Yeah I actually looked it up, and she was SEVEN years old when Bulls on Parade was released. So she probably didn't have much control over what she could listen to at that age. And by the time she was old enough to actually control her musical choices, that song was mostly off the radio. And also if her personal tastes just never leaned towards RATM, then yeah, it's entirely feasible that she's never heard it.
Best part of the drums for me is the physicality of them and she embodies that so hard here. Right in the pocket and leaning into that snare drum hard. Just great to listen to.
Sydney, Australia here. I can believe that she had not heard the song. I hadn't. Maybe 2 years ago I found myself obsessed with a song that had previously eluded my radar, Killing in the Name... its the only RATM song I know but on watching this, there was absolutely no doubt in my mind that they were the artists, so no I can't believe that she had no idea who was performing it. I also have no reason to think that she's not being honest, I actually like that she doesn't know anything(at all) about RATM coz now I'm not the biggest freak in the room. For the sound alone their music is to me like electricity is to a light bulb. Thank you for the continual invitations to enter into the discussion, a very refreshing style.
Hi Northern neighbour from Melbourne! I grew up with RATM & all that went with it. I love drumeo for giving all these people an avenue to show off their chops
I believe her. We had more exposure to different styles and bands back in the day through tv and radio. Nowadays, people can streamline their specific tastes in music
She did a completely different interpretation of "Bulls on Parade", but that's what a good drummer should do: make it your own. That being said, I loved her version. Obviously, the original is phenomenal, but I loved her vision of what it could be. The way she ran through the quiet parts by bringing it down and also her Tom/Floor Tom fills were great! And the fact that she was beating those drums like they owed her money was crazy. I think that they are absolutely correct in that it was a completely honest take and she nailed it FIRST TIME ON ONE LISTEN!!! I'm def gonna look her up to see what else she's done as I'm not familiar with her.
This whole series is a test in interpretation, it's why they do it. To compare drummers minds, not their precision out of the blue. Not sure why so many say 'missed that part' it doesn't make sense to me. She's never heard the song before so it will be blind interpretation, no matter what. Anyway, I just know if someone has never heard the original song, no one would be able to tell that isn't the original drumming for it. That is a sign of a great drummer. Not how close she was to the song she's never heard.
@@bettyrose959 like I said, I loved her version. But I will point out that I NEVER liked the song “Mr Brightside” until Dirk Verbeuren did his version. Don’t like the original, but love his version. I just wish I could’ve heard what good ending would have been 😤
@@rcomaduran Yep, I just mean I like to see where drummers will take it when given the opportunity to do so. I guess it's just hard for others to listen to a song in a new light. Would like to see them do this same thing with the other instruments in the band. Not sure if there's a channel doing so, I've never actually searched to find out. Been working audio for a very long time and had watched bands through many member changes over the years. So it's easy for me to forget the original and hear what they have to offer. She says she overcomplicated things, but I still say she didn't. Just being herself. I tip my hat to that, specially when it all works. These video's never disappoint. Hasn't been a bad drummer in the bunch. She kicked the crap out of the song, a very impressive on first take. Good stuff, and another drummer I'll pay attention too more often.
She’s so beautiful damn. She’s a really really good drummer. The Summer Set took time off but their new album in 2022 was excellent. Her drums on it were fantastic. In my opinion she crushed this track, well done!
She's awesome. The song suits her style of drumming. She toured with Lights who is a Canadian pop musician and Jess raised the vibrancy and energy of the band.
6:11 - Did you notice why the groove changed here? It was because her kick started following the bass line. That was the only guide she had on that part of the drumless track, so she followed it. 🙂
She did AMAZING!!! Of course, I’m always especially impressed by drummers and their damned multitasking and coordination!!! I couldn’t do it! So glad there are people who can and they kick ass so we can all listen to it. 🤘🏼
I totally believe her. I´m a 100% Hardrock/Metal guy. I play guitar and bass since 30+ years and grew up with Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Accept, Van Halen ...... And nowadays I listen and play stuff like Rammstein, Slipknot or modern stuff like Spiritbox, I Prevail, Chaoseum, Daedric, ....! But I never been a RATM fan/listener. And I swear the only RATM song I knew until the day today was (like we all do) "Killing in the name"! Believe it or not, it´s simply not THAT kind of Rock/Metal I listen to. So yes, I thrust her, I didn´t know the song either, no matter how many million views that original RATM video has. And I find her version is better than the original. But that´s just me; hearing that song for the first time here.
When Drumeo first started doing these - "drummer hears song for first time", they left the drum tracks in. So you had artists from different genres doing their take/interpretation of songs....but AFTER hearing the drums. The newer format, where they hear the track with NO drums is so much better and more interesting, because it gives them the freedom to interpret the music on their own and to infuse and enhance the song with their own "special sauce". And in many cases, they kill it. And she certainly did. Sometimes it's amazing how similar their take is and sometimes it's a totally different take. But it's always interesting and always leaves me respecting the original drummer and the one hearing the song for the first time. I hope they keep doing these.
Not quite. There's two different "games" they do. One is this and the other is the drummer learning the drum part of a song, which is impossible to do without hearing the drums.
wow what a hard hitter.. She nailed it for real. enjoyed it from the very start.. Super clean. if I never heard the original . . I would still like it and felt that it fit well.. though the pause in the original always makes the difference..
She did amazing especially considering she had never heard it before, it was her first attempt, AND she didn’t take any notes! If I were to grade her performance, I’d give her as high as 95%
California boy here. Grew up on RATM. Awesome take by her! Rage transcended sound. Was is funk, rap, rock. ... YES! Crappy thing is thier messgae is still relevant. And yes I do believe her. My kids generation always asks... who is that?
Her band the summer set is actually decently big in their genre, and 3oh3 had massive radio hits, alice glass is pretty legit too. So shes played in some very successful projects
I am a complete and willing simp for women rock climbers and drummers. when you were like “she hits hard” I was like “yeah look at her fuckn arms dude”
Love the thumbnail brother....great "facial look of amazement".. she crushed it. WATCHING from Idaho Falls Idaho. Love Rage. Song pounds. Hard to believe she'd never heard it. The Bass line makes this song imo a little easier to work around.
The only RATM song I've heard is Killing In The Name, so I believe Jess when she says this is unfamiliar to her. I have zero coordination so me on a drum kit sounds like it's being pushed off a cliff, but I'm very impressed with her version of the song.
Here is the deal here...there isn't a "right" or "wrong," as this is interpretive and it is the drummer's take based on listening; it's not supposed to be a cover of the original track.
The bass was calling for an half time on the ride. Especially on the guitar solo. While being a drummer i love, she remained deaf to the bass on this one.
She did really good and didn't even take notes!! I'm impressed!
This guy has the blandest reactions, and no real substance in his commentary.
Nah, I'm super impressed she did as well as she did for a first attempt and not knowing the song or band. My hats off to her for sure.
Yeah I actually looked it up, and she was SEVEN years old when Bulls on Parade was released. So she probably didn't have much control over what she could listen to at that age. Just the pure joy on her face as she gave both the kit the song hell! ACE!

She murdered it! I’m obsessed with this drummer
I think she killed it
Solid drumming

Jess is such a good drummer. She impresses me everyday.
she was a pleasure to watch and listen.
glad she gets reactions already
Watching her makes me wanna play the drums! Hi from Portugal.
she was awesome...one of my favorite drummers
For never hearing the song and doing one take she did an amazing job!
I am definitely impressed.
I totally believe her. I´m a 100% Hardrock/Metal guy. I play guitar and bass since 30+ years and grew up with Iron Maiden, Motörhead, Accept, Van Halen ......

she straight crushed it.. blown away.. love it..
She is amazing.
Jess is amazing and seems like a legit cool person! Would love to learn from her!
first wow then go listento her bands and this little super soft pop dancy drummer hits this hard with that much energy is like WHAT!?
Yeah! Jess added her own spice to this song and straight up killed it. For a first attempt this was awesome.
she was amazing
Lights is a fantastic artist. Love her Jams. 3OH!3 was on the outskirts of my music taste but they have a couple of bops.
From northern Canada.
From Michigan Bro.....she's incredible and her beauty is her personality.

From Paraguay here!! She was a killer!! Good job!!
if i didnt know this song the way I do, you could convince me this is the original drum track that shes playing.
I’m a beginner drummer but I’m impressed. I still can’t believe she never heard the song before.
Well i hadn't heard it until i watched her yesterday, I am 59 and only ever heard one RATM song. I loved what she did.
She did great, she plays hard so her style works well with this song.
I’d never heard of her band, huge Rage fan. She definitely killed it!
Naples,Florida and been drumming for60 years from rock roll to country and anything else even jazz also
She plays like the kit owns her rent money.
Super fun video. Liked your comments Colby. Big Thumbs up all around.
BTW Brandon is a monster on the drums
She did great for a first take.
Nothing sexier than a female
Drummer. Especially one that looks like Jess. Amazing drummer. ❤ awesome
Job!
wow what a hard hitter..
She nailed it for real. enjoyed it from the very start..
Super clean. if I never heard the original . . I would still like it and felt that it fit well.. though the pause in the original always makes the difference..
Believing that she never heard it before it makes seeing her go on a first take awesome. I almost like it better than original.
Hi from Poland! I can't play drums, but i enjoy watching drum cams. I like this series from Drumeo, since Domino SaintAntonio played Slipknot!
She was awesome, as a person who just listened to the track first time and without drums... Crushed it! Best drum cover xD
This was fun to watch and just get to appreciate drumming so much more!
Watching from Lincolnshire UK. Loved the performance.
Hello from Bomb City, Texas! It was an amazing 1st. take performance !
Watching from Australia. Jess nailed it!
She did amazing especially considering she had never heard it before, it was her first attempt, AND she didn’t take any notes! If I were to grade her performance, I’d give her as high as 95%
Classic City GA listening to a great rendition of a good tune 👍👍👍
ONE TAKE W.O NOTES?!?!
😮😮😮😮
KUDOS!! That was solid, imagine what she could do with sit down time and actually taking notes #WOW
she turned into a little demon on the kit and I love it.
I love drummers that are super animated when they perform!
More energy than the OG, not in a way that RATM fans would think is better I think, but I liked it.
She seems like she really is just having a great time. And she killed it.
Nice video! Huge RAtM fan. Watching from Brazil
she definitely rocked it just listening once and beated without taking any notes.
She did it really great! Nice video and I'm watching it from Brazil.
She killed it and I love the original and now I wanna see her with the band
California boy here. Grew up on RATM. Awesome take by her! Rage transcended sound. Was is funk, rap, rock. ... YES! Crappy thing is thier messgae is still relevant. And yes I do believe her. My kids generation always asks... who is that?

I can’t believe she’s never heard this song before. This song is beyond awesome!!!!
I am a complete and willing simp for women rock climbers and drummers. when you were like “she hits hard” I was like “yeah look at her fuckn arms dude”
@colby fulton drums Chad Smith's was unbelievable.....he is a fucking god on the kit man. Canada here btw great vid!
Love the thumbnail brother....great "facial look of amazement".. she crushed it. WATCHING from Idaho Falls Idaho. Love Rage. Song pounds. Hard to believe she'd never heard it. The Bass line makes this song imo a little easier to work around.
Im not big on Summer set but she seems like a highly skilled and humble drummer.
Absolutely crushed it
I'd never heard of her before I saw that video. She did an amazing job.
Her: "I'm not the type of person that can just hear a song once and play it....LuLz"
*PROCEEDS TO HEAR THE SONG JUST ONCE AND PLAY THE BALLS OFFA' IT*
watching from Canada
The only RATM song I've heard is Killing In The Name, so I believe Jess when she says this is unfamiliar to her. I have zero coordination so me on a drum kit sounds like it's being pushed off a cliff, but I'm very impressed with her version of the song.
Very good 1st take with no knowledge, was a nice watch from New Zealand
I think she did an amazing job.. if this is real and it was one take then power to her.. she hit it outta the park
Toronto, Ont. Jess Bowen rocks the shit out of it!
Quite frankly, she CRUSHED It.
Watching from Pullman, WA, home of the Cougs!
Great tune she smashin it
She hits like Dave Grohl with same facial gestures. Incredible and her double snare fill suggestions are amazing.
I think she's very talented very good and looks like she's truly enjoying herself.
I love how she just knocks the ever-loving shit out of that hi-hat I love that shit
She did great! Hi from Sweden ;)
She killed IMO! Still can't believe anyone over the age of 21 hasn't heard this song. Better late than never to hear RATM!
59 and still have never heard it except for this.
She most definitely killed it
I saw 3OH!3 multiple times at warped tour in high school. Probably a lot of fun drumming for them.
She’s a beast. Hits hard! 🥁
2nd Album I bought ever, great Song, she did well. This Album motivated me to keep on druming
All I could think at the beginning of her take was: how much money does that cymbal owe her? I guarantee it never borrowed money again.
All I can say is .. she’s a really good drummer ..
Honestly, her take was awesome! She didn't get it exact, but damn she killed that.
I’m from Canada and some of the artists she plays for are Canadian, like Lights.
She did SO GOOD! :D
She's better than the original!
Love this song, and she was great.

I actually really liked how she filled in the parts that are just guitar. Original still best, but it's a cool difference.
Great reaction! I think she killed it!
Lights is amazing!
I just watched this video she killed it!
She did great.
I'm from Colorado ....she's awsome

North Carolina.Jess is very good and very confident.
