In 1978 I was the stage roadie for a Toronto based band called ZON (3 albums) and we had the opportunity to open their Toronto show at the annual Canadian National Exhibition (think of it as an annual county fair; on steroids). As we waited to get our stuff on stage, we got to hear their incredible soundcheck. Hearing them checking their vocal mics by singing a capella was like a dream. Then after our set (well received), I was backstage packing up our gear. My head was inside a road case and as I came up from that case, I made a quick u-turn to grab more cables and ran right into Tommy Shaw! AND he had his guitar with him! I nearly died on the spot, both by being so close to a guitar hero and nearly laying him flat out. Thankfully he was very gracious about it as I melted into a grovelling pile of apologies. Ahh, my brush with greatness.
Man, I never thought I would see Zon mentioned in a comment. One of my favourite bands back in the day. Saw them at the Oakville Centre and they were amazing!
I saw Styx a looong time ago! At the end of the show all the band members gave me guitar picks and Tommy Shaw gave me a monogrammed STYX towel. Have it framed and hanging on the wall!
My first car, a shi* brown Chevy Comet, 15 years old, and, literally, wore this tape out! It was a sad day. The Best of Times, Snowblind, Fooling Yourself, and Grand Illusion are some of my favorites.
Tommy Shaw said the song just kind of wrote itself. He was just singing anything that came to his mind and that’s what came from it. He said he’s never been in trouble with the law ever. Yes that sound you liked was a synth. Check out Mr Roboto, Too Much Time on my Hands, The Best of Times, Lady, Babe. Oh and Blue Collar Man. I see it as a tribute to the working man or woman. I don’t know why but this is the Pittsburgh Steelers theme song-3rd or 4th quarter-the big screens go black and every player&fan (plus every team that comes into our stadium) knows what’s coming. Everyone stands. The game stops. Players are looking at the screens. All you can see is gold “Terrible Towels” waving and on the screens the defense making amazing plays. It’s the coolest experience in the stands!!! No lie, I have seen the Steelers come back from being down and win the game after Renegade. It’s electric!!! Thanks so much for doing this💛🏈 Another one of their great ones-a ballad-The Best of Times

As a Mom... worst phone call of my life.. my oldest son.. in a fight with a Gay man that kept hitting on him.. my son was drunk and high at 19 yrs old and put the man in the hospital. He was looking at 20 yrs easy.. if not life for a hate crime.. I'm very blessed.. my son is now 36, has been sober and clean for 15 yrs.. has been married for 10 yrs, owns his home and works his ass off everyday. He made a major mistake.. but learned his lesson... especially after spending 9 plus months in jail.. thankfully not prison, but he never wanted to go back. He changed his life.
I certainly hope my son goes that way. He's 17 and got in trouble for stealing alcohol recently plus a few other things in the past. Hopefully he can see the light without having to go to jail , though that might be the shock he needs :/ Your and your son's story gives me hope
I don't have a favorite Styx song, love this song and then I listen to another Styx song then I love that one. Happy I got to see them live in maybe 2008, it was great.
I just saw them (again) last week, and despite them having been around for over 50 years, they still rock the house every time. One of greatest live band and still constantly touring. Renegade is one of my favourites live (with Criminal Mind by Gowan when in Canada).
BP, I'm about 10 yrs older than you, you're around my little brothers age. I can remember quite vividly the late 70's early 80's. This song and much of STYX being in heavy rotation on the radio around the year of your birth. They were the S*it I saw them in concert about 10 yrs ago at a local casino, although they may not be the complete OG croup they sure blew the roof off the building. The security could not even control the audience and keep them in their seats, everyone was rocking HARD. It's was a super great show!
I just noticed the song added that "gospel choir" style element. That always adds a really cool subset or something like that to a song. Two other songs I can think of off the top of my head are Foreigner "I want to Know what Love Is" and "Spirit in the Sky." So many great reviews of songs that are part of my life that I haven't heard forever. Thanks, BP.
Went to Paradise Theater concert & Styx performed this song. It was epic. “The Grand Illusion” was amazing to see live. It was like a theater performance. Nothing compared.
Still blows this song away in concert. As a man of faith I think you would be moved by Show Me The Way. Makes me tear up . . . When my husband was deployed and I couldn’t watch the news I heard the song on a classic rock station and it brought me some peace.
With Styx you have two singers who share lead. Tommy Shaw usually leads on the more rock type songs like Renegade whereas Dennis DeYoung led songs like Come Sail away tend to be more theatrical.
Tommy Shaw’s diversity is astounding. He also has quite a solo career as well as being with Damn Yankees. Check out Crystal Ball or Boat on the River to see something completely different from Renegade.
Styx have a ton bangers! Next up, you have to give these a listen, Blue Collar Man, Too Much Time on My Hands, Miss America and Queen of Spades. Keep up the good work!

Another great song is Blue Collar Man. The vocal range on display in this song will knock your socks off!
My mom is a megafan of Styx, and whenever this song came on the radio, she'd crank it and bang her head. I therefore learned it quite well, and now sing it myself. I have been told I do it well, but I try not to let it inflate my mind
This song and "Mr Roboto"🎉❤
Definitely would love to see BP's take on Mr. Roboto!
My favorite Styx song. This is my ringtone and has been for about 20 years now. LOl. I get a lot of laughs, especially from fellow GenXer's, when my phone goes off in public.
From the days of the "Head Bangers". My high school days.
