- Lake Ilopango is a short drive away from El Salvador's capital city San Salvador. We visit this wonderful lake as part of our Backpacking El Salvador series.
Lake Ilopango is a volcanic lake, created when a huge eruption happened in around 410 AD and it was about 20 times as much as the eruption of Mount Saint Helens. Today although there is still activity below the water (see our diving video on lake Ilopango) now the lake is calm, with clear waters and local either swim or fish in it. It makes a great day out from the city of San Salvador.

In case you don't know us - let us introduce ourselves - we are Chris (48) & Marianne (51). We are a British married travel couple. We recently quit our jobs and sold our belongings to travel full time.
After more than 22 years of marriage we are still best friends
The aim is we are going to step foot in every country in the world before we die - or die trying !. We are currently also planning an epic around the world road trip. So stayed tuned for more clips as we TREAD the Globe in either Trudy the TREAD camper van or armed with our backpacks!

What a beautiful trip on an extinct volcano! If you're going to New Zealand, check out Lake Taupo in the North Island. It's exactly the same history as this Lake.

It's not extinct the last eruption of ilopango was in 1880 142 years ago and for a volcano to be extinct it must not have erupted in the past 10 thousand years plus this volcano went dormant for 1.3 million years

The eruption of Lake Ilopango was one of the most catastrophic events in human history. It occurred around AD 535, and it made the Dark Ages in Europe far worse. Crops failed from Europe to China, and it was the direct reason why the major city of Teotihuacan in central Mexico collapsed. As you can see, there are no traces of the volcano as the massive explosion completely disintegrated it and threw ash and pumice particles into the atmosphere which cooled the entire planet for years, ushering in crop failures and famine all over the world.

Hi Robert - it was so impressive - we actually went in the morning and then we headed off to Casa 1800 in Suchitoto so we did not have time to eat here - but there were lovely smells coming from the food places !! so it should be good 🙌🌴👍😍 kind regards Marianne xx
