I’m 67 years old. I love witnessing young people discovering past music that was iconic in the day. So fun. This song I have pinned as my oldest son’s theme song of life. 😂
I’ve known Tommy Shaw for 32 years now. We met in 1990 through a mutual friend and we wrote the song “keeping me alive“ together. When I met Tommy STYX had broken up years earlier and he embarked on a solo career which was short-lived. In 1991 he started the project Damn Yankees with Ted Nugent and Jack blades from night Ranger I forget the drummers name he was a young guy and really amazing. The only thing that’s bigger than Tommy’s talent is his humanity. He is truly one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. I’ve seen him do things for complete strangers even show up at someone’s wedding that he only met once to play a song for them. 🕊❤️🎼
Lead singer Tommy Shaw is similar to Joe Walsh and the Eagles. Once they joined their respective bands any new easy listening songs suddenly took a back seat to pure rock & roll. As usual a great choice. 👍👍❣️
Styx are ridiculously talented, there were actually 3 vocalists in the band, but Dennis and Tommy were the most prolific. Never let Tommy’s little baby face fool ya. Great singer and guitarist.
"The Best of Times" is one of their best songs and one of their biggest hits. Dennis DeYoung sings that song and it's such a pretty song. It came out in 1981, the same year as this song. "The Best of Times" would be great to review and I hope they do review it.
You have to watch the whole video of Styx live with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra and Chorus of Cleveland and I guarantee you will fall in love with Styx
Those “plastic tubes” you are referring to with the drums are called Octobans . They are melodically tuned in sets of eight (hence the name) and they are also referred to as “tube toms.” They have a unique sound similar to a regular tom tom but higher pitched.
I just saw Styx & REO Speedwagon in concert last month & both KILLED IT!!!! It was truly amazing at their age they perform at such a level. It was like singing all my childhood songs that I normally sing in my car alone w/ 20,000 other people!! Great band!!!!
Yes, I agree that STYX had a lot of great songs! I am 60 years old and grew up with STYX and REO, but to be honest, STYX is not truly STYX without Dennis’ amazing voice!
This lead singer is Tommy Shaw. Tommy later formed Damn Yankees with Jack Blades of Night Ranger, Ted Nugent of The Amboy Dukes, and drummer Michael Cartellone of Lynyrd Skynyrd. I saw them in 1976 and it was the loudest concert I ever saw! Tommy did something interesting: He came into the spotlight & introduced a song, he had written, before he became successful and was down & out. It was called "Crytal Ball" and revealed his concerns about his unknown future. This is a very emotional and moving song, and still gives me goosebumps. Please react to Crytal Ball.
I didn't know about the drummer being from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Another cool band that Jack Blades is in is Revolution Saints. Also Doug Aldridge of Whitesnake, along with Deen Castronovo that was in Journey for years are in it. He sounds like Steve Perry, too, but with his own sound. It's a great sounding band. I really like the song, "Light In The Dark".
"Crystal Ball is my 3rd favorite Styx track. Ever since I was a teenager, "CB" has held a special place in my heart. It was my 'go to' tune whenever life wasn't going so well, {which was often}...
Great react Jay and Amber. Styx is so underrated - why they aren't in the Rock Hall makes no sense. If you haven't seen it, check out Styx playing live with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra. The kids add an amazing element to Styx's songs. The band obviously loved it, and the young musicians were inspired and excited to be playing with Tommy and the boys.
Fun fact. Dennis DeYoung was a public school music teacher before Styx secured a record deal. Also, Babe was a huge hit when my hubby and I began dating back in high school. It’s still our song to this day❤️❤️
This was posted on social media a lot when Covid hit and we were all shut down and home. A humorous way of dealing with the crisis. This is one of my favorite Styx songs!
Ah, my favorite band in high school. Love them. Tommy Shaw is the lead singer in this one. This whole album, Paradise Theater, is one of their better ones.
The drummer in this video is John Panozzo and he is Rockin' In Paradise now, but answering your question, the long acrylic drums are called Dragon Drums. Much like Octobans, but cut longer. They sound amazing on Castle Walls off the Grand Illusion record. You can also see them on the Borrowed Time video.
Styx was really two bands in one --- the Dennis DeYoung version and the Tommy Shaw version depending on who wrote and sang a particular piece. For more of the Tommy Shaw version listen to Fooling Yourself, Renegade, Blue Collar Man and Boat on the River.
About six years ago I saw Dennis Deyoung live in Los Angeles. It was a small venue and the concert was being recorded. Dennis had decided that times were tough and asked that all tickets be sold for $5 a piece! He is a class act.
Styx is one of those bands where multiple members could be the "front man" depending on which song you're listening to. This happened a lot in the 70's. The ultimate example would be Fleetwood Mac, but it was all over the place back then. In terms of their next biggest song you haven't done yet, that'd be "Blue Collar Man."
Definitely one of my favorite Styx songs. I think this make five Styx songs you've done, and you've only scratched the surface. "Lady" is a classic from their early years, as is "Blue Collar Man". From their 80s discography you can react to "The Best of Times", "Don't Let It End", or "Show Me the Way". You can also branch off if you like and do some Styx members' solo stuff, like Dennis DeYoung's "Desert Moon" or Tommy Shaw's "Girls With Guns". BTW, it was Dennis who did the lead vocals on most of the songs you've reacted to... but it was Tommy this time.
And Tommy Shaw's "What If (Remo's Theme)", which was the theme song from the movie "Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins" - a fun movie, but didn't did well at the box office. It was supposed to be the first in a series of movies based on the long running book series "The Destroyer" by Warren Murphy. Remo is a cop that was framed and sentenced to death. His death is faked and he is trained as an assassin for a secret government organization. Anyway, I digress. The song was great.
This is one of the best performances I've ever seen in concert! Tommy Shaw was killing it when he did this song. And hey, he lived in the next town over, Niles MI, around the early 80's. (You also heard Tommy sing lead on Renegade)
I didn't know that he had a home in Michigan! Is that how he and Ted got together? I grew up in Clarkston in the late 70s and 80s. Bob Seger had a home there then.
@@theresatrapp4532 I don't know how they got together, but I'm glad they did. 😁 Yeah, he had a place in Niles, all those years ago. lol. Bob Seger, now there's a singer!
From this album..."Rockin' The Paradise" & "The Best Of Times" are musts, and were the other big hits from the album, but I also love "Lonely People". Other Styx songs: "Show Me The Way", "Don't Let It End", "Blue Collar Man", "Lady", and "Suite Madame Blue" are also amazing. Tommy Shaw is the vocalist on this one.
Styx is one of my favorite groups, going all the way back to 1972. I saw them twice in concert in the 70's, and their shows are amazing. I'd like to suggest that you look at the shows that the band, and later Tommy Shaw, recorded together with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra and Chorus. I especially liked this very song done my Tommy and the orchestra.
Tommy Shaw is singing lead on this one.You should react to Tommy Shaws other band Damn Yankees. It has Ted Nugent and Jack Blades(Night Ranger) in the band and they have some great songs. You would love the songs Come again and High Enough
Don’t forget “Silence is Broken” and “Where You Goin’ Now”! Tommy Shaw and Jack Blades paired up as well and had a couple hits, though I admit I’m blanking on what they were at this point. But ABSOLUTELY check out Damn Yankees!

Just saw Styx last night in concert and can happily report that Tommy Shaw still sounds amazing. He and James Young’s guitar playing was outstanding as well. Definitely worth seeing if you have the chance.
I've been lucky enough to see Styx twice. What always amazed me is when you hear Styx on the radio it's always a ballad, a "slow" song, but in concert they are heavy metal. I remember Tommy Shaw (the singer in this song) stepping up to the mike and saying " when I was in highschool and got home I'd start playing my guitar and my dad would come in and say turn that damn thing down!!! Right then and there I decided that when I was older I'd play my guitar any damn way I wanted." Then they started playing this song. 🙂
Love this song. From 1981, their only Top 10 that Tommy Shaw wrote and sang on. Guitarist J.Y. Young also sings lead on a few songs, including Snowblind. Dennis DeYoung parted ways with the band for good in 1999. Lawrence Gowan joined and took over Dennis' vocal parts and he remains with them today.
Lawrence Gowan, 🇨🇦, who had his own career before joining Styx and they let him do some of his own songs that were hits here in 🇨🇦!! Or at least they do when they tour 🇨🇦!!! 😂😂😂
This song takes me back to cruising the strip with my friends and hanging out! I do wish you guys could have experienced the 80's. It was the BEST time to be a teenager. There's never been another decade with such a vast array of different musical instruments and synth beats that is now iconic. I hope that with discovering this music now you guys get a feel for what the 80's were about and how much fun was had by those of us who experienced it first hand. ❤
Styx was my first convert and set a standard for all concerts that follow. It was the Kilroy Was Here Tour. High standard and top three all time fave bands for this girl. Tommy Shaw was a teenage heartthrob to me. That set another standard to me!
Great band! My all time favorite by this group is 'Come Sail Away', also 'Babe', 'Blue Collar Man,' 'Lorelie' (which I think you've already heard, not sure" and many more.
Styx was one of my favorite bands. I loved the mister Roboto concert. The whole paradise theater album is great. It was also “holographic”. I still have the album from the early 80s. Pieces of 8 was another great album.
3 People from this line up of Styx (I say this line up because the members changed several times through the years) served as lead vocals. Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw you know has done vocals, but another member of this line up James "JY" Young also does vocals for the band. Some of the songs he has done in the 70s early 1980s include Miss America, Great White Hope, Lord of the Rings, Half Penny, 2 Penny, Heavy Metal Poisoning and Double Life.
FYI- The story behind "Babe" was that it was NOT to be recorded by /for STYX. Dennis wrote it for his wife. On her birthday, he performed it to her at a private party. He was badgered into recording it after the band agreed it was too good not to. The 'wandering;' keyboard intro was actually DeYoung playing around on a new electronic piano which he'd never tried before. He didn't know recording had begun. Crazy.
Awesome song I love it! The cool thing is that my wife just saw them live in Nashville Monday night! They still got, loud and proud! Thanks for all your hard work and keeping great music alive.
Drums are cylinders of varying lengths with a more flexible membrane stretched across the opening - "the head". Those tubes are small acrylic drums typically called Octobans or tube toms.
My favorite group ever! This is a great song! They are a deep hole! Check out the songs Grand Illusion, Crystal Ball and Little Suzie! Tommy Shaw is singing this song!
Paradise Theater and Grand Illusion are my favorite Styx albums. Paradise is great beginning to end! FyI if you also want to hear some of James Young’s lead singing, then react to “Snowblind” from this album, and Miss America from Grand Illusion.
"Suite Madame Blue" is a must. Love to see you do all of the "Paradise Theater" album from 1981, but that doesn't seem to be your thing. What you're doing is great! Love it!
That's Tommy Shaw singing. For the next one, try "Fooling Yourself" or "Boat on the River". In 'Boat on the River' video, I was pleasantly surprised to see them play an accordion and a mandolin. It sounds awesome.
Back in 2017 Styx played at our local “Spiedie Fest and Balloon Rally” here in Binghamton, NY. After the concert the band members came to the club where my boyfriend’s band was playing. Needless to say they sat in with his band (“Splash”) and jammed. They did Their hit Renegade it was very memorable and yes the band members were great guys! Good times!
I remember seeing this video on MTV when it first went on the air. As a little kid, I thought it was hilarious! This is one of my mom’s favorite bands so I grew up on Styx. The two other bands she couldn’t get enough of were Foreigner and Journey. I grew up listening to many different genres of music but rock from the early 80’s was my mom’s JAM! 😂 Great video, you two! 🥰
Let's not forget Kansas! When someone asks about "the oldies" I say all 4 of these band names! My "oldies" anyway...they all hit when I was a teen. Boston, Bon Jovi, and Fleetwood Mac all get honorable mentions too
Love to see you two rocking to Styx. Several other songs that I recommend, "Grand Illusion", "Suite Madam Blue", "Rockin' The Paradise", "Best of Times", and "Blue Collar Man".
Love Styx...went to several concerts and have most of there albums.....love playing them for my grandchildren. I think you would like "Don't Let it In"
Styx is a great band with two amazing vocalists: Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung! They have so many great songs to choose from, and I recommend you check out these next: Guitarist Tommy Shaw sang lead on "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)", and "Sing For The Day". Keyboard player Dennis DeYoung sang lead on "Lady" and "The Grand Illusion".
Actually they have 3 amazing vocalist . The other guitarist James Young also does lead on some songs like Miss America from THe Grand Illusion and Half Penny-Two Penny from Paradise Theater.
Tommy Shaw is singing this song as well as Renegade! I have a guitar pick from Tommy Shaw. Was front and center on their Paradise Theatre tour! Outstanding band! Dennis is Absolutely one of the greats! His voice is one of the best! You should check out: Crystal Ball(Tommy)(One of my most favorite songs of All time!) also, Suite Madame Blue(Dennis)Lady, Fooling Yourself, The Best of Times and Blue Collar Man, to name a few..
If you could see them in concert, the level of audience involvement is unmatched by any band playing today. I think you can still see these guys playng smaller venues. There is a concert video that aired on PBS about 8 or 10 years ago. If you can find it, you'll see what I'm talking about. These former fans showed up with their children and their families to sing along with these guys. I absolutely love them. There will never be another STYX.
Such a great track and Tommy Shaw still sounds just as fantastic today... DDY, TS & JY create such a good mix of styles and sounds over the Styx catalogue. Great to see the old videos with the Panozzo brothers. RIP John. I remember seeing them in the late 90s for the Return to Paradise Tour and hearing them perform the in-memoriam song, "Dear John" live, was amazing and not a dry eye in the house.
Luv this band. The theatrics of Dennis DeYoung combined with the hard driving guitar of J Y Young. With the addition of Tommy Shaw it all came together.
Tommy Shaw wrote this song in a small bar called Mark's Bar (Now called The Tavern) right down the street from where I lived as a kid. Such a fun song.
I love Styx! One of my favorite groups. Tommy Shaw is such a talented composer and performer. Someone else mentioned another group he was in, Damn Yankees. Check out "High Enough" by them.
Dennis DeYoung is the Lead Singer of Styx. Tommy Shaw sang some lead vocals on songs such as this one. James Young "JY" also sings some lead vocals too, on songs like Suite Madam Blue and Miss America!! Two more songs you've got to do!! Also - please do Lorelei, Snowblind, and Castle Walls 🧱 🙏 too!! And you are still scratching the surface even after you do those songs!! Fantastic band!! 👊🎵❤️ @RobSquadReactions
Great reaction!! The lead singer for this song was Tommy Shaw (as stated in many comments). If you enjoy the sound of his voice as lead and hey Dennis DeYoung is also an awesome singer! Tommy Shaw sings lead for two more awesome songs, Blue Collar Man and Crystal Ball. Both are fire and worth a listen to!
Out of all the Styx songs you haven't done yet, my favorite is "Fooling Yourself." "Blue Collar Man", and "Lady" are also great as well.
3 of my faves!!

This is what the cool kids call a Tommy Shaw STYX song. The ballads.... Dennis DeYoung , the Rockers.... Tommy Shaw, that's how they did it.
Mr. Roboto was kind of a rocker
I truly hope they listen and react to Crystal Ball...another awesome with lead singer Tommy Shaw.
Generally correct, but there's always exceptions. And don't forget James Young's songs like Miss America and Midnight Ride. Consistently rockers.

Tommy shaw sings lead on this one. The level of talent that came out of the 70s and 80s is unreal.
They sound just as good on stage as studio. A great band. ☮💚🎶
"Don't let it end" is one of my favorite Styx ballads... 💞
@@allenosborne1201 👍Typo. Fat Fingers. 🤣fixed.
Another group that are great to see in person...Love them...
" The grand illusion" by STYX is an awesome song about how fame is really just a house of cards.
They are one of those band that have a unique sound like many groups back then you would hear it for the first time on the radio and know who it was.
Didn't I make out with you in the back of my Chevrolet?
Styx was my first convert and set a standard for all concerts that follow. It was the Kilroy Was Here Tour. High standard and top three all time fave bands for this girl. Tommy Shaw was a teenage heartthrob to me. That set another standard to me!
'The Best of Times' is a great ballad with just awesome vocals!
It’s so cheesy but so awesome.
I loved The Best of Times! It was a great song for cruising around town!!!
Styx is still
Performing. If you get a chance SEE THEM! They still rock!!!
I think you would both love "Lady", and J would certainly love "Suite Madame Blue". Tommy Shaw is on lead vocals on "Too much time on my hands".
Yes lady they need to listen to
So so many great songs from these guys! Yep 3 different singers.
Great band! My all time favorite by this group is 'Come Sail Away', also 'Babe', 'Blue Collar Man,' 'Lorelie' (which I think you've already heard, not sure" and many more.
Styx and the contemporary youth orchestra.
One of the best concerts ever.
Styx was one of my favorite bands. I loved the mister Roboto concert. The whole paradise theater album is great. It was also “holographic”. I still have the album from the early 80s. Pieces of 8 was another great album.
Ooh, I forgot the record was holographic!
I have that holographic album I keep it safe
@@scorpius6568 my cousin got it for his birthday. He showed it to me, and I was in awe! There’s no telling what he did with it, though.
Crazy.
Excellent and right on the$$$$$
I graduated in 1979, Caribou, Maine. "Come Sail Away" is our class song!!!
Little Suzie?
@@ScottKornfeld Yep, it is on their Greatest Hit Part 2. Tommy Shaw sings it.
@@CB-gr1uk That IS a good song and I was happy to find I could get it as an MP3 single since I already have most of the others. Thanks for the tip!
@@CB-gr1uk That IS a good song and I was happy to find I was able to get it as an mp3 single as I already have most of the others. Thanks for the tip!
@@ScottKornfeldYW! It is one of their best. I never heard it on the radio, not sure they ever put it out as a single but they should have. Enjoy!
I love this band!
I'll echo the requests for Styx's "Lady" - powerful ballad, amazing vocals...
I've been pushing for lady myself
The singer you asked about is Tommy Shaw. Love Styx, very versatile group.
Paradise Theater and Grand Illusion are my favorite Styx albums. Paradise is great beginning to end! FyI if you also want to hear some of James Young’s lead singing, then react to “Snowblind” from this album, and Miss America from Grand Illusion.
Snow blind by James a total must hear
My favourite Styx song finally. Great pick me up song, one of those that you gotta crank it up and sing loudly along with it.
Timeless song and this will always be a great video. They had a great sense of humor. And Tommy Shaw's first guitar solo is fire.
"Boat on the River". You are going to love it. And it's gonna be something unexpected. Sweet Madame Blue, Show me the Way are others
"Suite Madame Blue" is a must. Love to see you do all of the "Paradise Theater" album from 1981, but that doesn't seem to be your thing. What you're doing is great! Love it!
Tommy Shaw is singing in this song....and he still rocks it at concerts
That's Tommy Shaw singing. For the next one, try "Fooling Yourself" or "Boat on the River". In 'Boat on the River' video, I was pleasantly surprised to see them play an accordion and a mandolin. It sounds awesome.
"Boat On The River" is one of my favorites!
I saw Styx in 1978 & 1979, loved them so much that I took my son in 2009 & 2011. They were still SO GOOD!! What a show.
Good times!
Awesome!! what a great experience and memory to have...😎
I actually just saw Styx in NW Arkansas at the AMP. They still are amazing in concert. Amazing they are touring at 70 ish.
Boston, Bon Jovi, and Fleetwood Mac all get honorable mentions too
You want HILARIOUS? Watch the Paul Rudd - Jimmy Fallon version!!!

@@monkeysuncle2816 Oh! I have! It’s fantastic! They have it down. I could watch this repeatedly. Thanks for the link! 😂👍
Foreigner and Styx yeah!!!
Love to see you two rocking to Styx. Several other songs that I recommend, "Grand Illusion", "Suite Madam Blue", "Rockin' The Paradise", "Best of Times", and "Blue Collar Man".
Yes suite maddam blue please!!!!
Love Styx...went to several concerts and have most of there albums.....love playing them for my grandchildren. I think you would like "Don't Let it In"
I like Styx.. they were some of my favorites.. Tommy was an underrated singer "Boat on the River" Other songs by them I like: "Lights", "Why Me"
My first concert, 1982, was for Styx and this album. You never forget your first :)
@@robertgreen6433 Thanks! I didn't realize he sang those. The whole band is top notch!
I think it's great you I and several others are pushing for lady it's a must listen
Also Snowblind and Heavy Metal Poisoning, as I recall.
You're right on. Brought my son around 10 years ago to see them and again a couple years ago. They still are fantastic!
@@alkronlage5236 Awesome!! Loved your reply.
umm, yeah. Just saw them recently in a "small venue" of around 20,000. They were fantastic!
@@LifeLivedThruMusic No need to be "sarcastic", BJ.
@RobSquadReactions
I LOVE this , my favorite Styx song.
Love this show and you two are great hosts! Thank you for making this so much fun! Keep up the amazing show!
👍😃👍
Not all bands sound as good live as in the studio, but Styx always does!
More Styx! Awesome stuff! Keep the 80's reactions coming.
I rode around playing this on my 8-track player, blasting it! I love Styx❤
