The Sinn 903 is not technically a homage. When Breitling went into administration in the '70s, Sinn went in and bought the rights to the Navitimer, making them one of only three companies allowed to make slide rule bezel chronographs in the 'Navitimer' format (the other two being O&W and, of course, Breitling).
Sinn gave it the 903 model designation, but (after a few legal battles with the revived Breitling) were not allowed to use the Navitimer name. Sinn actually developed the navigation chronograph, improving it, hence it has improved water resistance over the Breitling equivalent.

is it a homage if it is (technically) a navitimer tho?

@@kevinmoriarty7401 no, sinn and breitling are on the same playing field on this one, they all have the same rights to the design. It's the navitimer and 903 names that make the difference.
Edit: technically if the 903 is a homage, then the navitimer is.

I'm Sinn fanboy. Own 556ib, 356 flieger, 104 in blue, and the 144. When I first got into watches, Sinn seemed like the perfect company for my lifestyle and represented a tremendous value for their products. They use top level movements in all of their watches and they are regulated. A Sinn rep also told me via email after servicing my 356 that they regulate all of their movements slightly on the faster end of COSC. This is because they say that the movements tend to slow down and lose time over the years between services. This has been true in my experience. All of my Sinn pieces run around +4 to +6. They are finished very well and the company actually does have great customer service when it's time to get your watch serviced. If you're just getting into watches or a seasoned collector the 556 or the 104 are great introductory pieces for the brand. But I think getting a watch with all the cool technologies that they offer is the coolest part of the brand. Dehumidification capsules in the case, oil filled cases, Diapal escapements, low pressure resistance in case you need to eject out of a fighter jet 🤪, UTC complications for traveling, tegemented cases and bracelets, tide timers, magnetic field protections, and extreme temperature resistances for operating in extremely cold or hot environments. I mean no other company is doing things like that to the level Sinn is. They bought the rights to the navitimer from breitling and make it better than them in my opinion. The Sinn 140/142 has also been worm on I think at least 2 but maybe 3 space missions also. Sinn has made watches for Bell and Ross and have also worked with Damasko. The brand is pretty cool and they are durable affordable. The only thing I can knock the brand for is they use anti reflective coating on the top side of the crystal. I'm not fond of this but I'm pretty positive my Omega seamaster 300 has AR coating on the top side of the crystal also. The coating can be scratched and makes it look as if the crystal has scratches on it over time. And I also don't like Sinn divers a whole lot but that's just personal preference. I just don't like the hands and the dial layout. I'm sure they are made extremely well.

One of the brands you "stumble" on and wonder why have I not seen these before! The catalogue is immense, and they do what it says on the box, no pretensions, no overkill...just great pieces and moreover the majority are tool pieces designed for a specific niche, but appealling to people who enjoy that! And fantastic value is the icing on the cake, just great everyday wearers!

I’m now the proud owner of a few Sinn’s. So far I’ve acquired a EZM9, T1, T1B, U1 Professional and a 836. Their Tegimented steels, U boat, stainless steel or titanium, are just amazing in their ability to resist scratching. Using Top Grade movements is a big plus too. All of my Sinn’s run within COSC specs. Needless to say, I’m a huge Sinn fan 🍻

I've owned four Sinn watches (556A, 856, EZM 2, currently EZM 13) and I love the brand. When people ask me about it (which are only ever watch nerds) I tell them I think Sinn is what Rolex was in the 60's. A real tool watch with state of the art tech. The only issue I have is the inability to see them in-person in the US. I wish they had some sort of dealer network as I really don't like buying watches without trying them on.

    • @nickj9078
      @nickj9078 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Pete S I totally understand your wish to see them in-person and try them on at a dealer network, but from talking to the AD (Watchbuys; online only) for them in North America a year or two ago, trying to remember our conversation correctly from back then, I believe he told me with this business model of them being Sinn's agent (sorry if I don't have the legal technicalities spelled out correctly) in North America, they can sell them at a better price. In other countries (I think he mentioned Japan as an example), where they are actually sold through dealer networks, the price to buy a Sinn has a higher retail price. So while we don't have the advantage of seeing them in person and trying them on, we have the advantage of better pricing. Unfortunately there is a trade-off, but at the advantage of price.

Sinn's original business case was to sell the watches directly by mail order... . The only shop they had was a factory outlet in Frankfurt / Main. Today, there is a small number of shops in Germany, selling them, too. And- big advantage over these today widely overpriced "brands" is, every local watchmaker can service / fix them... .

The Sinn Navitimer (Sinn 903) has an interesting history. After the quarz crisis bankruptcy of Breitling, Sinn bought the rights of the Navitimer as well as the leftover cases and dials and kept producing them because the watch was widely popular amongst pilots. Sinn focused on further improving the Navitimer. Meanwhile A Company called Sicura owned the Breitling Name aswell as the Navitimer Name, later resurecting the Brand and the watch. Sinn still has the rights to the 806 Navitimer and all the later iterations that they made, which is why they still have that watch in their portfolio.

Great review of this brand. Worth noting that while most know Sinn for their utility watches, they also do fine dress/formal watches and a great line of women's watches (a generally weak area for many brands). One of the few brands that make true modern tool watches. Most watches labelled 'tool' are really dress/tool or casual/tool. My only criticism of Sinn is that they tend to function over form, but in their best watches the supreme functionality creates a handsome aesthetic.

Great vid 👍 *SINN FOR THE WINN! Everything you need in a watch, and nothing you don't.* Typed with a 104i St Sa A (grey/H-link) on wrist - edit: I guess I'm a member of the 104 cult 🤷🏼, and with plans on a 556i RS to keep it company soon. I could dump the rest of the collection and still be perfectly happy going forward with only 2 Sinns. Well, ok, keep the G-shock solar/atomic squares, the GW5000U-1JF and the 5610U with the Ti mod. Ok, and maybe add a white 104i or 105. And *definitely* an EZM. The "U" series is 🔥. And keep a couple mod builds. But srsly, could focus my collecting niche on GER tool watches and be very satisfied.
    5:45 - that grey 900! 🤤🤯🔥

There are also a lot of very interesting and useful technical complication unique to the Sinn-brand, like Tegiment (steelhardening), Ar-gass filling with moist-absorbing capsule in the watchcase, Oil-filled Hydro-cases for under water legibility at every posssible angle.

I’ve been through a few 556 and 104 models looking for that perfect under the radar tough daily wearer. Finally ended up with an EZM-3 and it just feels natural, and hardly anyone wears it. Eyeing the 856i as well...

Thanks for covering Sinn. These are the toughest watches made... I want the 356 with acrylic crystal. Great chromo for 2k.... you should cover the special features of these...tagmented steel, copper sulfate crystals, anti magnetic and inert gases used...

Love my Sinn 103 sa B E and Sinn 856 S UTC - bought those VAT free plus a healthy discount a couple of years ago. Both get a lot of wears despite also having the Speedy Sapphire Sandwich, IWC Pilots chrono and Tudor Pelagos LHD in my collection.

Sinn is terrific. I have the 104 LE with tan lume and the contrast is still fantastic. In part it’s the little things, like the white outline on the hands that make them pop, despite the softer tan. But they don’t quite seem to know how to take their identity and translate to a dress watch. The latest ones are hard to embrace.

The 756 is such an underrated watch. Without a running seconds hand, you have possibly the cleanest, most legible chronograph out there.

I have a Sinn type 144 Ti GMT for some 23 years now. Ti stands for titanium housing, that is (unfortunately!) not offered anymore, while GMT stands for the Valjoux 7752 with an additional hand, showing a 2nd time zone. It's the professional watch that I use for travelling overseas since I've got it, and I use it, too, when going to the work shop where there is dirt, steam and somtimes the need to put hands on something.
With the last service, I ordered to add a DIAPAL escapement working lubrication free and opted for the Ar-dehumifying technology, containing much tighter EDR seals, argon filling (inert gas) and a drying capsule to prevent / delay aging of the lubricant. Now, 5 years after the last service and occasionally working in an environment with a lot of steam, the watch still has an accuacy of + 1 ... 5 s/day, while in former times it had to get a service after that time. While other watchmakers write things like "Engineer" on their dial, this whatch is a true and sturdy engineer's companion.
@ ID Guy: To my understanding, it's these particular features like Diapal escapement, Ar dehumifying technology and so on that made Sinn become a quite outstanding chronograph supplier, not just because of that very clear high contrast design.
One more thing: I choose the 144 type because this was one of the rare examples with a tachymeter on it's dial, enabelig me to read the speed per hour from a time measurement (that's why I have a chronograph / stop- watch complication). I'm working in plant engineering, so I can easily check production volumes per hour or when driving a car, check true speed (rather than believing the inaccuracy of the speedometer). I really dislike the pulse scale (that covers all speeds above 190 units / hr) of my 144 type watch (not because of speeding) on one side and on the other side I just can't understand, why buyers of chronograph watches accept when there is not tachymeter scale there - what do they need that type of watch for if not for time measurement?

Great review of the brand. Next time of the watch shots please include the model numbers. Own a Sinn 856 b uhr feilger on bracelet. Great daily tuff as ever. Have order a U50 T on bracelet a model of a smaller version of the U1. Sinn listened to customers wanting a smaller U 1. And came out with one. What brand does that? Thanks for your shows and content. Stay healthy safe and warm.

My big Baselworld pickup last year was the gorgeous green metallic dial LE 104 which has become a favorite I wear when I’m feeling playful on a green leather rally strap; I’m thinking the murdered-out all black U50 on black bracelet is a fittingly dark companion commemorating Baselworld’s slide into oblivion. In the 70s mood rings were a thing and today I’m more of a mood watch guy.
