Another great upbeat, earlier song from Styx is BLUE COLLAR MAN!!!
Great song.
Agree Styx is so good they rock.
Glad you mentioned that! I was going to suggest that along with Miss America.
@@chriswildhaber35 saw them in 81!
My favorite of theirs
Suite Madam Blue and Miss America are two great and underequested Styx songs.
Absolutely,, along with “Crystal Ball” imo.
Miss America is a rocker...
For sure. Suite Madam Blue is my favorite song by Styx. Both are underappreciated.
@@ALD56 - Let's face it though the thing that drives Miss America is the absolutely epic guitar riff that is played almost throughout the entire song. It is a very catchy and powerful riff. I play guitar so I may be biased that this is what catches my attention.
@@futurewavecs ...also a guitar player, it is epic..do you recall the guitar player? Was it Tommy Shaw?.Maybe James Young?..this may have been pre Tommy Shaw...I don't know...I used to know...too much weed in the 70s...but, a great riff
Blue Collar Man; Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man); Come Sail Away. These should be your next Styx choices.
"Suite Madame Blue" , Lady , Miss America , "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)" , "Come Sail Away" , The Grand Illusion , "Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)" , "Snowblind"
all bangers!
yeah id like to see brad try to figure out Miss America with him not knowing its a pretty much true story
Concur... All Massive Must Do's Please!!!
So glad you did this and gave Styx another chance. Mr. Roboto was a bit of an outlier and didn't really represent them that well. It was a hit or miss song with many fans. Great reaction once again. Peace and love.
It was f***ing shit
love roboto
Mr Roboto was sooooo stupid.
Yeah, the Kilroy Was Here album (Mr. Roboto, etc.) was where they really jumped the shark. Dennis DeYoung got carried away with the theatrics and the rest of the band got fed up. The arrangements were tailored to the story he wanted to tell and no longer really sounded anything at all like Styx.
So glad you circled back to try their earlier material. Come Sail Away, Blue Collar Man, The Grand Illusion, Crystal Ball......there's so much GOOD Styx material out there. Just stay away from anything post-Paradise Theater.
I hate Mr. Roboto.
"Come Sail Away" should be everyones first Styx experience. it is their best by far and one of the greatest songs ever made.
Brad & Lex...I really hope you'll react to "Come Sail Away" but NOT I repeat NOT the "official video" which leaves out the crucial middle/instrumental section. Please react to the album version from "The Grand Illusion" album which actually was the original version released to radio and took STYX into the stratosphere.
AMAZING Song!!
@@Vaelsung1 Good call
Yeah but now I can only hear that song in Cartman’s voice…..
@@nettiemaclol, I was going to say thats the only version they should listen to.
Stix deserves a place in the rock and roll Hall of Fame. So many great songs from that band, and also one of the best performance live ever
Tommy Shaw - great vocals and lead guitar. He's still out there playing and singing too.
Styx has so many great songs. Check out “Crystal Ball”; “Lady”; “Lorelei”; “Miss America”; “The Grand Illusion”
As a child named Lorelei after that song, I cringe to this day when I hear it LOL Rest of Grand Illusion is great. My parents were very inspired by that album...I had a dog name Lady too LOL
Add in suite madam blue and man in the wilderness. Or even more old school- groves of eglantine and witch wolf
I'm really encouraged that somebody as beautiful, quirky and enthusiastic as Lex can love somebody as calm, rational, and analytical as Brad
Opposites attract
They seem to balance each other
Brad is one quarter Vulcan, son of Spock and Lt Uhura.
🤣😉👍
He is all about words and she seems to be all about sound- I respect both!
You guys need to listen to "Come Sail Away" That was the big breakthrough hit for Styx....AND it's a great song
And then watch the episode of South Park where Cartman sings it.
Yes! Brad will love digging into what its about! 👍
Nah gay Styx
@@overkill1025 I guess you are the expert on that topic
Lady was their breakaway hit.
As a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, this is one of my favorite songs. Its played in the 4th quarter of home games to fire up the team and the crowd. The scoreboard goes black and the crowd goes nuts!!
It was also played at a road game against the Chargers in Calif
It doesn't matter what you listen to first, as long as you listen to THEM ALL! They have a great variety in their music, in vocals as well - definitely worth a deeper dive.
"Blue Collar Man" would be another great one to check out.
Yeah, it's about pride and work ethic. Two things that are now lost and gone forever in the land of Suite Madame Blue.
When Tommy Shaw joined Styx, he brought a more refined rock and roll sound to the band. Great song writer, vocalist and Guitar master!
I get lit watching Brad & Lex. I am so happy that I found this channel. Take care everyone watching.
You as well
While I appreciate Dennis DeYoung's vocals, Tommy Shaw led Styx songs are the bomb.
DeYoung = ballads and silly songs
Shaw = ROCK
The difference can even be seen outside of Styx, where DeYoung moved on to an underwhelming solo career, while Shaw wound up in Damn Yankees with Jack Blades and Ted Nugent (we'll just forget Tommy's solo album here).
He definitely did.
Incorrect. When Tommy presented this song to the band it was an acoustic folk track. Dennis convinced the band to make it a rocker!
@@matthewcranney6576 I didn't know that! But I was actually referring to the tracks they did lead vocals for.
@@HeavyTopspin Yep! Tommy Shaw wasn't a fan of the slower songs but when they kept turning into big hits he couldn't say no. It caused tension and feuds and it sucks that the band mates had to go through it but they gave us a healthy catalog of great music.
This is why I love Brad and Lexi: they each have different areas of expertise in intelligence. Brad is the logical intelligence, taking the time to pick apart and analyze the lyrics and song structure. He seems to "get it" from that aspect, but you don't often see him nodding his head or swaying with the music. Lexi is the emotional intelligence, not so much thinking of the lyrics or structure but feeling and living in the actual music of the song, which is why she's always nodding, swaying, and practically dancing to the music, but not always getting the lyrics. It isn't that they don't cross lines at time, sometimes they switch places, but they predominately stay in those lanes, and both intelligences have value. Brings out the multi-layered aspects of the songs when you get each's perspectives.
Great song, great reaction, keep em coming!
Had this song as a 45 record when I was 10 years old. My entry into rock music.
My fav band in high school, late 70s. Glad you guys liked it.
If you liked this, check out Styx: "Come Sail Away."
Ugh!🤮
Now I have Cartman stuck in my head
Renegade has been my top favorite from this band since I first heard it in the 6th grade (waaaay back in 1978). Another one that Tommy Shaw sings on is "Too Much Time On My Hands" (my 2nd favorite song from Styx). I've always preferred his voice over Dennis DeYoung's... A few other favorites are - Don't Let It End, Show Me The Way, Babe, Best of Times, & Lady. I saw them in concert once & they end every show with this song. The place was dead quiet during the Acapella part, but as soon as the beat dropped, the entire stadium full of people were on their feet & dancing, singing along, clapping, & stomping their feet during the chanting to the heavy drum beats. It was so loud that you could barely hear the band - LOL!
Suite Madam Blue is a no brainer. I like the deep cuts from Pieces of Eight. “I’m OK”and “Queen of Spades” are excellent songs.
Great call! Two great deep cuts that must be heard, especially "Queen of Spades".
I like her. She has rock in her soul.
The Burg is in the house
Styx is still actively touring. Lawrence Gowan on keyboards and Todd Sucherman on drums. If you get the chance see them. Wow what show!
They play this song all the time at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh during the Steelers games
Usually played in the 4th quarter, and it energizes the entire crowd every time.
The crowd goes completely nuts. You have to be there to experience the energy.
This one was sang by the guitar player Tommy Shaw. Do Come Sail Away, Lady and The Grand Illusion.
This is the Styx nobody has heard of, the hatd hitting rocking band they realy are. This is due to the only songs people remember, Lady and Babe and Mr. Roboto. Try Grand Illusion and Blue Collar Man.
Nobody except everyone for forty years.
This used to be the Steelers' theme song.
Sad but true. Their 2 worst songs. Lady rocks. I’ll trade you Best of Times for Lady.
Love the Lex stank face in response to a sudden gnarly guitar riff! Love to see it!
Fun Fact for you Brad and Lex:
This song's lyrics are the contents of a letter written to the mother of a Wild West Outlaw shortly before he was sentenced to death by hanging
That's interesting. I didn't know that. Very nice
Tommy Shaw said he didn't know where he got the lyrics from. They just came to him...
Kind of like the idea behind Hallowed Be Thy Name from Iron Maiden?
Who ripped off who?
Two very uplifting Styx songs with positive messages that you both should love are Blue Collar Man and Fooling Yourself. Very motivating musically & lyrically.
Yes, for sure "Grand Illusion" (the song and album of same name are great to listen to), as well as "Come Sail Away", among others. Good luck in your future Styx tour.
Great Album!! 👍
This was the first song I heard by Styx- I was 8 yrs old and it made me an instant Styx fan!! All their songs are great💜
Indeed...it's their very best song!!
I love this song. It brings back memories. We played this over and over on the jukebox in Round Table Pizza after football games when I was in high school.
Thanks and great reaction. Styx is a band with multiple heads. It had three lead singers, two main song writers and their styles are so remarkably different. Dennis De Young is the keyboardist and admits he is more into Broadway and show tunes in his personal tastes and he wrote songs like 'Come Sail Away' 'Lady' 'Babe' and the more poppy style songs that made the top 40. Tommy Shaw is one of the guitarists and he wrote this song and sang it and is more into Rock. His songs are 'Renegade' 'Blue Collar Man' 'To Much Time on my Hands' 'Man in the Wilderness' 'Fooling Yourself/Angry Young Man' and James Young is the lead guitarist and he is the heavy rock/metal yet a joker and wrote and sung many of their songs too like 'Miss America' 'Snowblind' and more. Styx had some amazing songs and their style was incredibly eclectic because of the main song writers and singers being so very, very different. The wonderful part of the band were the two brothers. John and Chuck Panozzo who played Bass and Drums. Its why that part of the band is so solid on every song and style. Listen to 'Castle Walls' 'Suite Madam Blue' 'Lorelei' to hear some of the early songs they put out. Definitely worth a deeper dive into their music. They are also especially good live, even now 40 years after their heyday. The Band and Tommy Shaw in particular does alot of work with things like the Cleveland Children Orchestra and their music really works with symphony, check out those videos too. Thanks, Chris
Impressive knowledge of the bands history. I'm among the highest level diehard fan on Planet Earth. I talk with DDY childhood friend regularly. He was there in Roseland when Dennis wrote Lady and played it for him. Anyway you were correct in all of your comments. Mega talent in every way.
for those of us who know these songs almost by heart, its the anticipation of seeing the reaction to the parts that we know are coming...like his scream in the beginning before the music drops. kind of like someone sneaking up on you guys to dump ice water on you but in a good way, makes your videos fun to watch.
"Lorelei" is another hidden Styx gem.
Yep, from their Equinox album. It was the last album with John Corulski (sp?). Once Tommy Shaw joined up, their whole sound changed. BTW, Tommy joined 3 days before Styx started a tour. He had just those 3 days to learn all their songs!
The use of this song in the tv show SUPERNATURAL is one of the greatest needle drops of all time!
Now that’s the Styx you need to hear! Try “Fooling Yourself” and “Blue Collar Man”
Styx is still touring today 50 years and going strong.... Just saw them in Montgomery Alabama Feb 23 2022.... (Hometown of lead singer Tommy Shaw)
I am so happy you enjoyed this one. Great reaction to a great song! Other Styx songs worth a listen: Too Much Time on my Hands, Snow Blind, Blue Collar Man, Crystal Ball, Lady, Sailing. Journey songs: Lights, Anytime, Feeling That Way.
One night when I was a young teenager.96 Rock here in Atlanta . Played it at midnight.
IT BLEW ME AWAY . I've always loved that song.
Yes, it was a heartbeat. If you see them live, Tommy taps his heart along with the beat at the beginning. Tommy Shaw is a great songwriter. Look at suggestions below for an idea. Their earlier music is the best though. Brings back great memories. Thank you.
My first band covered this, and we named our band "Renegade" because of it.
Okay, two things:
First, I think this is the first time I've seen Brad hooked right from the start with anything other than Tom M., and it was good to see that.
Second, I wanna thank you two. Watching you react to these songs makes me realize how much I've taken a lot of them for granted, having grown up with them. This song is one that I loved when it first came out, but these days when I hear it on the radio, I could take it or leave it. Seeing you hear it for the first time reminds me that it really is a good song that I've underappreciated lately, and there are others as well.
I recently discovered this channel and have watched a lot of their videos. Maybe it's your name that stands out to me but I had to say that your comments are always so spot on that I have no idea how many of them I've given thumbs up to.
@@TheMartinChronicles Thank you for the compliment! 👍
Lady and Come Sail Away are two of my favs from Styx. I love Styx.
One of the primary reasons this song sounds so different from Mr. Roboto - different singer.
Styx has always had 3 different singers each with their own style.
The years through the 76-84 had: Dennis DeYoung (very artistic broadway show sounding melodic voice) who sang Mr. Roboto, James Young "JY" who has a raspy rock deep gravelly fry sounding bombastic voice, and then Tommy Shaw who sang Renegade - he has a high range very dramatic and awesome voice.
I love that Brad loved this one: Three other Tommy Shaw songs that I'm confident Brad would "invest" in is: Crystal Ball, Man in the Wilderness (my personal favorite Styx song), and Blue Collar Man.
Two fantastic songs by Dennis DeYoung is "Come Sail Away" (probably their most popular song), and Suite Madam Blue (a celebration about America)
And for full comparison for James Young listen to "Miss America" (a cynical view of the pagentry) and "Snow Blind" (about cocaine addiction).
Brad, you need to do a reaction to Styx's Babe, and look at Lex while it's playing. You will understand when you hear it.
This is good composition and great storytelling, tastefully done Styx. Love this tune.
"Come Sail Away" and "Miss America" are other great Styx rockers!
Brad & Lex, Much Love 💕 Y'all Make this 58 year Old woman Smile 😊 & happy Listening 🎧 to the Music of my teenage time. I Enjoy both your Energetic Connection Nature........ Keep doing You. PEACE 🕊️ LOVE LINDA
The Equinox album had the renegade character in a song called Midnight Ride. I think this is a cool song too. The Equinox had a lot of really good songs. Lorelei and Suite Madam Blue (with the prelude). They made a lot of good stuff.
Their best album, every song is great.
I think it was their best album also‼️💯🔥🎸👍
Tommy Shaw grew up just down the block from me in Montgomery Alabama.
He played local clubs often. Got to know him and his family. Great musician, and was a perfect fit with Styx.
Yes! Finally! Now just do their song “Lady” (yes many different artists have songs titled “Lady, and all hits as a matter of fact) anyway, Styx song “Lady” will 🤯 again! 🤘🏼💝✌️👍
Great, great reaction Brad & Lex!
Here's my Styx playlist:
🌟"The Best Of Times"
🌟"Babe"
🌟"Too Much Time On My Hands"
🌟"Come Sail Away"
🌟"Lady"
🎯 Styx had eight songs that hit the top 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100, as well as 16 top 40 singles.
Renegade is probably their biggest hit.
To top 40 for me. That one and Mr Roboto both
What about "come sail away" and Lady? To be sincere l can't stand mister Roboto.
STYX playing Denver Colorado early 2022 . Gonna be Amazing Show again 🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼
One of the greatest American rock bands right here
they only caught a bad rap was because most critics are cynical assholes
@@drewagoosa68 I would say everyone would agree with that 😂
@@chrishubble4611 Canadian, NOT American
So this song has been my ringtone for 6 years! When I got my new car I was test driving a Jeep Renegade, and literally 2 minutes in, the radio was on a classic rock station and this song started playing!!! I took it as a sign and got the car that day!
Styx has so much more . You really have to listen to "Come sail away" and "Grand Illusion", they are really rockers.
Always loved that guitar solo. I read once that style described as falling down the stairs and landing on your feet. Love it.
Styx was my first concert. My mom took me and a friend in '79. I was 13. I'm a life long fan. Their '77 The Grand Illusion album is my "all time" favorite album. All their pre '82 albums/songs are "it" for me. Unfortunately , Styx lost me and many other fans with the Kilroy Was Here album that contained Mr. Roboto. Tommy Shaw , singer of Renegade , quit the band shortly after.
It is a shame they lost so many people with Mr. Roboto. That song is a masterpiece. Incredibly well done with brilliant lyrics. Just different enough, however, that people who followed the band before probably found it so unfamiliar and different that they didn't like it. Which I get. Bummer.
This is a definite rabbit hole you need to go down. I went and seen them Everytime they came in concert. They've so many good songs a great albums to choose from. 🎸🎸🎸🔥🔥🔥
Styx were always at their best when they went heavy.
No.
Pretty cool watching Lexie rock out. I remember when I was young and this came out..always blasted the Stereo and the radio.
Maybe my comment is overrated, but that band is underrated.
Sweet Madam Blue, Lorelei, Midnight Ride, Born for Adventure... All great songs from the album Equinox. IMHO the best rocking Styx
LET'S GO STEELERS !!!!!
This song is the Steelers 4th quarter hype song . Heinz field goes insane when its played
always love Lexs reaction to the guitar.. And Brad so into
the lyrics
One of my favorite Styx songs is half penny two penny. It wasn't one that got radio play so you had to have the album Paradise Theatre . Styx really has just too many songs to list. Great band for a deep dive !!!
I used to skate to this one at the skating rink back in the 80s. Styx has such a diverse catalog they’re a fun group. I’m trying to get tickets to their show coming up in my town next month.
I'll echo others is suggesting that if you want a taste of Styx's harder side and their unique sound - go with "Blue Collar Man." I had not heard the song in years, and when I heard it again, I did not remember it being that damn good.
Tommy Shaw and Dennis D Young...
Classic voices and guitars, it's Styx Baby!
I like to pretend Mr. Robots doesn't exist. 🤣 I'm a huge fan of Tommy Shaw and his voice. He is a great writer too. Most Styx songs I love were his and he sang lead on honestly.
Styx has had 4 lead singers, 3 lead guitarists, and 2 drummers, so their music is never the same from album to album. The amazing thing is 3 singers and 2 guitarists are always in the group, so LOTS of lead talent available for any song.
You definitely need to react to "Come Sail Away". You won't regret it
The first time I heard this song was when I was around 15 on a trip to Mexico. My dad found an iPod nano and gave it to me. I charged it, and eventually got to this song. I was blown away because I had started to learn to play guitar earlier that year!
"Pieces of Eight" is many peoples favorite Styx album of all time, either that or "The Grand Illusion". It's a very close call for me.
Equinox for me
@@Dr.Atomic Equinox and Crystal Ball are awesome too in my opinion.
First concert I went to was for the Pieces of Eight album.
In Junior High, I was in a class with a girl that was obsessed with Styx. Her daddy would fly her and her mom all over the country to see them perform and I don't ever remember seeing her in anything but a Styx concert T-shirt. I hope she grew out of that phase. lol Great reaction!
This song is played at the beginning of the 4th quarter at every Pitsburgh Steeler game. It is supposed to stimulate the Defense to rise up and smite the opponent.
The entire crowd of Steeler fans goes berserk. Great Song! Go Steelers
Such a pleasure seeing your reaction to this. When Brad said, "I'm invested in the story." And Lex said, "Let's see what happens." I thought "uh-oh," knowing that they never revealed the ending.
Our high school marching band drum line used this song as a marching cadence for parades. That's when the band stops playing and we just march. So they'd just be doing a beat and then they'd break out into that part where the song goes wild. It was pretty cool because the song was on the radio back in those days.
This is true styx...Mr Roboto was Dennis DeYoung crap later in the 80s ...Excellent ballad from them is Crystal Ball!
Styx rocks. Mr Roboto needs to be forgotten. These guys put out a bunch of albums in the 70s, all had some great songs, checkout -
"Prelude 12/Suite Madame Blue"
..actually anything from the 'Equinox' or 'Grand Illusion' albums.
roboto has the most likes of any styx video on youtube. real styx fans can enjoy their many different styles boat on the river is their most watched video variety the spice of life
Loved Styx except for that horrible Mr. Roboto song and album. Mr. Roboto is the song you listened too before and I was like of all the good songs Styx has why oh why did they choose this one. LOL.
This is basically a rework of a Zeppelin song called Gallows Pole. It's a little different but the same idea. The Zeppelin song has a twist at the end. But I like both songs equally as well.
Tommy Shaw. Awesome singer. great guitarist.

Show Me The Way is a very inspirational song. They played it alot on the radio around here during 9/11. It's a beautiful song.
Always loved that song. You cats posted three great songs today. Thank you!
So glad you came back for more Styx, I would recommend Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man); Come Sail Away and Too Much Time On My Hands all awesome epic classic rock songs from the band. Thanks! You two are awesome I really enjoy your videos!
Suite Madame Blue, Snowblind, Blue Collar Man, Styx has so many great songs. They have been one of my favorite bands since I first heard them in the seventies.
Pittsburgh Steelers' fans know this as the team's entrance song to every game. One of the best Styx songs IMHO is Castle Walls, it gives you the fantasy feeling of exploring a new and exciting world. Love your reactions B&L.
Suite Madame Blue, Crystal Ball, Queen of Spades, Blue Collar Man, Fooling Yoursel, The Grand Illusion, Miss America, Snowblind, Hal-penny, Two-penny. There are so many great songs by this band. With three lead singer-songwriters in the band to mix things up, boredom had no home.
Renegade holds a special place in my heart as a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, IYKYK!!!!
They had some great hits. And they were very good live. Awesome reaction.
Come sail away is amazing as well. Love Styx
One of my favorite guitar solos. Just the way he crashes in at the beginning. Epic.
Play this song in Pittsburgh and everyone will start chanting "LET GO STEELERS."
Everytime I hear this masterpiece...i think of yet another masterpiece.......SUPERNATURAL 😌🎧🤘
