+David Peck Don't worry, the CTS is a huge sedan. We've still got a Corvette with the same engine, more meat (tire), and 600lbs less weight to come. As demonstrated at Lightning Lap, the Z06 laid waste.
+David Peck Have you heard of the ACR yet? Just wait. The only Porsche that will match the ACR is the 850K battery powered smug mobile. Plus, the TA has done the deed in 1:33.6. Almost 4 seconds quicker.
Damn you can tell randy loves this car by the look in his eyes and his smile when he gets out of the car. Haven't seen that in any of the cars tested so far!
It is really a proud day when we start to take back our original and rightful place as automotive leaders. Cadillac is helping that cause by making two of the best in their classes. The ATS-V and the CTS-V........amazing!
I really like how Cadi boss realized that they only had the MT and sent an AT. Even though it's not JUST a track time thing, but still tells us how Cadi's boss cares about the results! Must be one of the reasons their doin great now'a days. I'm watching Cadi, I got my eye on you. ATS-V, CTS-V? Hmm. ;-)
Why is there so much bias against American cars? If a car is luxurious, or fast, why can't that be recognized no matter the manufacturer? I'm not saying American cars are the best or not, but if any car is the best at something, I accept that regardless of brand or nationality. This is coming from an American, so you can call me biased if you want, but I have no problems agreeing European or Japanese cars are good or the best in a given area. So I don't see why it's so hard for other people to do the opposite.
+Marcus Coster it's funny when you watch car reviews from a German or British review youtube channel they love American cars and even in the comments section there's nothing but positive comments coming from British and German.
+Marcus Coster Well mostly its either national pride, or just old paradigms. In the 80's most American cars had pretty terrible handling, along with bad interiors and sketchy reliability. GM/Ford and even Chrysler have gone a long way to improve that in recent years, but people are stubborn and slow to forget.
Post-recession American cars are worlds apart in terms of reliability and performance from where they were before. It'll still take people a while to admit it though...
+Garrett Martin Yup, I hate the idea of these new twin-clutch paddle manuals. The whole idea of a sports car is to feel connected to the car, and all a paddle shifter does is send an impulse to the car's computer to change a gear. I could forgive the paddles a little bit more if there wasn't stick option, but there is! Why would Cadillac even bother?
My American dream cars for 2016: Cadillac ATS-V; Cadillac CTS-V; Chevrolet Corvette Z06; Ford GT; and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8. America, my beloved country, keep up the good work. We're finally making some bad-ass fast automobiles once again and it feels good.
What's truly amazing is that the Manual!!! version was faster than the C63s which cost almost $20,000 more! Cadillac hasn't just "step their game up"; they've started competing in a whole new division.
an ugly design, the interior and the resell value are still in favour of the c63. So some people here prefer a v8 (pretty sure only because of the name) I think race performance is not something I am looking for in a road car. But it offers good performance for its value
Every automobile on the road today was designed by a designer who used to be in school, I think your friend's opinion proves only one thing. Considering the fact that the majority of the vehicles on the road are considered undesirable by most but we're obviously soul to someone, and designed by designers who were at one point in time in school... most designers opinions count for nothing. And I can guarantee you one thing, your friend would much rather have an ugly design on the road then no design at all!
I'm amazed with Cadillac and their V series of cars luxury performance the Handling mixed with the level of refinement. Honestly being a former BMW owner, these are the ultimate driving machines, I wouldn't me surprized if one of the Cadillac's win this contest! personally I'm going for the AMG GT
For anyone looking into buying one of these I recommend it. I just traded in my C6 Z06 for one and I am very happy. I made the switch about a month ago. I did the down pipe and tune on it and I think I am pretty close to 500 whp, the car is super zippy. I do miss the instant power my LS7 made but the turbos are just as fun in their own way.
The great thing is that he managed to make an almost identical lap in such a difficult track with either transmissions. That a hit about his driving value. Congrats at Randy!
+Chrstian “Driver” mrclep Yes...especially as autonomous cars become the norm. The few manuals left will be coveted and sought after. The lag on this hints at the presence of large turbo's so hopefully the ATS-V responds well to light mods...the sedan (w/manual) would be an awesome used DD in a few years.
If you're going up in a straight line against a hellcat I'd go with a ctsv all day .. But track ready and road fun atsv... Actually my second car it's on it's way next month!
He is almost giddy when he tells of his ATS experience. He works hard in his CTS experience. I'd like to see results of 10 or 20 laps. CTS beating up rubber faster because of it's weight. It was already a handful taxing te driver. I may have to look into track day insurance.
+jeremihraiden LFA & NSX are better then any Caddy eh? Then answer this question why did shitty lexus stop production on the LFA? When the LFA went out of production; Cadillac was still making and selling vehicles. Where has the NSX been? When gay honda/acrua stop the NSX production Cadillac was still selling and making vehicles. I'm just showing you at least cadillac can show up with there sport cars unlike the lexus lfa and acura nsx. So who is really better?
+WolverineNerd what? You made 0 fuqing sense just now, Lexus IS a big player in the luxury department, & both the LFA & the first gen NSX were legendary in the automotive world, when they were both introduced they showed the world, and Honda last I check sells a whole lot more cars than Cadillac does, shit Cadillac isn't even the top luxury manufacturer in the last 10 years it's been either Merc or BMW, now that caddy has made good cars in the last 10 years, you forgot the FWD 4 speed badge engineering vehicles made from the 80s to the 2000s? What a fangirl
The braking issue is purely with brake fluid. A simple upgrade to DOT4 brake fluid (I use Castrol SRF) will make the brakes on this V work as you'd expect.
The calm articulate narration that Angus provides makes the watching all the more enjoyable. Also, 2 thumbs up for Randy's analysis of handling at the limit. The experience of those two adds up to more than the sum of its parts.
Marco Diaz I’ve had one for 3.5 years and 28k miles. It’s been tuned with downpipes and intake for over half those miles. Makes 525HP 530 TQ at the wheels and has been flawless. Phenomenal summer semi daily driver or vacation trip car. I came from a C7 corvette immediately before it, C6 vette prior, 335 BMW, and a few others. This is my favorite car I’ve owned at 32 and I still plan on keeping it awhile.
I currently have a 2015 ats 3.6 with premium performance pkg. Soon to upgrade to the V! I know the V is a huge step up but my sedan with 3.6 n/a and performance pkg is no slouch for what it is! And she sure is a looker! Black on black with oem 19s!
Very impressive laptime, and I'm thrilled to see they brought along the manual version! That's becoming more and more rare these days! ...I wouldn't be surprised to see this ATS-V land in the top three this year... Not sure it can take 1st place, that Cayman GT4 is looking pretty damn good also!
One is a luxury coupe, the other is a muscle car. Nobody will mistake a Camaro as a luxury vehicle. Maybe a buyer looking at the ATS-V will cross-shop the Corvette, but the not a Camaro.
Trades46 as a driver's car they both share the same chassis and you have to admit the NA V8 is the better deal than the turbo v6 especially when it's cheaper by 5 figures
If you're only looking at the performance aspect I sure agree. However the ATS even in base form is a pretty nice car to be in and the V only adds M3/C63 beating performance on top of that. The Camaro...err, not so much. Waistline is too high for good visibility, exterior a bit boy-racer and attracts a bad crowd (read street racers) & gets unwanted police attention. The ATS-V is none of this; it would fit right well into a corporate parking lot as it does to a fancy dinner party with the missus. ATS-V aren't exactly selling like hotcakes either; Cadillac has currently some incredible deals & rates on the ATS-V, making the difference in price smaller than it looks. For daily use, I much prefer a V6 turbo than a V8; gas may be cheap now but don't count on it.
If you have $70k to spend, there doesn't seem to be a better car than this. It is almost shameful that the Cayman isn't much faster. Cadillac clearly did their homework this time around!
0:19 rear half of the car looks weird to me. proportions don't seem right. I think it either needs a bigger wheel or the rear after the door needs to be smaller
+GMdrivingMOPARguy I'd rather the engagement, joy, and skill improvement of a manual. That's why I don't even really consider the "automatic only" cars like the RC-F.
+GMdrivingMOPARguy The auto slushbox will detonate like a hand grenade after continuous abuse at the track. Good for a few laps but not for a whole race. There is a reason race cars DO NOT use a slush box.
It's crazy that manuals are disappearing because someone wants to shave off half a second on their 0-60, laptime, or tracktime. Also, considering that Cadillac is synonomus with luxury and being the best of the best, I find it weird why people are surprised by a performance Cadillac. It's a "Cadillac" it should be able to smoke some tires! :)
In Australia 2019 we are getting a German V6 front wheel drive sedan to replace the Commodore V8 and V6 range. What a shame Holden and GM didn't replace the Commodore with the Cadillac. What a loss.
Whether you like the Cad or not, at least it's good that they are at least in the conversation now when talking about the world's best! Now someone explain to me why Lincoln can't put the mustang gt500 engine in an Mkz or whatever softie they're pushing nowadays!
Only if they changed the rear-lights shale, makes it look so old (front could be widened too) :x, other than that, really nice looking car with good performance.
What an intelligent reply, Zrn. It is great to see them being better than the manual equivalent. It shows how far we've come to make a transmission operated by a computer shift faster than a human. It is, actually, very impressive.
i think its not an achievement that a computer controlled system can shift faster than humans. And you wont need that fast shifting for a road legal car
rantanamo actually the tech cant see if you are about to drive down a hill or if you want to accelerate/ use engine to break... if you cant select the right gear than you shouldnt be driving.
anyone willing to donate me one of those manual ATS-V to germany? would be very thankfull :D i just like the interior of all the american cars much more than of any german brand...
I'm not buying the "3/10 of a second slower to 60". Maybe if you shift slow, but that laptime shows the manual being half a second slower overall. I'd say realistically it's probably 1/10 of a second slower like most manuals, unless the auto has launch control. Even then the manual has the no-lift shift launch control, so it shouldn't be that much slower.
+A Luck #12 At the end of the day and automatic is a SLUSHBOX and not to be confused with the Dual-Clutch Auto which is a totally different beast. Sure you can program a slushbox to shift better and faster. However every slushbox's enemy is heat and after several laps the auto fluids will be to hot and the auto will loose feel and speed. The manual does not suffer from this. So while lap 1 through 5 might be faster if the race is 25 laps you might be in trouble.
+Bill Panop modern autos are not SLUSHBOXES. This is no different than the argument about a modern V6 not doing the job, yet that V6 keeps walking away from C63 S at every test. Its not 1985.
rantanamo All conventional automatic transmissions that have a torque converter are slushboxes. They use fluid that sloshes inside the converter. Do not confuse a DCT with a conventional automatic transmission. They are totally different beasts. GM refuses to use modern-day DCT transmissions or multivalve engines. They are still stuck in the 50's.
The reason the brake pedal had some extreme depth is because someone didn't "Burnish" the brakes in before hitting the track. Gotta do is about 25x to get them just right before racing.
The ATS-V auto has more power and a faster 0-60 than the M4,but it did the lap only 0.04 seconds quicker than the M4 that Motortrend tested in last years best drivers cars. I don't see what all the hype on the ATS-V is about, BMW is still the king.
He has a liking to the ATS, well, if he says its fun, it would be good fun, still a little heavy for my taste but its luxury sport so thats okay, it has its chances, but, my moneys not on it.
Will you guys stop with the ADD cuts you make. You can't watch Randy go through a corner. Every time he enters you cut to the outside wheel and then the full view etc. In car camera with Randy is fine--unlike you apparently most of us don't get bored every two seconds and we would like to see how the car reacts to steering inputs etc.
+Audiwan Kenobi He's always quiet during the hot lap, its just sometimes they dub his voice from other laps over, at least back before they started showing the dedicated hot lap by itself. I think this may have been in part because people were saying "how can he possibly have done a good lap if he was jabbering on like that?".
funny how America car manufacturers forcing down automatic transmission down consumers throats. manual is not about going 3 tenth of the sec faster its about being more engaged while driving. driving is boring as it is. stop it Chevy, Dodge, and ford. keep your automatics.
+gaivoron While I haven't driven a lot of American cars, I think the new automatics in German cars don't ruin the fun for me. I've test-driven over 30 cars soooo yeah... Speak for yourself lol
+derbigpr500 I think he means old granny cars with terrible automatic shifting profiles which would shift at 4k Rpm tops lol. I remember those days where manual was technically faster, but not because Automatic was slower per se, but because mfr/technology wasnt available to aid in smarter profiling. But that was the 90's-2k.
Abhiram Godavari Yeah but that's expected for a truck, I don't know about nowdays, probably a bit more extended/more gears for fuel efficiency, but 5k RPM for a Diesel Powerstroke sounds about right hah.
Vernon Price Look up the weight of the z28 v the ATS-V. Figured you do that prior to commenting the contrary actually. I looked it up before I posted it. -_-
Vernon Price Ok let me come clean and say I misinterpreted your OR. I thought you said the camaro was LIGHTER. I'm going by 2015 specs with my OC. A year isn't very long and changing platforms in that short of time means we need to buy the pig camaros asap. They're gonna be special if they do away with the old chassis and make the z28 that much lighter. Also I'm assuming you're saying NOW that I know what you're really saying that the NEW z28 will be around 3400lbs? That really is something if that's what you're saying.
nezerac Oh right. I just meant that the next gen Camaros will be appropriately lighter. Yeah GM has confirmed at least that the 2016 Camaro SS will be 400 lb lighter than the current one. They didn't mention the Z/28. It will also do 4 seconds flat 0-60 and pull .97Gs completely stock. That's what this new platform is doing for the Camaro. So if they do a new Z/28, it should pull relatively better numbers compared to the current Z/28.
My ATS 2.0T 6-speed also has it. You can keep your right foot flat to the floor on the throttle in between shifts and the ECM will cut the throttle but maintain boost pressure in between gear changes.
1. Mercedes AMG GT S - 1:35.57
2. Porsche Cayman GT4 - 1:37.43
3. Cadillac CTS-V - 1:38.52

As demonstrated at Lightning Lap, the Z06 laid waste.

Have you heard of the ACR yet? Just wait. The only Porsche that will match the ACR is the 850K battery powered smug mobile. Plus, the TA has done the deed in 1:33.6. Almost 4 seconds quicker.
I guess I should have clarified I was saying in comparison to the cars Motortrend is using for this lineup.
+anotherone10 GM #1 overall, these Cadillacs are killing it
Damn you can tell randy loves this car by the look in his eyes and his smile when he gets out of the car. Haven't seen that in any of the cars tested so far!

+plateofshrimp My 2005 CTS-V would like to have a word with you. Though I guess you said "mostly."
the manual ats-v sounds so much better going thru the gears.
+Garrett Martin Not bad for a V6.
+Garrett Martin Yup, I hate the idea of these new twin-clutch paddle manuals. i'd totally rock an ATS-V
I would feel the same thing too
I'm hoping that the ATS V does well in the ranking. This is my favorite car so far
I think its time for Cadillac to build their own sport/super car instead of making their luxury cars fast.
They need to redo the XLR. I loved that car. It was killer 10 years ago. Based off the CIEN concept I believe.
Ian Thompson Ths Sixteen and the Cien are cars that really prove what Caddilac can do, they would be so cool to see as production cars.
But the M/T gonna hold the price best throughout the years...
+Chrstian “Driver” mrclep Yes...especially as autonomous cars become the norm. The few manuals left will be coveted and sought after.

I'll be curious to see where Cadillac places on this years Best Drivers car. I'm impressed so far with both cars.
I wonder if Randy prefers the ATS or the CTS. I'd be really curious to hear his thoughts of the two in comparison
I was just pondering the same thing. I'm trying to find out which one he likes better so I could get that one cuz I need one! Lol
+MaxwellReviresco I think he likes the ATS more, it's lighter, he prefers the manual gearbox and it's more balanced than the CTS-V

Should’ve never quit on this car, Caddy. Should’ve kept evolving it.
That grey is sick and menacing 😎
Really banging those gears Randy! Love it.
Despite the result not quite being what I hoped, I am very glad MT lapped both the Manual and Auto.
0:19 rear half of the car looks weird to me. proportions don't seem right. I think it either needs a bigger wheel or the rear after the door needs to be smaller
YES! Thank you for reviewing the MT version :)
Very solid video. Thank you
I cant wait to see this one on the road
...and the dealerships.
Randy.. I don't know if you read this.. my friend Jeff was your teammate at tripoint..
Sounds fantastic
Gotta love randy pobst
What's the name of the song in the beginning? It's all over Motor Trend, but no-one seems to know it's name!
Times are changing folks....times are indeed changing.
I'd rather have the automatic, especially in the turbo car. Manual is fine for a daily driver but for a track car I'd much rather have an automatic.
+GMdrivingMOPARguy SO AGREE
Bullshit
+GMdrivingMOPARguy I'd rather the engagement, joy, and skill improvement of a manual. That's why I don't even really consider the "automatic only" cars like the RC-F.

The auto slushbox will detonate like a hand grenade after continuous abuse at the track. Good for a few laps but not for a whole race. There is a reason race cars DO NOT use a slush box.
+Bill Panop Formula 1 disproved that long ago. Not like manuals don't fail all the time during races.
Craziest thing about this: This car is really, really fast, anything sub 1:40 around MRLS is quick, and the CTS-V is 1 second faster. That's absurd.

In Australia 2019 we are getting a German V6 front wheel drive sedan to replace the Commodore V8 and V6 range. What a shame Holden and GM didn't replace the Commodore with the Cadillac. What a loss.
so why didn't he say which transmission he preferred the most or did I miss it?
+Audiwan Kenobi This that even a question? The manual no doubt
Whether you like the Cad or not, at least it's good that they are at least in the conversation now when talking about the world's best! Now someone explain to me why Lincoln can't put the mustang gt500 engine in an Mkz or whatever softie they're pushing nowadays!
God I need one of these in my life
Only if they changed the rear-lights shale, makes it look so old (front could be widened too) :x, other than that, really nice looking car with good performance.
this car looks horrible
Holy crap, the manual ats was only 2 seconds slower than the cts v, and the auto was only 1 second, that's crazy!
Whats the song that starts at 7 seconds?
yes
I wonder how much MT equipped ATS-V Cadillac sells. I doubt it is many; but being the Internet someone is bound to complain about it.
Anyone know why they don't give the ATS-V the same engine as the CTS-V?
+Patrick Church Probably doesn't fit, and they don't want to embarrass their competition too badly.
This an other of my best,
so any V-badges will give similar performance....
and damn, it is good to see that an auto faster than a manual even in a hand of a racer
I dont get it why you think this is good. just to justify that you drive an automatic?
What an intelligent reply, Zrn. It is great to see them being better than the manual equivalent. It shows how far we've come to make a transmission operated by a computer shift faster than a human. It is, actually, very impressive.
i think its not an achievement that a computer controlled system can shift faster than humans. And you wont need that fast shifting for a road legal car
+Tankred Zrn but the tech will select better gearing for daily driving. Nothing wrong with that.
rantanamo actually the tech cant see if you are about to drive down a hill or if you want to accelerate/ use engine to break... if you cant select the right gear than you shouldnt be driving.
anyone willing to donate me one of those manual ATS-V to germany? would be very thankfull :D i just like the interior of all the american cars much more than of any german brand...
Between an auto and a manual, I'll take a manual. I like to be involved in my drive. So, Randy...ATS-V or CTS-V?
Song name?
Mercedes won already, these videos aren't as cool when the CEO of mercedes spoils it
Thank you for ruining it for the people that didn't know that.
God damnit.
+jake smith I hardly call it "ruined" ...it was pretty clear which car Randy liked the most.
Could you imagine if this was a v8, forget about stats and times. Wouldnt it be fucking awesome?! There are so many good gm v8s too, what a shame.
***** But they're not that much faster unless they're a DCT, which the Caddy does not have.
rantanamo All conventional automatic transmissions that have a torque converter are slushboxes. They use fluid that sloshes inside the converter. Do not confuse a DCT with a conventional automatic transmission. They are totally different beasts. GM refuses to use modern-day DCT transmissions or multivalve engines. They are still stuck in the 50's.
***** I'm not saying they aren't quicker, I'm saying they are but that they aren't THAT much quicker, like 0.1 to 0.2 seconds tops.
The reason the brake pedal had some extreme depth is because someone didn't "Burnish" the brakes in before hitting the track. Gotta do is about 25x to get them just right before racing.
1:39.80 BMW M4 coupé
The real question is how fast will the 8-ton Presidential Cadillac limo go around Laguna
The 2016 GNX
I want the manual, period.
Ugghhhhh where's the cts-v review? And why is it that the automatics are becoming faster??????
engine kill is he talking about the no lift shift feature
Why on earth are they using a go pro session?
Minor gripe, but this car would look a lot better with HID's than those halogens…..
The best drivers car this year is the Mercedes amg gts.. Just read the motor trend magazine article..
The ATS-V auto has more power and a faster 0-60 than the M4,but it did the lap only 0.04 seconds quicker than the M4 that Motortrend tested in last years best drivers cars. I don't see what all the hype on the ATS-V is about, BMW is still the king.
Ali Gowhari dont forget that bmw is underrated. It could be that the M4 has more power.
Wouldn't care if the automatic was 5 minutes faster I'd NEVER buy it. Manual is the only way to go 👍
He has a liking to the ATS, well, if he says its fun, it would be good fun, still a little heavy for my taste but its luxury sport so thats okay, it has its chances, but, my moneys not on it.
Where is the GT350?
Will you guys stop with the ADD cuts you make. You can't watch Randy go through a corner. Every time he enters you cut to the outside wheel and then the full view etc. In car camera with Randy is fine--unlike you apparently most of us don't get bored every two seconds and we would like to see how the car reacts to steering inputs etc.
"sedan version vanquished bmw m3 in a recent test" what? where is this video?
+myplaylissst look up this channel for ats-v vs c63 video a couple of weeks back
+bogdan135 they even didn't start up bmw. that's a shame
how can a 2016 car compete for 2015 car of the year?
Good drivers car but, the styling⬇️
A to the T to the S...
... to the M to the 3.
Nik Brudar k
he was also unusually quiet during the lap...why?
+Audiwan Kenobi He's always quiet during the hot lap, its just sometimes they dub his voice from other laps over, at least back before they started showing the dedicated hot lap by itself. I think this may have been in part because people were saying "how can he possibly have done a good lap if he was jabbering on like that?".
He wasn't quite during the vw lap....think back to all the other laps he's made in other cars.
I respect Cadillac for becoming so much better through out the years. But why do they have to make the cars so goddamn ugly?
funny how America car manufacturers forcing down automatic transmission down consumers throats. manual is not about going 3 tenth of the sec faster its about being more engaged while driving. driving is boring as it is. stop it Chevy, Dodge, and ford. keep your automatics.
But Mercedes stopped production of manuals... BMW is probably soon to follow. Lmao!
+gaivoron While I haven't driven a lot of American cars, I think the new automatics in German cars don't ruin the fun for me. I've test-driven over 30 cars soooo yeah... Speak for yourself lol
+arms manga LMAO right have fun with your slush box
+gaivoron they want sell cars man, they sell more autos
+gaivoron have fun repairing your AT..
Hi, what's up? You've Got It. scattered questionable
the ats v did it faster then the c63? HAH
i don't know... i just don't like the look of modern cadillacs
And it's usually the automatic that's slower
+Abhiram Godavari That hasn't been the case in...about the last 20 years.
I know a friend of mine whos dad had a power stoke diesel ford truck with like a 4 speed auto and could only do 5000 rpm tops (figures for a 2001)
Abhiram Godavari
Yeah but that's expected for a truck, I don't know about nowdays, probably a bit more extended/more gears for fuel efficiency, but 5k RPM for a Diesel Powerstroke sounds about right hah.
and i saw a vid where a guy tested a manual camry (not the old one) against the auto camry, and guess who won. the manual.
i am so early
Leave it to GM to have a cadillac that's lighter than the camaro Z28 that's already had 300lbs taken out of it. lol
+nezerac The 2016 Camaro is on the same platform as the ATS-V, and it loses 400 lbs.
Vernon Price
Look up the weight of the z28 v the ATS-V. Figured you do that prior to commenting the contrary actually. I looked it up before I posted it. -_-
nezerac What does that have to do with the 2016 Camaro being on a new lighter platform?
Vernon Price
Ok let me come clean and say I misinterpreted your OR.
NOOB QUESTION ALERT!!!!
What is this "flat shift"?
My ATS 2.0T 6-speed also has it. You can keep your right foot flat to the floor on the throttle in between shifts and the ECM will cut the throttle but maintain boost pressure in between gear changes.
oh cool, a chevy malibu
+Verbose Slayer You're not very bright.
Vernon Price oh, I'm sorry, I mean an Opel Insignia, my mistake.
+Verbose Slayer Opel Insignia is a Buick Regal u dumb fuck
Hellloo Trollls my mistake I meant a Daewoo Lacetti
Verbose Slayer lol u goof, get out
.
