Styx -- Another EXCELLENT selection. Probably their best known songs are "Blue Collar Man", "Babe", "Lady", and this one. "Blue Collar Man" is along the same rocking vibe as this one. "Lady" & "Babe" are ballads. However, I have 2 other recommendations- "Crystal Ball" & "Snowblind". Both are excellent rockers that show the range of the band.
Underrated? They had a whole heap of multi-platinum selling albums and was one of the biggest bands of all in the late 70s and early 80s. Which I'm very happy about, don't get me wrong, but we can't say they didn't get the success they deserved, because they most certainly did :-)
In terms of critical success, though, they absolutely are underrated...they should have been inducted into the hall of fame YEARS ago and they should be on a lot more "Greatest" lists... : )
@@erikthompson619 Nickelback also has had a lot of commercial success, but is also one of the most hated rock bands. Styx was subjected to quite a bit of Nickelback-style abuse in its day. Kansas, Reo Speedwagon and KC and the Sunshine Band, were similarly maligned as talentless sellouts.
This is Tommy Shaw leading on this one. Styx was great as they basically had multiple leads so the style could and did change frequently. Great live band as well. See if you can get some live performances. From Tommy Shaw songs - Blue Collar Man, Boat on the River, Crystal Ball, Man in the Wilderness, Fooling Yourself and Just Get Through this Night are favorites (but truthfully, there are no bad Tommy Shaw led songs). From James Young - Miss America, Heavy-Metal Poisoning, Snowblind (shared with TS), and Witch Wolf. From Dennis DeYoung - Castle Walls, Suite Madame Blue, The Grand Illusion, and Come Sail Away are my favs. I really love in recent years that they have a relationship with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra and have done concerts with them - once with Styx and one just solo Tommy Shaw. They are fantastic live performances and so fun to see all the young teens getting to play with them. Just caught one airing the other night and was fun to watch again.
I was watching your faces and waiting on the drop. First time everyone hears "Renegade" they get that look. The entire Paradise Theater album is superb. I just about wore out the needle and record back in the day playing that from start to finish. Hard to chose a "best" Styx song but "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Snowblind", "Fooling Yourself", "Blue Collar Man", "The Best Of Times" are all super good ones. For a great slow tune check out "Babe" from the Cornerstone album or "Lady" off Styx II.
Yea if they like the guitars (Tommy Shaw and James Young are *unreal*) Blue Collar Man or Snowblind...Crystal Ball is a mellower song with amazing dynamics. So happy you discovered the **GREATNESS** that is STYX!!!! xoxo 🙏
Just make sure, if you do Come Sail Away, that you don't get the video version that cuts out an entire section in the middle of the song. It's out there - I don't know why - and I've seen other channels get unknowingly shortchanged.
OMG, what a fantastic reaction!! I have to say, it's quite refreshing to see a young couple like yourselves (I'm in my 60's) getting such satisfaction from an old school song like this!! Almost brought me to tears. Music like this was my life's backround music growing up in the 70's and, unfortunately, just one more reason why my parents & I didn't get along. You two got the same satisfaction out of the song I got as a teenager, but my parents just thought I was a lowlife because of it. Music today, doesn't get into my soul like it did back then, & you two just proved to me that I was right... it was an awesome era for rock music, it's not garbage, & I'm not a lowlife!! (their words, not mine). I'm sure everyone will tell you about more STYX tunes that absolutely rock, so please indulge yourselves and take their advice. I promise you won't be disappointed!
I was fortunate I am nearly 50. My parents grew up in the 60s they were 18 in 1969 so they were all about rock music. My dad loved the doors, the stones and The Who. So when I started listening to grunge in the early 90s he was like “well it’s different but not bad” he just said “why do all the songs sound depressing?” I said if you were from Seattle you would probably sound depressed all the time too. 😂
I feel the same way about their reaction. My reaction to them was the same reaction to this song. I've heard this song a million times and they just made me fall in love with it again!
This was Tommy Shaw on both lead guitar, and lead vocalist, he's one of the best guitarist in the word, completely self taught, he can't read music, and he can't read charts, but what he can do is rip out a guitar solo like nobody else, even now, he's almost 70 years old and he's still one of the best guitarist in the world. Check him out in "Live from Daryl's house" unbelievable performance.
Hey there buddy! First of all, I love your name! Second, thanks so much for letting everyone know what an amazing talent Tommy Shaw is! He is such an underrated guitar player! However, (and I hope you'll forgive me) on the album track of Renegade, JY is playing the solo. Just listen for the whammy bar, and I'm sure you'll recognize him. He was one of the first guitar players in the '70s to start using a string lock beneath the headstock of his Strat. That's why his tremolo (whammy bar) was always so prevalent (and so cool!) in his guitar playing. Thanks for understanding, and keep rocking! 🤟🎸
@@lisaberry862 Thanks Lisa, yeah I love, love, love watching these two playing together, I can only imagine how great of friends they must be, they been together for so long, JY is always smiling, he's so long and tall, tommy is 5 foot nothing, and probably weights 100 lbs soaking wet, but they are AWESOME to watch. Have you seen Tommy on Live from Daryl's house, that's so fun to watch, or when he played with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, such a kind man to do that show with those kids, it was fun to hear stuff from his Bluegrass Album from that show.
This song features Tommy Shaw on lead vocals. the previous Styx song you did had Dennis DeYoung on vocals. My favorite Styx song. Try Too much Time on My hands, Mr. Roboto, or Babe next
It was 1979, after 6th grade. I had shut off the mower to empty the grass bag. Already a fan of Styx from their Grand Illusion album, I heard this play from the beginning on the radio in my backyard. I didn’t move for the entire song, which made my father none too pleased about my unplanned break. Thanks for the memory! 😊 Definitely check out Miss America for one of their harder-edged songs like you asked.
It's great when songs just take you back. When I was 13 in 1972, and walked home on a sunny day from school, I heard Babba O'Reilly from The Who blasted from an apartment building. Everytime I hear this song I'm back on that street in 1972.
Tommy Shaw was the lead singer on this one, he also sings lead on "Crystal Ball." Again, really nice storytelling that starts out mellow but packs a punch at the end.
This band was one of my big favorites as a teenager: "Blue Collar Man", "The Grand Illusion", "Queen of Spades" , "Fooling Yourself", "Come Sail Away" , "The Best of Times", "Suite Madame Blue", "Lady", "Sing for the Day", "Lorelei", "Babe",...omg, so many!
My brother worked for an AM radio station in the late 70s, He had this album, Boston,Queen and Kansas, Forgive me but by 1995 I was soooo tired of B Rhapsedy! can't even spell it lol.
Me Too...! Let me add to a great list. "Lights", "Miss America", "Snowblind", "Crystal Ball", "Why Me" "I'm OK", "Rockin The Paradise", And even "Too Much Time On My Hands".....
"Lady" was the song playing when I met my wife to be. Could not have been more appropriate. And the lyrics to "Babe" repeated over and over in my head as I got on the plane to leave her and attend Air Force Basic Training. Can't tell you how much STYX means to me.
And Ill recommend it again "Lady". The most lyrical melodic love song that CRASHES down into a thunderous riff so smoothly that you will find it hard to believe it works SO WELL. Makes Renegade seem like a lullaby. Do the original album version, not the 1995 remaster and not the live one.
I played this song over and over and over again, at highest volume during my junior year is high school. My absolute favorite Styx tune. Amber, your reaction looked very similar to the first time I heard it- I so love watching you get into a song!!
The Pittsburgh Steelers have played this songs for a number of years at home games in key defensive situations to hype up the crowd and players. Even had Styx play it live at a playoff game.
Here in the Midwestern U.S., we've been listening to Styx since 1972. Some of their hit songs: Lady from Styx II (1973); Light Up, Lorelei & Suite Madame Blue from Equinox (1975); Mademoiselle & Crystal Ball from Crystal Ball (1976); Come Sail Away was THE hit from The Grand Illusion (1977), but you can't go wrong with any song from that album; Renegade & Blue Collar Man from Pieces of Eight (1978)...
Saw them for the first time in 75. Lorelei was the encore and the sound crescendo was amazing! Of course there were things smoked that made it even better!
Styx is awesome, so excited to see you two discover them! If you want another great fast paced song then I suggest "Too Much Time On My Hands" you will love it for sure! They have many great songs over many albums.
Jay you say your a 80s faN But you NEVER Give the 70s bands and songs very little CREDIT WHY NOT ? I have noticed you really like alot of 70s rocks songs Like Renagate RATHER YOU NOW IT OR NOT 70s all the way Baby
Did you ever imagine, when you started all this, that one day you would be dancing in your chairs to some old-school classic rock? Or swooning over pre-rock-era crooners? Or falling for the female country singers of the 60s? Hard to believe that first video started what is sure to be a lifelong musical obsession, isn't it? :) Love you guys to bits.
I’ve probably watched this reaction a dozen times and it gets me every single time!! When that huge smile breaks out on Amber’s face and the dancing starts it’s easy to feel the pure enjoyment the song is bringing! Thank you guys so much for continuing to expose a new generation to this amazing music!
Thank you. I may have commented this before, and may do it again because I'm old and my memory isn't what it used to be, but I get so used to how good and great this kind of music is I begin to take it for granted, but watching reactors like you two and a few others listen to this kind of music for the first time and seeing how you react to it makes me remember just how great it really is and how thankful I am to have grown up listening to these songs. Keep listening.
One of the great things about Styx was that they sounded just as great live. There are so many different types of songs to choose from depending on the mood that you are in. Tommy Shaw is a great rock singer and guitarist, but he also has a smooth voice that he shows on "Crystal Ball".
best concert I've ever been to is Styx in St. Louis 1980...and the best concert I've ever seen on video, Styx with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra Cleveland 2006
Back when I had cable I came across a Styx concert broadcast on Palladia. They played straight thru The Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight. It was marvelous.
I appreciate the love you Jordan and Amber have for my generation's music and the artists of our generation,i can that you understand music ,it's simply amazing that your generation appreciates my generation's music ,keep up the work you do ,as young people you're a blessing to me
Imagine, A Cincinnati Bengals fan Loving THE song THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS play every game during a crucial time or when the Defense is taking over. Love You Guys
Love it when you guys rock out/chair dance. It always makes me smile and don't worry Amber you look good doing it. This all brings back memories of my youth/young adulthood when I used to dance to these songs at the weekly Saturday night dances or in the bars (once I was old enough to get in) in my little town. I'm disabled now unfortunately so not able to move like I once could but love watching you guys rock it. Thanks for the smiles & the good tunes.
You can’t even begin to imagine how incredible it was to grow up in the 70’s and 80’s .. every week, another blockbuster song was coming out on the radio. Even the one hit wonders were better than most songs from today’s bands. The songs told stories that we sang along with and immersed ourselves in whenever they played.
5:54 The part in the concert (when they perform live) where the ENTIRE audience is on their feet, hands in the air, and clapping in unison. Never fails.
There are TWO variations of Styx" There's songs like "Come Sail Away" written by longtime band leader Dennis DeYoung which were always more theatrical in nature, and then there's "Renegade" written by band member Tommy Shaw which always leaned more towards straight rock and roll. These two different styles brought versatility to the group, although ultimately leading to the band's breaking up for a time before reforming later.
Dennis DeYoung was the one who turned Tommy Shaw's song "Renegade" from a slower more bluesy song as originally written into a killer rock song. I would HIGHLY recommend "Queen of Spades"(starts out mellow like "Renegade" and then explodes into one of their heaviest, most menacing and majestic songs), "Blue Collar Man", "Midnight Ride" and "Miss America". Thank you for another great STYX reaction video and for becoming two of their newest fans :) Such a great band with so many incredible songs that cover the widest musical range and genres of any band, especially with 3 different songwriters and singers.
Yeah, this album started most of Generation X's foray into rock music. "Queen of Spades" was the first rock song I ever heard. This whole album is really a special album. Best songs from Styx: Lady, Lorelei, Midnight Ride, Suite Madame Blue, Crystal Ball, Mademoiselle, Ballerina, Shooz, Jennifer, Fooling Yourself, Come Sail Away, Castle Walls, The Grand Illusion, Sing For the Day, Blue Collar Man, Renegade, Pieces of Eight, Queen of Spades, Great White Hope, Borrowed Time, Lights, Babe, First Time, Boat on a River, Rockin' The Paradise, The Best of Times, Snowblind, Too Much Time on My Hands, Half Penny, Two Penny; Haven't We Been Here Before, Cold War, Don't Let It End, Double Life, Edge of the Century, Love at First Sight, Show Me the Way, Dear John, While There's Still Time, Waiting for Our Time, Radio Silence, The Fight of Our Lives, and Save Us From Ourselves.
Queen of Spades, indeed! Loved the heavy bass pedals in that song, and the whole construction and riffs -- everything. Pieces of Eight was to me, Peak Styx. Better than Grand Illusion and light-years better than what followed. Crystal Ball also a terrific earlier record.
I saw Styx in a smallish venue a few years back and was right up front. Between the tunes I yelled up to JY to play Midnight Ride, and he smiled and said, Thanks Man.
I loved Styx when I was a kid. For more of this kind of sound with Tommy Shaw on vocals, you might try Blue Collar Man or Crystal Ball. Too Much Time on My Hands is good, a bit lighter. There are the ballads with Dennis DeYoung on vocals like Best of Times, Babe, Sailing Away, etc. They even did a rock opera of sorts in the '80s (or at least a themed album/tour) with the iconic song Mr. Roboto that's been on ads and in The Simpsons, etc.
Oh Styx...the magic when Harmonious Singers, Guitars and Synthesizers meet!! Great reaction!! Apologies for the late comment. I truly thought I had watched this video before. Oh and Styx has MANY AWESOME songs. I could not tell you which one is my favourite. They are all Fire in my books!!
Not all Styx songs rock like that but there are so many great ones. "Blue Collar Man", "Suite Madam Blue", "Too Much Time On My Hands", "Mirror Mirror". The ultimate ballad is "Babe".
I don't know when he did it but Tommy Shaw recorded a lot of his music with a Cleveland area music school. Those are just fantastic to see High School kids playing orchestra instruments along with Shaw on guitar. Get the kids and have a great night enjoying special music together! Videos on TH-cam You want poetry you HAVE to check out Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man)
Those are two I recommend as well. I've only seen one person react to "Miss America" but it was a live version. I really would love to hear them listen to the studio cut of "MA"...
I was doing a Car show at Sea World Orlando a few years, and Styx played a concert at the stage there, Sea World had placed large screen displays all over the part so that the guests who could not get into the stage area could see them as well. The show was supposed to be an hour long but went well over that due to encores, every single person there was singing every song, on their feet the whole time, the lead singer of the Styx, Tommy Shaw, said that they never had really done a concert during the day, but to be able to see everyone so into their music that they just wanted to keep playing. It filled one of my childhood dreams to see them live, was truly an amazing experience.
I was a 17 year old Colorado kid going to college in Florida, and my then roommate talked me into seeing Styx; never heard them before but after that incredible show (The Grand Illusion Tour) I was hooked! They were sooo tight and put on an amazing show!
They were such an amazing band. Three vocalists, three songwriters. You never knew what they were gonna hit you upside the head with. Just love your enthusiasm and how much you guys pick up on all the little details of what makes these bands so great.
I know you two love the story telling and harmony. Blue Collar Man and Pieces of Eight are awesome Styx tunes off of this album. You will see their vocal diversity and diversity of musical style.
YES! 100% agree! This whole album is fantastic. Hell, everything up to(and in my opinion) through "Kilroy Was here" were great albums. They kinda dropped off the radar after Kilroy, though.... I remember listening to this album, and Paradise Theater on my Walkman while I was out and about. Great music!
@@IggyStardust1967 after Pieces of Eight, my next favourite album is Cornerstone. Of course the soft song Babe was the big radio hit, but my fav song off of the album is Borrowed Time. Although Eddie is a great tune as well.
@@ronsadler6047 Definitely agree. I know that "Kilroy Was Here" is their most "controversial" album, but I did enjoy it. It didn't measure up to their previous efforts, so I do understand the criticism that people have. I rank Styx up there with Journey, though. They both had some incredible music early on, and that's where I suggest new fans look. I'm all for the "deep dive" into their music. Go from the earlier stuff to the later, and see if you like it. I really love the fact that "younger people" are discovering this music, and appreciating it. It just shows how timeless it really is.
By the way, I have every Styx song ever made, even all the solo albums done by their individual members. I also have the 2 Damn Yankee albums that Tommy Shaw was involved with. One of their latest songs is Gone, Gone Gone.
Omg, High Enough!!! That takes me back to high school, when my friend's band's singer left and they were auditioning new ones-- I was hanging out with all the people who were waiting while another singer was in auditioning with the band, and the singers waiting all started improvving and harmonizing on High Enough, and it was soooo beautiful, and the energy and the creativity just blew me away!!! I don't happen to have any musical talent, aside from appreciating it, but I've always been surrounded by people with TONS of it (so many of my friends have been in bands, and my mom is literally the best singer EVER!) And I remember being so in awe and so jealous (but in an appreciative rather than negative way) of these people-- I so wished I could sing, I wanted nothing more than to join in the singing! It was just sublime!!! 🤩
Styx is great and so is this song! "Blue Collar Man" "Crystal Ball" "Fooling Yourself (the angry young man)" "Too Much Time on My Hands" "Snowblind" "Suite Madame Blue" are all great, up tempo songs, along with "Babe" & "Lorelei" which are love songs. Then, there is their infamous #1 hit "Mr. Roboto," which is so catchy yet so bizarre and effectively ended their run of hit songs.
"Don't Let it End" from the same album was a released as a single after Mr. Roboto and was a hit. I still hear it on the radio in Canada. Also "Love is the Ritual" off Edge of the Century did well in some charts and was on some of their greatest hits albums. It's one of my favourites (among many).
Styx doesn’t have a “most popular song”. With three writers/singers, they have a very diverse sound. They have rockers like “Renegade” and love songs like “Babe”. One constant about Styx is that many of their albums follow a theme. When you listen to a Styx album from start to finish, you feel like you’ve just finished reading a book or watched a movie. For recommendations: Fooling Yourself has a very cool keyboard riff, While it is not as heavy as Renegade, it tells a story. Sung by Tommy Shaw. Queen of Spades, like Renegade, starts slow and then explodes into wonderful madness. Sung by Dennis DeYoung. Half Penny, Two Penny is a banger from beginning to end, but tells a story as well. Sung by James Young.
I hope they get to some of JY's tunes. Most times he gets ignored. "Half Penny Two Penny" is one of my favorites from him. But "Miss America" is still my all-time favorite JY track...
I loved when you said it's so poetic. When I was a freshman in high school, I had one of THE best and coolest teachers. When we were studying poetry he let us pick a song we liked, we were able to bring in the record (yes I know, I'm showing my age), had the lyrics printed out for the whole class and we got to rock out and learn about poetry at the same time. Love you guys!!
We did that too and my choice was 'Castle Walls' from the 'Grand Illusion' album. I also used a bit of the song for my senior yearbook quote: "Far beyond these castle walls where I thought I heard Tieresis say, Life is but a dream and Every man must meet his destiny".
If you want another Styx rocker, listen to Blue Collar Man from Return to Paradise CD1. Styx is so melodic yet so hard-hitting, and their lyrics, as Amber noted, are so poetic. And Tommy Shaw and JY (James Young) are great guitarists. So glad you found this band.
Short story… I read about this song having read a story about the Pittsburgh Steelers. Being a big sports fan I always read sports stories. One of the guys that works at the stadium where the Steelers play football, love this song a young person. He got whom ever is responsible for playing music at their games to listen to this song… They made this song the entrance song to the Steelers getting on the field. And once that happens then Steeler town was down with renegade! Very interesting story but it also a great song
Great band. This song always reminded me of the wild west. You have a large catalogue to go through. Saw them a few years ago and they sound the same as they did back in the day. ❤️
I love your reactions! "Too Much Time on My Hands" by Styx is great too. Do the official video, if you do it. Also, a couple of bangers from another band in that era, Toto, are "Hold The Line" and "Rosanna". You'll like those too.
Got one for you with a back story... Ricky Medlock has been a part if Lynyrd Skynyrd on two different occasions...1970-1973 and 1996- Present. After 1973, Medlocke formed his own group, Blackfoot. Medlocke's grandpa was legendary blues and bluegrass musician Shorty Medlockr (1912-1980). Shorty had written a song called "Train, Train". Blackfoot recorded it it, with 67 year old Shorty playing Harmonica and Ricky handling lead vocals and lead guitar. It is FIRE 🔥, A rock song going going into the Top 20. Who gets to record a Top 20 song with and written by their grandpa???!!
Styx did the albums Equinox, Crystal Ball, Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight, Cornerstone and Paradise Theater in order, one each year starting in 1976 and there is so much good music in that 6 year run it's crazy. They also did 4 earlier albums which are decent, but they really found their sound with Equinox and then got really really good.
I will point out that "Styx II" is an amazing album, as are some albums that follow "Paradise Theater." I know there's lots of hate for "Kilroy Was Here," even though I think it's fine, personally.
Wow... I had every one of those, on vinyl. Wish I had kept them. Paradise Theater I feel like never gets much love from reviewers, but I always loved that one too.
Thanks for taking me back. From Equinox, 1975 to Paradise Theater on my birthday, 1981... everyone of them at The Omni in Atlanta. Every Styx, Rush, Jethro Tull show, plus a lot more. From 12-18 years old. What a great time to be a teen.
Sweet Madame Blue , Too Much Time On My Hands, Mr. Roboto, Babe, The Best of Time... the list of hits is long. Also, Laurence Gowan has been Styx's "new" frontman for quite a few years now. You should look into his solo material under Gowan (Criminal Mind, Strange Animal, Moonlight Desire... the list goes on).
You two "NEED" to check out their song Queen of Spades. Heavy, melodic, story telling, takes you on a musical journey etc. From the same album (Pieces of Eight) that Renegade is from. Dennis sings QOS and it one of my favorites. Styx was my first concert in '79 when I was 13. Been a Styx fan since '77.
Fun fact. I started grad school at Purdue in fall of 1972. I was told that Styx, having been formed earlier in that year in Chicago, was coming down almost every weekend to play free concerts at Purdue, mostly doing covers of other rock tunes. Then, in the fall, they signed a recording contract and hit the big time. The next time they came to the Purdue - West Lafayette campus, it was far from a free concert.
Dennis DeYoung is the musical guy, Tommy Shaw is rockabilly, and JY has the darkest songs. And they co wrote a lot of songs, so never a boring moment. Their earliest stuff was the hardest.
Can we all agree that when they upload our day is instantly better!😍
Absolutely! 😁

Great reaction.

Styx deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are upper level music. Hit after hit after hit.

Styx was Fantastic in the 70s 80s not so much

Now, that's some truth!
Yeah, I was waiting for the drop to see their reaction too. They didn't disappoint.
Yea if they like the guitars (Tommy Shaw and James Young are *unreal*) Blue Collar Man or Snowblind...Crystal Ball is a mellower song with amazing dynamics. So happy you discovered the **GREATNESS** that is STYX!!!! xoxo 🙏
@Ruth Mayhew yes, the mandolin too on Boat on a River ....just one if the greatest bands EVER. 😊❤️
Renegade and BCM are off of the pieces of 8 album but I do agree paradise theater is an awesome album

It's validation, all.over again. STYX keeping classic rock alive in 1979!
Her smile made the video. She was so happy.
"Suite Madame Blue", "Come Sail Away", " The Grand Illusion", "Fooling Yourself" are my top picks from Styx.
Hell yeah!!
YES, Suite Madam Blue!!! Who knew it would be more painful today than when it came out? Ouch.

(their words, not mine). I'm sure everyone will tell you about more STYX tunes that absolutely rock, so please indulge yourselves and take their advice. I promise you won't be disappointed!
Don't worry about what they said. I was a weirdo (according to my parents) because I listened to Duran Duran. I'm 53 now, and still a weirdo. LoL
Thanks!! lol Good to know I’m not alone!!!
You should watch reaction to Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas flood
I feel the same way about their reaction. My reaction to them was the same reaction to this song. I've heard this song a million times and they just made me fall in love with it again!
That drop is a killer! Y’all’s faces when he let out the scream, the drums slap down and the guitar kicks it was priceless🥰🤣
👍👍Tommy and JY Rock!!!
Damn Yankees !!! 😊
Maybe that's why Tommy was discovered playing guitar in a Montgomery, Alabama Bowling Alley!
Sewet madam mousel was their Rocking'EST song. Pardon the spelling.
This is one of those songs that is so much fun to watch a reaction to - 'cause we know what's coming ... 🙃🎵
Kinda Shock Rocked
Exactly
This song features Tommy Shaw on lead vocals. the previous Styx song you did had Dennis DeYoung on vocals.
My favorite Styx song.
Try Too much Time on My hands, Mr. Roboto, or Babe next
Those are my favs too
Fun fact, this song is a hype song used during Pittsburgh Steelers games. The entire audience joins in singing. Its amazing to witness!
Absolutely, I've seen it first hand!
Go Steelers!!!!!🖤💛🖤💛🖤💛
When he first out his arm up I saw the terrible towel wave!
@@debibailey2968 Hell Yes!! My team sense 1972!👍✌️
I still get goosebumps, from being part of it, everytime I hear this song. Stiller nation!
Amber is just such a hoot to watch! Her reactions are the best.
Definitely check out Miss America for one of their harder-edged songs like you asked.
It's great when songs just take you back.
When I was 13 in 1972, and walked home on a sunny day from school, I heard Babba O'Reilly from The Who blasted from an apartment building. Everytime I hear this song I'm back on that street in 1972.
That is a great song,!
This is why the 70s were and are the best DECADE The FANTASTIC MUSIC LIKE THIS
❤❤❤
Tommy Shaw was the lead singer on this one, he also sings lead on "Crystal Ball." Again, really nice storytelling that starts out mellow but packs a punch at the end.
I Love"Crystal Ball"! It was the first song by Styx that I ever heard.
Crystal Ball is a great song, I love playing it on guitar!!
All those you listed were huge and so big in my teenage years as well!
My brother worked for an AM radio station in the late 70s, He had this album, Boston,Queen and Kansas, Forgive me but by 1995 I was soooo tired of B Rhapsedy! can't even spell it lol.
Suite Madame Blue
Me Too...! Let me add to a great list. "Lights", "Miss America", "Snowblind", "Crystal Ball", "Why Me" "I'm OK", "Rockin The Paradise", And even "Too Much Time On My Hands".....
I think the best thing about reaction videos is watching someone else enjoy something you've enjoyed for so long.
"Lady" was the song playing when I met my wife to be. Could not have been more appropriate. And the lyrics to "Babe" repeated over and over in my head as I got on the plane to leave her and attend Air Force Basic Training. Can't tell you how much STYX means to me.
Can't wait for the drop, this is going to be fun.
And then they can do "Suite Madam Blue" and "Miss America".
Must be Lady from Styx II. Definitely Suite Madame Blue with Prelude 12 intro is a must too.
Must be Lady from Styx II. Definitely Suite Madame Blue with Prelude 12 intro is a must too.
Yes - Lady shows off that crystal timbre of DeYoung's voice the best!
I played this song over and over and over again, at highest volume during my junior year is high school. My absolute favorite Styx tune. Amber, your reaction looked very similar to the first time I heard it- I so love watching you get into a song!!
For me it was junior high, but I wore this album out.
Tommy Shaw, baby! This was Junior year for me, too. :)
Back in the day the soundtrack of my life !
Thanks for your energetic reaction!
Amber smiled all the way through this song!! 😊😊
I love, Love, LOVE that yet another generation is discovering the music of my teens. Styx is so underrated.
I love when young people love the music from my teenage years. I love your channel.
Great summary
Another of great groups from Chicago
Styx is awesome, so excited to see you two discover them! If you want another great fast paced song then I suggest "Too Much Time On My Hands" you will love it for sure! They have many great songs over many albums.
Mr. Roboto!
Wow, wow, wow! I have spent the last 2 hours watching your reactions! you guys are awesome! thanks for making my Saturday night!
This might be the best Amber reaction of them all when the song really kicks in at the beginning.
Jay you say your a 80s faN But you NEVER Give the 70s bands and songs very little CREDIT WHY NOT ? I have noticed you really like alot of 70s rocks songs Like Renagate RATHER YOU NOW IT OR NOT 70s all the way Baby
‘Lorelei’ is a must!!! ‘Come Sail Away’
Lorelei is a cool tune. Come Sail Away is the one Styx song they did previously.
Also good, Styx- Too much time on my hands
I’ve probably watched this reaction a dozen times and it gets me every single time!! When that huge smile breaks out on Amber’s face and the dancing starts it’s easy to feel the pure enjoyment the song is bringing! Thank you guys so much for continuing to expose a new generation to this amazing music!
I want to go to a rock concert with Amber! Her energy is infectious she would be so fun to jam with.
Styx....one of the most absolute best concerts I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. To Much Time On My Hands and Babe are absolute must listens!
Yes! What Kevin Franks said.
I sang crystal ball to my kids as a lullaby when they were little. Awesome lullaby.
I just got back from a Styx concert and I was blown away. They sounded exactly like the album
Crystal Ball 🔮 my favorite song
Back when I had cable I came across a Styx concert broadcast on Palladia. They played straight thru The Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight. It was marvelous.
I appreciate the love you Jordan and Amber have for my generation's music and the artists of our generation,i can that you understand music ,it's simply amazing that your generation appreciates my generation's music ,keep up the work you do ,as young people you're a blessing to me
I do agree
Love this song! Try “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)” next please 🙏🏼
My all time favorite Styx song. With "Miss America" in a very close second...
Absolutely! I was thinking the exact same thing! Amen!
Agreed! That's awesome too!
My favourite Styx song is Boat On The River, close second is Lights. The entire Cornerstone album was awesome.
~FM :)
Don't forget about James Young, with songs like "Miss America" and "Half Penny Two Penny"
@@mikeb3835 Doctor Righteous 🎸🔥
What? No love for Mr. Roboto? ;)
@@fadetoblack1026 nope 😄
I saw Styx in a smallish venue a few years back and was right up front. Between the tunes I yelled up to JY to play Midnight Ride, and he smiled and said, Thanks Man.
Blew my speakers on Queen of Spades. Just a fuse lol
This goes to show ya how OVER SPOLID us 70s Brats were lol
Oh Styx...the magic when Harmonious Singers, Guitars and Synthesizers meet!! Great reaction!! Apologies for the late comment. I truly thought I had watched this video before. Oh and Styx has MANY AWESOME songs. I could not tell you which one is my favourite. They are all Fire in my books!!
Graduated in 77’ , the pinnacle of Rock and Roll. Welcome to my world 😃
Not all Styx songs rock like that but there are so many great ones.
Videos on TH-cam
You want poetry you HAVE to check out Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man)
Miss America and Blue Collar Man are awesome too!
Those are two I recommend as well. I've only seen one person react to "Miss America" but it was a live version. I really would love to hear them listen to the studio cut of "MA"...
You guys are so real. Love your reactions. So good to know you are open to hearing all kinds of music, especially Classic Rock. Peace.
Just love your enthusiasm and how much you guys pick up on all the little details of what makes these bands so great.
great comment
We're?!? They still got it! Thier last two albums were pretty solid ...
We’re - they are in tour right now
I know you two love the story telling and harmony. Blue Collar Man and Pieces of Eight are awesome Styx tunes off of this album. You will see their vocal diversity and diversity of musical style.
Remember the I Am Kilroy era with "Mr Roboto"?
YES!
Styx was the best of the 80's bands. Their music was innovative, their lyrics absolutely amazing and their shows that was a most see.
More like70s bands .This songs from the 70s PERIOD
Saw Styx in a bar back in the 70s, they are badass
By the way, I have every Styx song ever made, even all the solo albums done by their individual members. I also have the 2 Damn Yankee albums that Tommy Shaw was involved with. One of their latest songs is Gone, Gone Gone.
Yes some Damn Yankees need to make the rotation!
Not true. Their very next studio album "Edge of the Century" had a hit with "Show Me the Way."
BLUE COLLAR MAN. It is indisputable. No other Styx song rivals Renegade for power… PERIOD!! Thanks for the good vibes, love you guys. 🙂
I agree!!
I know..right..that guitar riffs gets me EVERY TIME 💜🦩☝️
Possibly the first Styx song I heard and I never looked back. Love Styx!
For recommendations:
Fooling Yourself has a very cool keyboard riff, While it is not as heavy as Renegade, it tells a story.
If you like styx you should definitely try Suite Madame blue by them!
We had the best music back in the day. Today's music can't hang!
OHHH the memories of dancing/singing this song in HS and College at frat parties back when this was popular!! SOO much fun! :)
When this song hit into gear, she was adorable!! great song guys!
STYZ - LADY - you will probably want to find a live version
"Fooling Yourself", "Too Much Time On My Hands" "Lady" "Miss America" are all amazing songs.
I also used a bit of the song for my senior yearbook quote:
"Far beyond these castle walls where I thought I heard Tieresis say,
Life is but a dream and
Every man must meet his destiny".
This has to be my favorite reaction I've seen you two do. Loved the sheer joy on both of your faces.
Totally opposite of Renegade is "Babe", Styx's only number 1 hit. One of the best ballads ever written. You guys will love it!
"The Best of Times" and "Mr. Roboto" along with "Babe" were number 1 hits in Canada.
@@labyfan1313 Yea...but Canada don't count.
Blue Collar Man , The Grand Illusion are great Styx songs.
Tommy Shaw of Styx was also in The Damned Yankees with Ted Nugent.
And Jack Blades from Night Ranger.
I've listened to Styx since the beginning of their career. Their most rocking song by far is Miss America.
That made my day to see your reaction to that drop!! The sheer joy on your face was priceless!!! Thank you!!!!!♥️♥️♥️
Great band. This song always reminded me of the wild west.
You have a large catalogue to go through.
Saw them a few years ago and they sound the same as they did back in the day. ❤️
Yes, I always think of the wild west, not modern day police.
James Young was a very underrated guitarist, this is one of his best
JY was my favorite too!
You are so right, he was SO underrated! To this day, I still don't understand why he, and Tommy, aren't in more Top Guitar Players lists. 🎸
Finally, back to my music, we're rocking again🎸
Incredible band. Fun watching people enjoy these old jams.
This song is played at Pittsburgh Steelers home games to get the crowd going!!!
"Blue Collar Man" and "Too Much Time on My Hands" are two more Styx classics. For a complete change of pace with their music, you can try "Babe"
They also play this song at the Pittsburgh Steelers home games going into the 4th quarter.
I just found you two! Wow! I have new friends to watch movies with and listen to music with! Lol.
Agree. Styx was a huge part of my high school days music. Right up there with Kansas, ELO, Rush, and ELP.
Concept albums. One song led to the next.
Tommy Shaw does the vocals on this. Love Styx!!
One of my favorite bands ever, you could listen to them all day and not get through all of their great songs...
This is my favorite Styx song. Glad y’all enjoyed it. Loved the smiles washing over both your faces when the whole band kicked in!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Dennis DeYoung is the musical guy, Tommy Shaw is rockabilly, and JY has the darkest songs. And they co wrote a lot of songs, so never a boring moment. Their earliest stuff was the hardest.
This is a song written and sung by Tommy Shaw, who really brings the rock to Styx songs. He's an awesome guitarist as well.
The SUPER 70S was a treasure trove of INCREDIBLE MUSIC THAT CAN'Tbe TOPPED!!
