Can you imagine growing up in a time where you turn on the radio and you basically hear. great songs all the Time with bands like Styx, Queen, scorpions and Boston and the list goes on and on. I’m old enough to have been able to listen to all of them and it was a really great time with really great music!

My son (age 21) wore his Styx shirt when he was deployed to the Middle East. He got a lot of comments that he was too young to know about Styx, but he said his mom raised him on Styx. I agree AgeofAquarius - we shared awesome music with our kids that we both can love and enjoy!

Yes, we saw the greatest music ever made: from 70s Rock, to 70s Country & 70s Funk to 80's Rock and then 90s Rap.
Rock died after Grunge Rap and Country have become produced Pop.

“Renegade” and “Blue Collar Man” are a must. I think Jordan would really like these, it’s the heavier side of Styx, but not heavy enough that Amber wouldn’t like it 😉

    If you see this comment...
Listen to the album version because there is a big piece missing from this video...
an amazing synthesizer/keyboard work that musically emulates the sounds of when, according to the story, he "climbed aboard the starship and headed for the skys". They played the entire song with the synthesizer solo when I saw them live in Chicago and it was amazing.
Styx is definitely one of my best concert memories.

Styx named after the river that separates the lands of the living from the lands of the dead in Greek mythology. They spell it the way spelled in the Myths. Dennis DeYoung is incredible on a keyboard and an amazing vocalist.

Try "Lady" - if Amber doesn't cry I will be surprised. The live one is okay, but please do the original studio, or 1995 re-recorded version. It is the most beautiful rock love song ever written and recorded. Lilting piano introduction that blows Come Sail Away "away" and then drops into the most harmonic thunderous chord riffs you can imagine. It just effin SOARS. Styx had a unique ability to make power chords angelic and doing it as part of a transition that made your jaw drop. No one else comes close.

For a Dennis DeYoung song that moved me, I have to go with his solo release, 'Desert Moon'. I don't know if it's the nostalgia or the kind of touching music video that accompanied it on MTV but it got me 'right there'(tm)

@@rhondamcbath6279 I guess a group that gets you through most of the traumatic moments of adolescence can inspire a certain amount of passion - LOL. Here is a tip. Styx became REALLY big after the album Equinox came out. Equinox is just sublime. In addition to Lady, it has songs reflecting my comments and is the pinnacle of Styx's melodic creativity and achievement, IMHO. You might like; Lorelei, Mother Dear, Lonely Child, and and Suite Madame Blue (an absolute Opus). Headphones, headphones headphones, and do Suite Madame Blue last, lying on a bed, in the dark - LOL. Go for the full 14 year old experience. I have goosebumps writing this...........

This song hits me hard everytime. My best friend died in a car crash at 27 years old. That transition doesn't make it any less emotional with those lyrics. That transition is the most emotional part.
Reflections in the waves spark my memory. Some happy, some sad. I think of childhood friends, and the dreams we had. We lived happily forever, or so the story goes, but somehow we missed out on the pot of gold. But we'll try best that we can to carry on.
A gathering of angels appeared above my head. They sang to me this song of hope, and this is what they said, they said
    "Come sail away"
I really have a hard time keeping it together through this song. It really hits hard. It's a beautiful song.

I love how Amber didn’t close her eyes or sway and Rob didn’t move his head for a full minute into the song,. You both just stared at the video wide eyed, could tell how the song was grabbing you from the start. The advantage to knowing the songs though is knowing exactly when the transition is coming and watching your faces for the reaction at that moment!

We didn't care if you could dance all the way through it because we danced like nobody was watching 🙂. The music was great (most of it, anyway) because the musicians cared about the stories and the songs. There's a lot of poetry in all those songs.

I was around when they started, I grew up about 50 miles south of them. They actually played at my high school shortly after recording their very first album, and "Lady" was their first hit. Shaw may be a good guitar player, and yes, he wrote and sang some of their songs, but the sound that sent them to the top of the charts was Dennis DeYoung, plain and simple. And for you fans of Dennis, he is still singing and recording (although with the feud going on between Shaw and DeYoung, it's not likely they will ever get back together as a group). Matter of fact, look up one of Dennis' newest, "Isle of Misanthrope" here on You Tube. ;) (if you do listen, listen carefully to the very last line of the song, and watch the images on the screen, it references this exact song, Come Sail Away. ;) )

"Styx" is the river from Greek Mythology that separates the newly dead from the afterlife. To cross the river you must ride the ferry piloted by Charon and pay him two coins. In ancient Greece bodies were buried with two coins holding the eyelids closed. If you were buried without the coins you were trapped on the wrong side of the river and would eventually go mad and jump in, but the river kept all the souls who entered its waters.

Saw Styx in 78. I got cig filters for ear plus (gun range trick) and still my ears were ringing 6PM the next day.
Rush without ear plugs came close. But the music was written for LOUD, that's where it all comes through "balanced".

You'll have to listen to the full album studio version of the song which is a bit longer. Dennis DeYoung (keyboardist/vocalist) takes you on a journey with the synths before the last verse is song, and that's where the guitars come out in full force.

Indeed, the angels were ETs. Styx was "Ancient Aliens" before "Ancient Aliens." You gotta hear the full version with the trippy bridge. It teases the Big Reveal and makes for a more dramatic buildup. I generally like live versions, but this one doesn't do the song justice, and reactors always end up with it, so it's probably on top of the search results. th-cam.com/video/eYCFrcCqh7Q/w-d-xo.html

Although Dennis DeYoung is no longer with Styx, he still performs on his own. Styx is still making albums today and just started a new tour. Next try "Heavy Metal Poisoning" or "Grand Illusion" These are songs where they rock. "Babe" and "Lady" are by Dennis and to his wife, both are top 10 hits in their day. These are slow songs.

Hopefully they'll listen to this song on their own outside the channel so they can hear it in its full version.

Dennis DeYoung’s voice is so underrated. The tone of it is truly amazing. David Byron with Uriah Heep is a another singer with incredible tone. Styx had a string of utterly perfect albums in my opinion. Their very early stuff is my favorite as it’s darker and heavier. Their songs Born For Adventure and Clair De Lune/Ballerina are as good as good can be.
