1:38.52 puts the CTS-V almost two tenths faster around Laguna Seca than the 2014 Audi R8 V10 Plus, and only a half second slower than the F12 Berlinetta. That's insanity.
God damn, now that's really saying something, to outrun a purpose-built all wheel drive supercar.... Cadillac has not come "a long way"...they have warped into a different dimension. I mean that's truly mind boggling that an American four door 2-ton sedan, is able to lick a German super aerodynamic $200,000 super car with a Lamborghini v10 in it..... 95 grand very well spent!
+0slavsan0 Mercedes cars are never known for putting down their power despite all the claims about great engines. Even their supercars are slower than fast 4 door sedans and sports cars so I'm not surprised the SLS doesn't do that well for its price.
I sure did. That's probably the track record for a production sedan. Have to check on RS7. This track isn't even the best suited to stretch the legs on this car. Would be curious about Nurburgring times.
nah bro, the best sleeper would be a 4 door Rover metro with a twincharged v6, this ain't even close to sleeper it's too bmw-ish so the cautious would be weary of it
That car is just too intimidating to drive at that kind of speed... Raw Power, I mean no wonder the people who can afford these things drive five miles under the speed limit... Real talk!!
Best drivers car? Oh sure, because there are SO MANY people who will be able to afford to drive this... A drivers car, by definition, should be attainable. You guys need to update the rules. Also, putting a professional driver behind the wheel and lapping SECA, has nothing to do with everyday drivers and owners.
+andred I think what he meant was, pro drivers are better than normal drivers, if you want to figure out which car is better, get a normal driver and have him trash the cars around the track. So we can see what a normal person can do with a car like that. And with that I don't mean any of the shows presenters, they drive way to many cars to be considered normal driver.
+Ryan DeClue You are comparing the cars abilities or their price tags? If you want the crème de la crème of driving experience, you'll have to pay the price for it otherwise a Nissan versa would win the Best driver's car
+Ryan DeClue MT has been pretty fair in allowing for a fudge factor regarding price ("which would you buy if money was a huge object"), which should by no means distract from best driver's car (aren't rich people allowed driver's cars too?). Not to mention those rare occasions when a moderately priced car embarrasses the competition. It takes more than money to win. And regardless it's going to be subjective anyway, so having an experienced driver give their impressions is probably going to lead you closer to your own preferred driver's car.
In one of the older issues of Motor Trend, when they announced the Best DRIVER'S Car, (which I think was the Porsche 911 or the Z28) they specifically said that they were not doing the most affordable car, or best bang for buck car. They were on a mission to find the best DRIVER'S car, which obviously is not supposed to take into account the price tag. Yes, most people can't afford most of these cars, but its nice to know what the best DRIVER'S car in the world is. Who cares about price.
Steven Ferguson Umm the 911 Carrera 4s is a full on sports car, This is a full/midsize Luxury Sedan almost as quick as the $300k F12 Berlinetta. Yes the power to weight ratio adds up here 650 hp on a 4100lbs+ car is not as a good power to weight ratio as a 400+ hp on a 3200lbs car especially when it comes to taking corners! Remember this is not a fast track, it's a hard braking sharp cornering track that really tests a cars cornering ability which Cadillac showed better car handling/cornering ability engineering than Porsche even with it's weight Dis-advantage. ALSO* the E63s and M5 are no where near at the level of performance of this new CTS-V when it comes to track capabilities, Motor Trend said this countless times. Also with this sudden Internet age where people think Porsche makes the best and fastest sports cars in the world (which is only partial true, since they have yet to prove they are faster around a track than corvettes and vipers or any cars that are in that class) you would think their $120k sports car would be quicker than a Luxury sedan at most" ---->>Let that sink in.
Steven Ferguson have you been paying attention to these idiots that keep commenting things like "Porsche makes superior cars" or the stupid slogan "Porsche: there is no substitute"
+Fabián Portilla The new Viper ACR, Shelby GT350r and Mclaren 650s all should have been there. They probably just wouldn't give MT a car for what ever reasons.
"Not a corvette yet." It never will be. Cadillac's are still known for there luxurious interior, and there beautiful ride. Don't get me wrong, driving them on the track CAN be done. But how many people buy this car and take it out on the track?
Curtis Reid You are right, but it isn't going to be a corvette. I have gone to track meets and have never seen them there. Mainly just Porsche and Miatas...
+zzzhuh "The CTS-V will never be a Corvette, or a space ship, or a beautiful woman..." I just picked up a CTS Vsport (not an actual "V") for my daily driver. Even my car posted a faster lap than a 2006 Corvette, a 2010 Camaro SS, a 2011 Merc-Benz E63 AMG, and a 2011 Mustang GT on the Car and Driver lightning lap (and it's not even a real "V"). Pretty impressive considering that Camaro had more horsepower and a V8 engine. I mean, obviously the CTS-V is not as fast as the same year Z06 due to brand management, but it will outrun a lot of cars (including some Corvettes) and be super fun. So not only CAN it be taken to a track, but it's an excellent idea!
Wow. 20/30/40 years ago, who would've thought that an American sedan would be capable of doing anything remotely close to this, let alone a freaking Cadillac. Well done!
+TOWexpert1 But the thing is, GM went downhill 30 years ago, and their transformation in the past few years was so quick, many people still think Cadillacs are boats with wheels and whatever way a BMW drives is a good drivers car. In reality, BMW and Cadillac basically switched places now; BMWs are piles of garbage, and Cadillac makes good driving cars.
+TOWexpert1 Ever heard of domestic sedans in the 70s and 80s that had V-8s that produced like no horsepower (thanks to emissions standards), had ultra squishy suspensions, and were heavy as tanks? That's why I said 20/30/40 years ago. Yes, stuff like the Olds Rocket was awesome back in its day. By the late 70s, the 88 was nothing like its former self. I should know. I grew up with a 1981 '88. Had like a 100 hp V-8. Big trunk tho!
James Stevens Hater right there. Clearly a keyboard expert. BMWs and Mercedes cars look the same now. They can't even come up with anything original. They keep getting uglier and uglier.
+Lolman240 Laguna Seca Speedway (aka "Mazda Speedway"): The corner descent you are talking about is called the "Cork Screw," and is a world renowned corner, and primary feature that makes this one of the worlds greatest speedways.
+Lolman240 that fucking corner is harder than any corner in the world. hell, the nurburgring's corners are easier to manage and i still can't even get the hang of this corner. always too fast
Well that time is faster than the BMW m4 from last year the Alfa Romeo 4c and the Jaguar f-type. All on the same track same driver at motor trends 2014 best drivers car hot laps. Very well done Cts-v, a 2 ton 4 door sedan just trounced 3 purpose-built sports cars. And done with an automatic transmission and steel breaks; the BMW has carbon ceramics and a dual clutch.
Took good care of my baby... At least my favourite one :) Just as a side note, the improvements to the interior/instruments and the materials used have been huge since the Series 1. Once again Caddy, take my money... Oh, you already have it? See you next year then. Cheers.
first Mercedes SLS, second Porsche gt4, third Cadillac ats-v, 4th Cadillac CTS V, 5th Mercedes c63 s, 6th Volkswagen Golf, seventh Mazda Miata, 8th Bentley GT 3 R, 9 Lexus RCF, Corvette ZO 6 incomplete. That's how I see it thus far. and the cts-v is my favorite. That's the one that would win my money all day long, like the ATS but I'm not a coupe guy.
I wonder if Pobst would approve if they increased the foot pressure in the pedal for more confidence? Also: faster than a BMW M4, E63 AMG S Wagon, Jaguar F-type S, 911 Carrera 4S, and an Audi R8 V-10+. WOW!
Even if this doesn't win this, based on what the other mags have said, this car has destroyed its competition on the track while not having the fit and finish issues the ATS had vs its competitors. Even BMW loving Motorweek is saying best in class.
This car deserves carbon ceramic brakes and 335 section tires from the Corvette Z06. With those simple upgrades it would handily beat the Camaro Z/28 around Laguna Seca.
I wish you would have stuck with audio more consistent with what the camera angle was. Or even just stuck with one sound position all together. We get it, car is fast, can sound good... etc. But how about a lap or atleast some turns from inside the car without cuts to external raw noise.
+ApexIXMR Right on! When i saw the price tag of an CTS i was blown away. How could anyone not see price - quality differences ? I mean the same money for an rs 5 , rs 4 , Amg , bmw m cars... i mean add 20 grand and you get a fckn rs6 man... wtf is going on ?
i think caddy made a big mistake in jacking the CTS-V 20k MSRP over the previous CTS-V. American cars are suppose to be bargain performance, it is much less of a bargain now. Thats like jacking up the mustang to be 15k away from a BMW M
why does the sound cut off so much when he's off the gas? I hope Cadillac doesn't have some gimmicky sound canceling technology and it or pipes the engine noise into the car. Please explain this to me someone. Thanks
Cadence braking into the Corkscrew? The CTS-V Brembo package is an option I'm willing to bet they don't account for the extra fluid flow and use a standard master cylinder. That would account for the initial pedal travel, heat dissipation issue and lack of feedback. Also there's no manual option for the CTS-V so it loses out there, engine braking would help get the rear to rotate into corners better. She looked a little understeerish.
Thanks for that. They were optional in the UK when I was looking into one a couple of years ago. If they're standard now it could be a bias valve issue or something that needs addressing.
+PaulieLDP Who said a certain body style can't win a competition. The cars in this competition were chosen because they were the best new cars to drive. Remember the year they had a Mercedes wagon?
you have to consider the economy as well. if the economy and the price of things these days we're not as crazy as they are you wouldn't see these big jumps in prices. for the money they are asking for this car compared to it's competition I am hoping it wins the Best Drivers Car award
The audio doesn't sound quite right to me. All I hear is rushing air on power, and nothing otherwise. Where is the mic? In the air intake? Put it in the cabin or at the back so we get some nice noises to listen to
Where do you guys put your microphone for the engine noise during the lap? It just sounds like wooshing air turning on and off... Yet, when the mic switches to Randy making a comment, the engine sounds quite good, so I don't understand the editor's choice to have wooshing instead of actual engine noise.
+xboxgamer959 The CTS-V is better. Besides the engine, the CTS-V has a slightly even better interior, its got the latest CUE system which is faster and better organized than the one in the ATS-V, it also has a more special looking gauge cluster than the ATS-V. The ATS-V is expected to be getting similar improvements in its next model year.
+xboxgamer959 They're designed to essentially do two different things. Cadillac calls them the scalpel and the sledgehammer. They're using BMW's model for that, the M3 is the better track car, the M5 is more powerful and the better GT car. Same with the ATS-V and the CTS-V, except the Cadillacs were designed to be better and faster than the BMWs.
What a great DRIVERS car. A gigantic, 4100lbs automatic sedan with a billion electronic nannies. Yup just what I think of when someone says "drivers car".
1:38.52 puts the CTS-V almost two tenths faster around Laguna Seca than the 2014 Audi R8 V10 Plus, and only a half second slower than the F12 Berlinetta. That's insanity.
+Russ Walker Some people just can't live with the idea of an american LS-powered car kicking asses that easy.
+Russ Walker yeah but i'd take either one of those cars over the cadillac. f12 is my dream car
next gen m5 would be a real m ... the current m5 is actually kind of 7series and ghost
+bercholr It's actually a new LT motor...
AMG, M, and Hellcat KILLER !!!
word.
+Curtis Reid lol no you see the track times
Audi RS
Just to let you know CTS-V did 11.9 in the 1/4 mile and the E63 did 11.6. This is motortrends test. So it seems it can't quite kill the AMG...
+Joe Pinder cuz the amg has awd, but in a half mile or rolling start the cts-v would murder the amg
1. Mercedes AMG GT S - 1:35.57
2. Porsche Cayman GT4 - 1:37.43
3. Cadillac CTS-V - 1:38.52
4. Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (Z07 Package - Engine problems, down on power) - 1:38.60
5. Cadillac ATS-V (Automatic) - 1:39.65
6. Cadillac ATS-V (Manual) - 1:40.18
7. Mercedes-AMG C63 S - 1:40.50
8. Lexus RC F - 1:43.20
9. Bentley Continental GT3-R - 1:43.51
10. Volkswagen Golf R - 1:46.95
11. Mazda MX-5 Miata - 1:50.68
Do ANY of you not notice this CTS V just ran a ridiculously fast lap time???? Holy Shit
They're to busy getting ah load dropped in their mouth from the germans.
+Jonathan Alerte it's just 48 miliseconds slower than the Berlinetta! It's faster than the R8 V10 plus and SLS AMG.
+0slavsan0 Mercedes cars are never known for putting down their power despite all the claims about great engines. Even their supercars are slower than fast 4 door sedans and sports cars so I'm not surprised the SLS doesn't do that well for its price.
iSOBigD right... and this video proves it as well
I sure did. That's probably the track record for a production sedan. Have to check on RS7. This track isn't even the best suited to stretch the legs on this car.
Would be curious about Nurburgring times.
This car makes the m5 irrelevant..... CTS V > all
Any man that heads towards a corner at 140mph... then tells the car... 'Down Boy.. sit'.... has my vote.
🤣😁
NOW THAT'S QUICK!! never thought i'd love Cadillac.....holy crap i do!
People let this register on you real quick. The newest luxury supersedan from Cadillac is destroying SUPERCARS at a race track.
ik right lol its amazing
An underrated era of cars we will miss these ridiculous, loud high powered cars one day soon with all the hybrid and electric cars on the way
yeas we will amen
Yes! My favorite week of the year has just started.
Still more eco than a VW TDI...
looool
Lol
+Namie Newell So is this:

Welcome to America...
Steven Ferguson why Audi? What have they done? Except for making cars that understeer lol
Steven Ferguson I know they're dirdctly linked to one another, but I didn't know that Audi has done this fraud as well..
oh yaaaaa!!! it's about that time buoy!!! been waiting a whole year for this. Let the cars compete!!!!!
This is the best sleeper ever !
+michael vickers It looks fast, so not really.

Daaamn that first drift was CRAZZYYYY!!
That car is just too intimidating to drive at that kind of speed... Raw Power, I mean no wonder the people who can afford these things drive five miles under the speed limit... Real talk!!
The CTS-V and the E63 Wagon are my real dream cars... both are great in their respective categories
Awe yeah! Hot lap videos are on queue!
BEASTLY...love it. I want one. That's a sports sedan built for pushing on the track. That Caddy be flying.
I would love to see Keiichi Tshuchiya do the Hot Laps!
Best drivers car? Oh sure, because there are SO MANY people who will be able to afford to drive this...
A drivers car, by definition, should be attainable. You guys need to update the rules.

MT has been pretty fair in allowing for a fudge factor regarding price ("which would you buy if money was a huge object"), which should by no means distract from best driver's car (aren't rich people allowed driver's cars too?).
HAHAHHAHA THE CTV is faster than a 911 Carrera 4s LMAO
+Jonathan Alerte is it? it better be with 250 more hp anyways
+James Stevens its heavier too... so?

Man i miss the ACR!!!
Or at least the TA 2.0! This year the Z06 has no contenders!
+Fabián Portilla Are you sure that the new Viper ACR wasn't here??
This year contenders are:
CTS-V, ATS-V, Z06, Cayman GT4, Miata, AMG-GTS, C63 S, RC-F, Golf, Bentley GT3-R.
:(
+Fabián Portilla The new Viper ACR, Shelby GT350r and Mclaren 650s all should have been there. They probably just wouldn't give MT a car for what ever reasons.
Yeah, still, i found weird that from Dodge, especially when they have powered RoadKill.
+V8Supercar1 GT350R still isnt in production means yet, it's prolly going to be part of 2016
"Not a corvette yet."
It never will be. Cadillac's are still known for there luxurious interior, and there beautiful ride. Don't get me wrong, driving them on the track CAN be done. But how many people buy this car and take it out on the track?
You would be surprised at how many people take Cadillac V series to the track. The V series is not a regular caddy.
Curtis Reid

J'adore ce mec ! en plus on comprend bien son anglais ! :)
thanksssss
Well that time is faster than the BMW m4 from last year the Alfa Romeo 4c and the Jaguar f-type. All on the same track same driver at motor trends 2014 best drivers car hot laps.

This thing is absolutely sick. A dream car for daily driver.
It may not win best driver's car but I think this car is beautiful
What does everyone think will be the car that will win Best Drivers Car? my money is on the GT4
WARNING! Don't read the comments!....Urgent, spoiler-posting kiddos.....
I would've said that the Miata would win.
But the kids spoiled it in the comments.
+Craig J GT4 first, Miata 2nd, and the Z06 most likely getting 3rd.
+Craig J AMG GT S wins :) bahahaha had to, sorry
JMaherWRX You are cancer to the community...
I can't wait for this series
who else wants to see the 2016 Viper ACR go around this track
Randy Pobst is the best.......such a nice guy. It would be awesome to get a performance driving lesson from him.
640hp? wow! for a Sedan!
How about the Charger SRT Hellcat with 707 HP.
Rat Face meh im 800hp
+Rat Face How about the Tesla P90D with 762hp
Domino E Wait, I thought there was only a P85D with 690 HP?
+Rat Face P90D just came out about 2-3 weeks ago. Quicker that P85D.
See, Cadillac-unlike BMW M5-has a RWD mode. It's called "all the time"
Took good care of my baby... At least my favourite one :)
Just as a side note, the improvements to the interior/instruments and the materials used have been huge since the Series 1.
Once again Caddy, take my money... Oh, you already have it? See you next year then.
Cheers.
This year, this is my fevered,Cadillac CTS-V.
come on guys you upload the cts-v hot lap before you do the full review !! this vehicle deserve more from you
best sedan out right now! !
Respect to Randy for driving the hot lap with a GoPro in the middle of his field of vision.
Cadillac is the greatest!
What a great way to kick off the hot laps!
Love these car's.
the two Cadillacs the vett and the viperacr the 2 mustang gts and the z28 world class cars in all things including handling
this is pretty much my new dream car.. DAMN that thing looks and IS freakn' BAD fucking ASS!!
Oh man I love this car it's such a bad ass
what a good looking car, like it, sounds ferocious too
Motor Trend never did a video review of this. We got the ATS-V but not the CTS-V. I was kinda waiting for it.
first Mercedes SLS, second Porsche gt4, third Cadillac ats-v, 4th Cadillac CTS V, 5th Mercedes c63 s, 6th Volkswagen Golf, seventh Mazda Miata, 8th Bentley GT 3 R, 9 Lexus RCF, Corvette ZO 6 incomplete. That's how I see it thus far. and the cts-v is my favorite. That's the one that would win my money all day long, like the ATS but I'm not a coupe guy.
when are you guys going to do a head to head with the f type r and the benz gts that's a hella good head to head
I wonder if Pobst would approve if they increased the foot pressure in the pedal for more confidence? Also: faster than a BMW M4, E63 AMG S Wagon, Jaguar F-type S, 911 Carrera 4S, and an Audi R8 V-10+. WOW!
wow that cadillac look great! picasso would have loved it
got to take a ride in one of these bad boys. holy crap this thing is bad ass.
One of my favorite drivers besides Sir Peter Brock RIP.
@ 0:46 seconds, That critter crossing the track has some balls to be doing that.
When are we going to see the CTS-V against the hellcat and / or audi rs7???? killer drag races. I would pay to see that one!!!!
Is motortrend going too keep a tally of previous lap times in the videos or are we going too have to do it in the comments like last year?
Damn, 1:38 is fantastic.
Cool corkscrew exit, Randy!
I love this car!
Yeah me to I never new I'd be saying this about a caddy
squirrel running for dear life @46 seconds.....
This car is amazing!
Randy is the man.
This car is amazing I wish people could see that and stop being so focused on just BMW Mercedes and Audi. Let's enjoy what all car companies give us.
As great as that time is I think the brakes were trashed probably had another second to gain overall.
Caddy have certainly made good improvements to this cars looks
i love you motor trend
1:38.4. Not bad for a 4-door luxury sedan with a Corvette ZO6 engine.
Even if this doesn't win this, based on what the other mags have said, this car has destroyed its competition on the track while not having the fit and finish issues the ATS had vs its competitors. Even BMW loving Motorweek is saying best in class.
Horsepower gets all attention but its the Torque that wins for true power junkies!
Motor Trend you know this is not fair
This car deserves carbon ceramic brakes and 335 section tires from the Corvette Z06. With those simple upgrades it would handily beat the Camaro Z/28 around Laguna Seca.
If Caddy makes an AWD version, and improve that dash, it will be the king.
best time of the year inc
I wish you would have stuck with audio more consistent with what the camera angle was. Or even just stuck with one sound position all together. We get it, car is fast, can sound good... etc. But how about a lap or atleast some turns from inside the car without cuts to external raw noise.
Nearly $100k for this and the C63!? Wtf are these manufacturers smoking?
Good shit apparently because people buy these things ... Smh
+ApexIXMR yea its a joke that they jacked up the MSRP on this 20k over the previous CTS-V
+ForTehNguyen Well if you sit in both you will be surprised it's not more than 20k more. This car is better in every way by a lot
The sound guy really dropped the ball on this one
wonderful machine , thump up :)
The Laguna Seca track brings back memories from the original Forza Motorsport!
This car is nutz!
What a good looking car.
This car is so fcuking underrated
Damn, I actually like the sound.
why does the sound cut off so much when he's off the gas? I hope Cadillac doesn't have some gimmicky sound canceling technology and it or pipes the engine noise into the car. Please explain this to me someone. Thanks
Can you guys please explain why they keep advertising "wet sump lubrication" as if it were ideal to have, is not dry sump better?
Cadence braking into the Corkscrew? The CTS-V Brembo package is an option I'm willing to bet they don't account for the extra fluid flow and use a standard master cylinder. That would account for the initial pedal travel, heat dissipation issue and lack of feedback.
Also there's no manual option for the CTS-V so it loses out there, engine braking would help get the rear to rotate into corners better. She looked a little understeerish.
+TheLiquidKnight the brembo brakes are standard, you have the option to paint the calipers red or gold
Thanks for that. They were optional in the UK when I was looking into one a couple of years ago. If they're standard now it could be a bias valve issue or something that needs addressing.
+TheLiquidKnight The Brembos have never been optional on any CTS-V model. Always standard equipment.
One of the best 4 door cars IMO. Don't like the exhaust note though.
so is this the video for the day?
Nice car, though we all know a big sedan can't/shouldn't win a driver's car test.
Says the guy who has a holden commodore in his picture.
+Hing holo Hahaha
+PaulieLDP Who said a certain body style can't win a competition. The cars in this competition were chosen because they were the best new cars to drive. Remember the year they had a Mercedes wagon?
so very quiet off throttle. amazing car
Shame they dropped the Manual gearbox option. Randy Pabst Blue Ribbon is fun to watch though.
you have to consider the economy as well. if the economy and the price of things these days we're not as crazy as they are you wouldn't see these big jumps in prices. for the money they are asking for this car compared to it's competition I am hoping it wins the Best Drivers Car award
Yet, when the mic switches to Randy making a comment, the engine sounds quite good, so I don't understand the editor's choice to have wooshing instead of actual engine noise.
crazy how fast it is with those tires. Put a little wider fronts and rears with pilot sport cup 2s and you are gonna be close to gt350r territory.
so which one is better, the CTS-V or the ATS-V?
although personally I prefer the new ATS-V's looks
+xboxgamer959 The CTS-V is better. Besides the engine, the CTS-V has a slightly even better interior, its got the latest CUE system which is faster and better organized than the one in the ATS-V, it also has a more special looking gauge cluster than the ATS-V. The ATS-V is expected to be getting similar improvements in its next model year.
+xboxgamer959 cts v, looks and probly performs like it is less on a budget
+xboxgamer959 They're designed to essentially do two different things. Cadillac calls them the scalpel and the sledgehammer. They're using BMW's model for that, the M3 is the better track car, the M5 is more powerful and the better GT car. Same with the ATS-V and the CTS-V, except the Cadillacs were designed to be better and faster than the BMWs.
What a great DRIVERS car. A gigantic, 4100lbs automatic sedan with a billion electronic nannies. Yup just what I think of when someone says "drivers car".
Except he set the time with all the nannies off.
Now what's your excuse?
Damn this cts-v moves nice GM
