we go there at least every other year on vacation.

international airport is in belize city, rent a car or van and drive to hopkins. It is about 3 hours of driving. hopkins on the beach is most beautiful and quiet. i think it’s dreams resort i stayed at. the car allows independence to go to stores and do what you want. i loved hopkins and will live there shortly. People are nice but always be careful.

First time viewer of your videos, I am 8 minutes in and enjoy it very much so far. One thing I wish you had done was mention the temperature (and humidity if you know it) when you say it is very hot. That sort of thing can be relative. I am hoping to retire someday in Belize, but have never been, have you traveled to different areas? If so, what areas would you recommend for a beach town that is cheaper than the US? I have watched several videos from others on Ambergris Caye, and this is my first Hopkins video.. thanks for the video, well done.
