    This Omega came in different iterations. The 2054 and 2254 were the same watch, with the 2054 having the "Bond" bracelet and the 2254 having the 3-link "Speedy" bracelet. It also came in Electric Blue, as well, reference 2255.80. Both the black and blue iterations came in a quartz model, references 2264.50 and 2265.50, respectively. The watch was also made in titanium, reference 2231.50. Omega issued a limited edition of the watch with both applied indices and applied Omega logo for the America's Cup, reference 2533.50. These features were then carried over to reference 2230.50 which had removed the America's Cup text (often refereed to as the "Non-AC" dial) in favor if the classic Seamaster text. A white dialed GMT, reference 2538.20, and the 150th Anniversary Seamaster with a gray dial, reference 2232.30, are other iterations of this design.

    I wore the Omega 2254.50.00 Omega through my tours in Afghanistan. I have a picture of myself in Uruzgan Province, sterile desert BDUs and modified grooming standards (beard; our unit was authorized to grow them in Afghanistan), and my trusty Omega is visible on my wrist.

    This was my first nice watch that I bought back in 2002. I wore it everyday for 15 years until my collection started growing. I've done a ton of legitimate scuba diving with it (which was the reason I bought it). I've also worn it with a tux at black tie events. It is so versatile. I still wear it regularly but it will go to my son in a few years as it is his favorite in my collection. If Omega re releases it I'll be the first to buy one simply for nostalgia. Just don't mess it up Omega!

    Great watch, and because is so thin it wears better than a submariner. Omega needs to put their new watches on a diet.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They do need to spend more time on the case thickness. I think a lot of it is linked to the clear casebacks. I'd also love for them to taper the watch sizes down ever so slightly. Thank you for the comment, Lakes!

    • @user-wi9nn6dz8w
      @user-wi9nn6dz8w 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suspect they can't because the movements inside are so thick?

    • @tiempodesobrahn
      @tiempodesobrahn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      of course they can, change the movement. It's not like Seiko with those monster watches

    • @praetor47
      @praetor47 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ID-Guy i think it's because of the 3-level coaxial movements. iirc, the 2-levels were thinner but much much less reliable. hopefully they figure out how to make them thin like their inventor did

    • @gpearce11
      @gpearce11 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There’s a combination of factors. If we compare the thickness between solid and display version of the same omega, we see the display back adds about 1mm. That makes sense, but when we look at overall movement thickness, Omegas thicker 8500/8900 movement is still about 1mm thinner than Rolex’s Submariner movement, with the 8800 caliber being 1mm thinner again.
      With this math, an equivalent depth dive watch with an 8500 derived movement, like the SM300, should be the same thickness as the Submariner, but instead it’s almost exactly 2mm thicker, and one using the slimmer 8800, the Diver 300M is still 1mm thicker.
      Clearly the problem isn’t the movement, and it’s barely the display back (all things being equal, I’m willing to sacrifice 1mm for a good display back). Omega clearly needs to go back to the drawing board and see where this extra thickness is coming from, because while some of their pieces aren’t necessarily too thick, they’re clearly thicker than they need. Some definitely are too thick (the PO 600M is too thick across the board, and the 41mm AT really needs to be under 13mm).

    I own both the 2254 and the 165.024 (Civil version) and they are wonderful watches. Interestingly at the time when I bought my 2254 in 2002, I chose it over a Rolex Submariner as at the time the watch had a better bracelet, sleek profile and a date complication that was subtle, also at that time significantly cheaper ( around AUD$1000!).

    Thank you, IDGuy, for bringing up this watch. Put into the right historical perspective one can clearly appreciate the uniqueness of this watch. One modern iteration of this time piece would add so much more value to their portfolio than the n-th iteration of the Moonwatch ...

    What a great tribute to the 165.024 the 2254 is. If only Omega had left the quarter Arabic numerals on the 2254 that made the 165.024’s dial so gorgeous. I suppose there is still the Trilogy Seamaster 300 ‘57 for that look.
    The sword hands are so much more attractive than the modern skeletonised Seamaster hands and the 2254 pretty much looks like the modern day interpretation of a military issue watch.

    I remember the day like it was yesterday. North Vancouver, British Columbia, 1999. Looking at that watch in the display case thinking it was the most beautiful watch I'd ever seen. Oft forgotten fact: When that watch was introduced, the rest of the world got it on the speedy style bracelet whereas the US got it on the Bond bracelet. My son has it now and to this day still gets compliments on it 20 years after the fact. The 1120 movement is rugged and reliable and still keeps COSC time. Like the old Seiko 6139 it's indestructible. There was a lot of chatter on that watch back then on Rolex forums. "Should I get the Submariner or the 2254?" Moderators got so sick of the question they forbade it being asked further. IF any of you are old Timezone types you'll remember that. Still my favourite watch, ever. p.s. There's something wrong with the watch at the 7:45 mark. The 2254 did not and does not have a white date wheel ;)

    This is such a lovely reference. It has everything I miss in the modern Submariner - matte dial, painted indices, aluminum bezel insert - in a very handsome case with excellent proportions.
    One thing to note, the screw down helium valve provides positive assurance against leakage through the helium escape valve. Even with the crown open, the watch is still water resistant to a depth of 50m per design. If the time setting crown is left unscrewed, full water resistance is still maintained. Leaving either open doesn't flood the inside of the watch or otherwise expose the interior to water if the gaskets are in good order. Of course, it is good practice to leave both screwed down when they're not in actual use.

      Another factor is the Rolex vacuum caused by lack of availability of Rolex sports. Many brands are now either moving into the 5 to 10K sector, like Oris, or making redesigns , refreshes and limited editions in that range. It's going to be interesting the more people cannot get Rolex sports and are not stupid enough to pay fifty or one hundred percent aftermarket for Rolex.

    Super interesting! That 2254 is a great design and one I didn't know. So much more timeless than the Diver 300. My problem with current Omega Seamasters (Trilogy and 300 aside) is that they have too much candy.Too frantic. Too pop. Too Swatch. They should have at least one classic, refined, understated looking Diver 300 and Planet Ocean in the ranges, amid the hideous multi-coloured toot. Who buys these watches - genuinely, I've never seen one on someone's wrist? While Planet Ocean gets close, the current black model is still a bit of a mess of random orange accents and 9 fonts on the face and bezel.

    I wear this quite often, and it's my absolute favorite. Mine is quartz, which I PREFER, being slimmer and lighter and not requiring the attention a spring-loaded miniature gearbox does. I did exactly as you mentioned, by purchasing a later genuine Omega complete bezel & insert to have smaller bezel numbers and modernize the looks. (PERFECT suggestion, and already done on mine 🙂). I sold the bracelet it comes on (blasphemy!), and prefer it dive-style on a genuine caoutchouc rubber Panerai Submersible strap, which was notched with a razor blade to fit the smaller lug width. Simple to do. Looks totally OEM, and talk about comfortable! Built like a tank too!

    Great video mate. I like this version bc of the Broad Arrow hands, similar to my Planet Ocean 2201.50.00. Have looked at the titanium version of this one w/the blue dial...might be a runner. Keep up the great content. Cheers from the Nevada desert. 👍⌚

      Ah David, I wish I was in Nevada...I dream to one day land up in Arizona (maybe if you know anyone who'd be keen to sponsor me?) ;) the 2254 is such an interesting piece and its amazing that it helped set the groundwork for the PO lines. I'm going to continue the search the Omega catalogue and hope to pull out more gems in the future. And thank you for the comment! Cheers from the south coast of England!

    Great review! Since you're not a fan of the helium valve on this reference, you might want to look at the ref.2538.20 or Seamaster GMT aka Great White. It has the same case, 'gladiator' hands, bracelet and dial style without the helium valve but with a 24-Hr bezel

    The Rolex Mil-Sub was used by the SBS for a very short period, and was issued as all kit is as a sign out sign in, lose it pay for it....a lot got lost!! The Omega 2254 is a great watch, especially slung on a NATO strap...it then changes character into more of what it was supposed to as per design! Great and informative vid as always...would have liked to have seen a couple more examples though..perhaps more of the "Dirty Dozen"!

    I love all the 1120 SMP's and am lucky enough to own the Bond, EB 2255 and the 2254. I really don't understand why Omega haven't done a reboot of the 2254. They continue to stick with the Bond bracelet and skeleton hands. I think a black SMP with Mil dial and sword hands would sell like hotcakes.

    I am very fond of the Omega brand but I do not like any of their modern watches - this coming from a guy who prefers tool watches divers etc. On a side note, have you seen talking watches with Moki Martin? It is my favourite one, along with Goldberger (for very different reasons) - as a diver I found the stories fascinating. Anyway - I think I will eventually get a vintage Omega. If we look at what Tudor did with the Pelagos and the history of the Tudor Submariner that can be seen in the watch (revolution watch have some excellent articles on this), I would love to see something like a reissue from Omega - if they did a Pelagos equivalent, I do not think we would get away from the He valve and that is a killer for me (I find the modern bracelets ugly as well, though I would likely put it on a MN strap anyway).
    I am fortunate enough to live in London where the Omega vintage shop is in Burlington Arcade - I am sure the prices in there will be horrible but I do think there are reasonable prices to be had for an older Omega diver. Just got a Tissot Janeiro z199 though so my watch buying antics are on hold for a while.
    I love the sword hands on the watch you have shown here but that bezel insert kills me unfortunately. As Jack said in LOST, we have to go back.

    1st time not agree with you. This watch is an "in between" and far far from the nice bleue bond seamaster. It jumps To the eyes when you show them side by side. Even the numbers on the bezel are too big!

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a watch more geared for a certain type of person and it definitely doesn't get everything right. The bezel numerals bug me (check out "planet ocean insert 2254" on google) But it is a sick watch in the family, especially for that overly saturated SMP time period. Thank you for the comment, Eric! I hope to redesign this piece in the future

    Thanks for the history lesson. Kind of interesting how the Rolex looked nearly the same as the vintage Omega. I like the one without the wart on the left-hand side. In fact, I hate it. I also hate the skeleton hands. I like the sword hands and the ones without the wart on them. Not sure if I would have to go vintage as that helium escape valve has been there a long time, and I doubt 99% of the people who use this watch to do deep water diving will use it. I like how other dive watches have the valve flush with the watch and you really don't see it.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is a strange kettle of fish...And I hope to emphasise a lot of these points further in a video coming out soon about the SMP. But the history behind the watch is amazing...hell, those 165.024's were fire... If this channel gets enough clout one day I'll be getting a series of them remade... Thank you as always for the comment, Scott. I'm glad you enjoyed the clip!
