- In this episode we continue our Backpacking El Salvador series and we take a day trip from El Salvador's capital San Salvador and arrive at Lake Ilopango. An active volcanic lake. Unfortunately things didn't go according to plan and we suffered a diving emergency. Luckily we had great training and a positive outcome to what could have been a disaster.
We got to see how Pupusas - the national dish of El Salvador are made . We visit the Multi Plaza - one of the main shopping centres in San Salvador.

In case you don't know us - let us introduce ourselves - we are Chris (48) & Marianne (51). We are a married travel couple. We recently quit our jobs and sold our belongings to travel full time.
After more than 22 years of marriage we are still best friends
The aim is we are going to step foot in every country in the world before we die - or die trying !. We are currently also planning an epic around the world road trip. So stayed tuned for more clips as we TREAD the Globe in either Trudy the TREAD camper van or armed with our backpacks!

I am glad you are in El Salvador, I visit there basically every year. I have never seen or been involved in any violent scenario. As a security measure, dont take the public transportation, that is where danger may arise.
I recommend Ruta de Las Flores, there are some colonial towns with local good food there too.

Love you guys! Fun fact; the "Cadejo" is a supernatural creature in Salvadoran folklore. It is a terrifying huge dog with red glowing eyes which appears along the sides of lonely roads late at night to people trying to walk home. The white Cadejo will guard you and keep you safe, especially if you're tipsy and walking home after the bar closed. The black one is said to be evil and may in fact be the devil in dog form, and encounters with that one supposedly do not go so well. I am very glad that you only encountered the one in coffee form. :)

Hi, well done for not bolting to he surface. Looked like a very strange equipment failure with the second stage hose blowing of the first stage. What did the dive shop say about it? Must admit we never use rental regs, then again we are not backpacking so not limited by weight😜. Being O.O.A is something we practice very very frequently as ,as you said, it is a diver’s nightmare, so well done again for using your buddy .

Thanks a lot to show how beautiful and safe is my country. I just back from there to visit my family and I wished to have more time to do some tours at place I never visited. For some relatives suggestion, We took a tour to Honduras for snorkeling and some experiences with the Tribu Garifunas at Cayos Cochinos but we couldn't do it because a tropical storm was passing that day :( Next time, I won't listen them and I will book some tours in my native country and have fun like you guys did. Blessing from California. P.S. I won't take the scuba tour because I don't have the training to do that :)
I never saw a Salvadorean cook the pupusas on a skillet pan!!!! The correct cooking is a flat comal. ;)

I dive rarely these days but did a couple in Dom Rep last Christmas. Always good to have some TLC Marianne. Great work Chris always a massive concern equipment malfunction.

Wow that was a bit of an adventure 🤔 you did well to stay calm i’m not to do emergency accent 👍
I always take my own regulator with me From the look of what happened the low pressure hose from the first stage is separated that should never happen if there was a proper inspection of the equipment before entering the water I’ve been a commercial diver and done hundreds of sport dives around the world and I’ve only ever seen that happen once before that was due to a cylinder falling over with the regulator attached and damaging the low pressure pipe attachment but in that case it was noticeable as soon as the driver entered the water 👍
Anyway hope you haven’t been put off I do have a rescue course will help but also just practising body breathing purging a regulator before using it underwater and using a spare octopus rig Will also be very helpful to you👍
One other thing you need to be very careful of if you inhale water into the lungs even just one mouthful that can cause secondary Drowning up to 24 hours afterwards and there is no prior symptoms it can only be tested for by listening to the chest with a stethoscope or having an x-ray
Please don’t let it put you off diving it’s one of the best adventures you can have

I have been flying paramotor for years and i m now tired of it. But i will never go diving or do any water sports. I almost drawn once, in Zipolite where i m going back and i know how the sea can be dangerous.

Phil Knight (founder of Nike) sadly lost his son to a diving accident in the same lake. Was faulty equipment by the dive operator to blame?

I know everything about El Salvador Divers because I am the real estate agent that sold the company to Mick and he does not have right the money to properly maintain his equipment. El Salvador divers has lost their Five Star Padi rating. They are no longer a Padi dive center.

You cant trust taxis, uber drivers are safer
We have used the Taxi drivers - and had no problem, but for a tourist it is definitely easier as we don't know how much to pay or sometimes it is difficult to explain where you want to go - Thank you for your message 😉😍🤗Kind regards Marianne and Chris xx
TREAD the globe thats good actually Thank God, but i guess it also depends where you are going in El Salvador, if youre going to a certain neighborhood that is infested with gangs then youre in for a problem because sometimes the taxis work with them. Just becareful is all. Its also good that you guys are staying in a gated community. safezone
